Landrum business owner shoots at assailants Police searching for two suspects

The owner of a downtown Landrum business was attacked during the early morning hours of Saturday, March 31, but she fought back, firing a gun at the

two suspects.

The owner of Cakes and Confections 4U in Landrum said she was exiting her store around 1 a.m. when she was attacked by two men.

She said the men attempted to sexually assault her before she pulled a gun out and fired at

them. The suspects ran away on foot as the owner ran to the police station nearby.

Landrum Police Chief Tim Edgens said the department called for the help of the Spartanburg County Dog Track(Continued on page 4)

Butt Pickers win children’s outhouse race The Butt Pickers kids team crosses the finish line in first place in the children’s division of the outhouse race during the Fool’s Day Festival on Saturday, March 31 in downtown Tr yon. Team members were Madi Siegfried, Samantha Metcalf, Shea Wheeler, Rayven Yoder and Caitlin Britton.

The streets were festooned with strings of neckties as a foolish decoration for the festival, which was first held in 2006. This year’s event also included games, music, food and other activities in the Tryon Depot plaza, as well as a TP (toilet paper) race, a dog food stroller race, a parade, a Trashion show, a music jam and a masquerade ball. Taylor arrested for arson in connection with Abril fire

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested David Charles Taylor, 78, of Columbus in connection with a fire that destroyed the home of Colleen Abril on March 20.

Taylor was arrested and charged with second-degree

arson on March 23, according to sheriff’s office reports. He was given a $100,000 bond and is currently being held at the N.C. Department of Corrections.

The fire occurred at 260 Amy Lane in Columbus while no one was home. When firefighters arrived, the house was fully en-

gulfed with no chance of saving it, according to the Columbus Fire Department.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation’s Fire and Arson Investigative unit.

Taylor’s next court date is April 11.

District One Schools recommended by AdvancED for accreditation The District One School Board received an exit report from the AdvancED Quality Assurance Team on March 28. The chairman of the team, Dr. Michael Lodico, addressed the board, district administrators and District One Schools staff and announced that his visiting team would recommend to AdvancED that District One continue to be accredited.

Lodico said, “Our committee knew you were a good school district, but after visiting here,

we now know that you are a great school district.”

District One Schools is accredited by AdvancED and must go through a rigorous review and self-assessment every five years in order to keep accreditation with the agency current. Lodico and the team of educators from three states spent four days in the district. During that time they interviewed more than 270 stakeholders, including parents, students, teachers, staff, administrators, board members and

The committee examined documentation provided by schools and the district to demonstrate that all schools and the district office meet or exceed the standards for quality school systems. The team will submit a full report to the AdvancED Board and to District One in about 30 days.

Some of the findings of the committee were that District One Schools provide: • Visible, responsive leadership that fosters trust and autonomy • Effective instruction resulting in high student achievement • Use of the response-to-intervention process throughout the district to promote the mission of providing “quality, studentcentered education.”

The committee recommended that District One analyze national and international instructional models to enhance rigor. It also recommended that District One work to provide students with opportunities for cultural awareness

so that they will be prepared for a global workforce.

Travis Sloan, chairman of the District One board, said, “It’s a proud moment as a school board member to sit in front of a group of professional educators from across our nation and hear that District One’s challenges need not be solely focused statewide but that we should expand our vision into a national and global arena. Dr. Lodico expressed it best when he stated that we not only ‘talked the talk but we walked the walk.’ I honestly believe that the only limits for District One are the ones that we put upon ourselves.”

Dr. Ron Garner, District One Schools superintendent, added, “We are so proud and appreciative of our entire District One Schools community and staff for this honor.

We are excited about the coming years as we work to meet the challenges ahead and continue to work with our students and teachers to ‘become the best.’”

Landrum Cardinals beat soccer district rivals, Chapman Panthers

For Landrum and Chapman it was a tale of two halves on Thursday, March 29.

Landrum hosted District 1 rival Chapman on the soccer pitch and walked away with a 1-0 victory.

Landrum (3-5, 0-2) outshot the Panthers 9-4 in the first half, but it didn’t take long for that first goal to hit the back of the net. Jon Perry sent a shot in from outside the goalie box just over a minute into the game.

“Whenever I got the ball, I just gave it a shot to the left and it paid off,” Perry said.

A big difference in the game, however, was Landrum’s physicality.

“The guys played together and they played physical,” said Landrum coach Josh Fowler.

Landrum forward Kaleb Gunther was constantly attacking the Panther goal. Panther goalie Eli Moore, Jr. had 12 saves in the game.

After the break, Landrum goalie Graham Mcllelan was a little busier.

Chapman Head Coach Will Maley had his Panthers attacking.

After registering just three saves in the first half, McLellan had to fend off seven balls in the second half. Chapman (1-4, 1-2) outshot Landrum 8-6 in the second half.

After the match, Maley gave the Cardinals all the credit in the victory.

“Every time we play them, they come with their ‘A’ game,” he said.

“Landrum has a lot of heart.”

As for Fowler, beating his district rival gave him some satisfaction.

“It’s nice to win those games,” he said.

prizes and lunch. This is a fourperson captain’s choice event, and you may make your own foursome or the pro shop can help form a team. Entry forms are available at the pro shop. TCC has been the home course for the Tryon High School and now Polk County High School golfers since the 1940s.

Each August, the golf team puts on a fundraiser event for the club.

James ‘Jim’ E. Greene

James “Jim” E. Greene, 81, of the Green Creek Community died Saturday, March 31, 2012 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Columbus.

He was a native of Polk County and the son of the late Edgar and Della Greene.

Jim was a retired welder and founding pastor of New Freedom Baptist Church in Green Creek, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, loved to fish, loved his grandchildren and was a friend and spiritual mentor to many people in the community.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Harris Greene; two daughters, Terry Greene of Atlanta, Ga. and Kim Greene of

Decatur, Ga.; two brothers, Bob Greene and Wayne Greene, both of Green Creek; three sisters, Beatrice “Peat” Randolph and Ruth Reid, both of Green Creek, and Inez Womack of Forest City, N.C.; three grandchildren, Connor Greene, Katie Farmer and Keegan Greene, all of Decatur, Ga., and a number of nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be on Tuesday, April 3 from 3:45 - 5:15 p.m. at the New Freedom Baptist Church in Green Creek. Funeral services will follow in the church at 5:30 p.m., with the Rev. Baud Marlor and Rev. Trent Watson officiating. Burial with honors by the Rutherford County Honor Guard will follow in the church cemetery.

Gary Page, a Landrum resident, will be the featured artist at the next Tryon Painters and Sculptors (TPS) show. An opening reception for his paintings will be held in the main TPS gallery on Saturday, April 7 from 5 – 7 p.m. The show will close on Saturday, May 5.

Page’s realistic paintings dealing with a variety of subject matter have built a large following. He will also have a painting in the Tryon Daily Bulletin’s reception area for the entire month of April.

Local Tryon artists Diana Gurri and Bob Neely will also show their artwork in TPS’s smaller gallery.
