Taylor arrested for arson in connection with Abril fire by Leah Justice

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested David Charles Taylor, 78, of Columbus in connection with a fire that destroyed the home of Colleen Abril on March 20. Taylor was arrested and charged with second-degree

arson on March 23, according to sheriff’s office reports. He was given a $100,000 bond and is currently being held at the N.C. Department of Corrections.

The fire occurred at 260 Amy Lane in Columbus while no one was home. When firefighters arrived, the house was fully en-

gulfed with no chance of saving it, according to the Columbus Fire Department. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation’s Fire and Arson Investigative unit. Taylor’s next court date is April 11.

District One Schools recommended by AdvancED for accreditation The District One School Board received an exit report from the AdvancED Quality Assurance Team on March 28. The chairman of the team, Dr. Michael Lodico, addressed the board, district administrators and District One Schools staff and announced that his visiting team would recommend to AdvancED that District One continue to be accredited. Lodico said, “Our committee knew you were a good school district, but after visiting here,

we now know that you are a great school district.” District One Schools is accredited by AdvancED and must go through a rigorous review and self-assessment every five years in order to keep accreditation with the agency current. Lodico and the team of educators from three states spent four days in the district. During that time they interviewed more than 270 stakeholders, including parents, students, teachers, staff, administrators, board members and

community members. The committee examined documentation provided by schools and the district to demonstrate that all schools and the district office meet or exceed the standards for quality school systems. The team will submit a full report to the AdvancED Board and to District One in about 30 days. Some of the findings of the committee were that District One Schools provide: • Visible, responsive leadership that fosters trust and autonomy • Effective instruction resulting in high student achievement • Use of the response-to-intervention process throughout the district to promote the mission of providing “quality, studentcentered education.” The committee recommended that District One analyze national and international instructional models to enhance rigor. It also recommended that District One work to provide students with opportunities for cultural awareness

so that they will be prepared for a global workforce. Travis Sloan, chairman of the District One board, said, “It’s a proud moment as a school board member to sit in front of a group of professional educators from across our nation and hear that District One’s challenges need not be solely focused statewide but that we should expand our vision into a national and global arena. Dr. Lodico expressed it best when he stated that we not only ‘talked the talk but we walked the walk.’ I honestly believe that the only limits for District One are the ones that we put upon ourselves.” Dr. Ron Garner, District One Schools superintendent, added, “We are so proud and appreciative of our entire District One Schools community and staff for this honor. We are excited about the coming years as we work to meet the challenges ahead and continue to work with our students and teachers to ‘become the best.’” – article submitted by Paula Brooks

Landrum Cardinals beat soccer district rivals, Chapman Panthers by Joey Millwood

For Landrum and Chapman it was a tale of two halves on Thursday, March 29. Landrum hosted District 1 rival Chapman on the soccer pitch and walked away with a 1-0 victory. Landrum (3-5, 0-2) outshot the Panthers 9-4 in the first half, but it didn’t take long for that first goal to hit the back of the net. Jon Perry sent a shot in from outside the goalie box just over a minute into the game. “Whenever I got the ball, I just gave it a shot to the left and it paid off,” Perry said. A big difference in the game, however, was Landrum’s physicality. “The guys played together and they played physical,” said Landrum coach Josh Fowler. Landrum forward Kaleb Gunther was constantly attacking the Panther goal. Panther goalie Eli Moore, Jr. had 12 saves in the game.

After the break, Landrum goalie Graham Mcllelan was a little busier. Chapman Head Coach Will Maley had his Panthers attacking. After registering just three saves in the first half, McLellan had to fend off seven balls in the second half. Chapman (1-4, 1-2) outshot Landrum 8-6 in the second half. After the match, Maley gave the Cardinals all the credit in the victory. “Every time we play them, they come with their ‘A’ game,” he said. “Landrum has a lot of heart.” As for Fowler, beating his district rival gave him some satisfaction. “It’s nice to win those games,” he said. Tryon Men’s Golf Association results for March 26 and upcoming events The Tryon Men’s Golf Association (TMGA) event for March 26 was a “mixed bag” format for each foursome: one low net ball on the par 5s, two net balls on the par 4s and three net balls on the par 3s. The results were as follows: First – Rody Dayvault, Tom Wilkes, Joe Puma and Ben Woodward (61) Second – John Albree, Chuck Huneycutt, Don Tyson and Richard Barraud (61)

Third – Bob Bolen, Jim Diggs, Cliff Joens and Norm Johnson (62) Fourth – Chris ter Kuile, John Hall, Dennis Sakos and Hal Turner (62) Closest to the hole – Hole no. 9, Chris ter Kuile Watch Masters at TCC It’s Augusta time, and TMGA members can watch the Golf Channel at Tryon Country Club and catch all the tournaments, including the upcoming Masters

Golf Tournament. The TMGA has agreed to purchase a flat screen for the wall in the pro shop and the club will have a large screen in the Donald Ross room as well. Play to raise money for PCHS golf team If you are not a steeplechaser, come join TMGA Saturday, April 21 at 9 a.m. for a day of golf that will raise money for the Polk County High School golf team. The entry fee includes golf, carts,

prizes and lunch. This is a fourperson captain’s choice event, and you may make your own foursome or the pro shop can help form a team. Entry forms are available at the pro shop. TCC has been the home course for the Tryon High School and now Polk County High School golfers since the 1940s. Each August, the golf team puts on a fundraiser event for the club. – article submitted by Marc Brady

When the dust settled on the inning, the Tigers had scored five runs, three of those were unearned. The Tigers added one more run in the sixth inning on a bases loaded walk. The Cardinals went into the bottom of the seventh inning down 6-1, but had no surrender in them. Fincher got things started with one out with a single. Caleb Bruce followed with a double to centerfield. Fincher scored on a groundout by Jon Humphries. Bruce scored on a throwing error by Byer to first base on a Thomas Rabatie ground ball. Gus Wofford drove in Rabatie on a two-out double. Kaleb Kuykendall reached base on a chopper to second base. With two outs and two runners on, Bishop hit a slow grounder to short stop and the catcher slid into first base, but couldn’t beat out Tavin Pratt’s throw. “That showed heart and character,” Landrum Coach Ray McCallister said.

For Landrum, it all came down to the agony of one inning on Thursday, March 29. The third was the difference for Landrum and a win over Blue Ridge. The Tigers scored five runs in the third inning en route to a 6-4 victory. For just a brief moment, the wheels came off for the Cardinals in the third inning. Tiger third baseman Zack Byer singled with one out to get the rally started. Alex Williams followed with a double. Byer scored on a wild pitch by T.J. Fincher and Williams scored on the throw from Landrum catcher Gavin Bishop back to Fincher to try and get Byer out. The ball got past Fincher and rolled towards the pitcher’s mound. John Mason Reynolds followed with a single, reached second on an error before coming home on a Ty Montgomery double. Kyle Foster drove in the final two runs of the inning with a single.

A visit to House of Flags, legislature reconvenes and voter ID The month of March passed by quickly with trips to Raleigh for interim committee meetings, then back to the mountains to work with constituents, local government officials and businesses. I listened and learned folks’ current concerns and needs related to our state government. House District 113 includes south Henderson, Polk and Transylvania Counties – I think the best house district in North Carolina. While visiting I did walk-abouts to meet local citizens. It’s gratifying to find many residents are informed on state issues and offer good ideas for solving state problems. House of Flags Museum – Columbus, N.C. Folks in Western North Carolina are not represented on this committee. I have offered to serve and will talk with Speaker Thom Tillis this week. In any case, you may count on me to attend the committee’s next meeting on April 19. And I will involve myself in the process if legislation is forthcoming in May. Voter ID Photo identification is a way of life in America as it is in much of the world. It is unfathomable to me that you can’t get into the governor’s mansion, get a tattoo, buy pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) or drive a vehicle without a photo ID. I could go on and on but the ironic thing is you can vote by only stating a name and an address. Tell (Continued on page 13)
