“Baby Blitzen,” Blitzen Benz Racing’s Mercedes Benz 190E. (photo submitted by Warren Board)

Blitzen Benz Racing places fourth at Virginia raceway Tryon’s endurance road racing team finished just out of the money in a field of more than 60 cars during a rain-hampered ChumpCar World Series contest at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) on Saturday, March 30. After several first-place finishes during the 2010 and 2011 seasons, Blitzen Benz Racing placed fourth at Road Atlanta in February and fifth at Sebring International Raceway in October, races that also had more than 60 entries. “Baby Blitzen” consistently finishes among the top five cars in the Eastern Division – the most competitive region in the nation. ChumpCar World Series sanctions sports car endurance road racing at the most prestigious courses in the U.S., Canada and Mexico for racecars designed and built on platforms originally valued at no more than $500. As the CCWS matures, entries are being attracted from the top professional and amateur ranks, including NASCAR, SCCA, NASA and GRAND-AM. Builders include Riley Racing Technologies, Stuart-Haas Racing, Junior Johnson Racing and others. For example, in the VIR race on March 30, NASCAR driver Bobby Labonte and his son drove a race car entered by the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department. The winning BMW team was sponsored by McDonald’s of North Carolina, with the purse donated to Ronald McDonald House. Blitzen Benz

Racing is seeking local sponsors to support its continuing competitive participation. “Baby Blitzen,” the only Mercedes Benz 190E in the series, consistently outperforms most of the predominant BMWs and Asian racecars, such as Nissan, Toyota and Honda, The Blitzen Benz Racing team said. Ned Gallaher of Gallaher’s Restorations built and prepares “Baby Blitzen.” In addition to Gallaher, on Saturday the race car was driven by Warren Board, Peter Mayrhofer and Jim Wright of Tryon and Mark Thomas of Waynesboro, Va. Crew chief Rusty Tredinnick of Mills River, N.C. provided strategic planning and race management and Greg Pressley of Hendersonville, N.C. provided race communication and mechanical support. Next on Blitzen Benz Racing’s schedule are a 14-hour endurance race at Daytona International Speedway on Memorial Day weekend and a 24-hour race at Virginia International Raceway on Aug. 11-12. If you would like to experience road racing from the driver’s perspective, go to youtube.com, enter “Baby Blitzen” in the search window and click on “Chump Car Baby Blitzen VIR2” for a short video clip of part of Peter Mayrhofer’s two-hour Saturday afternoon stint at VIR. – article submitted by Warren Board

Lichty to teach 10-day guitar-building workshop at TACS Tryon Arts and Crafts School will hold a 10-day guitar building workshop with local luthier Jay Lichty beginning on April 19 at 9 a.m. In this workshop, each student will build an all-solid African mahogany/Engelmann spruce dreadnought guitar. Building a guitar in 10 days is quite a challenge but very doable, said Lichty. “These will be 10 days of intense effort,” he said. “Be prepared to work hard while having the time of your life cumulating into potentially the best guitar you have ever played.” Lichty took a similar class under the guidance of Wayne Henderson that he said changed his life. Luthier Jay Lichty builds handmade acoustic guitars and ukuleles in Tryon. He was the winner of the 2010 Made in the South Award and has top performing artists playing his guitars from Australia to Japan to Nashville. He special-

izes in working with clients to build heirloom-quality custom instruments. Learn more at www. lichtyguitars.com Over the 10 days, students will learn the entire procedure of guitar building. Each day will offer students new information and experience as they work with Lichty. Because of the special nature of the workshop, space is limited to four students. More information about the workshop is available through Tryon Arts and Crafts School at 828-859-8323 or tryonartsandcrafts@windstream.net. Advance registration and a deposit is required to reserve your place in the workshop. Tryon Arts and Crafts is a nonprofit crafts school located at 373 Harmon Field Road in Tryon and exists to provide creative opportunities for everyone. - article submitted by Julia McIntyre

BBBS to make Have a Heart annual fundraising event Jim Cornell approached Karen Dacey, coordinator of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS), with a fundraising idea last fall. Cornell, an area potter, offered to make blank ceramic heart forms, along with Doug Dacey, for area artists to embellish. More than 40 artists created 70 works of “heArt.” Most were designed on and around the ceramic forms, but two area metal workers created their own heart designs for the fundraiser as well. The Upstairs Artspace hosted the silent auction project during its opening show of 2012. Following a large opening night turnout, a steady stream of guests visited the Upstairs throughout the run of the show to view the art exhibits and place bids on their favorite hearts. Karen Dacey said, “Sofia Dow kept calling from the Upstairs with exciting updates on the bidding progress, just as thrilled as we were with the public response to this event.”

Many showed up for the closing bids reception, with even a few bidding battles going on. Cornell said his one driving thought throughout the project was, “It’s for the kids - the children served through the BBBS mentor-

ing programs. BBBS officials said they were so pleased with the favorable results of the Have a Hearts fundraiser that they intend to make it an annual affair. Artists are already lining up to participate.

Ruth B. Johnson

Ruth B. Johnson, a resident of Tryon since 1962, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2012 at Tryon Estates in Columbus. Mrs. Johnson was 100 years old. Her 50 years spent i n Tr y o n and Columbus were filled with j o y, l o v e and happiness that she spread to all who knew and loved her. That sentiment is echoed by all who remember her now. Ruth and her husband, James Elliott (“Jim”) Johnson, retired to Tryon in 1962. They chose Tryon after spending many wonderful vacations at the home of her parents, Walter and Katherine Brent, who built a house on Warrior Drive in the 1940s. Further up Warrior Drive, they built a house in Brookwood Acres and lasting memories for both family and friends. Her sister, Jane Snowden Hodell, also lived and worked in Tryon for many years. Born Ruth Brent on Sept. 12, 1911 in Chicago, she moved with her parents to Maplewood, N.J., where she attended school. As a girl, she spent a year in Lausanne, Switzerland and never forgot the broadening experience travel provides. She graduated from Harriet Melissa Mills Kindergarten Training School in New York with a degree to teach kindergarten. She met Jim Johnson, from upstate New York, in the 1930s and the two hit it off immediately. A favorite family memory is their first date, to the movies, in which Jim forgot his money and she treated him. He then

sent her a letter with a dollar enclosed. They were married in 1933. Jim and Ruth lived in Summit, N.J. Jim worked in NYC for Western Electric Companies and AT & T. The couple adopted two twin boys in 1940, Donald and David, of whom she was enormously proud. “They were crazy about each other,” she once said. “We were homebodies,” Ruth said. “I always loved to read and cook.” Jim and Ruth were married for 50 years until his death in 1983. Ruth remained in their Brookwood Acres home until 1996 before moving to Tryon Estates. Over the years she provided a loving and nurturing home to her family and friends. All could not wait to visit Ruth and revel in her cooking and companionship. Later in life she shared her love for Europe with her granddaughters, touring France and England, an energetic companion. Ruth’s years at Tryon Estates were equally filled with wonderful memories for family and lots of new friends. Even after gallbladder surgery, a broken hip and a move from her apartment to Oak Bridge Terrace, she always said, “I’m doing all right.” A favorite line was “Old age isn’t for sissies.” She was predeceased by her sister, Jane Hodell, who also lived in Tryon Estates. Ruth is survived by two sons, Donald and his wife, Kristin, of Waldoboro, Maine and southern France, and David Johnson and his wife, Lynne, of Falmouth, Maine. There are four granddaughters and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were provided by McFarland Funeral Chapel of Tryon. A memorial service will be held at Tryon Estates on Saturday, April 7 at 2 p.m.

I thought my azaleas were completely dead. When we moved into our cabin almost 10 years ago the azaleas that border the driveway were a mass of blooms, and for the next several years we always looked forward their emergence. But then came the voles. About four years ago they invaded the roots of the azaleas and the poor shrubs began to suffer. I consulted master gardeners and bought a plethora of anti-vole products, but it has been like trying to hold back the tides. One by one our brilliant azaleas have become mere echoes of their former glory. A few days ago I stood by them and sighed. There were few leaves left from last

season and I could see only a few buds. I started planning to expand our parking spaces when the dead brush finally had to be removed. And then it rained – a slow, soaking rain that lasted for several hours. On Sunday, as I was about to go to church, I saw them. Hundreds and hundreds of new buds emerging out of nowhere. They were still tightly closed, but the promise is there. Soon, perhaps during Holy Week and Easter, there will be a breaking forth of new life and promise where I had seen only dread, despair and death. In a way those azaleas are a metaphor for Holy Week. Buying local, sometimes easier said than done Two weeks ago I was participating in a discussion of how to design invitations for an upcoming public meeting. The proposed invitation contained the line “Light refreshments will be served” and one member of our group suggested that we change that line to “Local refreshments will be served” since the refreshments will be provided by local vendors. Even though we do our best to buy locally whenever possible, there is no way that we can say that what we have is actually “local.” The hard wheat to make the bread at our local bakery comes from Montana; the green peppers and carrots purchased at Ward’s in the wintertime may come from Central America. The magazine that we bought with the groceries is probably made from trees cut down in Finland or Siberia. For the past 40 years our purchasing choices have expanded exponentially

thanks to a global economy, one what we now eat for supper in that we now say has robbed us January was not an option for our grandparents, who had no of many of our local choices. Those of us who are older choice but to shop, and eat, should be able to remember the locally. It is so much easier to say fresh vegetable options for our wintertime dinner table: kale, that we are going to shop locally cabbage, winter squash, ruta- than it is to actually do it. Because our textile mills even thought about the fact that are now in China; the cotton we

Allen and I are restoring a log cabin in Holbert Cove. The cabin was built around 1917, so we are trying to use materials that were available in 1917 here in Polk County, within a 10-mile reach of the cabin. So the replacement logs were cut nearby, and the roofing shingles were hand made from two oak trees cut on our land in Saluda. Floors are made from dying hemlocks. As hard as we have tried to get whatever we need for that house locally, it is impossible. The electrical and plumbing materials come from God knows where; same with the nails and roofing felt. District One AmeriCorps students, Inman Rotary partner to clean up roads AmeriCorps volunteers who attend Landrum and Chapman high schools recently helped the Inman Rotary Club pick up trash on Park Road and Blackstock Road in Inman, S.C. The student volunteers were assisted by Olena Atkins, site

shakes, and find just the right trees, saw and haul them, then split each 2-foot plug by hand. It would have been a whole lot easier to get them from Lowes. We have a choice each time we buy something, and it is not always an easy choice. Do we support the local grocery store

that sells fresh produce from Mexico, or do we eat only local produce such as potatoes and kale all winter long? More importantly, do we talk “local” or do we “do local?” Doing is much harder than talking, and it is much more complicated than the T-shirt suggested. The

Big Change that the T-shirt was talking about must happen with each small decision that we make, and there is no clear path through a very complicated global process. We do the best we can. That’s all that is required of each and every one of us.

POIL-024548

After much begging from my many friends and fans, I am pleased to return to writing my column in the Tryon Daily Bulletin, my all-time favorite newspaper. As usual, I have much to say, so thank you, TDB, for having me back. Congratulations are in order to Foothills Humane Society and the community of Polk County. Maddie’s Fund’s NoKill Communities blog is raving about us. The blog begins, “We’ve all heard the claims that no-kill cannot work in the south, and especially not in the rural areas of the south. Polk County, N.C. disproves that completely.” They go on to talk about how terrific our shelter is and the outstanding Live Release Rate we have achieved. This is something our entire community should celebrate and be proud of. Please make sure to show your appreciation to past and present board members, volunteers, staff and animal control for their above and beyond commitment to saving the lives of so many animals.
