Invasive plant project at FENCE In support of National Volunteer Week, April 16 – 20, FENCE, in partnership with AmeriCorps Project Conserve, will host an invasive species removal project on Wednesday, April 18 at 9 a.m. The project will focus on removing invasive plant species along the Wildwood Trail at FENCE. “Invasive plants destroy countless acres of native habitat,” FENCE organizers said. “They often decrease or eliminate the biodiversity that exist within these ecosystems. Removing invasives helps to restore that biodiversity.”

Kudzu is not the only invasive plant to cause problems in the area, FENCE officials said. Oriental bittersweet (top left), Japanese honeysuckle (top right), English ivy (bottom left) and privet are some of the other plants volunteers will remove April 18 along FENCE’s Wildwood Trail. Local author, illustrator visit Sunny View Elementary Sunny View Elementary recently had a visit from newly published author Linda Martin and illustrator Alice Feagan. They presented their new book, “The Summer of the Rabbits.” Martin said the story is based on a true event, when their dog “adopted” newborn rabbits and the family cared for them until they were big enough to release back into the wild. Sunny View organizers said the students were fascinated by the fact that the story happened near where they live, at the author’s farm in Mill Spring. In addition, the students said they were surprised Feagan went to Polk County High School. Students asked many questions about both writing and illustrating and got lots of encouragement from Martin and Feagan. “Everyone has a story to tell,” said Martin. “Practice drawing everything!” said Feagan. – article submitted by Angela Hall

Sunny View Elementary children in pre-K - second grades had lots of questions for author Linda Martin and illustrator Alice Feagan (above). Feagan showed the Sunny View Elementary students examples of her cut-paper art (right). She also demonstrated how she drew a storyboard for the picture book and how a full-page spread went from a rough drawing to the finished product. (photos submitted by Angela Hall)

A TRIBUTE TO RICHARD A. FINK (My  stepdad,  who  will  be  laid  to  rest  in  Arlington  National  Cemetery  April  12.)

He  did  not  march  into  my  life;Íž One  day,  as  fate  would  have  it,   he  was  just  there,  with  my  Mother,  and  that  was  good. I  remember  they  were  both  smiling. They  smiled  for  a  very  long  time,  for  many  happy  years.  They  were  a  perfectly  wonder- ful,  fun-loving,  pair.  They  loved  to  laugh,  to  love,  and  just  to  be.  He  was  a  husband,  a  father  and  an  Opa. He  was  a  friend  to  many,  a  respected  leader.  He  was  a  gentleman,  he  was  a  good  man. He  was  a  soldier;Íž  a  man  of  service.  He  loved  this  country;Íž  he  bravely  fought  in  two  wars,  so  that  those  he  loved  would  be  safe  and  free. He  was  an  inspiration  and  an  advisor  (whether  you  liked  it  or  not).  He  told  wonderful  stories  and  he  loved  to  hear  stories. If  you  happened  to  stroll  down  Pine  Crest  Lane, he  would  rise  up  from  his  rosy  chair  and  graciously  welcome  you  in. I  don’t  think  he  ever  met  a  stranger  who  was  a  stranger  for  very  long.

her  red,  white,  and  blue

so  tall  and  so  proud.  â€œFreedom  is  not  freeâ€?  he  would  say. “My  generation  is  dying  fast,â€?  he  recently  told  me. “I  wonder  what  it  will  be  like  to  die?â€? “I  don’t  know,â€?  I  told  him,  â€œbut,  I  do  know  that  there  is  something  waiting  for  you;Íž  and  it  will  be  beautiful.â€?  (because  that  is  what  he  was).  He  was  an  honorable  man  of  men: Forever  a  soldier,  a  patriot,  a  warrior;Íž

and  a  valid  presence. Even  as  he  slowed  and  his  senses  paled, and  those  shadows  formed  across  his  eyes‌  Still,  he  stood  up  for,  defended  and  protected what  he  thought  was  just  and  right.  He  loved  his  family;Íž  He  never  forgot  to  tell  me  that.  Ever.  We  can  live  greater,  better,  lives, because  he  lived. Â

among  stone  pillars  of  white;Íž  this  is  where  he  wanted  to  be;Íž  Among  â€œhis  guys,â€?  his  men. He  shall  be  at  one  with  them;Íž  He  can  rest  in  peace.  His  march  is  over.  His  boots  served  him  well.  His  life  was  good;Íž  rather  re- markable.  The  stories,  the  lessons  that  he  passionately  shared  will  live  on.  Thank  you.  Thank  you.  Thank  you  for  all  of  them;Íž Thank  you  for  your  generosity  of  self,  your  commitment  and  your  deep-seated  American  spirit.  Thank  you  for  your  love  and  tender  devotion  to  my  mother,  to  your  granddaughter,  and  to  us  all.  For  believing  in  me,  and  for  the  you  that  I  knew--   It  has  been  my  profound  honor.  In  remembrance,  Vana  Hazle  Bolling

Are you ready for the many changes about to occur in Medicare as a result of Obamacare? How about the $500-Billion cut in Medicare funding, the mandatory requirement that everyone buy health insurance or face a fine, and perhaps a lesser known aspect of the plan, the creation of IPAB, the Independent Payment Advisory Board? What’s IPAB you ask? The short answer is, it’s a proposal under Obamacare for a newly created panel to control and contain Medicare spending. That sounds like a wonderful concept, especially in light of the fact that Medicare will be broke in about two-decades and already owes more than $50-trillion in unfunded liabilities – that’s money that has been spent by the federal government on future programs, and the Feds have no money budgeted to pay the bills when they come due.

ings” come from under IPAB? Under Obamacare, between the years 2013 and 2020, the law as written directs IPAB to achieve is savings goals through payment reductions primarily in the Part D prescription drug plan, Medicare Advantage plans and cuts to skilled nursing facility services. That means the government is going to deny you some of your needed medicines, modify some of the services and cut benefits you can receive under your Medicare Advantage plan if you have one, or heaven forbid, if you’re in or going to a nursing facility. And because IPAB is required to reduce overall spending AND achieve those cost savings through a limited number of Medicare’s program segments, the cuts to those areas listed above will have to be very deep. That ultimately means that health care access will be impacted. IPAB is part of President (Continued on page 13)
