Elwell, Regoni win Lanier poetry contest by Barbara Tilly
Teens interested in playing Yu-Gi-Oh! have an opportunity to learn more at the Landrum Library Thursday, April 19 from 4-5 p.m. All teens between the ages of 12-18 are invited to learn how to play the popular game. After instruction, participants will be able to play in a tournament (cards will be provided) with prizes for the winners.

In an event that was as much a poetry reading as an awards ceremony, the winners of the fourth annual Sidney Lanier Poetry Competition were presented at the Lanier Library in Tryon on
Saturday, April 14. Each winning poem was read aloud, either by the poet or by Frances Flynn, who organized the competition. Lynn P. Elwell of Durham, N.C. took the top prize in the adult division with his poem “Mr.
and Mrs. Gregg.” In second place in the adult division was “Tupperware,” by Darlene Cah of Columbus, and Gina Malone of Tryon came in (Continued on page 4)

Saluda fire asks for one-cent fire tax increase by Samantha Hurst
Saluda Fire Chief Shane Bradley approached the Saluda Board of Commissioners Monday, April 9 requesting the board consider a one-cent fire tax increase. “Just keeping up with the times – the expense is skyrocketing,” Bradley said of running the department.
“I know the burden on the taxpayers is awful. We’re not trying to get a Tbone steak, but there’s only so much we can do.” Bradley said the department could use the funds to cover the constantly rising costs of equipment and expenses related to required training. Saluda commission members
