Saluda fire asks for one-cent fire tax increase by Samantha Hurst

Saluda Fire Chief Shane Bradley approached the Saluda Board of Commissioners Monday, April 9 requesting the board consider a one-cent fire tax increase. “Just keeping up with the times – the expense is skyrocketing,” Bradley said of running the department.

“I know the burden on the taxpayers is awful. We’re not trying to get a Tbone steak, but there’s only so much we can do.” Bradley said the department could use the funds to cover the constantly rising costs of equipment and expenses related to required training. Saluda commission members

asked to see the fire department’s budget and its contracts with Polk and Henderson counties before making any recommendations. Saluda last increased its fire tax from 6 to 8 cents in 2002. In budget year 2010, the reevaluation of prop(Continued on page 6)

The mission of this organization is to preserve and promote Saluda’s natural assets, heritage and culture. After 17 years, the group decided it was time to create a brand for the organization. Reflecting the organization’s mission, the logo’s background image is the town’s historic business district, while the railroad tracks curving around the SBA acronym mark the beginning of Saluda’s commerce with the coming of the first passenger train in 1878. With the new membership year that starts July 1, 2012, members of the SBA will be given a decal of this logo to put

Authorities seek information related to Ramsey homicide 

Spartanburg County authorities are seeking input from anyone who might have seen Fred Wayne Ramsey of Inman, S.C. on Thursday, April 12, the last day they believe Ramsey was seen alive. Ramsey’s body was found by a jogger around 4 p.m. Friday, April 13 about 55 feet off Old Asheville Highway in Campobello, according to a press release from the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities confirmed Monday morning that Ramsey was shot, which resulted in his death. They said investigators continue to work to determine whether he was murdered at the location his body was found or was killed somewhere else. Investigators said they would

erty values dropped the Saluda fire tax to 5.5 cents because the Henderson County tax dropped from 8 cents to 6.5 cents. The Saluda tax rate contract currently calls for the town’s rate to be one cent lower than the county’s rate. For budget year 2012 it increased from 6.5 to 7.5 in Henderson County, but remained 5.5 in Polk. The department worked with a total budget of $309,000 this year, with about $52,000 coming from Saluda’s 5.5 percent tax rate and the rest from Polk and Henderson counties. Currently, three full-time 24hour shift firefighters run the department with the help of approximately 35 volunteers. The department, Bradley said, also maintains a dive team and a swift water rescue team, as well as high-angle certification for steep rescues near areas such as Big Bradley Falls. Deputy Fire Chief Zach Pace said while everything seems to cost more these days, especially fuel for the trucks, the end of a salary grant will also hit hard next budget year. Pace said a FEMA grant the de-

The SAFER (Staffing For Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) grant paid 90 percent of two full-time employees’ salaries in its first year. The grant lasted for five years but decreased each year. In 2013, the department will receive no funding from the grant. “We can’t lose these positions and we won’t, but it would be nice to have the increase because the department will now be covering the full cost of two full-time positions,” he said. It’s critical the department keeps up with staffing and equipment, Pace said, in order to maintain the department’s new rating. In May 2011 the department went through a N.C. Department of Insurance ratings test. While official results have not returned, Saluda did verbally hear from the department that it was able to improve its ISO rating from 7 to 5. “We’re trying our best and we’ve worked real hard for the last few years to try and lower our insurance rating, which we’re hoping will save taxpayers money on their homeowner’s insurance,” Bradley said. “I’m hoping the citizens will stand behind us on this – they always have in the past.”

McCallister: One bad inning keeps beating Cardinals Landrum loses to St. Joseph’s 7-4 by Joey Millwood

If Landrum could ever put an entire game together, watch out, head coach Ray McCallister said Friday, April 13. The Cardinals have been in position to win ball games, but one bad inning has done them in several times. That happened again on Friday night in a 7-4 loss to St. Joseph’s. Landrum hosted the Region II-1A leader and dominated all, but one inning of the game. “If we could control that, we’d be sitting good,” McCallister said. The Cardinals jumped out early, scoring a run in the second and third innings. Gus Wofford led off the second inning with a double and then scored on a double by Trevor Walker. In the third inning, Caleb Bruce reached second base on an error, stole third base and then scored on a wild pitch. For four innings, Cardinal pitcher Ty Pittman kept the Knight’s bats off balance. In the fifth inning, however, the St. Joseph’s offense came alive. Angelo Pahila started the inning with a walk. That was followed by a David Estes single and a Ryan Stamler bunt single. Landrum will host Greer Middle College in a double header on Tuesday and then will travel to Blacksburg on Thursday. Landrum’s focus will be just on Landrum, McCallister said. The Cardinals won’t worry about what the other teams are doing until the dust settles. The Cardinals are currently 7-4 in region play. “We got to go take care of our own business,” McCallister said. “That’s all we can do.”

‘Knock Knock’ blog - The Night of the Spider Editor’s note: Elvin Clark, one of the actors in Tryon Little Theater’s production of “Knock, Knock,” has been writing a blog about the experience. The Bulletin has recently published some of his posts to give insight into the process of creating a community theater production. “Knock, Knock” runs April 1922 and April 26-29 at the Tryon Little Theater’s Workshop. I was in the bathroom when the shrieks rang out. The sound was a mixture of hysterical fear and laughter so at first it was hard to determine what was going on. By the time I exited the bathroom and entered the lobby, Nancy Winker and Monica Jones had the doors to the theater open and were… well… shrieking is the only word for it… for anyone who was not afraid of spiders to come and

kill this massive spider. Monica is doing publicity for us and she was interviewing Nancy for a story when a spider dropped down on the piano they were standing next to. Now, the size and athletic prowess of said spider is in some debate but for these purposes we’re giving the ladies the benefit of the doubt. As first responder, they showed me where the creature was but not having had my glasses on I can’t give an accurate description. When I moved the piece of paper that Godzilla was partially hiding under, he reacted very quickly and jumped to the floor. Then, in truly heroic fashion, I “dispatched the beast with a single blow.” (I think that’s from Camelot but don’t quote me.) Nancy and Monica calmed down and, like the profession-

als they are, they completed the interview. Rehearsal continued, the spider was dead and I had material for my blog. It was a win-win – although the spider may feel differently. The bonus for me was that I now have an undying mental picture of these two consummately brilliant, talented, sophisticated ladies jumping up and down screaming like a couple of sixth-grade girls that will live for me every time I see either one of them for the rest of my life. Ah, the memories to be gained through theater. And in the end, what else do we really have? Nancy is an incredible trouper and has my complete respect. Monday was her first rehearsal back after a week in Italy so basically her body clock was still on Italian time. I know that

to reset that clock for me takes the better part of a week so I was ready and willing to give her every benefit of the doubt so that she would have time to become acclimated. We did Act One twice and she was dead on. Even with all the set and set decoration changes that she had never seen before. It was like she hadn’t missed a day. Well done, JArc, well done. Rehearsal went very well all the way around. Pace and energy were good. Frances was happy. We do have some technical issues to work out both with people and equipment. They will be worked out. This is going to be a very good show. Have I mentioned that the box office is now open?

Optimistic farmers not hard to find in Polk County Hence, the first prong of my process began: revealing how to eat and live locally, from farm to fork to fabulous! The second prong in this investigative work came through my continued work in and for local agriculture. Since 2006, when I started my first farm business, I have met new people every day poised and excited for our food future to guide us back to our food past. This means slow meals and time with family, knowing who grew our food, preserving it and investing in our local community through subscribing to it. I’m excited to introduce to you this growing number of optimistic food raisers and producers in our Foothills over the coming months. (Continued on page 15)

You might think it would be difficult to find a cheerful, growing population of optimistic farmers in America today, but I am doing so in and around Polk County at a delicious pace. Using my sustainable threepronged investigative process, I am peeling and chopping my way past “outsiders” mealtime trappings and living locally to be happier and healthier and to get to know my farmers and neighbors as my friends. Twice monthly, I will share my musings and report locavore-friendly discoveries with you, the reader, in this Tryon Daily Bulletin biweekly column, “In Good Taste.” We will learn about farms and their products, recipes, slow food events and fundraisers and how to get involved with all of the above.

Letter to the Editor

Do not risk judges making decision for us My first question would be how does the author (Leah Justice) of the April 6 article know that “Polk County mirrors state dissent on Amendment 1”? What statistics does Ms. Justice have to make such a statement? The article goes on to correctly state that 30 other states have passed similar amendments and that in every state where a marriage amendment has been placed on the ballot, voters have approved it. In California, not known as a bastion of conservative folks, the voters had to vote on just such an issue not once, but twice. First four judges in San Francisco overturned the people’s vote; hence the need for a Constitutional amendment. Then in November of 2008 in a state election the voters of California voted again and the amendment to so-
