For example, at some universities, the foundation supports a camp for children with a parent who has cancer. “If you look at the navigation services at www.livestrong.org, you’ll see how many services are available,” Cash said. Cash, a competitive cyclist, has been involved in raising funds for the foundation since he rode with Lance Armstrong in May 2006. for the fight against cancer. Asked several years ago what the Armstrong’s Livestrong foundation means to him, Cash said, “Livestrong means using your gifts and energy to make a difference in someone’s life or situation.” Cash invites anyone to join the climb for one trip or all 10, which will be a total of 84 miles. Franklin McKaig of the Tryon Youth Center is donating the use of the center, as well as making his popular pizza for sale during and after the ride. All donations are tax deductible. Cash’s Climb to Conquer Cancer raised approximately $5,200 last year. “If you or anyone you know has been affected by this dreaded disease, please consider contributing to this cause,” Cash said. Converse College summer workshops Applications for Converse College’s coeducational summer workshops, open to rising 10th – 12th-grade students, are due April 30. The Young Writer’s Workshop and CSI: Converse are residential programs that will be held June 17 – 22 on the Converse campus. In Spartanburg, S.C. The Young Writers Workshop offers students the opportunity to develop talents in poetry, fiction, playwriting and creative nonfiction. Participants receive personal instruction and critique from professional writers in several genres of writing: poetry, fiction, playwriting and creative nonfiction. They learn techniques that help writers recognize strengths, potential and

avenues for successful writing, editing and publishing. CSI: Converse participants explore the world of forensic science by securing a crime scene, gathering clues and processing evidence in science labs. They learn about blood typing and DNA fingerprinting and investigate a crime scene by studying fingerprints, shoeprints, hairs, fibers and powders. The workshop includes presentations by forensics experts and a tour of the Spartanburg Crime Lab. More details and registration information is available at www.converse.edu/summerworkshops. – article submitted by Beth Lancaster
