District One recognizes National School Nurse Day Thursday, May 9 has been designated as National School Nurse Day for 2012. District One officials said school nurses work ever y day to improve the health and success of the students in District One, who face more challenging issues today than ever before. This year’s theme, “Advocacy, Access, Achievement: Making the Connection,” is reflective of the overall positive impact school nurses have on the health and well-being of students. “Healthy children learn better is a simple truth,” District One officials said, “and school nurses help to remove barriers to academic success. They reduce absenteeism, provide better attendance rates and care for students in school.” (photo submitted by Paula Brooks)

Columbus police observe Motorcycle Awareness Month The Columbus Police Department recently announced two members have successfully completed Bike Safe North Carolina assessor training, just in time for Motorcycle Awareness Month, which is observed in May. Chief Chris Beddingfield and Officer Chris Ruff have completed training that will allow them to teach Bike Safe North Carolina classes. Bike Safe-NC invites motorcyclists to participate in Rider Skills Days that offer assessment on present driving skills and advice to help make their experience as a motorcyclist safer and more enjoyable. As well as professional riding techniques, topics covered include the system of motorcycle control, collision

causation factors and security. The Rider Skills Days are run during the week and on weekends, taught by experienced, trained police motorcyclists passing on their knowledge and experience in a friendly and informal manner. Held at various locations around the state, the pre-booked days include both classroom-based advice and on-road ride-outs. Beddingfield said Columbus police hope to have Bike Safe classes scheduled in the Columbus area soon. The sheriff’s office said approximately $500 of charges were made at several locations. Abril was released on Saturday after posting a $32,000 bond. Abril was elected Polk County sheriff in 2006 and served until his resignation in November 2008, the day before he pled guilty to two counts of felony solicitation to take indecent liberties with a minor. The solicitation case stemmed from incidents that occurred in the late 1980s involving two Polk County girls who were ages 10 and 11 at the time. Abril served a suspended sentence that included 120 days of house arrest and three years of supervised probation. Abril was also made to surrender his law enforcement certification.

Chris Abril

While on probation in 2009, Abril was arrested and later pled guilty to driving while impaired (DWI). He was sentenced to unsupervised probation and community service on that charge. Because he violated his 2008 probation by being convicted of a DWI, Abril was also placed on 30 days of house arrest for the probation violation. Abril is not currently on probation for his previous convictions.

Cardinals win eighth Upper State title, head to state by Joey Millwood

The Landrum track team has won the Upper State finals eight consecutive times. On Saturday afternoon, May 5, Landrum hoisted another Upper State trophy and will head to Columbia to defend their title. The Cardinals scored 121 points to beat out North Central’s 90 points. Ninety Six finished third with 69 points and Christ Church finished fourth with 42. Blacksburg finished 13th with 20 points. The Cardinals are the defending state champions, but the path to the state finals this year was a little different than last year. “We have a different makeup of our team this year,” Landrum Head Coach Russell Mahaffey said. “The picture of our team has totally changed.” Last year the sprinters were the strength of the team. Last year, the Cardinals qualified just four athletes in the field events. This year they qualified 10. Two of those qualifiers are in the triple jump and they had a highly contested jump on Saturday. Senior Cole McDowell, who was state champion in the triple jump last season, won the Upper

State title again, but this time got some stiff competition from Cardinal sophomore Aaron Bryant. McDowell jumped a distance of 43-7 and Bryant jumped 43-4. “I kind of scared him today,” Bryant joked after the event. “Just the preparation this last week to prepare my body to jump (was the difference).” Bryant also finished second in the long jump with a jump of 20-5. Other Cardinals that qualified were Sam Robins in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.3); Kaleb Dill in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.6); Troy Hodge in the 3200-meter (11:56); Derek Brittain in the shot (45’8.5”); Chasten Thomas in the shot (43-1) and discus (127-2); McDowell in the high jump (510); Hunter Conley in the high jump (6-2); Will Brown in the 800-meter (2:12); Danny Bruce in the 800-meter (2:13); the 4x800 team of Bruce, Hodge, Brown and Kevin Human (8:43); Paul Miller in the 110-meter hurdles (17.4); the 4x100 team of Peyton McCarter, Bryant, JoJo Wilkins and McDowell (46.4); Luke Phillips in the pole vault (11); and McCarter in the pole vault (11) and 200-meter dash (23.5). Christian followed up a Region II-1A crown with an Upper State championship with 87 points. The Lady Cardinals finished fourth with 58 points. Blacksburg finished 11th with 28 points. For Landrum, Daisha Whitmire qualified in the discus (88-10); Carla Bruce in the 400-meter

hurdles (1:21.2); Holly Rickett in the shot (29-7.5); Bruce in the high jump (6’2”); Kim Brown in the high jump (4-8); the 4x800 relay team of Paige Herbst, Samantha Waters, Sarah Cash and Cierra Belue (11:13); Shelby Morris in the pole vault (8-6); and Alison Jouan in the pole vault (7).

What are advance directives and why do I need them? Perhaps you’ve heard the term advance directives, but don’t know for certain what that term means or fully understand why it’s important that virtually everyone, but particularly boomers and seniors, have advance directives. Simply put, your advance directive is a document that will ensure your wishes are being followed. An advance directive allows you to designate someone to speak for you and to make choices for you in several areas of your life, if for some reason – illness, accident or mental incapacity – you are no longer able to make those choices yourself. Decisions involving health care – living wills that specify your wishes for heroic efforts to keep you alive such as surgery and life support – financial management of your affairs while you’re incapacitated, and a general power of attorney are examples of types of advance directives. These allow your designee to speak on your

behalf in situations where you are may be one person for everything, or perhaps one person for your not capable of doing so. The most important aspect of financial decisions and another for an advance directive or power of health care decisions, and it does attorney, regardless of the type – not have to be a spouse or even a living will, health or financial – is family member. Keep in mind, that you’ve got to Senior no advance direchave this document in place and LifeStyles tive takes effect unless or until have designated Ron Kauffman you are no longer this person before able to make or whatever the problem may be actually happens. By communicate such decisions for creating your advance directives, yourself. If your family or peryou have the opportunity to stipu- sonal circumstances change, your late ahead of time who speaks for documents can be revoked and you. This assures you that your rewritten. People of all ages can be afwishes will be precisely carried out fected – remember the case of Terry if you cannot speak for yourself. Deciding who to name as your Schiavo in Florida? But the odds power of attorney, financial or are that seniors are most likely to health care surrogate should not be affected due to accidents and illbe a surprise to family or close nesses like cancer, cardio-vascular friends. Those decisions should problems, dementia, Parkinson’s, be discussed and made clear as to stroke or just the aging process whom you wish to be responsible itself. Creating advance directives for all or any individual aspect of decision-making on your behalf. It does not necessarily require an

attorney. But it’s a very good idea to seek legal counsel to be sure that you are fully protecting yourself with complete, witnessed and notarized documents. It’s an inexpensive way to ensure that your wishes will be followed. One last bit of advice. An advance directive won’t do you much good if it’s locked away in a file cabinet or safe where no one can find it. Give copies to your physician(s), family, friends, clergy, and attorney. Ask your doctor to enter it in her records, and have a copy with you if you go to the hospital. Happy MotHer’s Day! color it !

Mother’s Day is a day that we honor our Mothers for all they do for us. The earliest Mother’s Day celebrations occurred in ancient times to honor the Mother goddesses. In Greece and Rome, the holiday was celebrated for the Mother of their gods. The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States was created because of the work of three women, Julia Ward Howe, Anna Reeves Jarvis and her daughter, Anna Jarvis. In 1870, Howe wrote the Mother’s Day Proclamation, a statement requesting that the Civil War be put to an end in the name of a Mother’s Day for Peace. Although Julia first conceived the idea for a Mother’s Day, it was never officially recognized. In the late 1850’s, Anna Jarvis promoted the idea of a Mother’s Day of Work to help improve sanitation conditions for American soldiers in military hospitals. President Woodrow Wilson declared the first official Mother’s Day in 1914. Many nations followed suit, and what we know today as Mother’s Day was born.

not belong in the sewer on your septic tank. While pouring hot water and detergent into the drain along with you grease may allow it to pass into your line, the grease will re-form into a solid lump as it cools, blocking either your homes sewer pipes or the main sewer system, or your septic tank. Fats, Oils, and Grease…Some information o Never pour fats, oils and grease down the sink or garbage disposal. o Before washing, scrape and dry wipe pots, pans, and dishes with a paper towel and dispose of them in the trash-mixing these with absorbent waste such as paper towels, kitty litter, coffee grounds or shredded newspaper will help prevent leakage from trash bags. Blockages in the main sewer line can lead to spills which are hazardous to our health and to the environment. Removal of grease blockages and the cleanup associated with sewage spills is very expensive and may result in liability and property damages. Blockages in your own sewer or septic tank can lead to wastewater backing up into your home or business, spilling out onto the streets and even finding its way into storm drains. The property owner will either need to perform do-it-yourself maintenance, or to hire a plumber to clear the blockage. Cleanup can be expensive for homeowners and even more so for businesses, which can also be subject to fines and closures. AND FINALLY…Before attempting to unblock clogged sewer lines, we request that you notify us in advance. Often, a grease ball is cleared from a property owner's pipe system only to move out into the street and cause a clog in the main sewer system. Such a clog can result in a sewage spill from a manhole.

First Baptist of Landrum helps at Hospice Thrift Barn

First Baptist Church of Landrum’s GA group, along with some parents and leaders, spent a recent Wednesday evening helping out at the Hospice Thrift Barn. They dusted shelves and furniture and straightened the clothes on the sales floor, among a miscellany of other tasks. And they also did a little shopping! Tracey Brannon, volunteer coordinator at the Thrift Barn, invites church and school groups to take advantage of this opportunity to serve their community. All proceeds from the Thrift Barn benefit Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills. For more information, call Brannon at 864-457-7348. (photo submitted by Marsha VanHecke)
