Polk polls open for N.C. primary today Polk early vote totals 12.37 percent by Leah Justice

Primary polling places are open today throughout the county for voters to choose which can-
didates will be on the ballot this November. Early voting ended Saturday, May 5, with 1,831 or 12.37 percent of Polk County’s registered voters casting early votes. Currently, there are 14,798 registered
voters in Polk County. Polling places will be open today from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Polk’s seven locations. Tryon voters will go to the Har(Continued on page 4)

Former sheriff Abril arrested Saturday by Leah Justice
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested former sheriff Chris Abril on Saturday, May 5 after a woman reported suspicious charges on her credit card. Abril, 50, of 76 Simms Street, Columbus, was charged
with felony obtaining property by false pretenses, felony possession of stolen goods, felony identity theft and felony unlawful obtaining a credit card, according to sheriff reports. Investigators said the victim reported that her credit card statement showed charg-
es she knew she hadn’t made because she was out of town at the time, according to the report. Officers said they obtained a video of Abril allegedly using the card at a Lowe’s. (Continued on page 6)
