Edward Jones named firm of year by Money Management Institute Market Place

Financial services firm Edward Jones was named the Advisory Solutions Firm of the Year by the Money Management Institute as the firm that most exemplified overall excellence and contributed to the long-term success and sustainability of the wealth management industry, according to Jay

Geddings, the Edward Jones financial advisor in Polk County. The award was presented at the Institute’s annual Gateway to Leadership Awards Dinner held recently in Chicago. The Money Manage-

ment Institute is the national association for the managed investment solutions and the wealth management industry. This award recognizes the features and benefits of both of the firm’s advisory platforms.

Patricia Gass said she feels for the planning board and the work ahead of them. She said she’s lived here almost 10 years and cannot count how many times she’s heard from people

that they don’t want another Chocolate Drop Mountain. Fred Baisden said he spent hours with the Henderson County Fire Marshal, who said no one has been killed in a landslide. Baisden said he was referring to a comment made by McDermott during a prior UDO meeting about issues such as people being killed in landslides, such as in Henderson County, is what Polk is trying to avoid. Baisden also said Polk officials have mentioned similar regulations in Jackson County,

and Jackson County is in the process of undoing regulations there because of the negative economic impact. Krolak said the planning board will take all public comments into consideration. The planning board’s subcommittee is scheduled to meet Thursday, June 7 at 5:30 p.m. The full planning board’s next regular meeting will be Thursday, June 14 at 5 p.m. Planning board meetings are held in the upstairs meeting room of the Womack building in Columbus.

Nelson to teach portrait painting workshop June 11-15 Grasping the fundamentals of portraiture

Richard Christian Nelson (Rich Nelson) will teach a fiveday portrait painting workshop in Tryon on June 11-15. The class will take place at the Nelson’s Skyuka Fine Art gallery from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. each day. Artists will work over the weekend to grasp the fundamentals of portraiture. This workshop is open to all media, but oil will be emphasized. The class size is limited to 12. The artists will concentrate on painting the portrait from live models. Nelson will offer lectures, demos and group “critiques” (mostly just putting the paintings along the wall and having each artist say “how it’s go-

ing”). Email rich@richnelson. com or call 828-859-0318 for more information. Nelson is an accomplished portrait and gallery artist who lives in Tryon. He earned his B.F.A. from the College of Creative Studies in Detroit, Mich. in 1988. Nelson taught anatomy, figure drawing and painting at CCS part-time after graduating. He has work ever since as a portrait artist, gallery artist and instructor. You can view his work and learn about this and other upcoming workshops at richardchristiannelson.com or read about his recent awards and notable commissions at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Christian_Nelson. – article submitted by Kim Nelson

‘Goin’ for B’roque’ at May meeting of Foothills Music Club May’s Foothills Music Club meeting on May 10 was hosted by Carole Bartol at her mountain-view home. President Jeanette Shackelford presided over a short business meeting before all went “broke for B’roque.” Baroque music was created during the years of 1600 through 1750. To begin the program, Mimi Child Traxler played all three movements of J.S. Bach’s “Sonata in G Minor, S. 1020.” The piece is meant for piano and flute; however, in this case, Traxler’s piano stood alone. A trio of alto recorder, soprano recorder and bassoon, played by Elaine Jenkins, Jeanette Comer and Karen Molnar respectively, entertained with Jean Baptiste Lully’s “Que la Gloire a Jamais le Couronne” from “Le Temple de la Paix” and “Quel Coeur Sauvage icy ne s’engage” from “Alceste.” The

trio also performed “Pipes Are Sweet on Summer’s Day,” from John Dryden’s demi-opera “King Arthur” by Henry Purcell, and “Bourree” from “The Water Music” by George Frederic Handel. Soprano Elaine Jenkins, accompanied by Mimi Child Traxler on piano, entertained with the humorous “Peruckenstuck” (S.4F) from “The Civilian Barber” by P.D.Q. Bach (Peter Schickele). Jenkins was not in need of a “hairpiece” to perform this any better. Chairperson of the day, Karen Molnar, who earlier mentioned that baroque music was a favorite of hers, proved it by ending the program performing four movements on her bassoon, from two different editions, of J. F. Fasch’s “Sonata in C-major” for bassoon and basso continuo. Carole Bartol accompanied on the piano. The Foothills Music Club

will resume meeting in October of this year. The club’s goals will continue to be nurturing its members in quality musicianship

and offering scholarships to the area’s talented young musicians. - article submitted by Ellen Harvey Zipf

Landrum’s Bryant signs to play ball at Francis Marion by Joey Millwood

Landrum center Alex Bryant will have to adjust his game some next season. The Cardinal signed to play basketball at Francis Marion on Wednesday and admitted he won’t be the big man on the team anymore. That’s not a bad thing. The senior will get to show his jump shot a little more often and another element of his game he didn’t get to showcase at the high school level. “It’ll be a transition for me because I’ll be handling the ball a little more,” Bryant said. The last time Bryant was on a basketball court, he wasn’t sure of his future. The Landrum center took part in the FCA All-star game and after the game talked about how he was going to play AAU and Sports do some other things in an effort to get a school’s attention so that he might continue his basketball career. He said he’s glad that he didn’t have to wait until the summer to Landrum’s Alex Bryant signed to play basketball at Francis Marion on Wednesday afternoon as his parents, figure out where his path would Bernard and Jennifer Bryant, and coaches looked on. Landrum Cardinal Youth Basketball Camp set for June 18-20 The Landrum Cardinal basketball team will host its annual Youth Basketball Camp June 18-20. Landrum Head Varsity Basketball Coach Lyn Smith will lead the camps. “Our philosophy is to instill confidence in young players by teaching basketball fundamentals, which in return will raise their individual level of play and

make the game more fun to play,” Smith said. Two separate camps will be held, one for first through fifth grade and one for sixth through eighth grades. The first through fifth graders will meet each day from 1:30-4 p.m., while the sixth through eighth graders will meet from 5-8 p.m. The first through fifth grade

boys and girls camp will focus on fundamentals such as ball handling, passing, shooting, rebounding and playing one on one. The older kids will participate in a positions camp in which they will receive personalized instruction on how to play at positions such as guard, wing and post. These position players will be exposed to high school level routines

and practices during the camp. Also assisting Coach Smith will be assistant head coach Tre’ Kirkland, JV coach Jake Inman and current LHS players. Each camper will receive a T-shirt for participation. For more info: call 864-4154487 or visit LCYB.NET. – article submitted by Lyn Smith

Stamp Out Hunger nets more than ton of food for Outreach A recent Saturday food collection by the U.S. Postal Service netted more than one ton of non-perishable food for the Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry (Outreach) food pantry. “After we sort and record the donations, this food will go directly to Polk County residents in need, said Carol Newton, executive director of Outreach. “Despite recent reports of the economic recovery, we are still seeing record numbers of individuals and families asking for our assistance. With the school year winding down, Newton said that Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry is working with the Outreach Committee of the Tryon Congregational Church to develop and launch a summer meal program. “During the school year, we supply more than 320 kids with a ‘back-pack’ of food for each weekend, said Newton, “This summer, the Congregational Church will provide ingredients for an easy-to-prepare meal for the entire family once each week. The meals may be picked up at Outreach or church and community volunteers will deliver

the meals to the home of each participating family. “Our group began to wonder what happens to these hungry children over summer break, said Priscilla Yeager, chair of the UCC outreach committee. “When we discovered there was no program in place, we decided to partner with Outreach to design one. We are excited by the opportunity to provide such a necessary service to our community. Newton said that donations of non-perishable food are welcome year-round. “We’re so grateful to see once again how generous this community is, Newton said, “Even in hard times, the community shows its compassion and willingness to come to the aid of those less fortunate. Product donations or “giftsin-kind allow Outreach to save much-needed funds to support other areas of the ministry. Monetary gifts are accepted in person at the Outreach office, by mail or through the organization’s website, www.tboutreach.org. - article submitted by Wendy Thomas
