sewer fund totaling $618,245. The total budget as of now equals $1,574,140. Saluda Finance Officer Ron Cole said the biggest changes this year come through the water and sewer department. “July 1 there will be the new contract with the fire department and in doing research for that new contract we discovered that we must charge our nonprofits’ water bills,” Cole said. “We have found we cannot treat them any differently than other customers.” Cole said in the past nonprofits in Saluda, such as churches, were provided free water. Two years ago, the city changed its policy and provided the water to such organizations at cost over 6,000 gallons. Cole said beginning with the new budget July 1 those groups must pay for water and sewer at the same rates of other customers. Water and sewer customers will also see an increase in their bills. A $4.87 per month per use fee will be charged to water bills to fund the debt required from the installation of a water line from Saluda to Tryon. Sewer rates will also increase $3.13 per month per user, for an overall increase of $7.50 per

be just as great for people locally as well because it will place folk art all around town for them to enjoy.” A quilt trail is a series of wooden painted quilt blocks displayed outdoors along a designated route in various locations, such as storefronts, barns and gardens. month, per user. Part of these additional funds will also maintain the salary for one additional full-time water employee who was hired on in November of last year. Cole said there would be no increase in property tax rates or garbage collection fees this budget year. The city also plans to offer a 2.5-percent salary increase for city employees. Cole said he hopes Saluda would be able to put back $3,555 into reserves, which would bump up the available fund balance to more than 35 percent. He said this could change, however, as the board wants to complete upgrades to city hall in the next budget year. “The board really wants to finish the building – this includes completing heating and air and proposals to upgrade the building to make it more usable for office space,” Cole said. These renovation plans are not included in the proposed budget because no contracts have been approved. This year, the board approved the completion of a new roof, windows and brick for the building to repair structural issues. Saluda residents can view the proposed budget at city hall from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. dents may also apply to receive a quilt block, although the number available through the grant is limited. Quilt blocks received through the grant must be hung in an exterior location within the city of Landrum, primarily on Highways 14, 176 and North Trade or connecting streets on property that is commercially zoned. Wolochowicz announced the application process Monday, June 18. Information is available under “Links” on the city’s website, www. cityoflandrum.com. Those first blocks will be hung later in the summer. A block for Brookwood Park will soon follow and the city’s fourth quilt block, to be displayed at the Landrum Depot, is on hold until the depot renovation is complete. The first quilt block in the city was hung over the gym at Landrum Middle School in August 2011 as a gift from the Landrum Quilters. The block honors the spirit of

cooperation between quilters and the school, which hosts the club’s biennial quilt show. The Landrum Quilters is working with the city to select designs for the quilt blocks and to tie in local history to the designs selected. “The colorful blocks build a sense of community pride and, in Landrum, reflect the city’s quilting heritage,” said Wolochowicz. Landrum Quilters was first

established in 1980 and has since grown to include more than 130 members. The group hosts monthly programs, periodic workshops and philanthropic projects. The quilters meet the fourth Monday of every month at 9:30 a.m. at the Gowensville Community Center, as well as for occasional quilting bees. For more information about Landrum Quilters, contact Ellen Henderson at 864-895-0908.

PCHS soccer four named all-conference

The Lady Wolverine soccer team can celebrate the naming of four of its own to the Western Highland’s All-Conference team. Getting nods for all-conference are senior, Lorena Ferrand; freshman, Samantha Firby; sophomore, Lyric Flood; and junior, McKenna Calahan. Polk County Wolverine softball takes top prizes in Western Highlands Conference by Samantha Hurst

While the Polk County softball team found a home in the winner’s circle many times this year, Coach Jeff Wilson said he is still humbled by the acknowledgements the team has racked up since season end. “When you talk about a big conference with lots of kids participating – it’s a big honor,” Wilson said. “To me it speaks vol-

umes of our kids and especially of Jamie Hrobak as a person and a player for all the acknowledgement she’s received.” The Western Highlands Conference named Wilson Softball Coach of the Year and pitcher Jamie Hrobak Softball Player of the Year. Hrobak pitched three perfect games and 16 no hitters this season. She also hit .500, which

is in the top five batting averages in school history, Wilson said. “Jamie put up great numbers this season. She was a lead horse of a great team,” he said. “The coaches award it’s kind of a biproduct of team success, so I’m really thankful to my team and my assistants.” PCHS also saw six additional players named all-conference, the most of any team in the con-

ference, followed by Madison with five. Players named all-conference were Hrobak, Alyssa Montgomery, Brittany Jones, Ashley Kropp, Shaylyn Brown and Amber Lynch. Polk tied with Madison as coconference champs. Both teams had 12-2 records in the conference. Madison was 17-2 overall, while Polk went 20-3 overall.

Saluda students use new Little Park as outdoor classroom Saluda Elementary students have used the new park established next to their school as an outdoor classroom since it was created two years ago. Little Park was established by the Saluda Community Land Trust in 2010 with help from the Polk County Community Foundation. Fifth graders have mapped the trail through the park using compasses and measuring tapes. The old-school approach gave them an opportunity to use math and simple equipment to produce a fairly accurate map, much the way surveyors did for centuries before the advent of modern GPS and laser technologies. The trail is marked with a sign at the trailhead that includes information about some of the plants that can be found along the trail. The sign and the equipment used in this project were paid for by a Seeds For Education grant from the Polk County Community Foundation (PCCF). The park was named for George Robert “Bobby” Little III, who lived in Saluda from his birth in 1916 to 1937. Although he left Saluda at an early age and never lived there again, the town and people of the area made a lasting impact on his life and family. His family said they wanted to remember him by helping the town that gave him his start and provided him with warm memories. The Saluda Community Land Trust purchased the property from

Little’s widow, Mildred, at a fraction of the value of the property. The purchase was funded by the Bradley Fund at the PCCF. As a result of these efforts the Saluda students have perpetual access to this invaluable resource. - article submitted by Ronette Dill

Tryon luthier, Jay Lichty, to speak at Lanier Library June 19 Tryon luthier Jay Lichty, whose guitars and other instruments have received wide recognition, will speak about his work and show some of his instruments at the Lanier Library on Tuesday, June 19 at noon. The program is free and everyone is welcome. When the economic downturn began to affect his professional career in the construction industry, Jay Lichty, a lifelong musician, used some of his free time to build a ukulele, just for the fun of it. A few months later, he had an opportunity to expand his craft by taking a guitar-making workshop at the Tryon Arts and Crafts School. This class was given by the renowned luthier Wayne Henderson and it set Lichty on the road to a brand new career. Henderson and Lichty have since become friends and colleagues. “I am proud to say I taught Jay to build his first guitar. His guitars show real craftsmanship and sound really good,” said Henderson.

Lichty counts several international performers among his customers. Just a few weeks ago, Shohei Toyoda won Japan’s National Finger-picking Guitar Contest playing his Lichty guitar, and just two weeks ago Australian blues singer and guitarist Geoff Achison performed a song by Nina Simone on his Lichty guitar at Tryon Fine Arts Center. During intermission of that concert by Achison and Randall Bramblett, another of Lichty’s guitars was awarded to the winner of a raffle to benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation for cancer research. (This fundraising event was organized by John and Dianne Cash, owners of the Nature’s Storehouse health food store in Tryon.) You can hear more of this story and some Jay Lichty in his Tryon workshop. You may have recently received a letter from BCBSNC stating “effective July 1, 2012, pharmacies must sign up to provide more than a 30 day supply of medication.” It then goes on to state “We encourage you to transfer any of your current prescriptions sooner rather than later to avoid any disruption in your refill schedule.” They proceed to list 3 pharmacies in South Carolina for this purpose. This letter is very misleading, and has raised questions and concerns from our customers. To clarify: You are NOT REQUIRED to change anything regarding your prescription coverage and/or pharmacy of choice. As a matter of fact, independent pharmacies can continue to fill 30 day supply prescriptions without any interruption in service. Both Owen’s and Tryon Pharmacies are already signed up to provide a 90 day supply of medication with BCBSNC. Therefore, we urge you to disregard this letter and hope that you will continue using Owen’s Pharmacy or Tryon Pharmacy for your prescription needs. We certainly appreciate our loyal customers and thank you for your patronage. Steve & Melanie Cobb Rick Henriksen Owen’s Pharmacy Tryon Pharmacy
