An elegantly attired crowd gathered on the red carpet outside Tryon Theater Monday, June 18 in anticipation of the premier of “Get Better,” a film featuring locals Robert Linder and Beverly Moore. While Moore appears in the film only briefly, she said the experience was moving. “I’m so impressed with the production, and the part I play, though small, was a very touching part – something that really chokes you up,” said Moore, who plays Mrs. Alexander, the deceased wife of Roy Alexander. “Working with all of these great actors and cast members was an amazing experience.” Linder, who plays Roy, spent Monday evening at the back of Tryon Theatre with his wife, Mary, watching the film and observing the audience. Middle School that commissioners are extending an $1,800 break on tap fees for another 60 days. Commissioners met Monday, June 18 and discussed the surprising number of new taps on the approximate 2-mile water line under construction now.

their reactions, their experiences with each scene. He said he received numerous emails about the film, including one touching one from Jeanette Shackelford. “Robert, your facial expressions were magnificent; so poignant, so minimalist but right on target,” Shackelford’s email read. Linder said comments like these meant so much to him because it showed how people connected with his character and with the story. It was Linder’s first experience with the film in its entirety, though he had seen it at other edit points. “I had seen it in various forms but it was the first time I had seen the full film,” Linder said. “When I got to the very end I felt he [creator Chris White] had made the right decisions for the film and it was pretty powerful; it moved me.”

Chris explained the film did not have a formal script. Instead the story included about 40 scenes arranged by an outline. Chris said actors were then asked, to an extent, to wing it. “We knew what was going to happen and then we found actors that could improvise with us,” he said. “We had to find people who could get comfortable really fast (Continued on page 4)

or who were comfortable making stuff up.” Chris and his wife, writer Emily Reach White, helped the actors along, of course. If they were looking for a certain word or phrase to connect with a later scene, they would guide the actors toward those needs. Linder said the actors truly had to trust each other to pull off each scene. “Marissa Viola [the actress playing Ellie] and I knew if we could get in each other’s heads we wouldn’t come up empty,” Linder said. “It was like a real-life relationship. You have to learn to not push… if you pushed it wouldn’t work.” In various scenes, a viewer can see parallels to Linder’s life and Emily’s experience with her own father’s death. Linder found out just before filming began that he had a brain tumor. Emily’s father suffered for almost a decade with

late-stage Lyme disease. But the parallels seen in the film can really be made to many people’s lives affected by terminal illness, Emily said. When Ellie asks her father, “How was your day?” the audience sees flashes of activity – Roy singing, comparing the length of nails, napping in a hammock. (Continued on page 5)

Yet, Roy can’t seem to put together the pieces. Meanwhile, as he struggles internally to understand the gaps of time in his life, Ellie struggles with who she is and what she needs to be for her dad, her boss and for her love interest, Mike. The audience sees how their lives demand quick transitions from trying to go on as normal and the emotions of a disease bubbling up between the crevices. The life the Alexanders lead is not tidy and easily lived. Roy tells his daughter, “Tomorrow – we’ll get better tomorrow.” “Get Better,” the title of the film, has layers of meaning. On one level it’s about the nice but almost careless greeting given to someone who is sick, Chris said. But “Get Better” is not just about getting better from a disease, nor does “getting better” occur the way people expect. Emily said her hope is for audiences to see the need for more understanding about how people with illnesses are treated. She

customers. “I was surprised at how many (tapped on),” Odom said. “You’ve probably got another 30 homes out there who could tap on.” For another 60 days, potential customers can take advantage of the current $1,200 tap fee compared to $3,000 to tap on later. Odom said he will send out letters notifying the other homeowners along the line regarding the discounted tap fee opportunity. Commissioners on Monday approved a change order for the project, adding to the budget by approximately $28,000. The original bid was for $592,465 and the change order is for $28,069, increasing the project to $620,534. Odom said some of the taps were given in exchange for ease-

hopes society will “get better” in relation to how they see disease. “I like blending stories and science not because I think a poet would make a good surgeon or because I think making a great film will cure cancer… It’s because truths have to exist at the level of story before they’ll ever exist at the level of history,” said Emily. “It’s because great stories always envision and necessitate new technologies and new sciences — never the other way around. It’s because stories, not science or technology, but stories, are always on the leading-edge.” On the leading edge is also the way in which this film will be distributed. “We’re here to bring movies to people like yourself and not just through theaters but the Internet as well,” Chris said. In the near future, the film will be available for direct streaming from the site. In the meantime, the DVD of the film can be purchased at www.GetBetterTheMovie. com. The Tryon Film Society will also bring the film back for a second viewing at the Tryon Theatre Aug. 27-28.

ments, but the county had payment on five of the taps, which gave the county $6,000. Commissioners decided to take $22,069 out of fund balance and use the $6,000 made on taps to increase the funding for the project. Polk County decided last year for back-up purposes to connect its well system at the middle school campus to the Town of Columbus’ water system, which ends at the high school. The connection means the county will be hooked to all the towns’ water systems, as the systems in Columbus, Saluda and Tryon are all connected. The county is also considering adding to the project by running a water line to CooperRiis, which is located past the Mill Spring crossroads at the intersection of Hwy. 108 and Hwy. 9. Odom said the current project connecting the schools should take another 45 days.

On a recent visit to Tryon, Godfrey Rubens stopped by the Tryon Daily Bulletin building and commented on the building design, saying he was astonished to see that the building was equipped with machiolations. Above is a photo Rubens supplied showing machiolations on Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight, and below is a photo of the top of the Bulletin’s building. These machiolations are part of the defenses of medieval castles, Rubens said, and are constructed so that the building’s defenders may pour boiling pitch or oil on the attackers. “I understand [the Bulletin] building was a bank,” Rubens said, “so maybe the architect thought to frighten any possible robbers, though I find it hard to imagine the employees standing on the roof and hurling down boiling pitch.” (photos submitted by Godfrey Rubens)

Health agencies partner to develop WNC Healthy Impact Hospitals and health departments across WNC have partnered to develop WNC Healthy Impact, an innovative regional initiative designed to improve community health across a 16-county area. This partnership is one of only a few in North Carolina and the country taking a regional approach. The partnership is currently gathering data to understand community health status by county. This information will help determine high priority health issues through the community health assessment process. Though hospitals and health departments in WNC have partnered for years on improving health, they are exploring new ways to improve efficiency, consistency and collaboration while meeting agency assessment and planning requirements. There is now an additional federal requirement that non-profit hospitals must demonstrate the allocation

Paulo Coehlo is a Brazilian author who wrote “The Pilgrimage.” It is the story of his own pilgrimage journey to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. In the book he reflected, “The two hardest tests on the spiritual road are the patience to wait for the right moment and the courage not to be disappointed with what we encounter.” True, and difficult, especially when what we encounter is not what we want to encounter. Later Coehlo wrote, “Why is patience so important? Because it teaches us to pay “American Cuisine with a Twist” attention.” Corner of Peak St. & Hwy. 828-894-2440 Paying attention is the foun108 in Columbus dation of the spiritual life. The National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP) has elected Anne Vance of Pavillon Treatment Center in Mill Spring to its board of directors. Vance is CEO of the 80-bed not-for-profit residential treatment center, as well as the sober living residence and outpatient treatment center in Greenville, S.C. She is one of few women elected to the 20-member board. Board members are elected by a team of peers and fellow members, representing more than 830 individuals from around the nation. All officers serve a threeyear term. Pavillon is fully accredited and nationally recognized for having successfully treated hundreds of individuals and families from around the nation and overseas since 1996. “Since it is often the administrator or CEO who creates and sustains the vision of a treatment center, it is significant that Anne has achieved this deserved honor. She will continue to effectively represent Pavillon and the addiction treatment industry as well as she has for many years,” said
