Columbus completes sidewalk, curb repairs for safety by Leah Justice

The Town of Columbus recently made its downtown sidewalks safer by having hazardous areas repaired. Columbus Town Council met Thursday, June 21 and reviewed the project, which was completed on Thursday, June 14. The town spent $11,132, hiring Precision Safe Sidewalks to repair 193 sidewalk hazards. Precision Safe Sidewalks specializes in repairing trip hazards. The town also made repairs to curbs downtown along Ward, Walker, S. Peak and Mills streets. Town manager Jonathan Kanipe said by repairing the sidewalks instead of removing and replacing them, the town saved $41,718. “I was very pleased with the work and how quickly they completed it,” Kanipe told town council. “It was a day and a half and they were done.”

queen of the queens,” Mary said. Red Horse Inn was also listed on the Top 10 Places to Enjoy Fall Colors (AAA), Best Honey-

Council approved the sidewalk repair project during its May meeting at a cost of $7,861. Council also approved curb repairs totaling $550 during its May meeting. The project initially was to repair approximately 129 sidewalk hazards. In approving the project, council asked the town’s staff to investigate having the repair company address other areas along Walker Street (to Simms Street) and along South Peak Street. An additional 64 hazardous areas were identified, with the additional work costing $2,721. “This should make the downtown area a much safer place for residents and improve walkability dramatically,” Kanipe said. The project was paid for through Powell Bill funds, which are allotted to towns annually by the state for town-owned street and sidewalk repair and maintenance.

Along the shores of Minnesota and Wisconsin lakes, they gathered wild rice (not really rice at all). In the Midwest, French trappers and fur traders traversed the river ways, fishing and hunting game. Early immigrants learned to plant corn, hunt local game and forage for wild rice. Why I am proud to be an American Editor’s note: Frances Smith submitted this essay that her son, Michael Smith, wrote as a seventh grader in Polk County in the mid80s. I am proud to be an American because we have the right to speak our freedom and feelings. We also have the right to be what we want to be and do what we want to do, but abide by the rules and laws. One other reason why I am proud to be an American is because it is the home of the brave. It is also

Janke wins jelly beans at Resource Fair At the June 16 Resource Fair at Roseland Community Center in Tryon, Jennie Smith, a Hospice of the Carolina Foothills volunteer, and Rev. Walter Bryan of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church discuss which one of them is going to win the featured jar of jelly beans. Rev. Bryan said he has been at other fairs this spring where the “jelly bean guessing game” has intrigued folks, whose guesses have ranged from 250 to more than 5,000. The actual number was 1,575. The winner was Jane Janke, who guessed 1,565. (photo submitted by Marsha VanHecke)

The Fourth of July, as we know, is Independence Day. Going back in history to 1776, we can recount certain events. Fifty-six men met together and signed a new document.
