Tryon begins McCown St. improvements by Leah Justice
The House of Flags Museum in Columbus was featured on WSPA, channel 7, on Tuesday, July 3 at 7:30 p.m. on the “Scene on 7” program. Robert Williamson of the House of Flags said Kate Valentine interviewed him for about an hour on Monday, while at the same time 34 people from Tryon Estates toured the museum. “It made for an interesting afternoon,” Williamson said.
Here’s a list of upcoming meetings and events for area nonprofit community and governmental organizations:

Downtown Tryon’s McCown Street will soon be made oneway and have added parking and pedestrian areas. Construction along McCown Street began Monday, July 2,
and the street is closed during construction. Part of downtown’s Tryon’s Streetscape project, McCown Street improvements will include approximately 20 angled parking spaces along the new one-way
northbound street. The new parking spaces will be located on the railroad side of McCown Street. Once construction is complete, (Continued on page 5)

Vacant storefronts spur Tryon community brainstorming session on Monday, July 9 by Samantha Hurst
On Saturday, June 30, two businesses, Café at My Place and Kathleen’s Gallery, packed up their storefronts on N. Trade Street in Tryon. Kathleen’s Gallery relocated to Saluda, and Café at My Place
is looking for a new location. These moves and the loss of other downtown businesses have prompted interested parties to schedule a brainstorming session Monday, July 9 at 5 p.m. at the Tryon Depot. Andy Millard of Millard and Company will facilitate the meet-
ing. He said business owners of Tryon decided to organize the meeting in an effort to generate positive ideas and facilitate the connection of property owners with prospective tenants and/or buyers.

Tryon Garden Club donates funds to restore Morris The Tryon Garden Club, the oldest garden club in Tryon and a solid fan of Morris, voted at its June board meeting to donate funds to the Town of Tryon to help restore Morris to his rightful place on the corner of Pacolet and Trade streets. The Tryon Garden Club has maintained the Depot Garden directly opposite Morris for many years. Club officials said members have come to think of the Depot Garden and Morris belonging together. So in keeping with the club’s long tradition of supporting the beautification of Tryon, members felt it was a logical decision to help restore Morris. The Tryon Garden Club is the owner and operator of Pearsons Falls. The acquisition of the property that is now Pearsons Falls was the result of concerned garden club members in Tryon who came together to save the site from an unknown fate. The club maintains that site as well as the Depot Garden
and other sites in Tryon. The Tryon Garden Club is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization with membership open to the public. For more information, contact Delia Tittle at 828-859-8372. The “Save Morris Ransom Project” (SMRP) is a group of Tryonite volunteers working hand-in-hand with the Town of Tryon to generate support for the repair and maintenance of Tryon’s town icon, which welcomes everyone to “The friendliest town in the south.” SMRP members said they appreciate the Tryon Garden Club’s donation. Tax-deductible donations can be made payable to the Town of Tryon, indicating Morris Ransom Project. They can be dropped by Tryon Town Hall or mailed to 301 N. Trade Street, Tryon, N.C. 28782. Donations can also be made through PayPal on the project’s website: www.savemorris.webs.com. – article submitted by Wyndy Morehead and Patti D’Arbanville

vehicles will be able to access Pacolet Street from South Trade Street near Sidestreet Pizza. Coming from Pacolet Street, vehicles will no longer be able to turn right on McCown Street to access South Trade Street. Instead, they will cross the railroad tracks and turn right onto Trade Street. McCown Street improvements also include two 40-foot teardrop planters at the ends of the street. The town also has plans to place retractable traffic bollards so the street can be closed easily during town festivals and other events, such as the Thursday farmers market. The farmers market will be held in the Depot parking lot today, Thursday, July 5, and next Thursday, July 12. The McCown Street construction is scheduled to be complete by next Friday, July 13, said project manager Crys Armbrust. Interim Tryon Town Manager Joey Davis said the town has asked the N.C. Department of Transportation (DOT) to allow left turns onto Pacolet Street from Trade Street, which are currently not allowed. DOT is in charge of changing traffic patterns because Trade Street is a state-owned road. Davis said it is the town’s hope that the state will change the traffic light to add a left turn signal at the intersection.
The town has also asked Norfolk Southern, railroad owner, to allow a pedestrian crosswalk over the tracks from McCown to Trade streets. Other phases of the downtown Streetscape project are nearing completion as Trace & Company has been implementing a new sidewalk with curb and guttering along Trade Street this week. A new intersection at Trade and New Market streets has also been completed. “These past weeks have been incredibly gratifying,” said Armbrust. “Our long wait is finally over, and our vision is being admirably implemented. Downtown Tryon is receiving its due attention, which is good for everyone – residents and visitors alike.” Tryon officials said the New Market project has addressed a decades-old drainage issue in front of the businesses at 75 Trade Street. The DOT provided engineering assistance and final drawings for the upgrade, which also includes a portion of parking lot asphalting to redirect water. The Town of Tryon and the Polk County Community Foundation’s Mary F. Kessler Fund funded the projects. Improvement elements for the Streetscape project are drawn from the Milone & MacBroome Streetscape Master Plan, commissioned by the Tryon Downtown Development Association (TDDA).

Letter to the Editor
Concerning Tryon a ‘ghost town’
To the Editor: Let’s all work together to solve this problem, but we need to ask some serious questions that got us into the shape we are in. 1. Why does the Town of Tryon visitor’s up-and-running website (www.exploretryon. com) fail to list any events for 2012? Why does the website currently list 2011 events such as the schedule for Summer Tracks for last year? Why are there no listings under major headings
for antique shops, gift shops and other stores and services? This website was paid for with tax money and has been totally neglected. The website was developed by a Washington state company and has obviously been abandoned. Why was a local company not selected to develop or now at least maintain the site? If I was considering coming to Tryon and saw only last year’s events through 8/11 and nothing listed for 2012, I would not shop or visit Tryon. These are questions the town of Tryon officials should answer. In the meantime, let’s get this website current, promoting 2012 events. It’s embarrassing to see! – Rolfe Wardner, Tryon

How many times do you and I ask that question? Whether waking in the middle of the night, or traveling around the world, or worrying about making an appointment, time matters. Time passes, sometimes slowly, sometimes more quickly than we would like. Sometimes we lose track of time. Sometimes we waste it. Sometimes time is an incredible gift. Lichty speaks, plays at Lanier Library Brown Bag program Those who attended the Lanier Library’s recent Brown Bag program with Jay Lichty enjoyed two hours of music and stories from the local luthier about how he transitioned from a home builder to a ukulele and guitar custom builder. Lichty said it took him about 20 years to find this avocation, but his exposure to music and performing goes back even longer. He has been in the area for about as long, and he said, “I guess I can say I’m from Tryon now, I think.” Lichty brought along six guitars and two ukuleles that he had built since opening his studio in 2009. Each instrument was unique not only in the exotic woods used, construction and the attention to detail, but each had a unique tonal quality when he played them. With each instrument he played, Lichty told a story of its history or its influence on him and played a song he had

written. Those who attended a recent concert at Tryon Fine Arts Center featuring Randall Bramlett and Geoff Achison, sponsored by Lichty, heard the renowned Australian guitarist Achison play a Lichty guitar. Bramlett has since
ordered his own Lichty guitar. Lichty’s guitars are in hands of performers from everyday music lovers to professional musicians. As of the end of 2011, he had made more than 53 guitars and 28 ukuleles and the waiting list is approaching six months.

First let me explain the meaning of the artificial bids: (1) a forcing-to-game Spade raise promising at least 4 trumps, (2) showed 2 key cards without the Queen of trumps or a 5th Spade, and (3) asks partner to bid 7 Spades with 3rd round control in Clubs or show a red King. After the opening lead of the Diamond 10 to declarers Ace, he led a trump to the Ace and got the bad news that West had a sure trump winner. All was not lost since declarer could get his 12th trick from either a Heart finesse, which turns out to offer a 2 way finesse situation or by finessing for the Club Queen. Without the benefit of knowing the location
of either key card this looks like a pure guess situation. But who needs to guess when there’s a sure fire play to guarantee success. All declarer has to do is set up West for an end play. He does this by drawing a 2nd trump with his King, cash the heart Ace and play 2 more rounds of Diamonds. Now when declarer puts West in with a trump he has guaranteed his contract. West has no safe out card. He either gives declarer a ruff and a sluff, a free Club finesse or a free ruffing finesse in Hearts. The solution to making this hand is both simple and elegant. As I’ve stressed in other articles you should leave taking a finesse until it’s the last thing available.

Kindermusik and Art Camp at TFAC

Bereavement Care Resources for help with loss and grief
Last week, Studio A, downstairs in Tryon Fine Arts Center, was brightened by colorful mats, wall decorations and music. Families gathered on the floor to talk and play. Kindermusik and art camp had come to Tryon Fine Arts Center. Kindermusik is a 40-minute program that allows children from infants to kindergarteners to listen and interact with music. Every series of Kindermusik has a different theme, and last week’s was “Zoo Train.” Tryon Fine Arts Center’s Kindermusik teacher Bryant Belin taught the children about different kinds of animals and played songs that tied in to the theme. The kids learned how to play instruments along with the songs. They not only listened and played with the music, but they used hand motions and danced along as well. St. Luke’s nurse, Sandahl, presents research at summit in D.C. Inga Sandahl, an ER nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital who is also studying for her nurse practitioner degree, recently presented the results of a year of research at an economic summit in Washington, D.C. Sandahl’s presentation focused on her conclusion that states cannot afford President Obama’s proposed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) in 2014 when federal poverty guidelines are changed and millions of additional people are covered by Medicaid. For the state of North Carolina, Sandahl said, an additional 543,000 people would be covered by Medicaid, which would add $871 million to the state budget annually. “There is absolutely no way states can afford 11.6 million more people on Medicaid,” Sandahl said. As a third-year student in the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
graduate program at Western Carolina University, Sandahl is required to research, publish and present her findings. With direction from her professors, Sandahl said, “I chose to focus my research on the effect on Medicaid in 2014. Since I am not in politics and I don’t have a background in law, I often took each paragraph and researched the wording . . . I had to understand the numerous components,” she said. She submitted her abstract to be presented during the annual Economic Summit and found out shortly after that her research was selected to be presented with time for questions and answers. During her year of research, Sandahl worked full-time in the ER at St. Luke’s Hospital. After moving in 2006 from Florida to Saluda, Sandahl began working in 2009 at St. Luke’s, “the friendliest (Continued on page 23)
