First Landrum Quilt Trail blocks ready for installation

The first two wooden quilt blocks to be installed on the Landrum Quilt Trail have been completed. The block on the left, based on a quilt block called “Courthouse Steps,” will be installed at Landrum City Hall, while the one of the right, called “Jacob’s Ladder,” will be installed at the Landrum Fire Department. A quilt trail is a series of wooden painted quilt blocks displayed outdoors along a designated route in various locations, such as storefronts, barns and gardens. The Landrum Quilt Trail received a $5,000 grant through the Mary F. Kessler Fund of the Polk County Community Foundation. The Kessler Fund grant will provide quilt blocks for O.P. Earle Elementary School, the Landrum Library, the Hospice Thrift Barn and the Thermal Belt Habitat for Humanity ReStore. (photo by Leah Justice)

School at Harmon Field in 2006. In 2011, Tryon Painters and Sculptors moved to 26 Maple Street in downtown Tryon. The Fusion show showcases the talents of members of Tryon Arts and Crafts School and Tryon Painters and Sculptors. Penny Kessler, a member of both organizations, is exhibiting a fused glass piece featuring poppies, an excellent representation of her figurative interest in painting, translated to the mercurial craft of fused glass. A forged iron lamp with a fused glass shade made by Tryon Arts and Crafts member Walt Myers combines Myers’ skills in iron forging with his exploration into fused glass. Tryon Painters and Sculptors will have a strong showing of their members’ work, from realistic to abstract. Patricia Novella’s piece “Inner Flow” is representative of her work in mixed media. The Fusion show opens Friday, Aug. 24, with an opening reception from 6-8 p.m. at the gallery at Tryon Arts and Crafts School at 373 Harmon Field Road in Tryon. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet many of the artists and view the art, while enjoying light refreshments. The District One administrative team, made up of school principals, assistant principals, instructional coaches and district office leaders, was in training on Wednesday, Aug. 8. Each year the administrative leadership in District One Schools participates in professional development designed to meet the ever-changing needs of students and the research trends that affect education. District One Schools partners with Milliken to use the training facilities located at the Milliken Research Center. Milliken’s facilities provide a “retreat-like” setting located close to District. Mike Smith, District One board member and Milliken sales director, spoke to the group and welcomed them on behalf of Milliken. Mr. Smith challenged the group to “never forget your passion” and to remember that every day they have an opportunity to impact children. The topic for the day’s train-
