Back to books at Landrum High
School’s back in session, and that means school buses are back on the roads. Area drivers are urged to use extra caution and obey all laws regarding buses and crosswalks. School started yesterday, Monday, Aug. 20, for Landrum and Campobello students, and it will start next Monday, Aug. 27 for Polk County students.

Green Creek man arrested for outdoor marijuana discovered in helicopter search by Leah Justice
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has another Polk County man in custody facing charges of growing marijuana plants. The sheriff’s office arrested Greg Nelson Henderson, 51, of
563 Phillip Henderson Road and charged him with felony manufacturing marijuana. Officers said last Thursday, Aug. 16, a N.C. Highway Patrol helicopter spotted 32 marijuana plants around Henderson’s home.

Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi. His mother, Gladys Presley, was carrying twins, but his brother Jessie was stillborn, making Elvis an only child. Just before high school, his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee. Elvis attended Humes High School, graduating in 1953. In 1954, he began his career as a recording artist with Sun Records, and by 1956 he was famous. His music was revolutionary at the time, with influences from both gospel music and the R&B music he enjoyed as a teenager. Despite his career, Elvis was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1958 and began a two-year term of service. In 1959, while stationed in Friedberg, Germany, he met his future wife, Priscilla Beaulieu. They married on May 1, 1967. After his return from serving in the army, Elvis continued his career as a musician and actor. He starred in over 30 films. As his career progressed, he became a popular Las Vegas performer, known for his eccentric fashion style. Elvis has sold just over a billion records and is a multi-platinum artist, with numbers still climbing today. He won three Grammy Awards for his music and was nominated 14 times. He was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award before the age of 40. He was called “The King of Rock and Roll,” “The King,” or simply “Elvis.” He was also famous for saying “Thank you, thank you very much” in his trademark deep voice. Elvis Presley died at his home, Graceland, on August 16, 1977. Today, Graceland is a museum open to the public. Presley remains one of the 20th Century’s most prolific pop culture icons.

Emerson String Quartet to kick off TCA season Oct. 19 The Tryon Concert Association will present the first concert of the 2012/2013 season, the Emerson String Quartet, on Friday, Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. at the Tryon Fine Arts Center. The Emerson String Quartet stands alone in the history of string quartets with an unparalleled list of achievements over three decades: more than 30 acclaimed recordings since 1987, nine Grammy Awards (including two for best classical album), three Gramophone Awards and the coveted Avery Fisher Prize. The quartet was formed in 1976 and took its name from the great American poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson. Violinists Eugene Drucker and Philip Setzer alternate in the first chair position and are joined by violist Lawrence Dutton and cellist David Finckel. The quartet, based in New York City, has collaborated in concerts and on recordings

with some of the greatest artists of recent time. Along with the Tryon Fine Arts Center, the quartet’s recent schedule has included perfor-
mances at Ravinia, Caramoor, Interlochen, Tanglewood and the Aspen music festivals as well as Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival and Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Ore. Throughout its history, the Emerson String Quartet has garnered an international reputation for groundbreaking chamber music projects and correlated recordings. In 1988, the quartet attracted national attention with the presentation of the six Bartók quartets in a single evening for its Carnegie Hall debut. Opus 20, #4, Dvorak’s D Minor Quartet and Brahms’ String Quartet #2 in A Minor. Wolverines pull off four-peat to beat Tuscola 25-20 by Fulton Hampton
The question on everyone’s mind had to be could Polk County pull off the “four-peat” against Tuscola with one of its youngest teams in the last 10 years. No easy task going into Tuscola’s home field against a team determined to stop the streak at three. Certainly not a pretty win – a game marred with multiple penalties – but Polk came away with the win 25 -20. Led by their quarterback, Alex Philpott, along with the “bend but don’t break” defense, Polk used a variety of weapons. Philpott was 18 of 22 passing for 240 yards with 75 yards rushing on 22 attempts. His primary targets were Anthony Carson (1 touchdown, 117 yards) and Reese Schlabach, as expected. Jordan Smith also had a big night; he had only two receptions but accounted for 35 yards and one touchdown and set up the first touchdown, a one-yard plunge by Philpott. Smith also had an interception. The Wolverines had 352 yards of total offense on the night. However, it looked like it might be a long night based on Tuscola’s first series of plays. They came out throwing the ball with the first play, a 35-yard reception, and the second play resulted in a pass interference call. They appeared headed to the end zone, but an interception on the five yard line by Philpott stopped the drive. After Polk gave the ball back on a fumble, Tuscola scored first with 4:08

left to go in the first quarter. Polk scored its first touchdown at the 9:31 mark of the second quarter but missed the extra point. The half ended with Tuscola up 7-6. The second half was controlled by Polk. Tuscola tried an on-side kick, giving Polk the ball on the 44. Polk took full advantage, marching down the field and finally scoring on a 25-yard pass play to Anthony Carson. Polk led 12 -7 after missing the 2-point attempt. Polk later added another score via Philpott’s long quar-
terback “sneak,” making the score 18-7. Tuscola came back with another score to close the gap to 18-14 Polk. Jordan Smith then scored on the pass from Philpott and with Gage Stone’s extra point made it 25–14 Polk. Tuscola put together another drive late scoring with 3:05 left in the game, making it 25-20. But Polk was able to maintain possession, aided by an unnecessary roughness penalty on Tuscola, and ran out the clock for the win. Ollis commented, “We grew a lot as a football team (tonight).
It was two young football teams; both made a lot of mistakes. Down at the end we made fewer. We were down 7-6 at half but we did not panic. My concern coming in was the fact they did not have anybody playing both ways and they ran hurry up offense. “I thought our kids responded well. Coach Jamie Thompson did a great job getting signals in and we were able to get set every time and make some plays. This was a big win for this football program. I’m very proud of our boys.” Polk plays Brevard Friday, Aug. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at home.

The Pacolet Area Conservancy and Walnut Creek Preserve invite the public to a presentation about “How plants, genes and memes move across the landscape: Why interactions matter to conservation” on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 10:30 a.m. to be held at the Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve. Dr. Zack Murrell, professor and curator of the herbarium, director of the SouthEast Regional Network of Expertise and Collections (SERNEC) and professor of biology at Appalachian State University, visited Polk County this spring while gathering data on the state and federal listed (threatened) dwarf-flowered heartleaf (Hexastylis naniflora) that grows in the region (some are growing on PAC-protected properties). At this presentation, Dr. Murrell will be talking about his research on dwarf-flowered heartleaf, as well as the biodiversity of the local landscape, conservation issues and how residentes can get involved as citizen scientists.
