Polk is still awaiting approval from the state to reclassify the Lake Adger watershed as a class III watershed, which will affect Polk and Henderson counties. Henderson County has not given its support for the new reclassification and it is unknown when the state will approve the reclassification in order for Polk to move forward with using the water. Once the lake has been permitted by the state as a water source, Polk will be able to pull a maximum of eight million gallons of water per day out of Lake Adger. The county has future plans to construct a water plant on property it owns at the county transfer station in Mill Spring.

Notice is hereby given that at 7:00pm, on Monday, September 10, 2012, in the auditorium of the Polk County Middle School, 321 Wolverine Trail, Mill Spring, NC, the Polk County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the following ordinance:

Studies done in 2009 concluded that if water were to rise over the top of the dam the structure would become unstable. However, commissioners said that water has never risen to the top of the dam in its history. Engineers agreed it would take a flood of

Polk physician Lassiter offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy Dr. Lonnie Lassiter of Polk County began offering hyperbaric oxygen therapy on Aug. 6 at Rutherford Wound Care & Hyperbarics. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment in which the entire body is under increased atmospheric pressure and the patient breathes 100-per-

cent oxygen. “The idea behind hyperbarics is that it pushes oxygen to the wound bed and helps with healing,” said Lassiter, supervising physician of the center. Rutherford Regional Health System

Where We Work An in-depth look at an area business

person featured: Terri Henderson, owner business: Doggie Barber Shop phone number: 864-457-4490 Address: 202 Earle Street, Landrum, behind CVS email: doggiebarbershop@charter.net operating hours: Monday through Friday, open at 8 a.m., pick-up as late as 6 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., pick-up by 4 p.m. Nature of business: Dog and cat grooming and seasonal boarding Principal Owner: Terri Henderson year founded: 2005 Number of employees: Four groomers how’s business? Business is good. I have four great groomers. They all do a wonderful job and love what they do. They care deeply about all the animals they groom.

One thing I wish everyone knew about this business: These animals are our customers’ fur babies and are treated with love and respect. We welcome visitors to come visit our shop and look around any time. We keep a clean shop. If a groomer does not allow you to see where they groom, there is something they don’t want you to see. Something you offer that a customer won’t

find elsewhere: We groom all dogs, no matter their size, and we can also do just nails and external anal glands. I have two groomers who groom cats also. advice to young entrepreneurs: Always call previous employers to find out about people before hiring them. One bad employee can make a big difference to your business. Trust your gut feelings – don’t hire them. my first job: Waitress at Mr. A’s Deli Your role model (in business or in life generally): My mother. She raised two kids by herself until she remarried when I was in sixth grade. She is a great mother and a wonderful, sweet person. The key to a successful business: Communicate with your customers about what they want. Keep a clean shop. Always welcome visitors to your shop any time they stop by. If you don’t love what you’re doing, find something else to do.

opened the new wound care center this spring. Other benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy are that it decreases bacterial formation, enhances cell growth and stimulatesa capillary development, Lassiter said. According to Lassiter, hyperbaric medicine has been around since the 1800s. It has been used to treat a variety of ailments, including carbon

monoxide poisoning, although its use at Rutherford Wound Care & Hyperbarics is only for the treatment of wounds. “Medicare has done extensive research on hyperbaric therapy that’s based in science, and we only do Medicareapproved treatments in our center,” Lassiter said. “After the 10,000 treatments I’ve overseen, it clearly works.” Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is administered in a pressurized chamber, an acrylic cylinder where the patient can watch television, listen to the radio or

sleep. During treatment, oxygen in the chamber is increased until the pressure reaches the equivalent of 70 feet of sea water, Lassiter said. “That’s why we refer to treatments as ‘dives,’” he explained. “We are referring to the pressure in the chamber. Patients should feel nothing except the need to clear their ears. It’s a very benign experience.” Patients can communicate with staff through a telephone. Those with claustrophobia or anxiety can take a sedative prior to treatment. Each treat-

ment takes around 90 minutes, Lassiter said. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may not be needed for all wounds; it has been indicated for use in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, bone infections and radiation injuries. A doctor’s referral is not needed to be seen at Rutherford Wound Care & Hyperbarics. Columbus police officer earns criminal investigations certificate The North Carolina Justice Academy recently announced that Sergeant Nicholas Correll Stott of the Columbus Police Department recently completed the Criminal Investigations Certificate Program at the academy. The Criminal Investigations Certificate program is designed to recognize the achievement of law enforcement professionals who have dedicated themselves to investigating crimes in their respective communities. Upon completion of the program, officers will have mastered several important aspects of criminal investigations and related topics, thus achieving a high level of professionalism for themselves as well as their department. The Criminal Investigation Certificate Program requires the participant to be a sworn law enforcement officer of a law enforcement agency and have at least two years of experience

investigating crimes. In addition, participants are required to have their agency’s head approval to participate in the program because of the time spent away from the agency in efforts to obtain the training needed to complete the program. The certificate program requires 500 hours of training with a focus on criminal investigations. Stott completed the program with well over the 500 required hours of training. In January 2012, Stott completed the Traffic Enforcement and Investigations Certificate Program through the academy, which consisted of an additional 500 hours of training in the field of traffic safety. The North Carolina Justice Academy, with campuses located in Salemburg and Edneyville, develops and conducts training courses for local and state law enforcement professionals. The academy provides training and

Oakes to be honored at concert Lesley Oakes, Foothills Music Club founder, will be honored at a concert on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 3 p.m., at Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Tryon. Pianist Chenny Gan, from Bavaria, will present a program of Haydn, Debussy, Schumann, Gershwin, and Kapustin. Gan will perform to honor Oakes and as a benefit for the Foothills Music Club’s Young Musicians Scholarship Fund. The Foothills Music Club will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2013, and this Sept. 9 concert will be the kick-off event for a 16-month celebration, recognizing the important role the music club has played and continues to play in Polk and Rutherford counties, Landrum and beyond. The mission of the Foothills Music Club is to give its members encouragement to continue practicing their craft of music, with opportunities to perform for each other, and to provide scholarships for young musicians who qualify to continue their music study, purchase music, repair or purchase an instrument. Oakes happily tells the story of the founding of the Foothills Music Club. Lesley and Mervin Oakes knew Kathleen and Joseph Erwin before either family moved to Tryon. After both families were established in the area, Lesley, who played flute, began playing concerts with Kathleen, a violinist, and Joseph, an organist and pianist. They played frequently at the Congregational Church in Tryon and in the homes of both

families. From time to time, other musicians were asked to perform with them in the concerts. One of these was pianist Genevieve Ross. Oakes spoke with Ross about the idea of having a music club, and they decided to send a letter to area musicians to ascertain their willingness to be part of such an organization. Oakes already was a member of the Spartanburg Philharmonic Music Club, and it was that club’s format that gave her the impetus for the mission statement of the Foothills Music Club. The first meeting of the Foothills Music Club was held March 10, 1988. Besides founder Lesley Oakes, two other members who helped the club establish a solid foundation were Betty Van Buskirk and Kathleen Erwin, both well-known musicians in Tryon. Erwin was the club’s first president. The three major scholarships given each year by the Foothills Music Club are named for Oakes, Van Buskirk and Erwin. Today, 25 years later, many musicians in Polk and Rutherford counties and Landrum credit their membership in the Foothills Music Club for their continuing to practice the fine art of music making. In addition, over the years, more than $36,000 has been given to young musicians in the form of scholarships from the music club. Two public performances are given each year by music club members. - article submitted by Foothills Music Club

Brannon Poore, owner of JB Trees, along with his team, is planning a church in Landrum called The Well. Poore said The Well’s mission will be to show Jesus to people through gospel-centered truth, love, giving, serving and sacrifice. “Serving the community for Jesus will be the way that we change our city and reach a lost people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” Poore said. “The Well is committed to serving the city so much so that our first order of business before anything else was to buy an enclosed trailer and stock it with any items that could be used to love and serve the community.” Poore said this trailer will contain many different items designed to make it possible to pull up at any house, trailer park or apartment complex and do local mission work or recreational games for neighborhood children.

He said the organizers hope that by doing this type of work, they may be able to build relationships with people. “Only then will they allow us to speak into their lives and offer the transforming truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” Poore said. Poore said organizers have purchased the trailer but do not have the resources to stock it at the moment. He said they hope the community will help by donating items and funds to stock the trailer.
