This is your chance to visit many local agricultural gems that aren’t always open to the public. Owners, growers and breeders will share first-hand experiences of their journeys in the area. More than 15 stops will be highlighted on this year’s one-day tour. Some of the past favorites such as Nelon Knoll Farm, Emerald Springs Farm and Overmountain Vineyards will return, and many new locations such as Found Feather Farm, Achin’ Back Farm and Parker-Binns Winery have been added. Best soil testing time is now Late summer is the perfect time to take soil samples for testing, for two reasons. First, the time between mailing your samples and receiving the test results is reduced dramatically. Samples sent now are normally processed in less than two weeks. Second, when soil samples are taken in late summer, the results are available to allow landowners and growers to apply whatever lime and nutrients are needed. Fall applications of lime are extremely beneficial. “We really should think of soil testing like going for your annual check-up at the doctor,” said

Ethan Henderson, agricultural agent for Polk County. “Soil test results help inform property owners what lime and nutrients are needed. If you have done a good job in the past, the results may recommend reducing the lime and fertilizer needed, thus saving money,” added Henderson. Soil testing in North Carolina is offered at no cost to the participants. Participants must package the soil samples for mailing and pay the postage. Soil boxes and forms are available from the Polk County Extension Center in Columbus. – article submitted by John Vining

Another rabid skunk found by Leah Justice

Jim Wiprut, H.I.S.

A second rabid skunk was found in the Pea Ridge area within days of the capture of another rabid skunk in Mill Spring. Polk County Animal Control Officer Michael Herman said the second skunk was captured on Friday, Sept. 7 off Hwy. 108 in Pea Ridge. The first rabid animal of the year, also a skunk, was captured on Tuesday, Sept. 4. The second skunk attacked a cat and killed some kittens in the Pea Ridge Community, Herman said.

He captured the skunk and sent it to the state veterinarian lab in Raleigh, N.C. for testing and received the positive rabies results back on Wednesday, Sept. 12. The first rabid skunk was also discovered off Hwy. 108 but in Mill Spring. The first skunk had attacked farm animals. Herman said he is trying to schedule Sept. 22 for a rabies clinic in the Mill Spring area for both Mill Spring and Pea Ridge residents. The exact date, time and location will be publicized.

“I tell everyone to get their mammograms — you can tell one person and that might be the nudge to get them there, and may be what saves their life.” - San Toye Yelton, a patient at The Mammography Place

Your well-being is the focus of our care. San Toye Yelton of Rutherfordton has always gotten mammograms, but the importance of the screening didn’t hit home until her mother had a routine mammogram that showed she had breast cancer. “My mom was 79 and had never had a mammogram,” San Toye says. “I was coming for mine and convinced her to come have one too. They called her the next day with the results and she had her mastectomy immediately. The doctor said she had probably had breast cancer for at least six years.” Now, getting the routine screening has become even more important for San Toye. She says she’s much more conscious of the importance of prevention. “When it touches you that closely, you really are much more aware.” The Mammography Place and its technologists are fully accredited and certified by the American College of Radiology to provide the highest quality screening mammography services to the women of Rutherford County and the surrounding area.

Absentee voting for Spartanburg County residents Interested in absentee voting? Find out if you qualify by going to www.scvotes.org. Click on Voters in the upper left corner; then click on absentee voting to see the list of qualifications. You may also visit the voter registration and elections office or call 864-596-2549. To vote by absentee ballot, a qualified voter or a member of his immediate family must request an application in person, by telephone or by mail. If you qualify, you will then be sent an absentee application which you must sign and return before a ballot can be mailed to you. Many voters do not understand that an application is required. More than 1,000 application requests had been received as of last week, and officials were anticipating receiving many more. Ballots should be ready to begin mailing on or about Oct. 1. Mailing takes several days. Remember the application must be requested, completed and received by our office before a ballot can be mailed to you. Once you receive the actual ballot, make sure you understand and follow all directions in returning the ballot. Absentee ballots must be physically received by the county registration and elections office no later than 7 p.m. on election day in order to be counted. If you qualify to vote absentee, you may vote by machine in the voter registration and

Skyuka Fine Art features show of Nelson’s recent work Opening reception set for Sept. 29 Skyuka Fine Art has announced it will hold an opening reception for a show of Richard Christian Nelson’s “Recent Work” on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 5-8 p.m. This show features Nelson’s paintings as well as the drawings for which he is becoming increasingly known. Local landscapes and many paintings from his travels are featured, as well as still life, figurative and portrait works from the last year. Nelson has been particularly focused on trying to capture the light and atmosphere in his representational works of people, places and things. The opening reception coincides with the town’s popular Tryon Gallery Trot, featuring 13 galleries, shops, restaurants and organizations that participate with

openings, demonstrations and live music in the center of town. Nelson’s show runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 31. Skyuka Fine Art also announced that this show will be featured nationally in American Art Collector magazine. There will be an article about the show in the October issue of this prestigious publication. Free copies will be available at the gallery to commemorate Tryon and the gallery’s foray into the national art spotlight. As the gallery approaches its second anniversary, it has invited artists with national reputations to join the terrific local and regional artists who show here. Nelson’s “Recent Work” is the first of three consecutive solo shows. November will feature Bart Lindstrom from Atlanta, and in December Nashville’s Dawn Whitelaw will be featured. Wolverine women’s volleyball takes out Mtn. Heritage by Elizabeth Trautman

The Lady Wolverines game against Mt. Heritage on Tuesday, Sept. 4 gave Polk a chance to show their claws as they battled for their 3-0 win. The Wolverines started with a smashing 25-to-12 win in the first game. The Lady Wolverines played consistent strong shots and Sarah Phipps, #12 for Polk County, made it hard for the Cougars to finish a point out. However, what seemed to be an easy win suddenly became a neck-and-neck battle for the next two games. As the second game tied up 10 to 10, it was evident that Mtn. Heritage was not going to give up any wins to Polk that easily again. Polk’s Katie Ruff helped the Wolverines score key shots. The Lady Wolverines then earned six straight points, only to have Mtn. Heritage come back for six more consecutive points themselves. The Wolverines realized, as they took their first time out at 20 to 19, that the Cougars were going to be a challenge. Polk County looked to take the game 24 to 21, but in a turn of events, Mtn. Heritage aced four shots in a weak spot of the Polk team.

Taylor Parker of the Cougars covered most of the return shots from Polk. Despite that setback, Polk came back and was able to pull out a 27-to-25 victory in the second game. The third game looked be a lot like the second one when the teams tied 10 to 10, and it became evident Polk would be

playing another neck-and-neck game. Each opportunity Polk had to take the lead was quickly extinguished and the score tied up again. However, Polk never let the Cougars loose with any significant lead and was able to finish game three with another victory, 25 to 21. Coach Heather Claussen said she

was pleased to see the ladies win. “A 3-0 victory is a great win for us but we need to focus on being more consistent with our play. We tend to lose a little of fierceness somewhere between the first and the last game. If we can overcome the inconsistencies we’ll go far – very far – this season,” Claussen said.

Landrum volleyball dominates Powdersville to win 3-0 by Joey Millwood

Landrum had no problem with Powdersville on Tuesday night, Sept. 11. The Cardinal volleyball team dominated en route to a 3-0 (2510, 25-15, 25-5) victory. After letting the Patriots breathe a little in the second game, the Cardinals weren’t going to let it happen in the third. Aubree Denton, who had

three aces, served up ten straight points to help Landrum jump out to a 14-2 lead. Taylor Jenkins had three of her four kills in the run and Carla Bruce had two of her six kills. “We brought it back (in the third game),” Bruce said. “Our momentum carried us into the third game.” Meagan Painter served out the game with two aces for a

25-5 third game victory. Landrum has not had an abundance of power in recent seasons, but this season it abounds. The Cardinals have multiple hitters who can land thundering shots on opposing defense, and those hitters were imposing their will on Tuesday night. Bruce and Holly Rickett led the way with six kills each.

Jenkins and Painter had four kills each. The Cardinals dispensed with the Patriots early with a speedy 25-10 victory in the first game. The Patriots showed a little fight in the second game. The Cardinals jumped out to a 22-11 lead, but Powdersville wouldn’t go away. (Continued on page 15)

Patriot Kendall Merritt served up three straight points to pull within seven points at 22-15. The Cardinals, however, took control off a big hit by Mallory Shinault and then Denton closed out the final two points on serve. Denton also led the team with 21 assists. “We have good competitiveness and the aggressiveness we need,” Landrum coach Denise Riske said. “We have a lot more power on the offense now.” The Cardinals (2-3, 2-0) have really found chemistry lately, Riske said. That chemistry came just in time as the heart of the new I-2A schedule is coming up, including a tough matchup with the defending region champions Chesnee on Thursday at 7 p.m. “This past week, the girls have started playing together as a team,” Riske said.

He went on to earn his MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University, attending night school, while beginning his 33-year-long career at SherwinWilliams Paint Company and raising his young family. In 1952, Phil married Betty Slater Cooper. They shared their lives together for 55 years until she passed away in 2007. Phil and Betty lived in Glen Ridge, N.J. They were members of Grace Presbyterian Church in Montclair, N.J., where they both sang in the choir and with the Montclair Community Chorus. In 1971, Phil and his family moved to Brecksville, Ohio. In 1976, the family moved to Frankfort, Ill. Then, in 1986, Phil retired from Sherwin-Williams and he and his wife moved to their home in Tryon. After his wife’s death, Phil moved to The Cascades Verdae in 2008. Regardless of where he called home, Phil was always involved with his church and community. He was a member and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago Heights. He was the president of the Tryon Concert Association for 20 years and an active member of the Tryon Presbyterian

Church, serving as an elder and singing in the choir. Phil was a volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital for many years, where he served as member of the St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees. Phil was also elected into Tryon’s “Second Wind Hall of Fame.” Phil had a passion for traveling the world. As he always liked to say with a chuckle, “I’ve been to all seven continents. I’ve sailed in all of the seven seas. I’ve been to every state in the United States of America, except one. So, I guess I’ve done it all, but North Dakota!” He also had a lifelong love for classical music, camping, sharing good food and fellowship with family and friends, and, of course, his many faithful dogs. Survivors include his son, Philip Kent Cooper of Louisville, Ky., and his daughters, Carolyn Cooper Elsey of Landrum and Laura Cooper Hoekstra of Greenville, S.C. Phil had four grandchildren: Philip Blake Cooper, Shaun Morgan Cooper, Taylor Lee Elsey and David Martin Hoekstra. He is also survived by his two brothers: Robert Jay Cooper of Haworth, N.J., and Spencer David Phraner, of Cummings, Ga. and Wurtsboro, N.Y. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at the Tryon Presbyterian Church, with a reception to follow the service. A celebration of his life will also be held at The Cascades Verdae at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Interim HealthCare Hospice, 16 Hyland Road, Greenville, S.C. 29615 or Tryon Presbyterian Church, 430 Harmon Field Road, Tryon, N.C. 28782. On-line condolences may be sent to www.mcfarlandfuneralchapel.com. McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon.

Colden O’Dell was recently selected as St. Luke’s Hospital’s Employee of the Second Quarter for 2012. He has worked at St. Luke’s Hospital for six years in several capacities, including rehabilitation tech, registered nurse on the medical/surgical unit and now as the clinical change officer, where he serves as the liaison between the electronic world and clinical work flow processes. “He has gone above and beyond the expectations of the role as team leader for the Paragon project and took on multiple roles of the clinical change officer and project manager,” said Sandy Brooks, chief nursing officer at St. Luke’s Hospital. “Colden created a very cohesive group working toward a common goal and executed it beautifully.” That common goal was getting St. Luke’s Hospital up and running with the new electronic Health Information System (HIS). St. Luke’s Hospital recently transitioned to the new McKesson Paragon health information system after 80-plus years of writing, deciphering and transcribing physician orders, test results, medications and diet orders. TCA to end 2012-13 season with pianist Weiss

REAL ESTATE

www.tryonfoothillsrealty.com

He performs as a recitalist, a chamber musician and a duo-pianist. Weiss plays duo piano with such eminent artists as Emanuel Ax and Anna Polonsky, his wife. You may remember Anna Polonsky, who performed with clarinetist Jose Franch-Ballester in a concert at the Tryon Fine Arts Center in February 2011. Weiss’s awards, among others, include an Avery Fisher Career Grant, a Gina Bachauer Scholarship and the Meiczyslaw Munz Scholarship. He has recorded the complete Gershwin works for piano and orchestra with JoAnn Falletta

and the Buffalo Philharmonic. Of this performance Falletta wrote “… he [Weiss] brought his own take on Gershwin as a very young person — the kind of swagger of it. But he added a sort of elegance and classical balance that made us think about the music in a different way.” The concert series is by subscription. For information call Dorothy Wyckoff at 828-859-6065 or write Tryon Concert Association, P.O. Box 32, Tryon, NC 28782. For information about the entire season visit www.TryonConcerts.com.

Tryon Painters and Sculptors to feature Lingg at Art, Wine and Cheese program Sept. 25 Tryon Painters and Sculptors will host an Art, Wine and Cheese program featuring Susan Lingg, a renowned watercolor and landscape artist, on Tuesday, Sept. 25 from 4-6 p.m. Lingg’s art celebrates the color of nature with original paintings and images of the landscapes and native flora of the Great Smoky Mountains. Since the 90s, Lingg has been exploring the process and creation of the more dimensional properties of

handmade paper. Created in her studio, handmade paper is often incorporated into many original fine art pieces. Many of her pieces are created with a base of watercolor or acrylic medium, collaged with handmade paper, poured inks, and/or pastels. Lingg has been exhibiting her work through art fairs, festivals, libraries, universities, government buildings, and galleries since 1982. She also teaches watercolor and hand-

made paper through various institutions as well as privately. Everyone is welcome. The Tryon Painters and Sculptors gallery is located at 26 Maple Street in Tryon. For more information, call 828-859-0141 or visit www. tryonpaintersandsculptors.com. Cover up…

The Tryon Concert Association will end the 2012-2013 season on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Tryon Fine Arts Center, with the highly acclaimed pianist Orion Weiss. Born in 1981, Weiss developed a great love for playing piano as a child (he says it was an excuse for not studying math) and he became a student at the PreCollege Program of the Cleveland Institute of Music. He then entered Juilliard where, at age 17, he performed Liszt’s Piano Concerto no. 1 with the Cleveland Orchestra. In March of 1999, with less than 24 hours’ notice, Weiss replaced Andre Watts for a performance of Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Since obtaining his bachelor of music degree at Juilliard in 2004, where he studied with Emanuel Ax, Weiss has had a whirlwind career, performing with numerous major orchestras in the United States and Canada as well as renowned orchestras in Europe and the far east.
