The Unchained Tour’s ‘72 Bluebird school bus arrived in Tryon on Sunday, Sept. 16, bringing world-celebrated storytellers for a performance at Sunnydale. Among the performers were Neil Gaiman, Edgar Oliver and Peter Aguero. The Unchained Tour is the brainchild of novelist George Dawes Green. In 1997, Green founded the Moth, a series of storytelling nights in New York City. The new “Moth on the Radio” program on NPR reaches more than 200 radio stations and is the recipient of a 2010 Peabody Award. The Unchained Tour is inspired by the Moth but not affiliated with the program other than by the shared founder and celebration of storytelling. The tour’s mission is to celebrate independent bookstores and to spread the message that storytelling should be the heart, the vital center, of every community. (photo by David Widdicombe)

The club kicks off its fall season at Isothermal Community College in Columbus at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18. Everyone interested in photography is welcome. • Landrum budget (continued from page 1)

Hospitality tax funds are also expected to increase next year for Landrum. This year’s budget included an estimated $145,000 in hospitality tax revenue and the city expects to receive $150,000 next year. Landrum plans to spend $40,000 of hospitality taxes next year for items including publicity and beautification and another $46,054 in hospitality tax revenue for the depot general obligation bond. During the public hearing Bob Walker was the only speaker, and he asked that Landrum post its current and new budget on the city’s website. Walker also asked what the city currently has in savings. City administrator Steve Wolochowicz said the city has two savings accounts, one that contains revenue from the selling of the city’s water system that has not been spent. He said

the total in the city’s savings accounts, excluding the hospitality tax, was well over $1 million the last time he checked. Walker suggested Landrum, with $1 million in reserves, should give tax breaks to residents. “You should make sure the taxpayer experiences some [benefits] from what’s going on,” Walker said. He also suggested the city absorb some costs, such as garbage fees, as some other areas do. Landrum’s new budget is 1.5 percent higher than the current year budget, with $1,576,539 anticipated in total revenues. Of the total, $120,000 is estimated in revenues for the fire department. The total fire department budget is $205,701, including $85,701 transferred from the city’s general fund for salaries and operations. Landrum’s millage rate will remain at 73.9.

Landrum gets first win of season against Carolina, 28-18 by Joey Millwood

Landrum has been on the edge of getting that first victory for weeks now. The Cardinals have been competitive in their last three games and have been in position to win. That first win for the Cardinals came on Friday night, Sept. 14, on the road against Carolina, 28-18. It also came under circumstances that might have caused a lot of teams to lose. The Cardinals played the game without starting quarterback Aaron Bryant. T.J. Fincher, however, was ready for the challenge. The senior ran for two touchdowns and connected with Peyton McCarter for two more touchdowns to lead the Cardinals to victory.

Fincher was the starting quarterback in Landrum’s 28-18 win over Carolina on Friday night, Sept. 14. He ran for two touchdowns and connected with Peyton McCarter for two more. Polk comeback falls short as Wolverines lose 28-21 to Madison by Fulton Hampton

The first conference game of the season for Polk County High School did not start out pretty. The first two possessions by each team resulted in turnovers. The first quarter ended 0 - 0 as the teams exchanged field position and the ball. Finally, late in the second quarter Madison produced a scoring drive. The team combined a 20-yard run, a 15-yard pass and a 35-yard pass from Tyler Rogers down to the 10-yard line. Madison eventually scored on a 15-yard pass, making the score 7 - 0 with 4.9 seconds left in the half. Polk’s second half started out much more positively. Madison received the second half kickoff but had a quick “three and out,” punting to Polk. Taking possession of the ball at their own 42-yard line, the Wolverines were unable to move the ball and on fourth and four they went into their “special” formation. (Continued on page 11)

• Polk comeback (continued from page 10)

(A center, quarterback, running back and wide receiver are in the middle of the field and the remainder of the team is near the sideline.) A staple for the Wolverines during Ollis’ tenure, it once again paid big dividends. Philpott avoided two defenders and ran the ball down to the 6 yard line. After a penalty on Madison, Tyler Jackson took it in over the right side of the line. Gage Stone added the extra point and the game was tied 7 – 7. Madison returned the kickoff to their 38 yard line and put together a drive, finally scoring on an 11-yard run. The extra point made it 14 - 7 Madison with 6:59 in the third quarter. Polk was unable to move the ball after the kickoff and punted back to the Patriots. With good field position past mid-field and two long runs Madison scored again with 2:57 left in the third quarter. With the score 21-7, Polk’s chances seemed to be fading. However, on third down, Philpott, on the run and being hit as he released the ball, hit Jamal Tanner in full stride. Tanner made a spectacular one-handed

grab for a 74-yard touchdown. With 0:56 left in the third quarter, Polk narrowed the lead to 21-14 and appeared to be reenergized. Just minutes later, Madison answered with a long drive capped by a 3-yard plunge by Deryck Hilemon. Polk scored again with 5:32 to go to make it 28-21. Philpott executed an onside kick recovered by Polk. But Madison’s defense held as Polk turned the ball over on downs with 2:15 to go. Ollis said after the game, “(We) lost to a good football team. I told our players we have to play like we’re capable of winning all the time. We did not really start playing hard until it looked like we had a chance to win the game. We’ve got to work on being more emotional and being focused and giving ourselves the opportunity to make plays. We had a chance on the last play but we overthrew the receiver open in the end zone. The difference between this game and last game was that when the game was on the line, we did not quite make enough plays.” The Wolverines (3-2, 0-1) return on Friday, Sept. 21 at home to face Mountain Heritage in another conference game.
