Columbus officials: Downtown area has enough parking spaces for business needs Town responds to letter to editor by Leah Justice

Columbus Mayor Eric McIntyre said there are enough parking spaces downtown to accommodate businesses. The

problem, he said, is how the spaces are being utilized. Columbus Town Council met Thursday, Sept. 20 and discussed parking and other issues related to two private businesses downtown. The discussion was in response to a letter to the edi-

tor submitted by Elton Cochran, which said it seems that Columbus tables every issue (see page 9 in the Aug. 22 Bulletin). Cochran’s letter said some tabled items include parking on (Continued on page 4)

the east end of town, the new Republican Party building fence and “private parking lot” and the new two-hour parking ordinance that is not being enforced. McIntyre said the Republican Party building is a matter between two private parties and the town decided it was not going to get involved in the matter. “This has all been discussed and settled, so I don’t know where this is coming from,” said councilwoman Margaret Metcalf. Through research, town manager Jonathan Kanipe determined that town council has discussed the private party matter 11 times since February 2011. “That’s 60 percent of the meetings we have had,” McIntyre said. Metcalf said on the parking issue the town has given solutions to the problems by asking employees to park in spaces other than in front of businesses. “There’s only so much we can do,” said Metcalf. The town has heard requests in the past to purchase land for a public parking lot to serve downtown businesses, particularly on the block that includes Copper Mill, the Brick, Calvert’s and the Second Chance Thrift Store, among other businesses. Brown said, “If I train your horse, he learns to respect me which does nothing to change his perception of you. Your horse alone now possesses the new knowledge which will only translate temporarily into new behaviors. However, when I empower you with the knowledge to communicate like a leader with your horse, he will also learn to willingly honor your ideas and respect your leadership. have said there are almost always empty parking spaces in front of Stearns and along other blocks downtown and there are no available lots closer than those spaces for the town to purchase. Columbus Police Chief Chris Beddingfield also said his officers have done parking studies recently and determined there are almost always open spaces at any time of the day downtown. Those open spaces just may not be in front of the block that includes the Brick, he said. On only one occasion during the study were there were no parking spaces open, Beddingfield said. For the last five to six weeks, Beddingfield also said a part-time officer has gone into each business to alert them he was doing parking enforcement and employees whose vehicles were in violation moved them with no problems. “In my opinion that’s not, not doing anything,” Beddingfield said. “We’re going above and beyond. We are addressing the problem the best way we can address it.” Beddingfield also said the town has offered legal, town and law enforcement advice on the private property matter between the Republican headquarters and the Brick concerning access to the rear of the property. He said the town cannot police on private property and the town cannot make decisions regarding private property.

Hise mailer extremely misleading To the editor: Like many of your readers, I have been inundated with mail from the state Republican Party touting state senator Ralph Hise and his record in this extreme and reckless General Assembly. Some are filled with claims that are at best misleading and at worst outright fabrications. Mr. Hise claims that he “cut taxes for all North Carolinians.” The truth is that Republicans promised not to raise taxes, but then turned

to the rich. The budget Hise voted for puts North Carolina at 45th out of 50 states in per-student spending. It made the largest cuts ever in the history of our community college and university systems. Hise also sponsored deep cuts in programs that support job creation and economic growth in rural North Carolina. He even sponsored a bill to take away already-awarded Golden Leaf Foundation grants for vital projects in counties he represents. In his most egregious claim, Hise says, “He voted to add over 2,000 state-funded teachers to our classrooms.” No matter how you look at it, the budget did not add teachers to North Carolina’s schools – it forced school districts

across the state to fire teachers. According to the Department of Public Instruction, the budget Hise voted for led to the firing of 915 teachers and 2,042 teaching assistants. Next year, North Carolina stands to lose thousands more educators unless we do something. We need to reject Hise and the rest of this extreme legislature. I’m voting for Hise’s challenger, Phil Feagan, because he supports education and local job creation. Feagan would also be the first member of the General Assembly from Polk County since 1966. It’s way past time for our community to get some representation. I urge everyone to find out more at www.philfeagan.com. – Mary Parker, Tryon

Wolverines get swagger back, beat Cougars 41-20 Jackson scores three, Darden two, Carson intercepts two by Fulton Hampton

Polk County got back to its winning ways Friday night against the Cougars of Mountain Heritage and evened its conference record at 1-1. In a game that was closer than the final score of 41-20 would indicate, the Wolverines showed several areas of improvements. They solidified their running game with 37 carries for 352 yards, and the defensive secondary played well, particularly in critical situations. Mountain Heritage scored on its first possession, highlighted by a 65-yard run on the team’s first play from scrimmage. Scoring on a 10-yard pass with 10:12 left in the quarter, the Cougars set the tone for the game and led 7-0. Polk responded, scoring on its first possession with a 32-yard pass to Anthony Carson and a 30-yard run by Matt Darden, which tied the score at 7–7 at the 7:52 mark

of the game. The Cougars were unable to move the ball on the next possession and Polk took over. On a Polk fourth down, the Cougars’ Jake McClellan intercepted a screen pass by Polk’s Alec Philpott and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown. After a missed extra point, the Cougars led 13 to 7. Early in the second quarter, the Cougars intercepted another pass and returned for positive yardage, but Polk took over on downs. On this key possession, a 17-yard pass to J.C. Suddeth took them to mid-field. Philpott then went on a 56-yard scamper for the score. Gage Stone once again tacked on the extra point and the Wolverines went up 14-13. Later in the quarter Polk recovered a fumble on the Cougars’ 40, eventually resulting in a 5-yard touchdown by Tyler Jackson. Polk took a 21-13 lead with 1:57 to go in the half. Landrum’s ‘tale of two halves’ ends with win vs. Liberty by Joey Millwood

On Friday night, Sept. 21, it was the definitive tale of two halves for the Landrum football team. In the first half, Murphy’s Law plagued Landrum on both sides of the ball, but in the second half it all came together in a 33-29 victory. The Cardinal offense and defense dominated in the second half as Landrum remained undefeated in Region I-2A play. The Cardinals were down 22-7 at the half, but roared back. In the first half, the Cardinal offense sputtered, which put the defense back on its heels. Liberty led 22-7 at the half, but it was the Car-

The Cardinals’ offensive line played well in the second half, too. “We have the playmakers that make plays,” center Matt Pace said. “We just have to give them the time.” The defense held on the next drive and the Cardinals’ offense struck quickly. Fincher dropped back and tossed a 38-yard touch(Continued on page 11)

down to Parsons, who was wide open down the left side on the first play from scrimmage. Down 29-26, it was up to the Landrum defense again. The Red Devils put together a nine-play drive, but the Cardinals defense fended off any momentum. Three plays into Landrum’s next drive, Fincher connected with Peyton McCarter for a 44-yard pass that took the Cardinals to the oneyard line. Two plays later, Fincher grabbed a high snap and rolled left for what would end up being the game-winning touchdown. With 1:49 left in the fourth quarter, Red Devil quarterback Brandon

field, but Carson ended that threat, intercepting a pass in the back of the end zone. The half-time score was Polk 21 Mountain Heritage 13. Taking the second-half kickoff, Polk turned the ball over on downs. However, Philpott then intercepted a pass, which Polk capitalized on as Jackson scored his second time of

Alexander led his team down the field on a ten-play drive that ended with two batted-down passes in the endzone. Defensive lineman Derek Brittain summed up the Cardinals’ final stand afterwards. “It felt amazing,” Brittain said. “That’s the only [way] to describe it.” Landrum coach Russell Mahaffey said he was thrilled at what his offense and defense did, but particularly what his defense did in the second half after being back on its heels in the first half. “My hat’s off to the defense in the second half,” Mahaffey said. “When we had to stop them, we stopped them.”

the night on a 2-yard plunge. This drive consisted primarily of a long run by Jackson and two receptions by Carson. The extra point was blocked, making the score 27-13 with 3:24 left in the third quarter. The Cougars came back immediately, with Trevor Robinson scoring on an 8-yard quarterback keeper. Polk’s lead narrowed to 27–20. Polk’s next drive was aided by timely runs by Philpott and

topped off with a 30-yard run by Darden. Once Darden turned the corner at the 20-yard line he outran the Cougar secondary to make the score 34-20 Polk. Mountain Heritage took the ball down field to the Polk 18, and on a fourth and 4, Philpott batted down a pass to take over on downs. Taking full advantage, Jackson took the ball 82 yards for his third score of the night. Jackson was untouched

thanks to two perfectly executed blocks by Suddeth and Smith, resulting in the final score of 4120. Carson intercepted his second pass in the end zone to end a late Heritage drive. Polk is now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference. The Wolverines travel to Mitchell this Friday, Sept. 28, as their conference schedule continues.

gree from Columbia University. She joined the WAAC in January 1943. In August 1943 WAAC became WAC. After VJ Day she was sent to China and worked for three months in Shanghai. Then she was promoted to tech sergeant and sent to Beijing, where she became a master sergeant as chief clerk in the office of the chief of staff. The work of the three power teams working for agreement between the Nationalists and Communists proved

futile and the WAC personnel were ordered out of there by General Marshall. In March 1947, they were taken under air cover to the ice cutter that took them to the ship to come home. By coincidence, the man she was destined to marry was also working in Shanghai during the period she was in China. In 1947, she mustered out of the army and was employed by the Central Intelligence Agency and assigned to Vienna, Austria

where she met Dawson. She later had tours of duty in Berlin and Munich. On March 4, 1961, she and Dawson were married in Nocona, Texas. Surviving is her husband of 51 happy years, Dawson W. Chiles of the home. At Geraldine’s request, there will be no service. An online guest register is available at www.mcfarlandfuneralchapel.com. McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon.

Tryon Fine Arts Center will offer an oil painting class with artist Margaret Curtis for teenaged students on Saturdays starting Oct. 6. The class will meet in Studio B at TFAC from noon – 3 p.m. This is a foundational college level art class in painting with oils and is offered to motivated middle school and high school students. The focus will be on individual development of student skills, initially using primary colors and learning mixing techniques. Projects will start with still life and as the teacher becomes familiar with students’ strengths, the course will expand to take in various subjects such as (clothed) figure painting. The course will be offered in three nine-week trimesters throughout the academic year with each trimester being a stand-alone course. The first trimester will begin Oct. 6 and run through Dec. 8. Curtis has many years of experience throughout the country as an artist, instructor and curator. Some of her teaching experience was in New York City with adults at the School of Visual Arts as well as underprivileged children at The Studio in a School. She also had solo exhibitions in many galleries in the northeast and has been part of group exhibitions nationwide. Curtis has lectured at SUNY, Washington University

Two gently used quilts from the 1930s are available for bidding at the Tryon Congregational Church silent auction, which closes Sunday, Sept. 30 at noon. Both quilts are white, summer weight and quilted with fine hand stitches. Some of the appliqued patterns are examples of how different-colored dyes survive the years. The blues are still vibrant. One quilt appears to have been imprinted with a bluebird/ flower pattern that the quilter embroidered and pieced over. The one shown here has a big blue bow and flowers. The church, located at 210 Melrose Ave., is open Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. - noon and 1-3 p.m. Stop in the church office and you will be directed to the quilts. Call 828-859-9414 for more information. All proceeds will go to community causes. (article written by Donna Southworth, submitted by harvest sale publicity)
