Polk creates new economic development website

Anyone wanting statistical, economic, business, housing or pretty much any other data about Polk County now has a resource online. The Polk County Economic and Tourism Development Commission (ETDC) launched a new website last week for economic development.

The website, which can be found at www.polkedc.com, was reviewed during a meeting of the ETDC on Wednesday, Sept. 26.

“I’m really, really excited about this because it has everything a business would want to know,” said Polk County Economic Development Director Libbie Johnson.

The site has approximately 65 pages of content, including a downloadable fact book about (Continued on page 4)

The Polk County Board of Commissioners will hold a Unified Development Ordinance Workshop on Monday, Oct. 1 at 5 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room of the Womack Building in Columbus.

The county’s regular meeting will follow at 7 p.m.

Tryon plans Tap into Tryon, area’s first beer fest, Nov. 10 Tryon is planning the area’s firstever beer fest, called Tap into Tryon, which will be held in the Tryon Depot Plaza. The event is planned for Nov. 10, 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.

An array of ‘craft’ beers will be chilled, ready for sampling. Full servings of beer will be available for sale

along with authentic German food and large soft pretzels. Non-alcoholic beverages and water will be available. Live Bavarian music will be played most of the day.

Fourth annual Columbus Farm Festival set for Oct. 6 The community will have another opportunity to celebrate Polk County’s agriculture heritage on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., when the Town of Columbus will host its fourth annual Columbus Farm Festival. The festival will be held on Mills Street, Stearns Park and in and around Courthouse Square.

The event will be held rain or shine.

The downtown area will be closed to vehicles but open to pedestrians who can enjoy displays of farm animals, such as draft horses, goats and chickens, as well as other farm products and equipment. Festival-goers can also watch craftsmen make handcrafted items and take part in a variety of other activities.

An extended tailgate market Saturday will offer produce and other products. There will also be a hayride and corn hole games sponsored by the Polk County FFA. The Columbus Farm Festival is sponsored by the Polk County Agricture Development Office, Town of Columbus and the Polk County Cooperative Extension Center.

Polk sheriff’s office weekly report During the week of Sept. 19 through Sept. 26, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office answered 331 service calls.

Officers made four arrests, including one for injury to personal property, one for breaking and entering, one for communicating threats and one for motor vehicle theft.

Officers issued 25 citations, including 11 for speeding, three for expired registration, three

for operating a vehicle with no operator’s license, two for open container in passenger area of motor vehicle, five for infractions and one for an inspection violation.

Officers also served 11 civil papers and conducted 444 church checks, 630 business checks and 116 residential checks. Officers traveled 6,876 miles.

Be wary of manipulative intimidators To the editor, Bravo, Polk County!

You thronged to the UDO meeting Monday night [Sept.

17], armed with Bibles and selfrighteous anger to show your might. Invited to learn about UDO, to ask questions and to become truly informed, you tried instead to cow our elected officials who had the gall to think they could infringe on

your sacred freedoms. These officials who would trespass with impunity (or so you were told) on your land, in your homes. And these same commissioners, two of whom are females – what do they know?

How dare they! You showed them, all right!

By acting like a mob, truly having the mentality of a bully (“tarred and feathered?) instead of a concerned group of citizens asking for clarification of the UDO, you played right into the hands of spineless cowards, backroom shady politicians, who vilified these commissioners weekly with unsigned car-

toons; and those cowards could care less about Polk County’s future.

Had you listened, you would have remembered that these commissioners did not create UDO a few weeks ago out of thin air, nor ignored your input. They are following a plan, part of the 20/20, put in place “by the people, for the people” years ago with visions of a vibrant future for Polk County. Yes, the wording of UDO needs tweaking, but it does not warrant “throwing the baby out with the bathwater.”

Thank heavens you elected these commissioners, particu-

larly these two courageous, strong women. They are honest, informed and hard-working on your behalf. They have tirelessly tried to put in place a plan to indeed safeguard your heritage: these beautiful hills and unique communities.

They are doing it, not for personal advantages or political clout, but for the same reasons you hope to protect this county: for a deep love of this amazing bit of heaven on earth.

So,please work together with your elected commissioners and be wary of manipulative intimidators.

Landrum to rebid depot renovations Landrum City Council agreed on Sept. 11 to rebid renovations to the city’s depot. The city has gone through the budget and found cost savings, including going with gas heat instead of heat pumps as well as plumbing and light fixture savings. City council had considered going with a unisex bathroom but decided to leave two separate facilities. The bid requests will go out to four contractors.

Landrum to change city auditors During a meeting held Sept. 11, Landrum City Council approved a contract with The Hobbs Group of Columbia, S.C. to conduct the city’s next audit. The low bid came in at approximately $9,500. Cities are required to change auditors every three to four years.

Landrum hires IT provider The City of Landrum has decided to hire an outside IT provider to do computer work for both the city and the police department. Landrum City Council met Sept.

11 and approved hiring Rising Technologies of Boiling Springs, S.C. for $9,000 a year.

Tryon approves Crowell as TDDA chair During a meeting held Sept. 18, Tryon Town Council approved appointed Bill Crowell as the chair of the Tryon Tourism Development Authority.

Tryon to purchase compactor The Town of Tryon is purchasing a compactor from Jon & Jay’s for $3,200. Tryon Town Council approved a contract for the compactor, which can compact recycling. City officials said the town can pay off the compactor in nine months if it compacts only paper and cardboard and pay it off in five months if the town compacts cans as well.

The compactor will be placed at the town’s wastewater treatment plant. It will cost $300 to move it.

Tryon appoints two to ABC board Tryon Town Council on Sept. 18 appointed Dennis Durham and Deborah Isabel to the Tryon ABC board. The town has had difficulty filling positions on its ABC board; with the two new appointments the board will be complete.

Columbus considers allowing use of Veteran’s Park The Town of Columbus is drafting a form for organizations to use Veteran’s Park for events. The town has had several requests for public use, but formerly had no policy on use of the park. Town council met Sept. 20 and agreed for staff to draft a form for the park’s use.

Council members said they want to give veteran-affiliated organizations first priority. Stipulations for what will be allowed at the park and what will be restricted will be included in the form, which council will consider during its October meeting.

Local artist Carson to give plein air workshop Oct. 25 - 27 Call 828-859-9151 “Café in Troyes France,” by Saluda artist Jim Carson, is one of the paintings inspired by Carson’s recent three-week plein air painting trip to Paris and the surrounding countryside. Carson will give a plein air (outdoor) workshop in Saluda, Thursday –Saturday, Oct. 25-27. The workshop will focus on simplifying the landscape, values and the use of bold and spontaneous brushwork. It is open to all levels, from beginners to advanced.

He is an experienced and nationally known plein air painter, having been juried into some of the most prestigious plein air festivals in the United States, including Door County, Wisc., Easton, Md. and Richmond, Va. A number of Pinecastle Records artists performed at World of Bluegrass, held Sept. 24-28 in Nashville. The artists included I Draw Slow, Karl Shiflett, Niall Toner, Nu-Blu, Robert Hale and Town Mountain.

The World of Bluegrass, organized by the International Bluegrass Musicians Association, is held annually to celebrate bluegrass music and honor the industry’s top musicians.

Pinecastle Records, located in Columbus, was created nearly 22 years ago and now has almost 250 releases in its catalog, including titles from some of the most influential musicians in the bluegrass genre such as Eddie Adcock, The Osborne Brothers, Jim and Jesse, and Charlie Waller & The Country Gentlemen. Pinecastle is owned by businessman and medical doctor Lonnie Lassiter.

Nelson to teach landscape painting workshop Oct. 22-28 Richard Christian Nelson (Rich Nelson) will teach a five-day autumn landscape painting workshop in Tryon Oct. 22-28. The class will meet at Skyuka Fine Art gallery and paint outdoors in the area from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day.

Artists will work from life to grasp the fundamentals fundamentals of painting the landscape. This is open to all media, but oils will be emphasized. According to Nelson, “We will paint the beautiful N.C. foothills for five days, just as the greens are fading to red and gold.”

The artists will concentrate on painting outdoors. There will be lectures and demos by Nelson, and group “critiques” (mostly just putting the work up and having each artist say “how it’s going”). If it is raining, the class will stay indoors and decide whether to work on still life or hire a model.

Nelson is an accomplished portrait and gallery artist who lives in Tryon. He earned his BFA from the College of Creative Studies (CCS) in Detroit, Mich. in 1988. Nelson taught anatomy, figure drawing and painting at CCS part-time after graduating. He has been working ever since as a portrait artist, gallery artist and instructor. He and his wife, Kim, opened Skyuka Fine Art in 2010 www.SkyukaFineArt. Com. This workshop is open to all levels and all media, but oil will be emphasized. Class size is limited to 12. White Oak Village raises $1,200 for Thermal Belt Outreach Dolores Zeese, Thermal Belt Outreach volunteer and resident of White Oak Village Retirement Community in Tryon, recently challenged other White Oak Village residents to dig deep for the needy families of Polk County, especially the children. John Barber, executive vice-president and CFO of White Oak Management, picked up her challenge and the company pledged matching funds for all funds raised by White Oak Village Retirement Community.

Residents gave a total of $1,200, some of which was designated for the Feed-A-Kid Weekend Back Program, and White Oak Management matched those funds for a total gift of $2,400.

Carol Newton, Thermal Belt Outreach director said, “We are extremely grateful for the support of White Oak residents and management. It truly makes a difference.”

On a sad note, Zeese passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 25. White Oak Village residents said she was

PAC hike goes to the Saluda Mountains Passage Oct. 5 Join the Pacolet Area Conservancy (PAC) on Friday, Oct. 5 for a 6.5-mile, moderate/strenuous hike on the newly completed Saluda Mountains Passage of the Palmetto Trail, the second hike of PAC’s fall hiking series. PAC Land Protection Specialist Pam Torlina will lead the out and back hike. Hikers will start at the Talisman Camp trailhead and ascend approximately 565 feet over the course of approximately 3¼ miles to the highest point along this section of the trail. Then, hikers will turn around and enjoy the descent back to Talisman Camp trailhead.

The Saluda Mountains Passage is the newest section of the eventual 425-mile Palmetto Trail, a recreational trail that traverses the state of South Carolina (and a portion of North Carolina). When completed, the trail will consist of several connecting passages from Oconee State Park in the mountains of South Carolina to just north of Charleston on the coast, connecting the mountains to the sea and showcasing the unique history, culture and geography of the Palmetto State.

The Saluda Mountains passage skirts the northern edge of the 19,000-acre Greenville Watershed, dipping in and out of North and South Carolina, as well as the watershed property. In order to protect Greenville’s water supply, the watershed property has been closed to visitors for nearly 70 years, and the Saluda Mountains Passage allows people the unique opportunity to see a portion of this pristine property.

Hikers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear; bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water. Be sure to bring any personal medication that you may require. Hikers should be prepared to return to the area by 3 p.m. at the latest. In case of inclement weather, please contact the PAC office by 8:15 a.m. on the day of the hike to see if the hike will take place.
