Jackson named LHS homecoming queen
In the second of three free Road Scholar lectures, Tryon Fine Arts Center will host Dr. Anne Rogers as she presents “Native Americans and Their Use of the Environment” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7. Rogers is an anthropologist specializing in archaeology and Native American studies. The lectures are provided by the North Carolina Humanities Council.

Landrum’s Senior Wednesdays begin tomorrow 41 businesses offering discounts by Leah Justice
People age 55 and older can take advantage of discounts in Landrum starting tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 3. The Landrum Area Business Association (LABA) recruited
41 businesses recently to offer discounts on Wednesdays and has advertised the campaign in publications. Landrum City Council met Sept. 11 and approved a proclamation declaring Wednesdays as senior days in Landrum. The discounts for seniors range from 10 to 25 percent off
on sales and services. LABA President Melanie Jennings said the LABA voted for the discounts to be offered to people age 55 and older in order to include a larger range of people. “We got the businesses to(Continued on page 4)

Laval returns to Tryon Fine Arts Center, Lanier Library Back by popular demand, Celtic musician Jamie Laval will perform with his ensemble at the Tryon Fine Arts Center on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. A reception at the Lanier Library will follow the performance. Laval, a master Scottish fiddler who has received numerous awards for his recordings and performs throughout the United States and Canada, gave two shows at the Lanier Library last year to an audience organizers described as wildly enthusiastic, many of whom were willing to stand throughout the show. After losing the last two games with Mitchell 28-27, any score other than that might have been welcomed. Coach Bruce Ollis said, “That 28-27 score has been imprinted on my brain for the last two years.” Winning on the Mountaineer’s home field 36-20 on Friday, Sept. 28 was particularly satisfying, Ollis said. “Coming into Ledger and winning is a big deal!” said Ollis. Known as a hard place to play, Mitchell’s stadium is a long drive from Polk followed by a long uphill walk to a field that is not in good shape, and the visiting bleachers are the old hard concrete type far from the field. Quarterback Alec Philpott said, “It’s nice beating Mitchell finally up
here; I don’t exactly like this place.” Mitchell received the opening kickoff but was unable to move the ball and punted. Polk put together a drive on the running of Tyler Jackson and Matt Darden. Philpott took the ball over from short yardage for the first score of the night. The extra point by Gage Stone was wide left, making the score Polk 6-0. Mitchell took the kickoff moving steadily down field and scored with 11:54 left in the second quarter. Mitchell converted its two-point attempt and led 8-6. The Wolverines then scored again, with Darden taking it in with 9:50 left in the second quarter. The two-point conversion pass to JC Suddeth made it 14-8 Polk. On the next series, Mitchell was unable to move the ball and had a bad snap go through the punter’s
hands, giving Polk the ball on the 11 yard line. Philpott scored on the next play to make the score 22-8 with 6:56 left in the half. The Wolverines had what seemed to be a comfortable lead. However, Polk was unable to stop the Mountaineers, who finally scored on a 15-yard pass play. The two-point conversion attempt was stopped, leaving the score 22-14 Polk at halftime. On their first drive of the second half, the Wolverines fumbled, giving Mitchell excellent field position. The Mountaineers took full advantage and scored, making it 22-20. Mitchell went for two points for the tie. However, Lucas Williams (18 tackles for the game) made an outstanding play, fighting off two blockers to make the final hit to stop the runner. The score remained 22-20 at the end of the
third quarter. Polk responded with a long drive, a key play being a fourthdown 7-yard completion to Reese Schlabach that kept the drive alive. Later, on a fourth and goal, Philpott scored to take a 29-20 lead with 4:27 left in the game. As the Mountaineers were driving, Philpott intercepted a pass to end Mitchell’s threat. Intending simply to run out the clock, Polk ran a quarterback sweep that resulted in a 78-yard TD run by Philpott. The extra point made it a misleading 36-20 final score. Mitchell then fumbled on its first play from scrimmage and Polk ran out the clock. Polk, now 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference, takes on conference foe Avery for its homecoming game this Friday, Oct. 5.

The Cardinals had a tough start this season, but Landrum is hitting its stride. The Cardinals have won three consecutive games, and the wins couldn’t have come at a better time. All three games so far have been over Region I-2A opponents. It was homecoming on Friday, Sept. 28, and a player whose new home is Landrum was all over the field in a 29-19 victory over Powdersville. Chris Schulman, a transfer from Tampa, Fla., was all over the place on both sides of the ball. The senior had 40 yards receiving, including a 16-yard touchdown reception. Defensively, Schulman had two interceptions. “It’s just practice,” Schulman said. “It’s doing what I’m taught to do and just making plays.” The Cardinals made enough plays on Friday night in the ugly win over the winless Patriots. In the first quarter, quarterback T.J. Fincher dove in from four yards out for the Cardinals’ first score. That score was set up by a Schulman interception. In the second quarter, Fincher tossed a touch pass towards Schulman in the front corner of the endzone for the second score of the game. With 51.3 seconds left in the first half,
Fincher dropped back and threw a bullet down the right side to Peyton McCarter. The ball hit a Patriot defender and then fell into McCarter’s hands to give the Cardinals a 21-7 lead going into the half. At the start of the second half, two key plays happened to determine the outcome of the game. First, the ball skipped into the back of the endzone on a Patriot bad snap to give the Cardinals two points on a safety. Then on the Cardinals’ next drive, the Patriots recovered a fumble and raced towards the endzone. Schulman ran the defender down and made a touchdown-saving tackle on the one-yard-line. The Cardinal defense forced the Patriots to attempt a field goal that missed wide left. Two possessions later, Fincher punched in another touchdown from two yards out. The game might have been closer than expected, but with Chesnee looming next week, the Cardinals remain undefeated in region play. “They kept coming after it,” Landrum coach Russell Mahaffey said. “We had trouble establishing the run. We’re going to have to work hard on that next week. We’re just going to have to get after it next week.”

Centers for Disease Control officials recommend that everyone older than 6 months of age receive a flu vaccine. Last year’s flu vaccine will not protect you against this year’s flu virus. Last year seemed to be a mild flu season, but there is no way to predict what this year’s flu season will be like. Flu season typically begins in October and reaches its peak December through March. It takes about two weeks for the flu vaccine to provide protection from the flu so it is important to get your vaccine now. Influenza is a respiratory virus that can cause cough, fever, body aches, sore throat, headache, chills and fatigue. The virus is highly contagious from person to person and is spread by droplets coughed into the air. Preventing the spread of flu can be accomplished by getting the flu vaccine, covering your coughs
and sneezes, washing your hands frequently and staying home when you have fever and flu-like symptoms. Complications from flu can lead to death, especially in adults over the age of 65 years or children with diseases that affect the immune system. Polk County Health Department is now providing flu vaccines from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for anyone over 6 months of age. Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance, Medicare Part B and Medicaid will pay for the vaccine at the health department. Uninsured or underinsured children may get the vaccine free at the health department. Polk County Extension Center: Fall is for planting The Polk County Extension Center reminds area residents that now is the time to consider transplanting new trees and shrubs into your home landscape. Many garden centers and nurseries are advertising “Fall is for planting,” and the extension center said that is sound advice. Why try fall planting? Unlike in the north, this area’s most stressful weather for plants is during the summer months. Fall planting is recommended for two main factors. First, the plants are going into dormancy with cooler temperatures and shorter days. This tends to lessen transplant shock on new plantings. Second, while the top growth of plants has stopped, the plant roots will continue to
grow through most of autumn. This in turn will help plants survive the area’s hot and often dry summertime conditions. Plants can be transplanted anytime during the year, but the amount of follow-up care varies depending on the season. The optimal time to set out most new plants is during the month of October. If you have any questions about transplanting new trees and shrubs, the Polk County Master Gardeners are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - noon and Thursday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. at the extension center in Columbus. GAP artists to sell work at Bark in the Park, TACS Fall Festival
Mountain BizWorks will host a five-week marketing course beginning Tuesday, Oct. 16 from 6-9 p.m. at the Carolina Foothills Chamber of Commerce building, located at 2753 Lynn Road (Hwy. 108) in Lynn. Mountain BizWorks classes focus on developing the entrepreneur and their business management skills. In “Marketing for Your Business,” participants will get help in developing a solid, focused marketing plan. The course is facilitated by Carol Lynn Jackson, MBW Business Developer and owner of Manna Cabanna, in Saluda. She brings
many years of local marketing experience, particularly in the areas of food, agriculture and rural enterprises. Carol Lynn Jackson is a local food system advocate who works to bridge the marketing and distribution gaps for WNC food producers. Her business lends administrative support and “social capital” to the producer while educating the community about the power and wealth of a local foods system. The course is designed to help participants discover more about who they are and how that knowledge can help them better market their business,
how knowing customers and building relationships can be the key to success and how to become the trusted expert where your customers return again and again.
