In just three days last week, the House of Flags Museum in Columbus greeted almost 800 visitors anxious to view rare emblems of America’s story – the 48-star,

Removing or vandalizing political signs illegal by Samantha Hurst

With Election Day Nov. 6 closing in, campaign signs dotting the main drags of Polk County often mysteriously disappear or appear with added graffiti, campaign volunteers say. While this might be commonplace, it is also illegal. “People think it’s just in the spirit of competition to yank a sign down or they think if it’s in a public thoroughfare its free game, but that’s not the law,” said Lee Stockdale, a volunteer with the Polk County Democratic Party. Stockdale said they’ve had numerous reports of signs being stolen or vandalized and said he has no doubt it’s happening to Republican campaigns as well.

Vandalizing or stealing a political sign is a class one misdeamoner, according to the magistrate’s office. Class one misdemeanors are punishable by less than a year in prison. A sign for Marche Pittman outside the car wash in Tryon, for example, was vandalized earlier this month when someone placed a fake mustache across his face. Pittman said he’s also had quite a few signs stolen in the last few days alone from Hunting Country road. Stockdale said people need to be respectful of the money campaigns have spent to put these signs out – depending on the quality each one can cost around $5 - and the time volunteers have taken to help distribute signs.

people didn’t realize what they were looking at but as they heard the story it all became real.” Making such an exhibition possible originated with Chuck and Donna Douglas, residents of Polk County, Florida, who own 48-star and 49-star flags. There are only three other 48-star flags in existence. Chuck said visitors from second-graders to 99-year-olds all had questions he felt came from place of wonder. “We didn’t think the school kids would be interested but they came in and were like, ‘Wow, look how cool,’” Chuck said. “They understood they were seeing something no one else had ever seen.” Douglas and his wife, Donna, came into possession of the 48-star and 49-star flags through Donna’s father Ludwell Pruett Jr. Pruett served as a civilian with the Quartermaster Corp, which serves as support to the United States Army. Pruett’s service primarily included providing flags for exhibits at museums such as the Smithsonian and decommissioning flags for the flag mission. When it was time to take the 48-star and 49-star presidential flags out of service, Pruett was given permission to keep them because President Eisenhower had not promised them to anyone else. “He [Pruett] had the forethought to say, ‘This is going to be something special,” said Donna Douglas. Chuck said he’s astonished no one else realized the significance of these flags but happy his father-inlaw did understand. Chuck began last year making phone calls to places like the Smithsonian to put

together an exhibit. He said he was surprised when they were not interested but felt reaching the House of Flags in Columbus was fate. “Many people wanted to buy them and lock them away, but I wasn’t interested in doing so. It had always been my dream to have the 48, 49 and 50-star flags in the same room,” Chuck said. So, when he called Williamson he was happy to find someone else as enthusiastic. Williamson flew to Florida in March of this year to see the flags in the Douglas’ possession. Eventually the two made multiple trips to the Quartermaster Museum at Ft. Lee in Virginia and eventually Williamson traveled to the Eisenhower Library and Museum in Kansas to procure the 50-star flag and complete the display. The 50-star flag, Williamson said, is particularly significant because it is the actual flag unveiled in the White House Cabinet Room when Hawaii became the country’s 50th state in August 1959. The 49-star flag, meanwhile, was also handmade and represented Alaska joining the United States in January 1959. “What the three of us [Chuck and Donna Douglas and himself] have learned about these flags – this has just been a phenomenal educational experience,” Williamson said. The two men plan to write a book about the flags’ historical significance and produce a documentary about the display at the House of Flags Museum. To complete the weekend and honor the House of Flags’ cooperation, Chuck and Donna Douglas presented Williamson and the museum with a 49-star limousine flag used during the Eisenhower administration. so. McDermott and Walker voted no saying the vote in general was against commission rules because the item was added to the agenda that evening. Residents spoke in favor and against rescinding MRPO Oct. 11. Resident Bill Smith urged them to keep MRPO in place. (Continued on page 14)

Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry begins Thanksgiving and Angel Tree Drive Each year Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry (Outreach) supports the needs of families that find it difficult to provide the simple blessing of a holiday meal or a Christmas gift. Many families are struggling to make ends meet and facing unemployment, depressed economic conditions and a rising cost of living. Outreach is focusing once again on raising funds for this special need. Outreach will use contributions designated for the Holiday Fund to provide families with grocery store food cards that can be used to purchase Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. The Holiday Fund also provides Outreach with the opportunity to secure at least one Christmas gift for each eligible child (0-13) or senior citizen (60+). Additionally, Outreach is beginning its Angel Tree Drive. Angel Trees will be adorned with cards that have a

child’s first name, age and gender for those that wish to “adopt” a child for Christmas. Last year, Outreach served more than 400 families representing more than 2,700 individuals through this special holiday program. This year, Outreach anticipates the need to be even greater. “Churches, businesses, community organizations and individuals have adopted children and seniors in previous years. The delight on the gift givers’ faces when they deliver their gifts to Outreach is one of sheer gladness that comes with being Santa’s helpers and being a part of the Angel Tree program. Christmas joy abounds for everyone involved,” explained Carol Newton, Outreach executive director. If you would like to help, send a check to: Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry, PO Box 834, 134 White Dr., Columbus, NC 28722.

Write in holiday fund in the memo section of your check. If you would like to know more about how you can participate in the Angel Tree Program, contact Michelle Reedy at 828-894-2988. Outreach is accepting applications for Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. and 1 – 2:30 p.m. Monday

through Thursday. The last day to apply for Thanksgiving assistance is Oct. 29, for Christmas assistance the deadline is Nov. 15. Proof of Polk County residency; food stamps, Medicaid and/or proof of income for everyone in the home are required. – article submitted by Wendy Thomas

Polk Wolverines dominates Thomas Jefferson 44-21 by Fulton Hampton

Polk came into their game against Thomas Jefferson Friday, Oct. 12 not knowing quite what to expect. Thomas Jefferson had won only one game in the previous three years but was a much improved team with overall record of 6-2. They were also known for passing the ball well and pass defense has not been Polk’s strongest suite this year. But Polk came out strong offensively and by the end of the first quarter the game was never in question, Polk eventually won 44-21. In the post-game interview Head Coach Bruce Ollis was pleased with the early focus of the team. “I was real proud of the way

we played earlier, we kind of asserted ourselves on them early in the ballgame.” Scoring on their first possession, with a 1 yard sneak by Philpott set the tone. Then Tyler Jackson (11 carries for 88 yards) followed that up with two scores making it 22-0 in the first quarter. One of these was set up by an early interception by Jamal Tanner which provided good field position. “We ran the ball well but we really threw the ball well and caught it well,” Ollis said. Anthony Carson (six catches for 106 yards) made two of the better catches we’ve had all year long. (Reese Schlabach also had a 32 yard touchdown (Continued on page 14)

Blacksburg Wildcats shut out Landrum Cardinals 35-0 by Leah Justice

It was a disappointing night for Landrum’s Friday night football as Blacksburg shut out the Cardinals 35-0. The Blacksburg Wildcats jumped to an early lead in the first quarter with three quick touchdowns and never looked back. The Cardinals held Blacksburg to no more scores in the second quarter going into halftime at 21-0 but couldn’t turn it around in the second half. Part of Landrum’s problem came from the Wildcat’s defensive tackle Jeremy Holden who had six quarterback sacks, three of which came in the first quarter. The Cardinals few chances close to the goal line ended in heartbreak. The Cardinals moved the ball up field in the second quarter

and got to the six-yard line, but the Cardinal line couldn’t hold Holden, who sacked quarterback T.J. Fincher for a loss of 11 yards. Another sack left the Cardinals at 4th and 26 yards on that attempt. In the third quarter, Aaron Bryant threw a pass to Chris Schulman when the Cardinals were on the one-yard line but the pass was snatched by a Wildcat in the end zone. “We kind of played a sloppy game tonight,” said Landrum Head Coach Russell Mahaffey. “We’re going to have to come back next week and make some corrections on offense and defense.” Leading for Landrum in rushing was Bryant who had 16 carries for 83 yards. Fincher was 15 for 13 yards rushing and four for eight in passing for 10 yards. Bryant was three for 10 for 28 yards passing.

JoJo Wilkins had two carries for eight yards. The loss drops Landrum to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in Region 1-2A

play. The Cards will play at Crescent on Friday, Oct. 19 for another region matchup.

Polk men’s soccer beats Mountain Heritage in conference match by Elizabeth Trautman

Polk County’s Wolverine men varsity soccer team scored another conference win Tuesday night against Mountain Heritage High’s Cougars. The 1-0 win put the Polk County Wolverines at five wins, three losses and one tie for conference. Overall, the Wolverines have six wins, six loses and one tie. The Wolverines, despite the cold dark night, were moving fast and covering the field. Polk County appeared the better team, controlling the ball the majority of the time and outshooting Mountain Heritage 10 to six on goal. Senior Dallas Boone, the Wolverines goalkeeper, saved all six attempts from the Cougars to score. Although Coach Lennox Charles notes the team, “did not do the best job of finishing or taking [their] chances,” Polk

County Wolverines remained in the game, determined to pull off another victory. Nearly an hour into the game, senior midfielder John Modlin, no. 8, scored the only point for the game. Senior midfield player, Juan Vera, no. 3, assisted Modlin. Polk County’s efforts to keep the ball downfield allowed the goal attempts, and eventually resulted in a win. Coach Charles prides the team saying, “I thought we worked really hard and had periods of time when we were clearly the better team.” The Polk County men battled against Mountain Heritage’s strong offence, which as Coach Charles put it, “always looked dangerous.” The Polk County Wolverines also played the Madison High School Patriots last Wednesday, Oct. 10. With only five minutes remaining in the game, Modlin

headed in a corner kick by junior midfield Austin Wolfe, No. 9. Coach Charles notes that both teams had made much improvement since the first round

they played. “Our hard work and determination again got us through that game.”

Undefeated Polk Lady Wolverines volleyball takes down Avery by Elizabeth Troutman

Polk County’s Lady Wolverines volleyball team won another big shutout against Avery County last week, remaining undefeated in conference play with the 3-0 win. Coach Heather Claussen said she’s excited about the spark her team has shown. “If we continue to play with the fire and enthusiasm they played with tonight, there’s no telling how far we can go,” Claussen said. “We are at the tail end of our conference play season and this is where we know we really have to push hard from here out.” Hit after hit, it was evident that Avery was going to have a very tough night. Savanna Deaver, No. 7, and Katie Ruff, No. 3, were star players the first game, with aces back to back to back. Polk County led throughout the whole game, with a final score of 25-9. By game two, the ladies were electric and the crowd was charged.

Chelsea Kelly, No. 10, and No. 4 Maggie Phipps displayed top-notch serving, with three and six aces served respectfully for the match. The Lady Wolverines did whatever it took to keep the ball in control with several breath-catching saves, as well as lots of stretching and diving. The Wolverines put the second game away 25-11. In game three, Ruff dove for a quick save and then Kelly, No. 2 Rebecca Mitchell and Ruff nailed four spikes in a row. By this point, the lady Wolverines had captured their audience and had the opposing team by their horns. No. 1 Kara Overholt then dinked one into a barren hole, bringing the score 14-4. The next 10 points from the Lady Wolverines were amazing to watch, as the ladies seemed to elevate to a different level of playing. Savannah Deaver scored four more times, finding holes in Av-

ery’s court and slamming them in, leaving Avery no chance to respond. She totaled an amazing 19 kills for the match. Makenzie White, No. 5, got a hold of some of the action, with an amazing save, keeping the ball going, resulting

in a Polk County point. In the end, the Vikings went home with a 25-8 loss in the final game. The smashing win moved the team up 128 spots in ranking for the nation and up four spots to No. 56 in the state.

• MRPO

(continued from page 4)

“Polk County is a scenic area – that’s one of our strong points,” Smith said. “Most owners who come and say, “Well,I want a castle on top of the mountain, they are not trained in any kind of slope stability, they are just looking out at the view and saying, ‘Oh, isn’t this nice?’” Planning Board member Susan Welch said she didn’t want to see all protections lost although she did feel the current ordinance affected Saluda more so than the rest of the county. “To me it’s very important to either keep this in place or look at qualifications that are acceptable to make sure we have some protections in place,” Welch said. Saluda resident Hal Green said he felt Article 24 of the MRPO focused on building standards, while Article 25 was only considering aesthetics. “What I would suggest is start with [Article] 24 and look at the existing building standards as applied.

If there are any defects address them, however if the building code as it is applied here in Polk County works, then I suggest not mess with it,” Green said. Planning board members David Smith and Bill Ennis agreed that Article 24 of the ordinance should be their focus. Discussing the most contentious points, members agreed they needed to focus on issues related to MRPO’s countywide affect, the 25 percent slope and building restrictions related to fire code. County attorney Mike Eagan said the state Protective Mountain Ridge Act attempts to identify elevation levels where issues arise. But he said the board could do better by determining what the view sheds are they want to specifically protect and go from there. Eagan, Smith and Ennis plan to hash out ideas in relation to Article 24 of MRPO and bring those suggestions back to the board. The board will hold a workshop Monday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. to further discuss where to go from here.
