Anti-abortion protest held in Tryon by Samantha Hurst
Ashley Padgett and Leslie Turnage have started a new program called YouthServe at the Tryon Youth Center. The group meets every Sunday from 5-6 p.m. at Tryon Youth Center and is for grades 6-12. The purpose of YouthServe is to engage young members of the community in service projects. For more information, contact Leslie Turnage at gturnage6196@charter.net.

As motorists drove through Tryon on a sunny Sunday afternoon they were greeted with a chain of protestors lining N. Trade Street. The protestors, members of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, gathered from 2-3 p.m. Oct. 21. Father John Eckert said parishioners came out to “witness for life” and speak against abortion. “We came out to show that we need to be out in the world standing up for the most defenseless,” said Eckert. A total of 52 church members stood along the main thoroughfare holding signs that proclaimed, “Life is the first (Continued on page 4)

Residents concerned over proposed group home by Leah Justice
Several residents from the Holly Hills subdivision in Columbus attended the Thursday, Oct. 18 council meeting to express concern over a second family care or group home proposed in the subdivision.
Columbus Town Council had scheduled a public hearing concerning a text amendment to add family care or group homes to all three of its residential zoning districts. The text amendment is needed to comply with state and federal law regarding group
homes, but the public hearing was cancelled after the planning board tabled the recommendation. Although there were about 15 residents who expressed concern over the proposed group home, (Continued on page 4)
