Hundreds of bikers rumbled through Polk County on Saturday, Nov. 24 for the annual toy run for children. This year the area raised $8,005 and 55 bags of toys compared to $7,650 and 42 bags of toys in 2011. The money and gifts are distributed to the Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry, the Polk County Department of Social Services, Steps to HOPE and the Polk County Sheriff's Office for distribution. White Oak development water line paid off by Leah Justice

After purchasing White Oak Development earlier this year, Overmountain Trace Holdings LLC paid Polk County the remaining $115,752.50 for a water line to the property.

The Polk County Board of Commissioners met Nov. 19 and heard from county manager Ryan Whitson that the remaining balance was paid in full. Whitson said the check was received from a different LLC than the company

that owed the county. “I’m very happy we received that payment in full,” Whitson told commissioners. (Continued on page 4)

Skyuka Fine Art opening reception: Dawn Whitelaw’s “Variations” Skyuka Fine Art announces their next exhibit featuring the recent works of nationally-known artist and portrait painter Dawn Whitelaw. The opening reception of “Variations” will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 5-8 p.m. Dawn Whitelaw maintains a studio at ‘The Factory’ in Franklin, Tenn. For more than 25 years she taught basic principles of oil painting as an adjunct instructor at David Lipscomb University. Most of her formal instruction comes from continuing study with New York painter Everett Raymond Kinstler. She was awarded “Best in Show” at the 2001 national conference of the Portrait Society of America, and beginning in 2013 will serve as that

organization’s vice-chairman. Studies and quick sketches from life are a time-honored tradition among artists and an important part of Whitelaw’s work process. She finds time almost every week to paint a sketch from life. She said this experience is always informative and inspirational, and many of her pieces in this exhibit reflect that ‘freshness’ of capturing a moment as well as a feeling on canvas. Winter landscapes and summer plein air pieces grace Skyuka’s walls. Reflective and thought provoking portrait studies round off this masterful show. This exhibit runs through the end of December. TDDA Christmas Stroll to be held in downtown Tryon Dec. 7 The streets of downtown Tryon will ring in the holiday season with the ‘Tryon Christmas Stroll’ on Friday, Dec. 7 from 5-8 p.m.. Enjoy an evening strolling among downtown merchants with refreshments and treats while you visit with friends and begin your holiday shopping. Santa will make an appearance to hear what children young and old are wishing for this Christmas. There will also be street performances throughout the evening including the Tryon First Baptist Handbell Choir, Dance Dynamics, The Broken Bread Band, PCHS Flute & Sax Ensemble, PCHS Vocal Impressions and PCHS Marching Cadets.

Arnold Palmer designed golf course and had plans for an equestrian center. So far, nine holes of the golf course have been developed. The foreclosure was done on a $3.2 million loan White Oak secured in order to pay for sewer lines to the development from the City of Rutherfordton, according to White Oak Development Partners representatives. White Oak developers have said the loan was acquired in 2008 after the partners had expended approximately $40 million of their own money on the development of the property. The water line was paid for by Polk County in the amount of $359,505 with White Oak putting half the total costs in escrow. The remainder was to be paid by Aug. 31, 2009 with the construction completed in the fall of 2009. The water line was extended from the county’s main line that runs through Green Creek and connects the Broad River Water Authority to the Inman Campobello Water District.

He also said the county had sued White Oak for the payment with a remaining $25,000 in interest issued by the judge. Whitson later told the Bulletin he would not seek the interest money. “I will not be attempting to collect any interest from the other entity, which is in bankruptcy,” Whitson said. The county has also received all property tax payments for White Oak except 2012 taxes, which are not past due until Jan. 8, 2013. The development was auctioned in February with Overmountain Trace Holdings winning the bid with a $4,750,000 offer. The 941.93-acre subdivision and golf community is located off Pea Ridge Road in the Green Creek Township and was originally developed by Irish partners Gene Kinsella, Austin MacHale and Leonard Kinsella. Richard H. Klerk II Richard H. Klerk II, 86, husband of Eleanor Schickler Klerk, died Monday, November 12, 2012 at Mary Black Hospital. Born in Queens County, N.Y., he was a son of the late Richard H. and Loretta Seidenburg Klerk.

Dyer and was the widow of Mack McGuinn Jr., who died in 1980. She retired from Broyhill Furniture in 1986, and was a member of Big Level Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter Kathy Dawn McGuinn of Columbus, N.C. and a brother, Floyd “Bill” Dyer (Carolyn) of Mill Spring, N.C., as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter Hilda Elaine McGuinn; three sisters: Elsie,

Bessie and Louise; two brothers: Lonnie Ezra and Waitsel Lee and a great-nephew Matthew Dyer. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, November 26, 2012 in Big Level Baptist Church with Rev. Mr. Klerk was a good and beloved husband, father and grandfather. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, retired as a radio engineer with N.Y. Telephone Co. and was a Mason. Bonnie Lawter Pack Bonnie Marie Lawter Pack, 94, of Green Creek, N.C. passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2012 in Fleshers Health Care Center, Fairview, N.C. Born Dec. 17, 1917, she was the daughter of the late James Andrew and Magnelly Ruff Lawter of Polk County, and widow of the late Ralph Pack who died in 1979. She was a native of Polk County and of Baptist faith. She worked as a seamstress several years with Doncaster, Tanner and Jo Lo Companies. She also did private sewing from her home for many years. Her hobbies included sewing, crafts gardening, reading and traveling. Surviving are three daughters, Shirley Wilson of Flagler Beach, Fla., Janice Lavert (Roland) of Palm Coast, Fla., and Hazel Jean Woolard (Steve) of Arden, N.C. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Sharon Keeling (Alan), Rhonda Boggs (Lenny), Gregg Weaver, Amy Davis (Brad), Shan Woolard and Jill Villarosa (Sam); six great-grandchildren: Chris Welch, Chel Krvavac (Jugo), Raina Perry, Dallas and Hunter Davis and Emma Villarosa, as well as two great-great grandchildren: Bailey Welch and Lukas Krvavac. She was preceded in death by a son, Duron Pack, who died in 1992, and five brothers and three sisters. Williamson grand marshall for Landrum Christmas parade Landrum Columnist Anne Regan

Joe Williamson has been chosen as the grand marshall in Landrum’s Christmas Parade Thursday, Nov. 29 starting at 5 p.m. Mr. Williamson, owner of Wi l l i a m s o n P a i n t C e n t e r said, “I’ve been selling paint for over 75 of my 94 years.” Born and raised in Charlotte, Williamson finished school and enlisted in the aviation branch of the US Army - the Army Air Corps now know as the Air Force – and was stationed at Hamilton Field in San Francisco, Calif. For the next four years lifelong memories were formed. With World War II at full force, the Air Corps sent Williamson overseas to the China, Burma, India Command. Flying on missions, he saw war and beauty at the same time. Williamson’s philosophy to life is, “Don’t remember the bad stuff.” Williamson remembers fly-

ing low in the valleys because the planes could not get over the Himalayas. More than 350 planes were lost throughout this type of mission. Becoming known as The Aluminium Trail, Williamson said, “they are still finding parts.” Williamson’s last command as a Sgt. Major was on a troop carrier flying into the jungle to drop, by parachute, food and supplies to the troops. When the war ended Williamson came home to Charlotte in the fall of 1945. With his Brownie camera he took photos both from the land and air of what he was experiencing. Williamson said he saw “the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen, the Taj Mahal.” The camera is long gone but the pictures are treasured in an album. Pittsburgh Plate Glass relocated Williamson to Greenville as regional sales manager. In Spartanburg he met his was of 64 years, Allene, and they had three children, Tom, Joey and Missy. son saw the need for his type of store in Landrum and opened it in 1985. Tom Williamson manages the store; you can find Joe at the store after his workout at a local gym. Williamson has remained very active in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spartanburg for 40

years; driving there every Sunday to attend. When asked about being the grand marshall for Landrum’s parade, Williamson said, “I’m Humbled they want me.” Look and wave to Williamson - he’ll be wearing his Army Air Corps hat.

Tryon Elementary raises $700 from McTeacher Night at McDonald’s Tryon Elementary School faculty and staff said they had great support from the community for the school’s recent McTeacher’s Night. “We had a blast,” said one teacher. Mrs. Lewis, Mrs. Ireland

and Ms. Lance took turns at the drive-thru window. Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Heston and Mrs. Kilgore took turns making fries, while Mr. Cowan and Mrs. Guffey were in the back making nuggets and sandwiches. Mrs. Sharpe, Mrs. Brown,

Ms. Evans, Mrs. Bruce, Mr. Sizemore and many others helped greet customers, clean off tables and keep everything stocked. “It was such a fun night, we hope the customers had as much fun as the TES staff,” another

Lions make contributions to Superstorm Sandy relief Earlier this month, the Caribbean and the East Coast of the United States were hit by Superstorm Sandy. Lions knew that Lions would be there to help. Not only are Lions on the ground, supporting each other and people in the affected communities, but Lions around the world are generously providing donations to the disaster relief fund at Lions Clubs International Foundation. It is because of the disaster relief fund that LCIF could quickly respond to Superstorm Sandy,

immediately providing $220,000 in grants for those in need. Local Lions in affected areas were able to put provided funds to use, delivering food, water, blankets and flashlights. Columbus Lions contributed $600 toward Sandy relief. Columbus Lions will soon be visiting their visually impaired persons (VIPs) with Christmas goodies, including poinsettias, large print calendars, handmade ornaments, and for many of them, grocery store gift cards. Be assured that 100 percent

of your donation to Lions Clubs goes to help people. All overhead of the clubs and the international office is paid by Lions’ dues.
