Commissioners’ $185k gets sheriff 5 new cars Half of fleet over 100k miles by Leah Justice

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has ordered five new vehicles after commissioners took $185,000 out of the county’s fund balance to get the fleet up to date.

The sheriff’s office ordered two Ford SUV Interceptors from Stott’s Ford and three Dodge Chargers from Golf Dodge last week. The new board of commissioners was sworn into office on Dec. 3 and one of their first

decisions was to grant the sheriff $185,000 to purchase needed vehicles. The sheriff’s has a total of 31 vehicles in its fleet and as of October over half of those vehicles had more than 100,000 miles on them. (Continued on page 4)

Lingering messages

Contractors with Mosely Construction, owned by Philip Mosely, began tearing out walls in 120 Pacolet Street across from Tryon First Baptist Church Thursday, Dec. 13 to make way for meeting space. When they did they discovered the following written inside the wall, “Built for Dr. Allen J. Jervey by Wayne W. Credsman, Oct. 14, 1936.” On another wall the Latin phrase “Non Omnis Moriar” or “I shall not wholly die” was written inside. This phrase comes from one of Rome’s most famous lyric poets, Horace. Bridge work expected to end this week On Nov. 26 the North Carolina Department of Transportation closed a lane of traffic going in each direction on Interstate 26 in Polk County for bridge repairs. The lane closures were set to last continuously for four weeks and are expected to conclude at 6 a.m. Dec. 21.

A DOT release said the closures were necessary for crews to carry out rehabilitation work on the bridge on I-26 at Exit 59. The work is part of a $2.4 million contract NCDOT has awarded to Taylor & Murphy Construction Co. of Asheville to upgrade 10 bridges in Polk and Henderson counties.

vehicles. Pack said the county needs to get sheriff vehicles on a regular replacement rotation every budget year. Other commissioners agreed and the motion was approved unanimously. The county decided to allow Sheriff Donald Hill to take the lump sum of money and purchase what he needed. Previous boards of commissioners had the sheriff work with the county manager and the manager would make the purchases. Wheeler said it would probably take two to three years to get vehicles replaced as needed but with a regular rotation every year the fleet should be in good shape. A lieutenant and a sergeant will drive the two Ford Explorers and deputies will drive the new chargers. All vehicles will be black in color with the chargers being striped. Wheeler said the sheriff’s office may stripe one explorer that will be driven by the sergeant due to the officer being on patrol. The total cost for the five new vehicles is not yet known due to costs to equip the vehicles. Wheeler said a road ready Ford SUV Interceptor is approximately $28,000 and a Dodge Charger is approximately $25,500. When the sheriff ’s office retires a vehicle, the county normally tries to utilize it in another department or sell them on govdeals.com. The money from the sale of a sheriff’s vehicle goes towards the Polk County School system, Wheeler said. The vehicles are scheduled to be complete in eight to 10 weeks. Stott’s Ford will continue to maintain all the sheriff’s vehicles, Wheeler said.

Capt. Mike Wheeler said once a patrol vehicle has 100,000 miles it costs more in maintenance because breakdowns begin occurring. The last vehicles the sheriff’s office received were two Ford Police Interceptors earlier this year. Last year the sheriff’s office received three Ford Crown Victorias. All of which now have approximately 40,000 miles on them. As of October, the sheriff’s fleet included five 2006 Crown Victorias with 118,803 miles, 123,789 miles, 126,871 miles, 131,392 miles and 132,460 miles. A 2007 Crown Victoria had 118,722 in October, two 2008 Crown Victorias had 105,984 and 113,700 and a 2009 Crown Victoria had 104,361 miles, according to sheriff records. Other vehicles with high mileage include a 2006 Ford Ranger with 113,538 miles and a 1998 Ford F150 with 142,680 miles. Looking ahead, there are also four 2010 Crown Victorias, which will soon reach 100,000 miles as well as other vehicles, a total of 16 in the fleet, with more than 100,000 miles already on them. The sheriff’s office patrols an average of 4,000 and 6,000 miles per week. During the Dec. 3 meeting, re-elected commissioner Tom Pack motioned to give the sheriff $185,000 out of available fund balance to purchase new

City celebrates business community with mural by Anne Regan

On Saturday, Dec. 8 a crowd gathered in downtown Landrum to view a gift offered by new business owner Kim Ryan. Ryan, owner of the recently opened State Farm Agency in Landrum, wanted to give the community a special gift so she consulted with her father Bill Robinson on what would be best. “After kicking around ideas of a community mural, I asked my son in law Bill Ryan for assistance,” Robinson said. The two men then devoted their free time to taking photos of the Landum business community, Ryan driving and Robinson snapping away. Robinson, realizing he needed more than just photos, connected with Sherman Swofford, owner of Skyvision Signs, in Spartanburg. Swofford and his staff immediately understood the technical issues of piecing together all of Robinson’s

photos on a large scale, Robinson said. Completing the mural was not an overnight project. Months of talking with town manager Steve Wolochowicz, council, the city’s architectural committee and Darrell and Lynda Bustle, owners of

Landrum Hardware, ensued. Darrell Bustle said the idea excited him. “Ten years ago I wanted to have a local artist paint a mountain scene on the big old blank wall of my building,” Bustle said, but the costs were monumental.

When Robinson approached Bustle about advertising Ryan’s State Farm business on the wall, conversation returned to the mural idea. Just over a week ago Landrum Mayor Robert Briggs unveiled (Continued on page 7)

New Pottery Class offered at Tryon Arts and Crafts Tryon Arts and Crafts School presents Mary Lou Diekmann as the instructor of a new Thursday and Friday afternoon wheel throwing class. In Diekmanns class, the students will learn how to efficiently center and throw pots; a skill students will learn quickly. They will also learn how to add embellishments, such as clay carving, pulling handles and making covers, to add flair and uniqueness to their pieces. In the 1-3 p.m. Thursday class, students will throw new pieces, while on Fridays from 1-2 p.m., they will concentrate on trimming, decorating and assembly. Diekmann has been a professional artist most of her life, beginning with painting murals on musicians’ vans while in college. She has achieved recognition and commercial success with her pottery, painting, and

sculptural jewelry. From 1974 to 1981 she worked at Scituate Potters, a large east coast pottery business that produced one of a kind art pottery as well as production pieces for the commercial market. While there Diekmann was master potter in charge of all design as well as training production personnel in wheel throwing. Tryon Arts and Crafts School is located at 373 Harmon Field Rd. in Tryon. Tryon Arts and Crafts School is a non-profit organization that exists to provide creative opportunities for everyone through education, instruction and expression of heritage and contemporary arts and crafts in a friendly, stimulating and enriching environment.
