• School safety (continued from page 1)

Polk County Schools Superintendent Bill Miller said all principals are having meetings this week with teachers to review policies as well. Miller said schools practice lockdowns periodically and local law enforcement often participates in those mock lockdowns to offer suggestions. Miller also said the schools are offering counseling to any students who may need it. And obviously, school staff members are going to be more sensitive to who is coming into the school, Miller added. “It’s certainly a sad, sad thing and seems so senseless,” Miller said. “It’s so gut-wrenching to think about.” Miller said it appears the teachers and principal at Sandy Hook Elementary School did everything they could to protect the students and he has the upmost confidence that the teachers and principals

would do all they could to protect our children in Polk County if something tragic ever occurred. “We’re going to review procedures of keeping all outside doors locked,” Miller said. “It’s not a perfect system, but we do the best we can.” Miller said Polk County School procedures have the same basic strategy as used in the Connecticut school; for teachers to lock rooms and get the students to safety. In the case in Connecticut when the gunman shot his way into the school, solutions to any future shootings are difficult to figure out. Miller said state and federal officials also need to improve mental health programs. He said there are so many people and families who are in crisis and don’t know where to turn. Capt. Tim Wright with the Tryon Police Department who is a local law enforcement instructor, said every one to two years, local law enforcement trains for rapid deployment at schools. School staff is invited to participate in the

training in order to be prepared, Wright said. Wright said Polk County High School teachers all have walkietalkies, which is helpful for communications and those channels are heard over law enforcement radios. Local parents have been shocked to think something so tragic could happen in a small town. Tryon Elementary School, for example, has 450 students, approximately the same amount as Sandy Hook. Parents were visibly shaken taking their kids into the classroom Monday with some parents crying as they said goodbye to their children. Local parents offered their grief and suggestions of how to better protect schools through Facebook following the tragedy. “First of all, I am so deeply saddened to even begin to try and fathom what the family and friends of the victims, and the survivors and their families are going through,” said parent Jenny Bland.

“Our prayers are with them! From what I understand, Newtown is a small, close and friendly community, like the wonderful area we live in, and only about 8,000 people larger than Polk County. My daughter is in 4th grade at TES (Tryon Elementary School), and I have never, ever felt she was unsafe, but when you realize that something so horrendous could happen to innocent people in an area about our size, it goes without saying that our schools are going to have a challenge ahead of them to make parents, and even the children that know what happened in Conneticut. feel safe. I have no doubt that TES has the most wonderful teachers and administrators that would do anything within their power to protect my child. For that I feel very blessed!!” Parent, coach and teacher Jenny McGrane Wolfe said she is humbled. “My first thought was…if my child were a victim…and my next (Continued on page 4)

• School safety (continued from page 3)

was…how could I protect my students if someone presented death and destruction,” Wolfe said. “I feel as helpless as those who died must have felt. I know as the only authority in a classroom I would present the first line of defense as a natural reaction, which would only expose a helpless target. I don’t have any answers only the Lord does. May he shield our community from such a tragedy.” Wolfe, like many others, also said if someone wants to kill someone they can. In the Connecticut case, if the shooter had asked to enter the school as a relative of a teacher he would have been admitted, she said. “With an armed escort, he could shoot the guard. With metal detectors and all doors locked he could stand on the outside and kill as people exit,” said Wolfe. “If someone wants to kill they can find a way. The only way your child is safe is by God’s grace.”

Suggestions from parents went strongly for locking doors from the outside but able to open from the inside so there is no safety issues. Others suggested law enforcement officers and metal detectors. “It starts with parents and how we raise our children,” Olivia Whiteside said. “Schools need to be safe, doors locked and children/teachers/parents taught the appropriate safety measures.

unwelcoming especially in an elementary school. We had one (guard) at Polk County High and I honestly don’t think they deterred anyone and they would never be able to take a gunman. Apparently something is going wrong on a deeper level and we need to worry more about reaching those who are about to snap and stop it and prevent it. If they want to get into the school and do some damage,

“My personal opinion is they need to get school resource officers back in schools who are trained; trained with other deputies in case of an active shooter. And it costs money, I know, but you can’t put a price on a child’s life. I’m not saying it’s perfect, but our odds will be a lot better.”

-- Polk County Sheriff Donald Hill

But something has shifted and changed in the last 25 years. I don’t ever remember school shootings ever being reported growing up. Columbine was the first and that was when I was graduating from college. I agree metal detectors and guards can be scary and

they will find a way. Two school shooters did it from afar rather than in the school. Had they gotten the appropriate help to begin with perhaps it could have been prevented.” Amy Hyder Corrigan said she has a student in Boiling Springs (Spartanburg County District 2), which has an armed resource officer. “His office is in clear view of the only unlocked door in the building, the main office,” Corrigan said. “He has a taser and gun. I think gun control would be an officer taking down the perp (etrator) and lessen the chance of others getting hurt or killed. Taking away all the guns from the law-abiding citizens is not the answer. Criminals don’t go out and register and buy their guns through legal channels anyhow.” Polk County Sheriff Donald Hill said Polk County Schools does a good job with what they have and practice their procedures. When asked how the schools could be better protected, Hill said he personally thinks school resource officers would be a way for the schools to be better protected. Hill said Polk County Schools all practice procedures and the sheriff’s office does one or two walk-throughs at different schools every day. The purpose of the walk-throughs include to ensure everything is okay, he said, as well

as communication with school staff and students. “I want kids to see officers and be able to talk to them,” Hill said. Polk County currently has unarmed guards at Polk County High School and Polk County Middle School. They are not currently contracted through the sheriff’s office. Miller said the high school guard has a radio directly connected to law enforcement for quick communications. Hill said he’s gone over and over what could have prevented the Connecticut shooting and thought, what if that happened here? Hill’s solutions involve a lot of “ifs” just like most people across the country, but he said if Sandy Hook would have had a trained school resource officer, that officer could have noticed a guy with an assault rifle dressed in black and a vest trying to enter the school. A trained officer would have immediately called for back-up and done his job to stop the threat, Hill said. It may have not prevented all the deaths, but possibly some, Hill said, and maybe all the deaths. A school resource officer is trained with other officers in rapid deployment and trained in how an officer goes in and after the threat, Hill said. “My personal opinion is they need to get school resource officers back in schools who are trained; trained with other deputies in case of an active shooter,” Hill said. “And it costs money, I know, but you can’t put a price on a child’s life. I’m not saying it’s perfect, but our odds will be a lot better.” The Chaplains of the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a prayer vigil Tuesday, Dec. 18 in memory of the victims of the Newtown, Conn. school shooting. The vigil will be held at 7 p.m. at the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, located at 8045 Howard Street, Spartanburg, S.C. 29303. There will be cards people can sign to send to the victim’s families.

Letter to the Editor

Making room for real Chrismtas story To the editor: Are we not fortunate that

our county seat was laid out with four corners reserved for churches? And that churches were indeed built on three of them. And that since Columbus Baptist built their building with a large set-back to preserve the lovely trees for the squirrels to play in, there is room for a large display of the real Christmas

story for everyone to see and enjoy while waiting for the light to change. And that therefore there is no need to upset those who feel that to put such a display on the courthouse lawn would imply sponsorship of a religion by the government. – Garland O. Goodwin, Columbus

LMS students honor Arbor Day by planting a tree Landrum Columnist Anne Regan

On Dec. 7, 2012, Jackie Putman, eighth-grade English Language Arts Teacher at Landrum Middle School and her students celebrated South Carolina Arbor Day. Putnam is president of The Lady Slipper Garden Club of Spartanburg, S.C., “The club has generously donated a tree to be planted at Landrum Middle School,” Putnam said. The tree chosen is an October Glory Maple. The school agricultural education class lead by teacher, Ryan Settle, prepared and dug the hole for the tree, which was not an easy task with the lack of rain. Settle and his sixth graders, with their unspent energy got the job done. Putnam, seeing the opportunity for her students, said she “had her class read and research about the benefits of trees in our community.” The students created banners and posters also presenting The Lady Slipper Garden Club members with a specially designed thank you card. Putman’s class recited poems, Reader’s Theatre and shared the history of S.C. Arbor Day. After the program the eighthgrade English arts class and the

sixth-grade agricultural education class each took a turn at planting this history making tree, one shovel at a time. “The simple act of planting a tree represents a belief that the tree will grow and some day, provide wood products, wildlife habitat, erosion control, shelter from the wind and sun, beauty and inspiration for ourselves and our children,” Putnam said.

Landrum undefeated after win over Liberty Red Devils by Doug Dickerson

The Landrum boys varsity basketball team hosted the Liberty Red Devils Friday night, Dec. 14, and treated their fans to another impressive win. The Cardinals continue their undefeated streak of 6-0 with the 96-53 victory. On offense Landrum players shot 42 percent from the field and made 79 percent of their free throws. Landrum started the game with a 3-pointer and ended the game with 11 total 3-pointers. The Cardinal defense, meanwhile, held the Red Devils to only 8 points in the first quarter, while they scored 23 points. Landrum started a full court press at the start of the second quarter that gave Liberty a lot of problems and led to Landrum scoring points off steals and turnovers. The Cardinal press and defense only allowed 12 points in the second quarter. The Red Devils were crushed the first half. They went into the locker room down 31 points. The Cardinals kept the Red Devils from making a comeback in the second half. Landrum had a team total of 37 rebounds, 19

of which were offensive. Senior Truston Whiteside had nine rebounds, followed by teammate Daniel Bridges with 7 rebounds. Going into the fourth quarter, Landrum held a 37-point lead with

the score 67-30. Both teams came out in the fourth quarter making 3-point field goals but it wasn’t enough for the Red Devils. Bridges led Landrum with 18 points, while Whiteside had 16.

Chris Schulman and Trevor Walker both had 13, and TJ Fincher ended the night with 11 points. Landrum plays Blacksburg next in a AA Region I match up at home on Tuesday, Dec. 18.

With this win Landrum improves their record to 5-1 and the Red Devils drop to 2-5 on the year. The Cardinals jumped into the

great defense, which led to a lot of exciting fast breaks. Liberty’s defense just couldn’t hold up to the strong offensive play from the Lady Cardinals. Landrum was able to

ease. The Lady Cardinals finished the first half up by 19 points. Landrum came into this match

Polk boys lose conference game by Fulton Hampton

Polk County had its first WHC conference game Friday night, Dec. 14, versus the Madison Patriots. The Wolverines came out strong and controlled most of the game. However, the Patriots came back in the final minutes to overtake Polk 41-37. Polk held what seemed to be a comfortable half-time lead of 2416. Polk maintained a reasonable lead until late in the fourth quarter, when in the last 3 minutes Madison outscored Polk 13-4. According to Coach Josh McEntire Polk missed several easy opportunities to score and had some costly turnovers. Polk was led by Alec Philpott who scored 10 points. Jaron Bontrager and Todd Yoder added 8 points each. This puts Polk’s record at 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the Western Highland’s conference. Polk faces another conference game at Mountain Heritage this Friday, Dec. 21.

up with three players out sick, which meant the Cardinal bench had to come out and perform well. The whole team did a great job of playing together and using every one in their game plan. Landrum kept up the same pace of play in the second half to cruise to victory over the Red Devils. The Cardinals had four 3-pointers for the game and 10 different players that

put points on the board. Sydnie Brown, a junior guard, scored 21 points to lead the Lady Cardinals followed by Macy Atkins with 11 points, Keri Ridings and Becca Burress both with 6 points, Rachel Cooper with 5, Lexy Schulman with 4, and Painter, Whitmire, Jackson and Jenkins with 2 points each. The Landrum Lady Cardinals will face the Blacksburg Wildcats in a AA Region I grudge match on Tuesday, Dec. 18 at home.

Lee Mink of LEAP Farm said recently, “Success in our future depends on the gardens we grow today.” This was part of a conversation we were having about Lee’s dream to open up LEAP Farm into an educational facility, as well as where he currently grows food for his family and for marketplace. I wanted to share with you this week about his upcoming “Sustainable Gardening and Farming” workshop that he and Lynn Ronzello of Thunder Ridge Farm in Green Creek are offering in January. Once you are hooked on the idea, consider sharing with a friend or reserving a seat in someone’s name as a Christmas gift. Learning to organically grow food for oneself and family or friends is certainly a gift that will last a lifetime. Over a two-day intensive workshop with both classroom time and field time, attendees will learn a high-yield system of growing in local soil and weather conditions and using time-tested organic methods. The course covers bed making, composting, soil amendments and soil blocks. Lee and Lynn have gardened and farmed in this area, collectively, for more than 25 years. They will share with you what to plant and when to plant it. They have unique, conservation-minded tips and tricks to share for irrigation practices: how to grow more with less.

Mich., Ronzello’s aim was to grow to provide healthy food for her family, including all her own baby food. Organic was the only method used in those early days, prior to pesticides like DDT and Round Up-ready inputs and seeds. Seventeen years ago, Ronzello and her family purchased 23 acres in Green Creek, now called Thunder Ridge Farm, where soil blocks, companion planting, soil health, row cover are part of her marks’ for success: accepting sacrifice and learning what works and when is learned through her experience. “ There is no one way to be sustainable. You must learn the basics from experienced growers and then tend your land based on what it reveals it needs and can yield for you. As my children have always been a part of tending the farm, be it the gardens, horses, or other animals, it’s my daughter that I’ve learned the most from.” Ronzello’s daughter, Jamie, owns her own organic farm, Barking Deer, on the Hawaiian Island of Molokai, where Ronzello visits and assist in the sustainable farming often.
