St. Luke’s Center of Behavioral Medicine receives donation Patients in St. Luke’s Hospital’s Center of Behavioral Medicine received a nice surprise for Christmas through a donation from Pure Country Weavers. These afghans were carefully wrapped, lovingly placed under the Christmas tree and given to patients on Christmas day. Started in 1988, Pure Country Weavers is one of the largest weavers today and the largest fine arts tapestry provider in the world. Pure Country is still a family-owned business with ties all the way back to when they made uniforms for George Washington’s army. All of their products are made in Lynn. “This donation is perfect for our residents,” said Wanda Thompson, activities director for St. Luke’s Hospital’s Center of Behavioral Medicine. “I think it is wonderful that Pure (Continued on page 6)

Aiming to celebrate Saluda’s heritage and arts culture, the Saluda Business Association plans to hold its 10th annual Saluda Arts Festival May 18 and is currently seeking entries. “Ten years is a milestone for this grassroots arts festival that started with only 18 artists and has now grown to 60 artisans stretching along historic Main Street in Saluda. Every art media is represented including paintings, pottery, metal work, jewelry, sculptures, fiber, and more,” said festival organizers. With a non-jury event, festival organizers expect a large number

$537,738 grant for the project and will have to contribute $164,169 due to the size of the sewer line needed for the project. The project will include $25,607 in administration to IPDC, sewer improvements of $512,131 and the more than $164,000 from the town to upsize the pipe from a 12-inch line to a 24-inch line. The town must pay for part of the project because the state is requiring the East Howard Street main sewer line be replaced with a 24-inch line in order to handle the flows. The grant only allows for construction of lines up to 12 inches. The East Howard Street area has suffered from sewage spills for years during heavy rains. The town has done repairs and studies over the years and worked with the state but determined the pipe is too small for the current flow and the only permanent fix is to replace the line. The town has discussed the grant for about a year with Tryon initially being denied due to lack of funding. State officials, however, provided a waiver because
of entries. Some types of work (i.e. jewelry) will be accepted on a limited basis. Early entries will be given first choice of booth location. Applications for participation can be downloaded from the www. saluda.com web site or by contacting Susie Welsh at 828-749-3900 or email at sswelsh@tds.net. Applications are due by March 15. “Saluda abounds with natural assets. County Courthouse. He was an active member of Faith Baptist Church in Mill Spring. Frank is survived by his two children, Carolyn Elaine Johnson and Michael Lee Johnson, as well as two grandchildren, Eric Lee Johnson and Crystal Elaine Johnson. Polk boys get first conference win versus Mitchell by Fulton Hampton
In the season’s third conference game Friday, Jan. 4 the Polk County Wolverines defeated the visiting Mitchell Mountaineers 76-64. Anthony Carson led the way with 21 points, but the Wolverines had four players in double figures. Alec Philpott and Saquan Miller both had 12 points and Jordan Smith added 10, primarily in a critical fourth-quarter stretch. Polk led at half time 44-32 and, although Mitchell closed the gap several times, the Wolverines were able to maintain a double digit lead most of the second half. Coach Josh McEntire liked the effort and focus of the team. “Offensively we did the things we wanted to do; we pushed the ball we attacked the basket and
took good shots. Defensively we are still not getting back and rotating as a team on every possession … so we need to keep working on defense. We have to make free throws; we were 9 of 25 from the free throw line. Overall I was pleased with the performance.” Coach McEntire used a variety of combinations and lineups during the game and is pleased with the flexibility that provides continuing in conference play. “It gives us a lot of options having kids like Jordan Smith and Saquan Miller that can play 3 (small forward) through 5 (center) ... Polk girls unable to hold off Mitchell in second half by Fulton Hampton
The Lady Wolverines were looking for their first conference win of the season against the Mitchell Mountaineers this past Friday at home. Polk held a 24-20 half time lead but was outscored in the second half 30-20, resulting in a disappointing 50-44 loss. Although overmatched by size, Polk took advantage through the quickness of their pressure defense leading to numerous steals in the first half. Freshman Haley Kropp led Polk in the first quarter with 6 points. Kara Overholt provided most of the second quarter scoring with 9
points. Overholt had 16 points along with 9 rebounds for the game to lead Polk. Coming out cold in the second half, Polk was outscored 15-7 in the third quarter with Mitchell taking a 35 -31 lead. “We came out flat and only scored 7 points, which was probably the difference in the game,” Coach Craig Culbreth said. Further summarizing the game, he said, “(We) Did not shoot the ball very well and we could not handle their big girl No. 32; they had two big girls that keep getting inside on us.” (Continued on page 11)

Since 1989, PAC has helped to conserve over 8,400 acres in Polk County and surrounding area.
Santa, Mrs. Clause and Jingle the Elf used Polk County Transportation to travel around Columbus while checking Santa’s naughty or nice list with some of the county employees. Santa was met in Columbus by his trusty reindeer Rudolph to guide him to the county offices. Santa found that the county employees were all on the nice list. Then back to the Meeting Place he went to visit with the senior citizens for a delicious Christmas lunch. (photo submitted)

Tombstone Cycles man’s life ambition

Bill Turner decided to take advantage of his new location in naming his Landrum business Tombstone Cycles. “There’s never a problem giving new customers directions; telling them it’s next to the Landrum Cemetery on E. Rutherford St/Route 14 [works],” said Turner’s father Richard. Richard first purchased the property from Thermal Belt Yarn in the 1980s to open Richard L. Construction. He said he was immediately drawn by the history he discovered and how, “the old survey shows chain and link, a metes and bounds survey.” The shop for Tombstone Cycles now sits in a part of the building that was the boiler room for a cotton gin in the early 1900s. Around the 1930s it was a hosiery mill. It was here, in this old shop, where Bill Turner discovered his passion for motorcycles 24 years ago. “My dad had a business in this building, since the 1980s. He rented space to a mechanic who fixed cycles and I would come and hang out,” Turner said. Turner took his first ride on a motorcycle at age 5 and always had his eyes in a cycle magazine. “I had a small repair business right here when I was 12 years old. I put a small sign down by

the road and customers came,” he said. When he was 14 he worked summers at a repair shop in Spartanburg. Always repairing and trading up cycles, by 16 Turner owned his first motorcycle. That summer and after school he took a job at Junk Yard Jacks in Greer. While he attended Landrum High School and Swofford Technical School in his junior and senior year he was able to take courses in computer aided drafting and design. “[Teacher] Steve Blackwell had a strong positive influence
on me,” he said. Eventually, after stints in Charleston and Aiken, Turner came back to take a position in Spartanburg as an engineer. “I’ve always had a passion for it, always wanted to have my own cycle business,” he said. With family and friends’ encouragement Turner opened Tombstone Cycles, a business he hopes to maintain through retirement. Tombstone Cycles offers motorcycle, ATV parts and accessories as well as a full service shop for servicing and repairs. On-site mechanic Bryon Wagner says it’s his “dream
job.” He even recently had the learning opportunity to work on a vintage motorcycle. During the week Richard Turner mans the service desk. Saturday all hands are on deck with phones ringing, pick up on repaired cycles and customers coming in the door. At age 36, Turner offers the necessary technical knowledge and customer service. “Customer service is my priority,” said Turner. “We are doing well and have plans to expand, at this location, in 2013.” You can reach the shop at 864-457-7388.

Anna and Emily’s mother Lynn is also an experienced artist and teacher. “Margaret does a great job of meeting each girl where she is and inspiring her to step up from there,” she said.
Curtis brings passion of her art not only as a teacher but also as a dynamic visual artist. She was represented for 10 years by P.P.O.W. Gallery in New York City. Her work has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. She was included in “The Figure: Another Side of Modernism” at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and “Bad Girls” at The New Museum in New York and other major group shows. She has also shown at Zolla Lieberman Gallery in Chicago, The Huntington Beach Art Center in California and Salama Caro Gallery of London. Curtis is the recipient of the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship, Yale Summer School of Art and the Predmore Award from Duke University.
“The students are completely connected to their work in Margaret’s class. There is an intensity of concentration and excitement about the setting in which they’re learning,” said Beth Child, executive director of TFAC. “The class is a gem.” Besides Curtis’ Oil Painting class, TFAC offers Kindermusik for families with children newborn to 7 years. Subtitled “Defender of the Realm, 1940 –1965,” the book was begun several years before the author, William Manchester, died in 2004 but was completed by his friend Reid, who lives and works in Tryon.
