Man arrested for stealing from vending machines On Jan. 5 the Tryon Police Department responded to a breaking and entering and larceny from coin-operated vending machines at the Tryon IGA. The suspect took several hundred dollars and equipment from the vending machines. The IGA was able to download surveillance video that showed the suspect breaking into the machines, according to the Tryon Police Depatment. The police department distributed pictures obtained from the video to surrounding

personnel to enter the building. Currently in cases of alarms emergency personnel has to locate an emergency contact person to come and unlock a building. A key box would prevent emergency personnel

agencies. On Jan. 14, Landrum Police Department officers notified Tryon officers of a vehicle sitting on the side of the road in their jurisdiction that matched the description of the vehicle in question. Tryon officers met with the Landrum officers and identified the vehicle as being the one used during the commission of the crime. The vehicle was towed by the Landrum Police Department due to it being a traffic

hazard. The owner was identified through DMV and the description matched suspect Christopher Lee Bowen, 37, of Landrum. Warrants for felony larceny from a vending machine and misdemeanor burglary were issued. Landrum police officers arrested the suspect and he was extradited to North Carolina. Bowen was taken to the Polk County Jail and placed under a $5,000 secured bond. – article submitted by the Tryon Police Department

from having to break into doors and windows to access the building during times of alarms. Council discussed whether or not to require it for only new businesses or for current businesses and which ordinance would include the requirement. To w n m a n a g e r J o n a t h a n Kanipe said there are currently

146 businesses in town, so requiring key boxes for current businesses would be a pretty h i g h n u m b e r. H e s a i d t h e town should look at costs and prepare a presentation to give to businesses. He also said he wants to look at what other towns have done in terms of the requirement. Councilman Ricky McCallister said he would like for Kanipe to work with businesses and get their feedback to see if they are interested. “I think we should talk to businesses that are here now,” McCallister said. “I’m sure if I had a business I would want someone to protect me if I wasn’t there.” Kanipe said another thing council may want to consider is requiring the boxes when a business has a new occupancy since a change in business is likely to happen more often than

Christopher Lee Bowen

new buildings being constructed. Key boxes are used throughout the state and are often required by building/zoning inspection offices to ensure and improve accessibility to commercial buildings in the event of an emergency, Kanipe said. The typical key box is a secure, tamper-proof device with a lock operable only by a fire department master key and containing building entry keys that may be required for access in an emergency. Before utilization, Kanipe said, a strict policy for maintaining and securing the master key would be in place and policies would be developed to ensure that no tampering would occur with the keys. Council directed staff to look into the idea more and plans to discuss it further during its February meeting.

Guntram Gersch Guntram H. Gersch of Tryon and Evian-les-Bains, France, died Jan. 13, 2013 in the Hopitaux de Leman at Thonon-les-Bains. Mr. Gersch was born May 6, 1935 at Glatz, Silesia, then in Germany and now in Poland. His given name was after the title character of the opera “Guntram” by composer Richard Strauss, whose son he met in later life. During the war his family, who owned food and hotel businesses, took refuge at their mountain inn by the Czech border. In 1946 they were expelled by Soviet forces, with one suitcase per person at short notice, to West Germany where as refugees they were sheltered in a farmer’s barn. Guntram studied professional cooking and hotel work at Frankfurt-am-Main from 1951 through 1954, then worked his first job abroad in Honduras at a private club in Tegucigalpa in 1955. There he prepared a banquet for visiting guest Mrs. Richard Nixon. The next year he immigrated to Florida, worked at Toy Town resort in Winchendon, Mass. and settled in Chicago earning his living in the hospitality industry. In the early 1960s he also began seriously making and collecting fine art, studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. His first one-man show was at Counterpoint Gallery in 1967. His early oeuvre, grotesque self-portraiture derived from childhood memories of war, was soon replaced by pure abstraction, the style for which Gersch became known as a professional artist. His first foreign exhibition was in Beirut, Lebanon at American University in 1973. The next year his artwork was featured by Bonouche Gallery in Bahrain. He went on to exhibit at Gallery Kroner in Zurich, Switzerland and in Germany, Belgium, England and Los Angeles. In 1992 Lloyd Shin Gallery in Chicago began representing

Gersch’s art, publishing an illustrated essay by famed critic Robert C. Morgan extolling his Modernist mixed-media works on paper. G e r s c h t r a v e l e d w i d e l y, backpacking in the Middle East, Cyprus, Turkey and Greece. During the 1980s he relocated to the Door Peninsula, Wisc., a magnet for artists. Summers in Europe he resided at Evian-lesBains on Lake Geneva. In 1998, together with longtime partner Stanley Lee Brightwell, who died in 2010, Gersch acquired the Modernist house and studio “Serendipity” in Tryon, formerly owned by painter Robert Jordan, for their winter home. The Upstairs Artspace exhibited his first Tryon show in 2004 and a major retrospective “Guntram Gersch: Forty Years” in spring 2007. That autumn Red Clover Gallery in Landrum, S.C. mounted a show of his mixed-media titled “Symphony in Form” as well as his last one-man show “Nine Dips, Two Trips and a Quad” of new work in 2008. His art was also shown in Spartanburg and at Tryon Fine Arts Center. He hosted the docents of Asheville Art Museum to a tour of his studio, where he also welcomed collectors. Gersch had keen interests in classical music, fine cuisine, and perpetuating the Germanic cultural history of Silesia. He is survived by a sister and other relatives in Germany. No local services are planned.

Capturing rain water for home use: A growing good idea There are several benefits to using a rain barrel at home or at work. You can save water by leaving the hose off, you can save money and slow stormwater runoff. And by doing this, you can help prevent pollution by lowering the stress on local streams. At its simplest, a rain barrel is a container with openings, placed outdoors under spots where water pours off the roof of commercial or residential construction. Most people place the barrel under a drain spout and in a location that is accessible to the garden. You then connect a garden hose to the barrel’s faucet. Runoff water is soft water devoid of chlorine, fluoride and other chemicals and is great for the garden and indoor uses, and with exact and proper filtration and city testing, rain water can even be considered for drinking. Typically the container is a 55-gallon plastic drum that can

last for decades. Barrels must be food-grade and not barrels that have contained any kinds of chemical. Barrels must be effectively “closed-systems” to prevent mosquito breeding or invasion from other species and animals. A 100-square-foot yard could use several barrels. Once your barrels are full you can go weeks without rain and never have to turn the hose on. Clean and rinse your barrels once a year and make sure to empty them in the winter so they don’t freeze or explode from ice build-up. Cindy Bosien, creator and designer of Garden Saviour Rain Barrels, knows that rain barrels

are not only good for the garden, lawn and street trees but by temporarily holding off stormwater runoff, they reduce overflow to creeks and rivers and decrease pollution. “Rainwater can improve the health of your gardens because of the lack of chemicals. Wash your hair and clothing in it and enjoy natural softening-effects. After all it’s what people once depended on and wild flora and fauna thrives on,” she reminds us. Part of her mission in building and installing rain barrels, is to demonstrate that even in drought we probably are, as a county, receiving enough water for our needs and to share, if we were collectively working to capture it. Cindy has created an oasis on her acreage surrounding her old farm house on the edge of the Polk County line where she has lived and raised her family for 30 years. She works tirelessly to connect

water issues to people’s awareness and people to nature through water conservation. She also designs drought-tolerant landscapes and water features, and teaches the methods and importance in building habitat for all living creatures, especially pollinators of our food. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the average American uses between 80 – 100 gallons of water a day. The average 8.2-minute shower uses 20 gallons of water. We turn on outdoor faucets and hoses almost unaware, when we can be capturing the majority of this use, freely, from our skies. Conserving resources is a growing good idea as we must choose to become more environmentally aware. For information on readymade rain barrels that offer installation services, contact Cindy Bosien of Polk County’s Garden Saviour RainBarrels at bohog3@ hotmail.com.

Polk girls beat Hendersonville, continue win streak by Fulton Hampton

The Polk County girls held Hendersonville to just 2 points in the first quarter and never allowed more than 8 points in a quarter on their way to a 61-24 victory. One might assume the Lady Wolverines were hitting on all cylinders. Defensively Polk played extremely well, with their trapping pressure defense working to perfection all night. The defense resulted in 16 steals and probably forced just as many other turnovers (throwing the ball away, walking

calls, etc.) However, offensively Polk only shot 22 percent in the first half; which was good enough for a 25 – 10 halftime lead. They did improve their shooting percentage considerably in the second half scoring 24 points in the third quarter. “It was kind of a tale of two games. In the first half we shot 22 percent and in the second we shot 38 percent,” Coach Craig Culbreth said. “We played pretty much the same both halves but that was the difference in the game. We (also) had a ton of steals.”

Another key to the win was that the normally undersized Polk found itself in an unusual position of having a height advantage. Coach Culbreth almost in disbelief said, “We never had this before…. but we had a big height advantage. It’s very seldom we have a height advantage but we got a lot of rebounds (52) and got the ball down the floor (quickly).” Katie Ruff led Polk with 13 points and 8 rebounds and Savannah Deaver had 8 points and led the team in rebounds with 11. Amber

Lynch added 8 points as Polk had 10 players score in the contest. Game Stats Polk 13; 12; 24; 12 = 61 Hendersonville 2; 8; 8; 6 = 24 Aaliyah Waddell had 17 points and Emoree Rasheed had five for the Lady Bearcats (0-13, 0-7 WHC) Polk is now 9-8 overall, 3-4 in WHC conference play and face Madison away tonight. This will be the second meeting of the season with Polk losing the first game 57-45.

Wolverines unable to hold off Hendersonville offensive run by Fulton Hampton

Polk County held their own within the Western Highland Conference leading the Hendersonville Bearcats for most of the first two quarters of their game

Friday, Jan. 18. The game plan seemed to be working with Polk only down 9 points at halftime 38 -29. The Wolverines even cut the lead to 7 points early in the third quarter.

But Hendersonville then went on one of its infamous “runs” scoring a season-high 36 points in the third quarter. That drive propelled them to a 97-51 win. In describing the third quarter

scoring binge Coach Josh McEntire explained, “They hit some really tough shots, we were down by 7 and then the next three pos(Continued on page 17)

sessions they hit jump shots with people in their face. (They had) two 3-pointers and a long two. Then during our possessions we missed two lay-ups and two free throws. We missed easy shots and they hit tough shots and that’s what good teams do.” Although disappointed with the outcome, Coach McEntire said he was overall pleased with the effort. “We really played hard for the most part. In that third quarter there was no answer, we tried different players, different things to do against them, they just kept hitting shots; guarded shots,” he said. “The one thing we did not do well was block out and that cost us too. Because when they did miss they had somebody to

Jamal Tanner had 8 points, seven assists and three steals and Alec Philpott had 9 points. Polk (7-10, 3-4 WHC) will travel to Madison tonight, Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Teens build cardboard village, awareness of homelessness Landrum Columnist by Anne Regan

Driving past the First Baptist Church of Landrum, Sunday evening, you would have seen the construction of a cardboard village on the front lawn. The teens of the church decided to do a blanket collection for the homeless. Associate Pastor Mark Bishop wanted to take it a step further. “From this idea it grew into a community awareness project,” he said. Team leaders Lindsay Wilson, 16, Jordan Bishop, 15, and Nathan Scoggins, 15, all students at Landrum High School, coordinated this big undertaking. With the enthusiasm only teenagers can generate this effort involved months of planning. Creating and delivering posters, getting huge cartons from Carruth Furniture, for housing, also designing ‘THANK YOU FOR DONATING’ cards with a candy Lifesaver attached took a lot of effort. From 4 p.m. Sunday to 8 a.m. Monday, the teens simulated what its like to be homeless.

“We’re sleeping in the boxes, keeping warm with blankets, building fires in 55 gallon drums and eating a supper of soup and water,” said Jordan Bishop. The participating teens agreed to only have a cell phone for emergencies no other “tech stuff” said Lindsay Wilson. Attending FBCL on Sunday for the first time, Michael Groce offered to play the guitar. Monday morning they will go by church bus to the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen to deliver a blanket to each homeless person. Youth counselor Warren Ashmore said, “When contacting the soup kitchen about our project they told me this was a first. Getting teens not just to deliver blankets, but to hand them out is great.” “Tonight is just one night for us, but this is all some of the homeless know,” Mark Bishop said. “What we don’t think about in our lives tomorrow you could very well keep someone alive.” Student ministry members hope to make this an annual event. The church office will continue to accept items until the end of January. Contact the office at 864-457-4118.
