Have you ever wondered about the name of the mountain on the south side of I-26 as you reach the top of the Saluda grade?

“It looks sort of like Chocolate Drop except that it still has trees on it and there is no erosion; no mud sliding down the side of the steep, bare slopes,” said Betsy Burdett, SCLT president.

The mountain is named Round Mountain, the site of the Revolutionary War Battle of Round Mountain. The Polk County Board of Commissioners created the task force on Jan. 7 following the Newtown, Ct. shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December.

The task force’s first meeting was held Wednesday, Jan. 23 and consisted of Polk County School Superintendent Bill Miller, Polk County School Board Chair Geoff Tennant, Polk County Sheriff Donald Hill, interim Polk County Manager Marche Pittman, Columbus Police Chief Chris Beddingfield, Saluda Police Chief James Cantrell, Tryon Police Chief Jeff Arrowood, N.C. If you start looking for Round Mountain as you travel around Polk County and the South Carolina upstate, you will find that you can see Round Mountain from Green Creek, Landrum, Fox Mountain, Saluda and Tryon.

Round Mountain is the newest SCLT property and is currently being reviewed by the state to be put under a forest management plan. According to SCLT’s website, Pam Torlina (Pacolet Area Conservency land protection specialist) has agreed to do a search for endangered and threatened species, accompanied

by Dean Campbell, a botanist who is doing a study of Polk County for the N.C. Heritage Trust.

risks are factors in Polk County.

The task force agreed that a risk assessment of all school facilities is needed first and scheduled to conduct those assessments at 10 school facilities on Feb. 13, Feb. 14 and Feb. 15.

The facilities that will be assessed include Polk County High School, Polk County Middle School, Polk Central Elementary School, Saluda Elementary School, Sunny View Elementary School, Tryon Elementary School, Forbes Preschool, the Virtual College, the alternative school and Stearns.

Edwards said the task force will need to look at current policies at each school and what the school board can do to strengthen or tighten up the policies. Tennant and Miller said all school staff has identification cards with the high school being strict about wearing them and the elementary schools may not be as strict.

“Locking down schools can become a very complicated issue when you are trying to have an open school,” Miller said.

Beddingfield said it’s going to be a magic line that needs to be drawn because there’s one extreme where you have schools locked down with a gate like a prison and another extreme to be wide open. He said most law enforcement officers will tend to think that line should be tighter on security.

Miller said he’s for nothing and he’s against nothing. He said he’s been working for schools for 25 to 30 years and watched America spend money even if they don’t know what to do.

“That’s a complicated problem,” Miller said. “There’s probably not a solution. Just doing something to say we did it is not a good answer.”

He added that the others wouldn’t believe how many calls and emails he’s received from companies trying to take advantage of the situation to

Tennant said the board could come up with all kinds of recommendations but it’s Pittman who will have to go out and find the money.

“I don’t think there’s a person on this board whose goal isn’t to make kids safe at school,” Tennant said.

He agreed with Miller saying as a society people normally take piles of money and throw it at problems.

“That might give people a false sense that we’ve done something important and it might blow up in our face,” Tennant said.

The task force agreed that each school’s risks are going to be different.

Miller mentioned how difficult some of Polk County’s schools are to secure due to the layouts, particularly Tryon and Polk Central because of multiple buildings and multiple entrances.

Miller said people talk about how an officer can simply man the door, but what people don’t understand is that most schools have four doors. There’s not one place to stand, he said.

The task force agreed that input is needed from teachers and individual school administrators regarding what each school thinks their top security risks are.

Miller said another thing the task force may need to consider is that the most dangerous time in Polk County School activities is not during the school day but during athletic events.

“There’s 5,000 people at a football game on a Friday night and nobody’s searched,” Miller said. “That’s the most dangerous thing happening in Polk County.”

Miller also said people think that school runs from 8 a.m. to 3

p.m. and asked if the group was going to discuss after school and summer school.

“People think school runs from 8 to 3, but it’s really from 8 to 6,” Miller said.

The consensus was that the task force will concentrate on securing facilities and agreed on the 10 facilities to create a risk assessment.

The group decided to create the risk assessment within 60 days, or by the end of March. The timing works out with the school system currently working on a strategic plan, so the task force agreed to work hand-in-hand with the plan, particularly with the public input portion of the school’s plan.

Miller said originally the strategic plan was not going to include security measures but after the December shooting in Connecticut, school officials decided to make security part of that plan.

The school’s strategic plan will also involve surveys.

Following the risk assessment of the school facilities, the task force said it would like to talk to different groups for input, including mental health officials, the Polk County Department of Social Services, school principals and local state representatives.

In the meantime, task force members are going to research statistical information regarding security issues at schools, speak with other law enforcement and school districts regarding what they may be doing that is working and keeping up to date with what state and federal officials are implementing, especially in terms of funding.

The next task force meeting is scheduled for Feb. 21.

Foothills Humane Society receives Petco Foundation grant Petco Foundation recently awarded a $10,000 grant to Foothills Humane Society (FHS) to support the organization’s spay-neuter programs.

This generous funding will sponsor at least 232 spayneuter surgeries in the coming year. FHS estimates its average cost of spay-neutering at $43 per animal. FHS will perform monthly audits to monitor its performance using these grant funds. These audits will follow the prescribed grant guidelines.

The measured outcomes will be reported to the FHS Board of Directors and the Petco Foundation.

Foothills Humane Society spay-neuter programs are available for all residents of our service area that need financial assistance for this purpose.

Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry (Outreach) was recently awarded a Board Initiative Grant in the amount of $16,000 from the Polk County Community Foundation.

Groundhog Day Party to benefit Steps to HOPE

On Saturday, Feb. 2 landscape and portrait artist Richard C. Baker will host a benefit for Steps to HOPE – the first annual Groundhog Day Party – at the Richard C. Baker Studio from 6 - 9 p.m. Wine, light hors d’oeuvres and sweets will be served. Admission is free and open to the public, with a requested donation to Steps to HOPE, Polk County’s domestic violence and sexual assault prevention and treatment center. National Pizza Day

Laurel Hurst residents enjoy National Pizza Day by doing what else; eating pizza of course. Residents had a choice of pepperoni, cheese or veggie and dessert was a yummy cupcake. One resident also researched to find out who invented pizza. Her Internet search found that no one really knows who invented pizza, but sources said that American style pizza was invented in America, Italian style pizza was invented in Italy and Greek style pizza was invented in Greece. TLT’s ‘9 to 5 the Musical’ cast announcement Tryon Little Theater is preparing to rock the corporate world in February when “9 to 5: the Musical” kicks off a two weekend run at the Tryon Fine Arts Center.

A cast of thousands (well… tens, anyway), directed by Chris Tinkler with musical direction

by Lena Duncan, is preparing to dazzle with that perfect combination of story, song and dance laced with just a touch of revenge. And who doesn’t love a musical comedy with a recipe like that one?

Based on the 1980 hit movie “9 to 5” starring Dolly Parton, Lilly Tomlin and Jane Fonda, the musical version opened on Broadway in 2009 where it received 15 Drama Desk Award nominations and four Tony Award nominations.

TLT’s own corporate America is led by Debbie Craig Archer, Lori C. Lee and Hollie Swofford

in the lead roles of Violet, Doralee and Judy, three unlikely friends who conspire to take control of their company and learn there’s nothing they can’t do – even in a man’s world.

Paul Adams plays the deliciously evil Mr. Franklin Hart, Jr. (a boss that only a mother could love). The large and talented supporting cast includes Helen Byrd, Scott Wadell, Price Marshall, Holly Horton, Petra Harrelson, Ed Harrelson, Monica Jones, Kim Nelson, Tij D’Oyen, Rody Dayvault, Henry Bright, Gracie Moser, Chelsea McCoyle, Brad Peterson and Peter Eisenbrown.

Did you know that Green Creek was once the most populated township in Polk County?

In 1910, 1,962 people lived in our township, but 1,664 people lived in the Tryon township that year.

I was surprised to learn the Town of Tryon had 700 citizens that year, and the Town of Columbus had only a population of 122. The total population of Polk County was 7,640 in 1910.

Question: Does anyone have a picture of NC Senator Elbert (nickname Eb) Westbrook, and/or the general store the he operated in Sandy Plains during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s? Also, we would like to know if Sen. Westbrook was the only state senator from Polk County to represent us in Raleigh.
