interviewing Williamson. “We anticipate it’s going to help improve tourism,” Williamson said. Williamson said he discussed with UNC-TV the history of the flags displayed and the museum’s history dating back to its founder, the late George Scofield. Williamson said he does not yet know when the museum will be featured on the television show, but said he will be told before it airs. The Polk County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution on Jan. 7 in support of the House of Flags museum being featured on UNC-TV’s North Carolina Now, which highlights interesting places in the state. “WHEREAS, the purpose of the House of Flags Museum is to properly display a unique and comprehensive historical collection of over 300 United States, military, state and international flags, including all 27 full-size official U.S. flags from 1776 to 1960, and to provide educational experiences to elementary school children, high school students and adults of all ages,” states the county’s resolution; “and WHEREAS, every weeknight UNCTV’s North Carolina Now highlights the most interesting places in the state, covering a wide array of topics from the mountains to the coast; and WHEREAS, the House of Flags invites North Carolina Now to feature this unique facility, located in Columbus, NC, on one of its future television shows.” The resolution, along with emails from House of Flags representatives, was part of the House of Flags’ recent effort to get featured on the network. Williamson said with just the publicity the Tryon Daily Bulletin gives, the museum sees visitors from around the region. In October 2012 the museum served as host to three

Williamson said he’s visited several national museums and people there can’t believe the House of Flags was accomplished with no public funding. flags from President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s administration. That three-day exhibit brought in almost 800 visitors to Columbus. Williamson said Internet publicity from such events draws numerous groups to view the national treasures inside the museum. He said in 2007, when the museum became incorporated, the House of Flags would get the first 10 headlines within an Internet search and now it’s the first 20 pages. Williamson said he’s visited several national museums and people there can’t believe the House of Flags was accomplished with no public funding. “They are amazed,” he said, “and I’m appreciative.” Located in downtown Columbus adjacent to the Veterans Park, the House of Flags Museum was founded on Sept. 8, 2001 by Scofield and VFW Post 9116, Columbus. The museum is the only House of Flags museum in the nation and its purpose is to teach history based on flags. The original House of Flags Museum was located at the former Green Creek School gymnasium and a major fundraising campaign moved the museum to the former Columbus Fire Hall, donated to the House of Flags by Polk County and renovations completed through fundraising and grants. The new museum opened on Nov. 11, 2011 with fundraising ongoing to complete the second floor. For more information about the House of Flags or to donate to the fundraising effort, visit www.houseofflags.org. Saluda purchases new weapons for police department by Mark Schmerling

Funds derived from a local drug bust have saved Saluda residents almost $2,000 and are being used toward the purchase of rifles for the Saluda Police Department. At their Jan. 14 meeting, Saluda City Council members voted unanimously to use $1,950 from a combination drug bust two years ago toward the purchase of three Colt AR-15 semi-automatic .223 Remington caliber patrol

rifles. These rifles will be carried in the department’s patrol cars, said Saluda Police Chief James L. Cantrell. They are the same make, model and caliber as those rifles used by the Columbus and Tryon police departments, and by the county. The new rifles, which are on order, will provide uniformity with respect to model and caliber. Cantrell said that the weapons would replace shotguns now car-

ried by officers on patrol. “Most departments are going away from shotguns,” Cantrell said, and are opting to carry rifles. The longer-range capabilities of these rifles over shotguns is a big reason, he added. These rifles, capable of practical accuracy to at least 200 yards, can be safer for bystanders in shootouts, and can also help officers match the firepower of criminals. Cantrell did not know when his department would re-

ceive the weapons. According to Saluda City Administrator Erny Williams, city auditors explained the the drug bust funds, of which Saluda’s share was $1,950, can only be spent on certain kinds of items, and that the funds should not be carried from year to year. Councilman Johnnie Kinard, who is in charge of the city’s public safety, made a motion to spend the city’s share on the rifles.

Rizzo stepping up Landrum police enforcement Landrum Columnist by Anne Regan

The Landrum Police Department recently added Rizzo, a second Belgian Malinois to its canine unit. This breed has intelligence, drive and rapid learning ability and will not be happy unless it has a job to do. Landrum Chief of Police Tim Edgens said the force is glad to work with its new K9 member. “It’s important to have a good match between the handler and the dog or it just not successful,” Edgens said. Rizzo’s handler is patrolman Jeff Duncan. Continual training is required by both Duncan and Rizzo to stay certified. “Since June 2012 Rizzo and I have logged in over 300 hours,” Duncan said. Diligent records must be kept to show, if necessary, for court cases. Duncan has the responsibility of Rizzo 24 hours, seven days a week. When not on duty Rizzo has a kennel at Duncan’s home, in Holly Springs. At least one day a week they are training together and exercising every day. Duncan’s

three children, ages 13, 11 and 9 “understand there’s a fine line between being a pet and a police dog,” Duncan said. Growing up in Holly Springs, Duncan has been involved with his community via the volunteer fire department for more than 10 years. He now serves as a lieutenant. While attending Holly Springs’ Motlow Creek Elementary School, he remembers when

the Spartanburg Sheriffs Office had a program called D.A.R.E, (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). A police spokesman would periodically come to school to talk with the students. This program had a profound effect on Duncan, leading him to seek work in law enforcement. “In my career I want to keep drugs off the street and being a K-9 handler is another tool to get

As part of a 14-member board, Eckert will serve a three-year term. TCC President and CEO David Stone said he was happy to have Eckert on the board again; she previously served in the early 1990s. “I am excited about having Jean come back on the board to provide leadership in these interesting times for hospice and pal-

liative care services,” Stone said. With offices in Cary, N.C. and Columbia, S.C., TCC began in 1977 and is a two-state association representing more than 100 hospice providers in North and South Carolina. The organization provides support to local hospice programs through technical assistance, education, and advocacy in the state legislatures, state regulatory bodies and Congress. Hospice care is currently available in each of the 146 counties in North and South Carolina. “I am happy to lend my energy and experience as a 30-year hospice worker,” said Eckert, “to

there,” he said. He said he would also like to see the D.A.R.E program in schools again. Since June, Rizzo has successfully done her job. She’s a valuable and important part to Landrum’s law enforcement, Duncan said. “When fully trained she will be the only tracking canine in Spartanburg County town units,” Duncan said.

Letter to the Editor

How archaic

To the editor: I was shocked when I read the Bulletin Jan. 23 that our commissioners approved a resolution in favor of legal trapping of furbearers in Polk County. How archaic is that? It never ceases to amaze me how quickly some humans wish to exterminate our beautiful wildlife while others do everything possible to protect and care for them. Let us not forget, we live in the “Bible Belt.” These are God’s creatures and we, as humans, are supposed to protect them all. - Jeanette Larson, Columbus

Polk comes close in second half versus Mountain Heritage by Fulton Hampton

With Polk down 36-20 to Mountain Heritage at halftime Thursday, Jan. 24 it looked as if the Lady Wolverines were headed for a lopsided loss. But they came back with a great effort and cut the lead to single digits. The final score ended at 66-59, but if there was ever a case to call a game a moral victory this one would classify. “We started out slow and only scored 20 points in the first half,” said Coach Craig Culbreth. “The good thing was; we did not quit and we outscored them by nine points in the second half. We came back and made a ballgame out of it. We made a great run; we were down by 20 and I think we got it down to 6 at one time.” Mountain Heritage had a height advantage with several of their players. This allowed them to get several easy baskets and particularly “second chance baskets,” where they missed their initial shot but got the rebound and put it back from close range. “Of course it hurt not having Savannah (Deaver out due to

injury) especially for rebounds. They are a good team; they have only lost one game (18-1). (That’s) a pretty good team and we hung with them. (It shows) we are getting better,” Culbreth said. Coach Culbreth was optimistic about the Lady Wolverines’ next game against Mitchell, which they lost to previously by only 6 points, 50-44 at home. “Mitchell will be a big game for us, they beat us the first time, but we hope to get them this time, we are playing much better ball right now,” he said. Mountain Heritage pulls out win late in fourth quarter by Fulton Hampton

Polk County men’s basketball led at halftime 24-19 and took a 27-26 lead into the fourth quarter, but was outscored 17-8 in the fourth resulting in a disappointing 43-35 loss. The Mountain Heritage Cougars’ height advantage finally became a factor as they out re-

bounded Polk in the later stages of the game. It was actually one of the best games Polk has played all year, the effort and intensity was definitely there throughout the game. “I feel like we played our best defensive game; we blocked out, we communicated well, we got back on defense and we moved our

feet,” Coach Josh McEntire said. “We did some really good things on defense. I was proud of the way we fought and played against a team with superior size and kept them off the offensive backboards.” However, mental mistakes and poor execution down the stretch prevents a team from grabbing the win in big games. Once Mountain

Heritage got the lead Polk seemed to rush the ball up the court and had several turnovers. “On offense we did not take great shots at times, but they frustrated us with their zone and we could not get shots to fall,” McEntire said. “In the end they just

caught a few more breaks than we did. They made some free throws when they needed to and made plays when they needed them. LaurelHurst visits Overmountain Winery

Residents at Laurel Hurst retirement community recently visited Overmountain Vineyards, a Polk County winery off Sandy Plains Road. The group sampled five different wines including a Chardonnay, Rose and a sweet Port. After their wine sampling, they had a picnic lunch and asked questions about the winery. Frank Lilly, owner, explained why oak barrels are like a spice and give a different flavor to wine. He no longer uses oak barrels so that Overmountain wine tastes more like the true grape. The residents also drank out of stemless wine glasses, which they got to keep as a souvenir. Left: Frank Lilly explains about wine. Right: Kate Liebfried, Jean Gregonis and Vicki Liebfried. Memorials may be made to the Philip L. “Buck” Preston Scholarship Fund, c/o Polk County Schools, 125 E. Mills Street, Columbus, N.C. 28722, Attn: Aaron Greene. An on-line guest register may be signed at www.mcfarlandfuneralchapel.com

‘Red Tail Hawks’ by Preston I’ve named our red tails Gertrude and Claudius. Their twin chicks, Hamlet and Hamlet Seem more to the point. I hear them scoring Squirrels in the trees. They grow and swoop In impossibly majestic arcs: To hell with rodent prayers. I age, I watch the woods, And pray for rescue: A death as sudden As a visit from a prince, One announced And silent, Royal feathers Carving air, Asking nothing In their finality. - poem by Philip L. “Buck” Preston

Polk youth baseball and softball signups

Don Sain from Mountain Valley Baptist Church is another gentleman who enjoys cooking and serving delicious free Friday lunch at the Polk Baptist Association (PBA) Care Kitchen. Sain is an excellent cook, whipping up lots of W.I.T. (whatever it takes) to produce huge pots of dry beans, chicken soup or spaghetti. One of our elderly guests said that Sain’s turkey stew was the best she’d ever had. Sain meets the challenge each week much more easily than some of the lady cooks – nothing is too difficult for him when it comes to food preparation. For instance, under the supervi-

sion of his wife, Mary Ann, Sain cooked an entire Thanksgiving dinner for his shift at Mohawk Industries as well as three turkeys for the Care Kitchen that week. Those in this area who would like to taste Mr. Sain’s creations are welcome to drop by the Care Kitchen located at 208 Blanton Street, Columbus in the lower level of PBA. Meals are served 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. every Friday. Often, area workers who don’t want to eat fast foods every day will come to the facility and make a donation for their meal. You just never know what’s cooking there, and sometimes the Mountain Val-

ley guys provide live music during the meal. All are welcome to come and bring a friend. Coats and sweaters are available at no cost to those in need. This week, a dozen handcrafted hats and scarves arrived for our guests during this cold weather. Breads and pastries are often distributed due to the generosity of area bakers. The Care Kitchen Team announced this week that in the future, the kitchen would operate on the same schedule as the local school system during inclement weather. - article submitted by Ann Carswell
