anglers and protect the native trout population. “This is one of the best trout rivers there is, but it’s just been overfished,” said Trout Unlimited volunteer Dave Maxwell. Maxwell went fly-fishing for the first time on the Green River with his father when he was 12 years old. He and other volunteers congregated at the Fishtop put-in off Green River Cove Road to assist NCWRC officials for the first of three delayed harvest stocking dates. Through the stocking day the commission released buckets full of brook, brown and rainbow trout into the mountain water. Polk County wildlife resources officer Toby Jenkins said the stocking days are essential to keeping the population strong. “It allows people to go to the river and fish with a bet-

ter chance of catching fish,” Jenkins said. “Once the river temperatures get really warm you get a higher mortality rate. If we didn’t stock [the river] you wouldn’t catch any fish.” Chris Ellis is vice president of the Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited. He said releasing the sterile, non-native trout into the waters allows there to be ample fish available to anglers but prevents native fish from being gleaned. “Coldwater conservation is important to our environment in general. If we make sure the waters provide a suitable environment for trout then you’ve improved water quality for everything around from bugs to even humans,” Ellis said. Mountain waters that support trout and are open to public fishing are designated as “Public Mountain Trout Waters” by the commission. Anglers interested in fishing these waters (Continued on page 4)

Council approved a resolution setting a public hearing for its April meeting contingent on the town manager contacting both parties to ensure they will pay associated costs for the closure. The costs would include advertising and recording fees. Council also discussed adding road closure requests to its fee schedule as well as requests for annexation. The Days Inn owner also requested that Columbus take over ownership and maintenance of the road entering the hotel. Days Inn owner Pete Bhakta requested that Columbus take over the access road, which also

Columbus Town Manager Jonathan Kanipe said the road is very short, less than ¼ mile and would not provide a significant increase in funding to the town’s street program through the Powell Bill program. Kanipe also said a cursory look revealed that the road is currently in need of significant repairs, including, but not limited to asphalt resurfacing. Kanipe said town staff did not recommend taking ownership of the street. Councilman Ricky McCallister said the only thing the town is going to pick up is repairing the street when it needs repaired. Councilwoman Margaret Metcalf said she doesn’t know how the road would benefit the town in anyway. No council member made a motion to take over the road, so council essentially denied the request.

evidencing said indebtedness having directed that the Deed of Trust be foreclosed, the undersigned Substitute Trustee will offer for sale at the courthouse door in the City of Columbus, Polk County, North Carolina, or the customary location designated for foreclosure sales, at 3:30 PM on March 12, 2013 and will sell to the highest bidder for cash the following real estate situated in the Township of Columbus, in the County of Polk, North Carolina, and being more particularly described as follows: Being all of Lot 14, containing 0.81 acre, more or less, as shown and delineated upon a plat entitled "Woody's Estates", Columbus Twp., Polk Co., No. Car., dated October 8, 1991, and prepared by Butler Associates, Reg. Land Surveyor, Tryon, N.C., which plat is duly recorded in Card File B, Page 532, in the Office of the Register of Deeds for Polk County, North Carolina. Together with improvements located thereon; said property being located at 100 Woody Circle, Tryon, North Carolina.

Should the property be purchased by a third party, that party must pay the excise tax, as well as the court costs of Forty-Five Cents ($0.45) per One Hundred Dollars ($100.00) required by NCGS §7A-308(a)(1). The property to be offered pursuant to this notice of sale is being offered for sale, transfer and conveyance “AS IS, WHERE IS.” Neither the Trustee nor the holder of the note secured by the deed of trust/security agreement, or both, being foreclosed, nor the officers, directors, attorneys, employees, agents or authorized representative of either the Trustee or the holder of the note make any representation or warranty relating to the title or any physical, environmental, health or safety conditions existing in, on, at or relating to the property being offered for sale, and any and all responsibilities or liabilities arising out of or in any way relating to any such condition expressly are disclaimed. Also, this property is being sold subject to all taxes, special assessments, and prior liens or encumbrances of record and any recorded releases. Said property is also being sold subject to applicable Federal and State laws. A cash deposit or cashier's check (no personal checks) of five percent (5%) of the purchase price, or seven hundred fifty dollars ($750.00), whichever is greater, will be required at the time of the sale. Reflecting on past years of ‘ag-tivism’ in Polk County Recently, I was compelled to reflect on the last few years of my “ag-tivism” in Polk County and the foothills region in general. As I did I stumbled upon the 2010 yearlong report I wrote that completed our goals at the Mill Spring Agricultural Center, then a kudzu covered abandoned school house in the heart of a quiet little unassuming region of the county called Mill Spring. There we struggled and rejoiced in the massive task ahead of us and in the sparks of community agtivism that lit up our paths along the way: Lynn Sprague, Sandra Reid, Vaughn Loeffler, Americorp volunteers like Joseph Burdett, Ian Jensen and Moira McCormick; Soil and Water board members and co-operative extension staffers led by John Vining were beginning pioneers. Liz Malloy and Betsy Burdette woke up with the roosters to help host Friends of Ag Breakfasts and then a new host of Americorp members like Patrick McClendon and Kacy Spooner came to the team. I don’t mean to leave any names out, but these are the ones that come quickly to mind. We knew we had to build community awareness and support to show an involved leverage before any grant monies came flowing in to us. After weeks and months those dreams became reality. We had big dreams that; if I were to take a measuring stick to what’s actually happening out there today, we are within inches of the initial plan. So just for kicks, over the next few weeks I will share in this column the transcript of that report. I believe you

Our farm store development is in full swing with research being conducted on how to structure commissions, vendor volunteer time in the store, product types and placements, equipment and fixture needs, and the accounting system for the commerce conducted. We furthered along promotional materials like our new brochure, sent press releases to the local paper and continued placing vendors in the store and farm connections to local restaurants. We launched our brand new website with our new logo and began design on the PolkFresh Farm store signage and product labels. We had a second large volunteer day to connect and collaborate different private individuals, businesses, civic groups and government agencies, which numbered between 30 and 40. The day was catered by a local foods buffet. We’ve also attended a marketing opportunities for farmers’ conference and spent the day networking with the WNC market in terms of restaurants, distribution centers and grocers.

that much in the realm of meaning and value is not fixed, but paradoxical. Good values clash. Different meanings have ultimate worth. The mature seeker begins to understand this. Faith is good but so is reason. Belief is good but so is doubt. Contemplation is good but so is action. Achievement is good but so is

charity and emptying oneself. Easter might be the ultimate paradox. It challenges us with death but also with renewed life. A mature person must find his or her way through the thickets of extremes, confronting paradoxical claims to a place of balance. The Spring
