Rich storytelling, music and puppets at Super Saturday Everyone loves a good story, all the more when music, puppets and poetry are interwoven to enrich the tale. Enter Timmy Abell and his wife, Susana, to delight audiences at the 35th annual Super Saturday March 16. Since 2005, Timmy has been joined by Susana and her puppets – bilingual puppets, mind you – in family concerts and schools throughout the Southeast. Timmy brings with them his collection of rare musical instruments including a hammered dulcimer, English concertina, bowed psaltery, lap dulcimer, and penny whistle along with his guitar and banjo, many of which become part of his tall tales, fairy tales, adventure stories, and mountain Jack Tales. For more than 30 years Timmy has celebrated both the historical
and living qualities of American, Appalachian, International, and original folk music. He has performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the National Theater in Washington D.C., at the JFK Library in Boston, at Piccolo Spoleto in Charleston, the Peace Center in Greenville, and venues across the country. North Carolina Public Television even broadcast a one hour special, “Timmy and Friends.” Ti m m y a n d S u s a n a b i l l themselves as “Silver Trout Arts: Smart Arts for Cool Kids” . . . clearly perfect for Super Saturday. They will perform in the Congregational Church at 10:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. For ticket information, go to tryonsupersaturday.com. - article submitted by Connie Clark

a call at 6:26 p.m. Friday night, March 8 from 532 Hwy. 14 West, Landrum saying someone was trying to break into the home. W h e n t h e h o m e o w n e r, Jonathan Wofford, called back a second time it was to inform authorities the suspect, who has
been identified as Dakota Hester, had kicked in the door, and he (the homeowner) had shot Hester multiple times. Hester was airlifted to Spartanburg Regional Medical center, where he remains in the hospital in critical condition. Spartanburg County officials said if he survives and improves enough to be released from the hospital, he would be charged with
burglary and criminal domestic violence. Sheriff’s officers discovered Hester came to the house because his wife was inside with Wofford. The suspect kicked in the front door to the residence and assaulted his wife by grabbing her around the throat and pushing her against the wall, according to reports. The suspect then went upstairs where the homeowner

decision. He asked to table the vote to do further research. The positions will be split into two, with the EMS director and a combined emergency management/fire marshal position. Sandra Halford currently does all duties, with the county planning for her to resume one of the two positions. Commissioner Keith Holbert said the split is being made for the welfare of the county. Interim Polk County Manager Marche Pittman said the decision was made because the duties are becoming too overwhelming for one person. He said fire marshal duties are becoming so much more important in the county and so are emergency management duties. “As good of a job as Halford has done (handling all three positions), it’s becoming overwhelming for one person to handle,” Pittman said. The EMS director manages the EMS department including personnel, equipment, legal issues, developing relationships and contracts with other emergency medical and rescue providers, developing and managing the EMS budget and developing long range plans for the department, according to the county’s job description. The EMS director also supervises and provides basic life support at the paramedic level. The emergency management director/fire marshal will plan, organize and coordinate the
had retreated behind his locked bedroom door. Information from the sheriff’s office said Hester kicked in that door as well, which is when Wofford shot him. T h e Vi o l e n t C r i m e investigators on the scene have consulted with the Solicitor’s Office, who has stated it appears Wofford was within his rights to defend himself, so Wofford will not be charged.

emergency management and fire marshal activities, response to hazardous materials incidents, weather emergency response or other disaster planning and response for the county. Work involves coordination with emergency service providers, state agencies and local emergency support departments and agencies. The emergency management director will develop plans for preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery of all types of man-made or natural disasters, including national security, nuclear plant, weather, hazardous material spills and others, according to the county’s job description. The emergency management director/fire marshal will also review plans for commercial permits and applications, conduct periodic fire and safety inspections and provide fire prevention education and assist in developing emergency action procedures for county agencies and businesses. The split will likely mean an increase to next year’s budget by adding another employee to handle the duties. (Continued on page 6)

During citizen comments, Marilyn Horne, director of safety and emergency management at Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville, who lives in Green Creek, said commissioners should take their time, do their research and build the emergency management program right. “Before you act to develop new positions, I challenge this committee to research what a functional county emergency management program looks like and commit to working toward a system that will work for the betterment of Polk County,” Horne said. “You need to take your time and build this program right.
This won’t happen overnight but within two to five years a strong emergency management system could be accomplished.” She suggested Polk visit the emergency management directors in Henderson and Transylvania counties and advised commissioners to recruit a qualified person. She also included a graph of how emergency management should be prioritized in the county including that the emergency management director work under the county manager at an estimated salary of $60,000 to $85,000 per year, based on salary suggestions for counties the size of Polk. According to Horne’s graph, the fire marshal’s salary should be between $40,000 and $55,000
per year and the EMS director’s salary should be between $60,000 and $70,000 per year, with both the EMS director and fire marshal working under the emergency management director. Job descriptions approved by commissioners call for the EMS director to possess a degree from a four-year college or university with a major in a medically related field and considerable supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience as well as the special requirement of certification from the state of North Carolina as an emergency medical technician at the paramedic level. The emergency management director/fire marshal’s desired education and experience includes graduation from a com-
munity college or technical school with a two-year degree in law enforcement, fire science, business, electronics or related field and considerable related emergency services experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience as well as the special requirement of the ability to obtain North Carolina Emergency Management certification at required level (at the county manager’s discretion) within two years of employment. Special requirements also include the possession and completion of firefighter I and II probationary certificates (within two years of hire date) and level III fire inspector certification (within three years of hire date), according to the county’s job description.

Erwins offer free musical performance at FENCE
Joseph and Kathleen Erwin at the piano. The Erwins will perform a free program at FENCE on March 17. The 90-year-old couple met as students at Juilliard School of Music in New York. (photo submitted)
Everyone knows that music soothes the soul, but it must also keep you young at heart if you follow the example of Joseph and Kathleen Erwin of Tryon. Come to the Foothills Equestrian Nature Center (FENCE) on March 17 at 4 p.m. to hear this “mature” 90-year-old couple perform. “We are glad to be back at FENCE and we look forward to seeing you at the concert,” said Joseph. Joseph and Kathleen met while both were students at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. After graduation Joe added music education to his repertoire when he accepted Juilliard’s invitation to join the faculty. FENCE administration feels fortunate to be able to share the Erwin’s music right here in Polk County. Join FENCE for this free event, sponsored by the Kirby Endowment at Polk County Com-
munity Foundation. The program is “Transforming Life’s Dissonance into Consonance.” The final musical offering is an original composition written by Joseph to words from Thomas Wolfe’s “You Can’t Go Home Again,” here arranged for violin. The FENCE Family Concert is free and open to all. There will be light refreshments served after the concert. FENCE is located at 3381 Hunting Country Road in Tryon. For more information about FENCE call 828-8599021 or click www.fence.org. The Foothills Equestrian Nature Center’s mission is to provide facilities and focus for education, recreation and preservation in nature studies and equestrian activities with the aim of enhancing these endeavors to enrich the quality of life for the community. – article submitted by Carrie Knox
Working large: Conquer your fear in Saluda March 21-23 Leave your comfort zone and enjoy working a little or a lot larger than your usual sizes. Become adept at making larger as well as better painting and discover why some compositions are meant to be small works and others translate beautifully to a larger format. This three-day studio workshop will be a fun and intensive exploration of handling a large canvas. Participants will learn how to select compositions that “work” for large scale paintings and how to execute them without letting the size intimidate. Painters will work in their choice of acrylic or oil. Participants will begin with a “get acquainted cocktail party” on Wednesday evening, March 20, at Jameson’s home and studio. Each painting day will start with conversation related to
studio technique over coffee, tea and pastries. There will be daily demonstrations working on a large painting. Participants will break for lunch (“Dutch”) and conversation at one of Saluda’s cafes. This workshop is limited to 12 participants so register early. Bill Jameson has been a painter for more than 40 years and has taught workshops for more than 25. He has many repeat students that have stayed with him through the years. Workshop attendees often become personal friends of Bill and his wife, Anne, through their wonderful shared experiences in art, travel and good food. For more information on this and other workshops, visit www.williamjameson.com. – article submitted by Mary Ann Hester

Sunnydale looks back With a long list of bookings under its belt, Sunnydale can call its first year in operation a resounding success. The old log cabin on S. Trade Street in Tryon, restored to its original glory and donated to Tryon Little Theater by the generous Bob and Jackie Lane, has well and truly regained its place as a community gathering spot. Last year Sunnydale hosted fund-raisers, a variety show, numerous weddings and Christmas parties, hunt balls, luncheons, retirement and anniversary parties, business meetings, a masquerade ball, contra-dancing, a rock concert, jam sessions, organizational meetings, volunteer appreciation dinners, a Christmas-tree trimming party, as well as an evening with the nationally acclaimed “Unchained Tour,” featuring raconteurs, poets and

Firescreen designed, created and fitted by donors Bill Crowell and Kathleen Carson. (photo submitted)
Robert Hammerbeck - just to mention a few - have donated time to fix, consult, construct and improve. We had practical input from caterers, and were able to compile a wish list of necessary equipment for the kitchen. So many people are excited about this space and want to see it work on so many different levels.” Sunnydale has been the recipient of some wonderful donations too, like the baby grand piano from Dr. and Mrs. Ratcliffe of Tryon; Bill Crowell of Saluda Forge and Kathleen Carson of Kathleen’s Gallery designed, fabricated, installed and donated a firescreen for the outside fireplace; and there was an anonymous donation of a 12-foot Christmas tree. With a much appreciated grant from the Polk County Community Foundation’s Unrestricted Grants Fund, Sunnydale
was able to install an audio system, fit railings for the front and side porches and stairs to the lower parking area, commission outdoor signage, complete a floor restoration and purchase much needed equipment for the kitchen. “I think we can honestly say that this first year has been a blast,” said Rebecca Davis, committee member. “We’ve learned a lot, collaborated with some talented and skilled people, and hope to keep Sunnydale’s legacy as a community gathering spot alive and well for many years to come.” If you are interested in renting Sunnydale for a wedding, party, conference, fund raiser or celebration, contact Tryon Little Theater at 828-859-2466 or visit www.tltinfo.org for rental information. – article submitted by Monica Jones

Brucksch and Lebo perform at Lenten recital Classical guitarist, Amy Brucksch, and Joanna Mulfinger Lebo, who serves as the principal second violinist of the Greenville Symphony, will present the next Bach’s Lunch/Wednesdays at Noon Lenten Recital at Holy Cross Episcopal Church on March 13. Lebo will perform the Sonata in A minor, Op. 1, No. 1 by Jean Baptiste Loeillet de Gant, with Amy providing the continuo on the guitar. Little is known about this composer’s life, but his solo sonatas have retained their popularity from their origins in the Baroque period to the present day. Strongly influenced by the violin sonatas of Corelli, these pieces combine Italian and French characteristics to create expressive and virtuoso chamber music of the greatest elegance and finesse. Both musicians will perform the Cantabile for Violin and Guitar by Niccolo Paganini. The Cantabile is one of the most lovely of the many compositions written for violin and guitar by Paganini, the
most celebrated violinist/guitarist/ composer of the 19th century. Paganini owned and played an instrument by Nicolo Amati, the same maker of Lebo’s violin. Danza in E minor by Jorge Morel (b. 1931) is a lyrical and beautifully expressive piece for solo guitar by the Argentinian guitarist/composer, whose works combine elements of Latin American music, jazz, and classical composition. From Amazing Grace: Eight Songs of the Spirit arranged by Paula Robison and Frederic Hand, the beloved spirituals Shall We Gather at the River? “Wondrous Love” and “We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder” will be performed by Brucksch and Lebo. These 30-minute Lenten recitals are at noon, and they are free of charge and open to the public. The Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross is located at 150 Melrose Avenue, Tryon. For more information, call the church office at 828-859-9741. – article submitted by Susie Mahnke

Organic, sustainable and local cooking for budget If you want to save money by cooking and eating delicious, seasonal food from scratch and make a positive difference for yourself, your family and for your community, you are invited to attend the Wildly Affordable Organic Cooking Class by cook and researcher Linda Watson. Watson started the Cook for Good project after becoming obsessed with the national Food Stamp Challenge: living on a dollar a meal per person for a week. Her three-week experiment became
a lifestyle, the website CookforGood.com, the book “Wildly Affordable Organic,” and now the Wildly Good Cook videos and teachers’ training program. She teaches cooking classes and gives talks on thrift, sustainability, and food justice across the country. Go green for $5 a day or less with mostly organic or sustainably raised ingredients. Focus on cost to save even more. Either way, you’ll probably be spending less than the food-stamp allowance for someone with no other means. You can af-
ford to eat wonderful food that is good for you and for your planet. Polk County Extension Service is offering a Wildly Affordable Organic Cooking Class on Monday, March 25 at 2 p.m. at the Extension Service Building in Columbus. A small fee will be charged for the class, which will include samples of organic foods. Reserve your space by calling the Polk County Cooperative Extension Service at 894-8218. Space is limited. – article submitted by Jimmi Buell
