Students from the biofuels class at Polk County High School visited Tawana Weicker’s facility in Landrum where she produces Warhorse and Be Kind Solutions pet care and cleaning products. Weicker began making biofuel to run her family’s vehicles after learning about the process from former PCHS senior Elizabeth Russell. Advertising on Morris the horse banned by Leah Justice
The days of advertising on Morris the horse in downtown Tryon are officially over following the town mascot being rebuilt last year.
Tryon Town Council met Tuesday, March 19 and approved, by a 3-2 vote, banning advertising on Morris. Council members directed staff to work on other means of
advertising near the statue for local events. The vote was a tie with mayor (Continued on page 4)

pro-tem Roy Miller and councilman Doug Arbogast voting in favor of banning advertising on Morris and councilmen George Baker and Wim Woody voting against the ban. Mayor Alan Peoples broke the tie in favor of disallowing advertising. Interim town manager Joey Davis said the planning board looked at proposals for advertising on Morris last week. One option discussed was to allow organizations to hang advertising on Morris if they first received a permit from town hall and hung signs over a protective covering on the statue. Proposed regulations were that advertising could not be secured with screws or nails. Initially, Arbogast said he liked the saddle blanket idea. He said it could be handled like test driving a car; if someone damaged Morris they would have to pay for the damage. Tryon resident John Gargiulo said it was the consensus of a group of Tryon citizens that signage cheapens the whole intent of Morris. He said a few years ago he went to the Tryon Riding and Hunt Club (former Morris owner) about giving Morris to the town and when it was discussed they talked about there being no signage on Morris and to build a directory next to Morris to be used for events. “I’m totally against signage on Morris,” Gargiulo said.

Robert W. Settle Robert “Bobby” Settle, 82, of Landrum died March 19, 2013. He was the son of the late Ralph and Fannie Settle and husband of Irene Solesbee Settle. He was a member of Landrum First Baptist Church and was retired from Life of Virginia Insurance Company. He was a loving and caring “Papa” to all who knew him. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Susan Jackson and husband John; Lisa Owens and husband
He added that anything, including tape, placed on Morris would cause damage and if the town wants to have it for 20 or 30 years it should never have anything on it. Baker said he personally doesn’t have a problem with people putting things on Morris. “That’s what Morris is there for,” Baker said, “to gain attention.” Woody also said he doesn’t have a problem as long as the signage fits (the protective covering). Tryon business owner Kim Nelson asked council if Morris was handcrafted and if it is original? “Is there another like it?” Nelson asked. “My opinion is that it’s artwork and I don’t think it should be covered.” The town will later discuss other options, such as placing a kiosk near Morris for advertising events. The Tryon Riding and Hunt Club donated Morris to the town in 2011. Tryon then appointed a committee for fundraising to repair the statue, which was completed last October. The original Morris was designed by Eleanor Vance as a giant version of one of the most popular toys made by the Tryon Toy-Makers and Wood-Carvers, which was owned by Vance and Charlotte Yale. Morris the statue was built for the TR&HC in 1928. The original Morris was destroyed in a fire and four other statues based on Morris’ original design have been built since. Tryon residents gave the statue its name “Morris.” Scott; five grandchildren, Elisabeth, Sarah and John Robert Jackson, Will and Ian Owens. Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Landrum First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Andy Allen, Rev. Chuck Mullinax, Rev. Jimmy Camp and Rev. Mark Bishop. Burial will be in Landrum Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Landrum First Baptist Church Building Fund, 300 E. Rutherford Road, Landrum, SC 29356. The family is at the home. New pottery class offered at Tryon Arts and Crafts Tryon Arts and Crafts School welcomes local potter and sculptor Ann Gleason as the instructor of a new Monday evening hand building pottery class. In Gleason’s class, students will take slab-built forms to a new level of possibilities, along with further exploration of slip-work and other embellishment options done while clay is in the unfired, green ware state. Altering basic forms, using found objects and molds, and extruded clay will also be explored. New students will move along swiftly covering the basics of each technique: pinch, coil, soft-slab, as well as introducing many alternatives within each technique. The class will start Monday, April 1 from 6 - 9 p.m., and will meet for six weeks. The instructor, Ann Gleason, a local well-known and accomplished artist, received her MFA in ceramics from the University of Utah. She is a full-time professional potter; part-time studio potter and part

time teacher. Gleason serves as an adjunct instructor of ceramics at Greenville Technical College and in the past with Converse College, Wofford College, Spartanburg Art Center, Blue Ridge Community College and Tryon Arts & Crafts.

duction to the Healing Power of Reminiscence.”The interactive workshop sessions will be two hours long on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the first two weeks of April (April 2, 4, 9 and 11) from 10 a.m. to noon. “Robin has a lovely way of bringing memories to the surface. I’ve learned a lot from her and plan to start writing down my thoughts each day because it’s so heartwarming to reminisce,” said previous workshop participant, Janice Joyce. Lanier Library representative Lynn Montgomery adds, “Robin’s workshop has prompted me to engage in reminiscing with my siblings to recall childhood events, especially as siblings can have differing views of those events.” A lifestyle journalist and storyteller for more than 30 years, Edgar successfully shares her expertise in reminiscence
writing at prestigious venues around the country and locally at the John C. Campbell Folk School and Wild Acres Retreat. She also edits and ghost writes autobiographies and serves as a member of the Woman’s Story Circle Network. Her second book, “Personal Legacies: Surviving the Great Depression,” serves as the catalog for her previous museum exhibit at the Charlotte Museum of History in Charlotte, N.C. and PBS documentary with the same title. “I am on a quest to help people discover the stories about individuals and incidents that shaped their lives,” said Edgar. “Similar to Jimmy Stewart’s character in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ when people reflect on their past, they see they have made a difference.” In order to give participants full attention, the class size for Life Writing Through the Sens-

FENCE yard (stall) sale March 23 Foothills Equestrian Nature Center (FENCE) this Saturday, March 23 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. will host its yard (actually stall) sale. Shoppers can find everything from tack to toys and buy some treats and drinks to support Therapeutic Riding of Tryon (TROT). The yard sale walk area is covered and there is plenty of parking. Evans inducted into Second Wind Hall of Fame Stuart Evans has been inducted into the Second Wind Hall of Fame and received her certificate at the February Tryon Fine Arts Center (TFAC) Board meeting from Judy Warden, SWHF Board member and former TFAC President. Many former TFAC Board members and close friends were invited to attend this honor for Stuart and a reception was held in her honor following the certificate presentation. TFAC was thrilled to sponsor Stuart for all her tireless volunteering on their behalf as the treasurer for many years and recently as vice president
of development including special events. Stuart initiated the Art In Bloom garden tours, bringing in garden vendors from all over the Carolinas to raise money for pocket parks to be created in the Tryon, Landrum and Columbus communities. She also provided her own garden to be on the tour last year. Stuart organized the Po’ Kitty fundraiser held at TFAC to benefit the Foothills Humane Society (FHS) for several years and is an active foster family for many kitty litters for FHS. - article submitted by Judy Warden

Laurel Hurst residents have decided to choose a charity each month to support. For the month of February they collected items to donate to both the Second Chance Thrift Sore and to the Steps to HOPE Shelter. Residents went through their closets and drawers and filled the entire back half of the bus with items to donate for resale. Then they collected two large bags full of toiletries and baby items to take to Steps to HOPE. And of course they had to do some shopping. Rachel Ramsey and her staff were wonderful to explain what happens at Steps to HOPE and how the money from the Second Chance Thrift Store is used to help fund all they do.
