crawl space removed.

Tryon Town Council met March 19 and approved an $18,400 agreement with John Salmon, with Foothills Crawl Space, who said the job should take about three weeks to com-

plete.

The town agreed to pay for half of the costs in April then the remaining balance in July when the new budget year begins.

information about future plans for the Mill Spring Agricultural Center.

Agricultural development director Lynn Sprague said staff and volunteers have accomplished much since December 2009 when they began renovating the former Mill Spring school building.

“Polk County put its foot forward and established the office of agricultural development. (Now) people want to find out what we did – how we were successful, how we engaged the community, what we did to advance agriculture economically,” Sprague said.

“When we go out to other workshops and events, it’s neat to hear, “like they do in Polk.”

Farmer Lee Mink echoed sentiments heard from people outside Polk County about the center and work done locally to benefit agriculture.

“The ag center has become Polk County’s identity; it has done more to build community than anything else in Polk County,” Mink said. “I don’t think there is anything that is going to do more to affect the economy of Polk County.”

Sprague said with some farmers he’s just had to give them an ata-boy and encourage them to get back in the market but others have needed “all night kitchen-table talks” teaching them business development tools and marketing strategies.

The ag center has also been the center for Mountain Bizworks courses, farmer networking, beginning farmer mentoring programs, assistance for families trying to start their own gardens and more.

The work focuses too on helping farmers sell their products.

K i r k Wi l s o n m e a n w h i l e oversees Polk Fresh Foods, which connects local producers with markets in Charlotte, Asheville and Greenville. Others have helped to bolster the four community farmer markets in Columbus, Mill Spring, Saluda and Tryon.

They’ve increased participation at the market in Columbus from a handful of vendors to more than 50 most weekends in Columbus.

“The surge is part of people being concerned about healthy, local food,” Sprague said. “We’re riding that surge. It is a trendy thing right now but that is what has captured the general public.”

Capturing the general public’s attention also attracts volunteers.

For the ag center those numbers have reached about 1,000 over the past three years.

AmeriCorps member Laura Brookshire has worked at the ag center for the past two years. She said the center grabs attention globally as well.

“We have people all over the world who have liked our facebook page – so there are people all over the world interested in what we are doing here and who support it,” said Brookshire.

up during the breakfast to ask commissioners and other decision makers where they saw the program heading in the future.

Commission chair Michael Gage answered by saying he’s been working hard to better educate himself about the role of agriculture in Polk County.

“When I got elected I knew very little about farming … I’ve been getting up to speed, asking a lot of questions and that may have upset a lot of people when I asked those questions, but I’ve got to know the real deal,” Gage said.

“I’ve asked Lynn (Sprague) some tough questions … but I support farming and I want to make sure we do whatever we’ve got to do to make it successful in Polk County.”

Gage told the Bulletin later in the day that some people have approached him asking if rumor’s were true that Sprague’s job was in jeopardy. He said the county faces some real challenges in the future between budgets and with the state retuning how it does things, but he said no one was under fire.

“I’m not looking to target anybody, I’m not looking to defund anything … I’m just trying to educate myself by asking questions,” Gage said. “I do support agriculture in Polk County – I know it’s a rich part of Polk County’s history – and (the people at the ag center) are doing a lot of really cool things and I want to make sure that keeps going.”

During the ag breakfast Ted Owens also stood to say he was on the commission when the county made room in the budget for the agriculture development director position and voted Sprague into the position. Owens said the (Continued on page 7)

Doris Stott Steadman Doris Stott Steadman, 80, of Landrum passed away March 19, 2013.

She was the daughter of the late Broadus Correll and Edna Mae McSwain Stott and widow of Earl Lee Steadman.

She was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher of the ladies Sunday school class and was the church clerk. She was retired from South Carolina Elastic.

She is survived by two daughters, Virginia Denton (Wayne) and Sheila Rhoden (Keith); a brother, Alfred Stott (Dorothy); two sister in laws, Annette and Doris Stott;

Interim town manager Joey Davis said during former town manager Caitlin Martin’s employment, she began researching encapsulating the crawl space at town hall due to ongoing issues with mold and mildew. Davis said in the town’s strategic plan, Tryon came up with a strategy for the town hall building and one of the issues is mold and mildew.

Tryon Mayor Alan Peoples mentioned the idea to move town hall offices back to where they used to be and using the current space as a town museum and visitor’s center.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

current board continues to support agriculture and farmers. He added the county is currently in the early stages of the budget process, so it is left to be seen what things will be possible in the new fiscal year.

He did say he is interested in seeing more work being done to encourage farmland preservation as well as promotion of local farmers’ products.

“Farmland preservation years ago was a big thing and we funded a lot of money for that and now that money is being put to other uses; those numbers need to be looked at,” Owens said.

Owens went on to say that he was happy with the accomplishments Sprague has made with the ag center. Now, he said it was time to refocus efforts.

“I’m glad we had a Lynn here when (the ag center) came available but that is not his purpose; they have someone to run the ag

center,” Owens said. “His purpose is to promote agriculture in Polk County. What I’m suggesting is that now it’s time for Lynn to devote more of his time to the duties we hired him for in promoting those farmers.”

He said he also hopes the commission is able to keep the agricultural development and economic and tourism development positions separated.

In the 2012-2013 budget, the county allotted $143,229 for agriculture development with about $66,000 accounting for the director’s salary and benefits.

The Polk County Commission recently requested budgets from the county’s various departments.

According to the budget schedule, interim county manager Marche Pittman said he is to present a balanced budget to commission on May 6.

The final budget must be approved and in place by July 1; June 17 is the last regular meeting of the commission prior to that deadline.

There is no Easter without Good Friday. There is no Resurrection without death.

As I write this it is very early on Palm Sunday and we at Holy Cross are preparing for the days of Holy Week.

This morning we will begin by celebrating the triumphant entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem where he is proclaimed as the Messiah and the heir of King David, but by the end of the service we will have read the Passion Narrative and learned how the priests and the scribes turned the people against him and how the Roman governor Pilate had him beaten and executed in the most painful and brutal manner imaginable.

As the week progresses and our worship services reflect the healing ministry of Jesus,

his pastoral care and comfort to the poor and distressed, his institution of the rite of Holy Communion in his Last Supper with his disciples, his betrayal by one closest to him, his mock trial, the denial of his best friend, and the brutal treatment and execution on the cross we come to Good Friday frayed and exhausted.

Jesus had done all he humanly could to bring the Gospel, the Good News, the hope of God’s gift of love and healing to the people, and though he was initially celebrated, his demands that we change our lives and institutions to reflect that promised love were rejected, and so he was killed by those in power for the sake of maintaining the (continued on page 9)

Foothills Music Club presents young musicians scholarships The Foothills Music Club takes pleasure in announcing its 2013 scholarship winners following auditions held March 1-2.

The first place winner and recipient of the Lesley Oakes Scholarship is Rachel Richards of Shelby, N.C. She is a senior at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy and studies cello with Kathleen Foster of Rutherfordton, a member of the Foothills Music Club.

Richards plays with the First Baptist Shelby Orchestra, the Hendersonville Symphony Youth Orchestra and the orchestra at her school.

She auditioned on a recently acquired cello whose purchase was funded in part by FMC scholarship awards.

Second place winner and recipient of the Betty Van Buskirk Scholarship is Paulina Ray-Zorick, playing the piano and singing. Ray-Zorick is a resident of Columbus and is a home-schooled 12 th grader.

She has studied music for 11 years and is currently a student of Judy Loveland of Hendersonville in piano, violin and voice.

Ray-Zorick is also a participant in the Hendersonville

Symphony Youth Orchestra and has performed locally in several venues.

Recipient of the third place, Kathleen Erwin scholarship is Katherine Barker of Tryon, on alto saxophone.

A student at Polk County High School, she plays in the band under the direction of Cindy Gilbert and has also participated in All District Band.

A special scholarship for vocal performance in memory of FMC member Grace Bley has been awarded to Katherine Riedy of Campobello.

A home-schooled student, she studies voice in Tryon with Mary Meyers of the FMC. She has participated in many local productions with Tryon Little Theater, as well as the S.C. Children’s Theatre.

Receiving honorable mention were two auditioners – Stephen Stimac from PCHS, playing trumpet, and Ariana Jackson from Landrum High School on piano.

Both are members of their school bands and have also studied privately.

FENCE hosts third invasive species removal day March 29

FFA participates in poultry event The Polk County FFA chapter participated in the North Carolina FFA poultry evaluation career development event on March 15 at N.C. State University.

Team members included Brianna Dill, Jamie Greene, Kyle Whitson and Hunter Hilbig. Their FFA advisor’s are Ashley Gilbert and Chauncey Barber.

During this event, students

evaluated production, processing and merchandising phases of the poultry industry as well as identified various industry components. They were also tested on the application of sound management processes.

Students also selected and graded ready-to-cook turkeys, and processed products and cartons of eggs.

Foothills Equestrian Nature Center (FENCE) is hosting its third invasive species removal project on Friday, March 29 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

This project was started in the spring of 2012 with a small group of AmeriCorps Project Conserve members, community volunteers and FENCE staff.

Exotic invasive species, originally planted as ornamental plants in gardens, often escape into native habitats causing havoc. Invasive plant species choke out native plant species and decrease biodiversity.

FENCE’s second invasive removal day on March 19 was such a success that we decided to host another removal day. FENCE had 13 community members join its small staff to remove privet, Japanese honeysuckle, oriental bittersweet, English ivy and

trumpet vine from half of an acre of our Wildwood trail.

The organization is seeking community members interested in helping continue work on the trail. FENCE will supply equipment and supplies needed for the project, but volunteers can bring any personal gardening tools and gloves that they wish to use.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided free of charge for all volunteers.
