to TLT in December 2012. The Sunnydale committee, led by Rebecca Davis and Susie Kocher, has worked through the $13,300 PCCF grant to further enhance Sunnydale. “It gave us the opportunity to outfit so many things in the building that make it more user friendly, so we can open it up to more events without upkeep being so difficult,” said Davis. Davis said the energy sparked by the Lanes gift has captured the community’s interest. “When we first got [Sunnydale] we thought we would take our time but we got a call the next day from someone wanting to rent it,” she said. A lot of the community feels like it’s their building too, Davis added, because TLT is such a part of the community. They take ownership because of their fond memories of the historic building. Davis’ own great-grandparents retired to Tryon in the 30s, so she

see the same information commissioners see and commissioner Pack suggested the county look into wireless microphones and monitors so all audience members could see and hear. The county has heard complaints for years that audience members cannot hear what commissioners are saying and often speak from the audience telling officials to speak into their microphones. The current microphone system has been in place since the Womack building was constructed in 1999. Commissioner vice-chair Ted Owens said he doesn’t see how the public can see anything from the audience. “I think it’s a decision this board has to make,” Owens said, “do we want to make it easier for the public to see and hear or leave it like it is. If we’re going to do it, it’s time we did it or if we don’t let’s quit talking about it.” Owens said the board also discussed upgrading the technology in the meeting room in 2005-2006 and it was the same thing, a lot of money.

heard her mother talk about them attending events at the social hall. When Davis’ family moved here she created her own memories through proms held at Sunnydale and the dinners and dances her own parents attended. “It’s always been there – it’s never changed and you can’t say that for many places now,” Davis said. “It was literally falling down … so it’s great to see that it’s going to be standing for another 100 years exactly as it is.” Since TLT became owners, they have rented Sunnydale for community events including wedding receptions, hunt balls, church meetings and fundraisers, Kocher said. “The board of TLT and the Sunnydale committee believe that making Sunnydale available to our community at an affordable rental rate is part of the vision that Bob Lane has for Sunnydale,” Kocher said. For information about renting Sunnydale, contact Tryon Little Theater at 828-859-2466 or visit www.tltinfo.org. Interim county manager Marche Pittman said the contract will put the monitors facing the audience and includes a document camera and wireless microphones for all commissioners and the attorney. The county received three estimates, with one coming in over $50,000 and the other approximately $400 above the low bid, which was chosen. Commissioners asked Pittman if the technology was cutting edge. “It’s not cutting edge but it’s a lot better than we have now,” Pittman said. After some discussion with county finance officer Sandra Hughes about where the money would come from, commissioners decided to take it out of fund balance. Hughes said another option was to take the money out of fuel and regular contingency. The county currently has $24,000 remaining in its fuel contingency and another $13,000 in its regular contingency. Hughes also said so far this year, not including the new technology, the county has taken approximately $511,000 from its fund balance.

The eighth annual Tryon April Fool’s Festival begins at 10 a.m. on April 6 with a farmers market featuring 15 vendors offering all kinds of treats, including some of the first Polk County produce of the season. At the same time, music will signal the start of a high-energy Zumbathon to benefit Thermal Belt Outreach. Music will continue with Christopher Laughter’s Irish reels and fiddle tunes from noon until 3 pm. The Trophy Husbands will continue the beat from 3 to 6 p.m. with music for your listening and dancing pleasure. And at 6 p.m., O’Neal Township will continue to rock until 8 p.m. Wood-fired pizza, hotdogs and brats will be available in the food tents, as well as pizza from Buck’s and Asian delights from Kyoto’s. For those who would rather dine indoors, Southside Grille on Trade Street will offer a 10 percent discount on meals all day. Regional beers and wine will be available, as well as water and soft drinks. And YEAST, the local beer brewing club, will craft their beverages while providing information for those who are interested in learning. At 6:30 p.m., a Contra Dance will begin at Sunnydale, with Irish and Appalachian folk music by the Skeeziks. A Contra lesson will be offered from 6:30 to 7 p.m., with

the serious business continuing from 7 to 9 p.m.. Diane Silver, a popular Asheville caller will keep the dance going. it began in the dark, that first easter morning. the dark of betrayal, and suffering – the dark agony of unbelievable, unexpected loss. the dark of death. it was the kind of darkness that leaves a pit in your stomach, confusion in your mind, and fear in your heart. the kind of darkness where you can’t see straight; a time so dark that even the messiah begins to look like the gardener, and today begins to look like yesterday, and tomorrow doesn’t even matter. But it didn’t end there. the darkness became light. fear became joy. death became life. Jesus was alive and not dead.

those early disciples didn’t understand what had happened any better than many of us do today. But somehow it was enough. Jesus was alive. and they knew it. they could feel his presence. and for many even today that incredible, wondrous mystery continues. there are many ways to characterize the message of easter. one such characterization that has long intrigued me came from a young man who summed up the message of easter, as “what you see isn’t all you get.” more proper theological minds have described the message as “death is swallowed up (continued on page 9)

Picasso at the Lapin Agile: Tryon Little Theater’s April play Two geniuses walk into a bar… I’ll come back to that. Let’s just say, hypothetically, the year is 1904 and there is a bar in Paris called the Lapin Agile. (Actually there is such a bar and it has been there since the mid 1800s.) Tryon Little Theater will bring the Lapin Agile to Tryon in April with its unique cast of characters. Freddy (Elvin Clark) is the owner and bartender of the Lapin Agile. He is assisted by his waitress and girl-friend Germaine (Donna Everett) when she is not engaged in her other...pursuits. Gaston (Lou Buttino) is a bar regular who is only newly old and considers women as “my area of expertise.” A young man who works in a patent office by day and writes about “everything” by night walks into the bar to wait for a

Picasso at the Lapin Agile manages to be funny, smart and silly all at the same time. It is for mature audiences and it’s guaranteed to not only make you laugh but to make you think. The play takes over the TLT Workshop April 18-21 and 25-28. Box office opens April 8. Come and enjoy the Lapin Agile. Oh, I almost forgot the end of the set up — Two geniuses walk into a bar … hilarity ensues. – article submitted by Elvin Clark

Saluda Arts Festival dedicated to memory of Waddill The artwork by John Waddill has been a trademark for the Saluda Arts Festival since 2006 when Waddill permitted the use of one of his watercolors to the Saluda Business Association. “The watercolor depicts a colorful, fun-filled festival on Historic Main Street in Saluda and is a great representation and branding of the Saluda Arts Festival,” said Cathy Jackson, spokesperson for the Saluda Art Festival organizers. “We were trying to design a logo and brand for the Saluda Arts Festival, when Johnny brought this painting in to hang in the former Saluda Fine Arts gallery. At first glance, we knew that this painting was a perfect image of festival fun in Saluda. Johnny graciously gave us permission to use it and was astounded when he saw us selling t-shirts and posters with the image. He was always supportive of the Saluda Arts Festival.”
