St. Luke’s receives grant for education from PCCF St. Luke’s Hospital is pleased to announce receipt of a grant in the amount of $4,874 from The Bosien Fund of the Polk County Community Foundation (PCCF) to support three educational travel opportunities for hospital staff. This year’s award provided funding for an RN and department manager to attend the North Carolina Council of Community Programs 2012 Conference - “Anticipate Success: Know Your Next Steps.” The conference addressed issues arising from the restructuring of the mental health system in North Carolina due to the recent implementation of the Medicare waiver through Managed Care Organizations. In addition, funding was provided for a hospital social worker to attend a professional conference or training at the North Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers

(NASW-NC) in Asheville and/ or attend the annual national conference in Washington, D.C. NASW conferences offer a wide variety of presentations and workshops designed to provide valuable education and insight regarding effective social work practices and techniques. They focus on professional development, social worker physical and mental self-care, alternative practices and therapies, as well as general issues related to the practice of social work. The PCCF Bosien Fund also enabled Jamie Cehlar, DPT, physical therapist with St. Luke’s Hospital’s Outpatient Rehabilitation, to obtain certification in vestibular rehabilitation through Emory University, a leader in vestibular rehabilitation research. She attended training with 166 other students from around the world. This entirely evidencedbased program has enhanced our

therapists’ skills in vestibular deficits, gait and balance, fall risk, and the functional assessment of patients. With a large population of elderly patients in Polk County and the surrounding areas, balance, dizziness and related falls are a major concern at St. Luke’s. Scott McDermott, director of rehabilitation services at St. Luke’s Hospital, stated, “Our community did not have a functioning vestibular rehabilitation program. Patients had to travel 30-40 miles on a regular basis to receive vestibular treatment in Asheville or Spartanburg. Attendance at this training has enabled St. Luke’s physical therapy department to build upon our existing balance program and enhance it to include vestibular conditions. This training will enable St. Luke’s to offer an entirely new service to the community. We are excited about this program and very thankful

Jamie Cehlar, DPT, physical therapist

to the Polk County Community Foundation for their support.” The mission of PCCF is to “Support charitable and beneficial activities in the community; Provide and administer a variety of planned giving programs; Serve as responsible stewards of all funds entrusted to it;” and “Provide initiatives in recognizing areas of community needs and supporting solutions.” (Continued on page 13)

Polk downs Avery 3-0 with strong second half by Chris Hurst

Polk County’s soccer team beat Avery 3-0 Friday night, April 5 with an impressive second half. After the game, Coach Lennox Charles was happy with the girls’ efforts, even as he saw room for improvement. “It was a good game, but I think we could have done better,” he said, “We were coming off Wednesday’s game that went to overtime, so we seemed to be lacking in energy the first half. We

missed two or three really easy goals. You could see the effects of our last game today.” Whatever improvements could have been made during the first half of play seemed to be implemented after halftime. Ellese Cash had two goals and one assist, while Lyric Flood scored the remaining goal. Megan Clements and Julie Meldgaard also had assists. “The goals we had were great,” Coach Charles said, “but I think we could have scored all of those

goals in the first half. If we could have gone into halftime up 3-0, the second half wouldn’t have been so tense. Avery wouldn’t have scared us so much.” Avery’s club came close to scoring several times during the second half, but Polk’s defense, led by Makenzie White cleared the ball almost every time. “The defense did a great job,” Charles said, pausing before jokingly adding “and the one time they didn’t, we were lucky the crossbar

did.”Charles was referring to a shot by Avery midway through the second half that bounced off the top of the goal. “Overall, I think we did a good job today,” he said, “but we’re about to head into some very difficult games. I think if we play our best, we’ll be happy with the results.” Polk’s next game is Tuesday, April 9 at Madison. Their next home game is April 15 verses Mountain Heritage.

One by one, they began to have arguments with Johnson, some of them extremely bitter. That’s why an argument erupted immediately between Ward and Johnson that February morning. In anger, Johnson shot at Ward. The bullet hit Ward’s small son and killed him instantly. Sheriff Gilreath came and took Johnson to the County Jail. Months later, at his trial, testimony indicated that Ward was standing at such an angle to Johnson that Johnson could not see the child before he fired. The jury found that the child was killed accidentally. Because of this, Johnson was acquitted of manslaughter.

The Western Dressage Association will present a clinic in classical dressage skills led by clinician Ed Dabney April 12 – 14 at Suncatcher Farm’s covered arena in Tryon. In this clinic, riders will learn to ride with precision, accuracy and lightness. The clinic will include essential warm up exercises, lessons on how to recognize and improve the quality of your horse’s gaits, correct use of the rein, leg and weight aids, the classical seat for correct posture, cues for smooth gait transitions, lightness in stopping and backing and proper canter among other things. On Sunday afternoon there will be a Ride-A-Test component, where participants will be able to ride a WDAA test of their choice and be judged. The judge will evaluate your ride and discuss it with you, and if time permits, the rider will be able to ride the test a second time. The WDAA rules and tests may be found on the WDAA website: http://westerndressageassociation.org/ western-dressage-rules-tests/
