Briggs said Martin would be tasked with seeing a number of current projects to fruition including renovations of the depot and sidewalk improvements to N. Randolph Street. He said having

her work side-by-side with Wolochowicz for several weeks would hopefully ensure she’s well educated about the tasks ahead of her. “We wanted a smooth transition and I think things are going to work out just fine,” Briggs said. She’s eager to get to work and I think she will be a good fit for the town.” Martin said she looks forward to the challenge of carrying on the projects Wolochowicz launched as well as bringing her own thoughts and suggestions to the table. “Steve’s done a great job here so I want to keep the machine working,” Martin said. “I’m looking forward to it very much – everyone I’ve met has been wonderful and very welcoming.” From Easley, S.C., Martin graduated from Clemson University with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies and a minor in political science. She graduated from the College of Charleston in May 2011 with a master’s of public administration degree and a certification in urban and regional planning.

wealthy industrialists, many others, such as the Sidney Lanier Award, are funded only by the entry fees of the poets themselves. This year the total monetary value of the Lanier Award prizes will exceed $1,100, with a top prize of $500, but, as past winners have told us, it is the recognition of the worthiness of their work that is their greatest reward. As she has since the beginning of the competition, Cathy Smith Bowers of Tryon is the competition’s judge. During that time she became the North Carolina Poet Laureate, which greatly added to her busy schedule as a writer and a teacher at Queens University of Charlotte, but her commitment to the competition has been unrestrained throughout. She will, once again, present this year’s awards to the winning poets and all finalists in the competition. – article submitted by Frances Flynn

The Second Wind Hall of Fame recently selected Marla Bailey to receive a “Catch a Second Wind” scholarship. Bailey is attending UNC Asheville and will receive a bachelor of arts degree in psychology in August. The scholarship will cover the cost of her summer coursework. She will then continue at the university with education courses and student teaching so that she can become a certified elementary school teacher. Second Wind Hall of Fame is an organization that recognizes retirees who have done outstanding volunteer work in organizations in the Thermal Belt community. The organization raises funds to provide scholarships for adults in the community who are seeking additional education or training in their current career or in a new career.

Called “Catch A Second Wind” scholarships, they provide needed funds for an adult who: 1. Is at least a high school graduate 2. Has exemplary personal qualities, is a good citizen and is “deserving” and industrious 3. Is already in the workplace (or has been) and has demonstrated a good work ethic 4. Can demonstrate material benefit to be gained by additional training 5. Plans to attend an accredited public or private college, university, community college or a recognized technical or vocational institution. We are known throughout the state as a county that has created a local economy built around food, bringing new opportunities for the community to grow and prosper. Now is the time for us to be proactive. Let your county commissioners know that we must maintain the momentum we have established through the office of agriculture and economic development. Without it, we lose what so many have contributed time, money and voluntary labor to create. We will accomplish more by continuing to work together, finding common ground and keeping personal agendas out of it. Keep the office of agriculture and economic development.

All participants who register before April 27 will receive a T-shirt. For more information or sponsorship opportunities, please email PCYC at PCYC5K@gmail. com. – article submitted by Dollie-Brooke Reid
