Williamson is undefeated after three years participating in the games. “I like to win and plus I’ve got to stay ahead of my grandson who plays football at Daniel High,” he said joking. The Greater Greenville Senior Sports Classic marked its 21st year with more than 200 participants. Event organizers said the premise behind the competition is to promote regular exercise in the lives of seniors. “He’s a pleasure to know – I can’t believe how much stamina he has, which makes everyone in awe of him,” program coordinator Joni Dilworth said of Williamson. “Look at him, he isn’t your typical 95-year-old and I think it is all because he stays active and healthy.” Dilworth said she believes he could have competed as well (Continued on page 4)

Whitaker launches ‘Let Them Play’ Emma Whitaker, a third grader at Campobello Gramling School, started collecting toys for kids in Haiti as a challenge from her dad, David. “Let Them Play” is a mission ministry started by Emma. Its goal is to spread joy and the love of Jesus to children around the world and show them that someone cares. This ministry collects toys and books that are given as a part of children’s meals at restaurants and sends them on mission trips around the world. They also collect other small toys as long as they are in very good condition. Her job in the effort is to collect toys and pack them up.

Emma Whitaker

From there, her dad takes control. Emma says, “I believe the kids will be really happy, because the toys may be all they get.” – article submitted by Campobello Gramling School students Lacey Camp, Morgan Ford and Kenslee Crocker

Follow the quilts

PØÙį Ļ  ±êÂêā±ā

Laurel Hurst residents go on a mystery ride every Monday afternoon. Usually they just get on the bus, pick a road and see where it goes. This week however, they had a goal for their ride. They wanted to follow the quilt square trail in Landrum. They found quilt squares on the fire department, city hall, Landrum Library, O.P. Earle Elementary School and The Hospice Thrift Barn. Where the quilt squares are is no longer a mystery to them. (photo submitted by Jennifer Thompson)

Cole chosen as District 2 SCBOA At 16-4, Polk Wolverine softball Middle School Coach of the Year squad ‘in the playoff mix’ On March 20 Coach Sam Cole was chosen as the District 2 SCBOA (South Carolina Basketball Officials Association) Middle School Coach of the Year for 2013. Coach Cole serves as a basketball and football coach and athletic director at Campobello Gramling School. Coach Cole stated, “I am extremely humbled and honored to receive this award, especially since one of the former recipients was Dr. Ron Garner [Superintendent, District One].” Cole was honored at a ceremony in Spartanburg.

Going into spring break, Polk County High School’s varsity softball team is 16-4, after a 10-7 victory over Rosman on April 18. “We’re still in the playoff mix,” remarked head coach Jeff Wilson. “Our team unity has been good, and we’ve played high-quality softball.” Last Friday’s scheduled conference game at Mitchell was postponed by rain, and will be played May 2. In conference action on April 16, Polk lost to Mountain Heritage, but went on to top Rosman, 10-7. On April 30, the Wolverines host Owen from Black Mountain, and on May 6 will host Swain County (Bryson City), both conference games. They travel to Hendersonville on May 3 for non-conference action. Where would the Wolverines be without the services of ace pitcher Katie Ruff? With a core of maturing

hurlers, Wilson’s squad would be well served, but Ruff’s 15-3 mark before the break, speaks volumes about her contribution. Defensive leaders have included catcher Ashley Kropp and first-base woman Cassie Couch. Top hitters have been Maddy Foy, Brittany Jones, Shalyn Brown and Amber Lynch. Because of the 4 p.m. start time for home games, the Wolverines have played before adequate, but not large crowds, said Wilson. Wolverine fans, or anyone who enjoys watching a great team, might wish to enjoy this one, especially as playoffs near. “We have a good attitude, are playing good-quality ball, and having lots of fun,” noted Wilson, who, earlier this year, won his 300th game as Wolverines’ varsity (fast-pitch) softball coach.

When government wants to do something, such as raise your property taxes, it must let citizens know. Now that right is being threatened by proposed legislation in Raleigh to do away with the requirement to run public notices in your local newspaper - where people actually notice them. Instead, they would be buried on some government website that most citizens never visit. That means you may never know what your local government was up to. And what you don't know can hurt you. But there is a better way. Tell your legislator to support HB 723 and vote against HB 504, HB 755, SB 287 and SB 186.

Tryon Painters and Sculptors (TPS) will feature Don Blackwell at their upcoming Art, Wine and Cheese program on April 30 from 4-6 p.m. Born in Hendersonville, N.C., Blackwell’s pen and ink images reflect his love of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the inhabitants. A versatile artist, his works are done in pencil, pen and ink, watercolor, airbrush and colored pencil. He is also creating work in a unique form of expression called pyrography or burning an image into various mediums. He also carves in wood, crafting mountain wood spirits on hiking sticks, canes and larger pieces. Blackwell creates works that when viewed from a distance, are almost photo-realistic. Moving close, the eye begins to see the thousands of pen and ink dots in a technique made famous by the French Impressionists called “pointillism.” He teaches drawing, pen and ink, and colored pencil, and conducts an open studio at Isothermal Community College. Please join TPS at their studio on 26 Maple St., April 30,
