and assisting with the Samaritan’s Purse tsunami relief efforts. The girls will be interning with Ashley Kropp’s grandparents, Richard and Janice Kropp, who have been missionaries in Japan for the past 40 years. The cost for airfare and lodging is $2,500 per student. This Saturday, May 25, the students will hold a car wash at Advanced Auto in Columbus beginning at 8 a.m. and a yard sale in the parking lot across from Scoops ‘N More in Columbus beginning at 7 a.m. Phipps and Kropp are sophomores and Siegfried is a freshman at PCHS. “I want to go to Japan because I feel like being given the opportunity, all three of us can truly make a difference in the lives of the Japanese,” Siegfried said. “I hope to make a difference in the life of at least one person and show them the love of Jesus.” The students say they have been constantly praying and are excited about shadowing a couple

completely devoted to serving God. Their trip is planned for June 17 through July 18. “I want to go so I can experience new things and hopefully help serve and tell the Japanese people about Jesus,” Ashley Kropp said. “I hope to accomplish this: that through my witness, the Japanese people will learn of Jesus Christ and His love and all He has done for us.” Part of their work will be helping with tsunami victims. Japan was hit with a tsunami in 2011 with many families still living outside of their homes because of water and mud damage, the students have learned. Each day, the girls said, their primary focus will be to build relationships with the local community and use those relationships to share the Gospel. This will be Phipp’s third mission trip out of the country. She went to China in 2011 and Serbia in 2012 as well as mission trips in the U.S. “[I want] to show each and every person that I come in contact

Polk County High School students Madison Siegfried, Sarah Phipps and Ashley Kropp plan to spend a month this summer on a mission trip in the suburbs of Tokyo, Japan. with the love of Jesus Christ and all He has done for them and for me,” Phipps said. “I hope to plant seeds in people’s hearts of Jesus’ love. So that even if when we are there they do not accept the gift, through God’s power, that seed will eventually grow into salva-

tion.” Donations for the trip can also be mailed to Cooper’s Gap Baptist Church, 730 Coopers Gap Rd, Mill Spring, N.C. 28756. Donors are asked to include “Japan Mission Trip” on the memo line. Donations are tax-deductible.

This year, though some vendors were unable to set up because of early-morning rain showers, those 72 who did, enjoyed cloudy, but mild, conditions, punctuated by occasional rain and a stream of visitors. This year’s event, driven by the SBA, and funded by a long list of sponsors, was dedicated to the memory of artist Johnny Waddill. Waddill, who passed away March 1, 2013, had once permitted the use of his painting of a summer festival in Saluda. Since 2006, that image has been used as the branding of the Saluda Arts Festival. Among other works, the Saluda Center, held a collection of Waddill’s art on Saturday. Birdhouses made from reclaimed barn metal and cedar, hand-made pottery and greeting cards, paintings, photographs and booths filled with individuallycrafted clothing items and wood work, were among the 70-plus displays attracting local residents and visitors. Mike Merritt of Travelers Rest, S.C., displayed his birdhouses. “I’ve done art all my life,”

Merritt explained, but he also noted that his present business was in part, a product of increasingly lean times as a carpenter. “When the jobs dried up, I had to do something.” Jackson reported near closing time that, “It’s been an awesome day,” even despite the rain. “Everybody has been in a great mood. We worked through the rain,” Jackson said. “People came out in droves (evidenced by most parking spaces along and near Main Street filled with vehicles).” Jackson and other volunteers had a booth to help visitors, and also patrolled the scene, taking a pulse of the event, and transporting those who were unable to walk well. Sol Driven Train and the Clay Ross Band performed music appealing to all age groups in the pavilion at McCreery Park. Artists displayed their work in tents up and down Main Street and in the park. Perhaps the spirit of the day, as Jackson noted, was best expressed by a few young children splashing or otherwise carrying on in the occasional puddle. “We really made it work,” continued Jackson. “Everybody has had a great attitude. I guess one rain day every 10 years isn’t bad.”

Landrum prepping for Nov. election by Samantha Hurst

While Landrum residents might not have Nov. 5 on their radars yet, city and county officials do. Spartanburg County Office of Registrations and Elections director Henry Laye discussed changes to elections during the May 13 Landrum City Council meeting. Spartanburg County now runs Landrum’s election process because the state passed a law requiring municipal commissioners to be certified. Getting municipal commissioners certified required a $1,500 to $1,700 expense for the city even if volunteers carpooled to Columbia to attend courses. “Your general population will not notice any change,” Laye said. All Landrum voters will continue to vote at the Landrum United Methodist Church. Candidates however will no longer need to obtain petitions with a certain percentage of the population approving their candidacy. Instead, anyone wishing to run for a Landrum municipal

office must pay appropriate filing fees at Landrum City Hall and complete statements of intention and economic interest. The fee to run for mayor is $200 and to run for council is $100. Filing begins on July 5 at noon and ends Aug. 7 at noon. Up for election this year are Mayor Robert Briggs and the council seats of Jan Horton, Billy Inman and Don Smith. Elections for District 1 school trustees will also be on the Nov. 5 ballot. A statewide law going into affect this year also requires voters to show a South Carolina photo ID when voting. “This act will not disenfranchise anybody; they will still be able to vote,” Laye said. Five forms of photo ID will be accepted, including a drivers license, SC photo ID, military ID or veterans admin ID, passport or voter registration card with photo on it. Voter registration IDs with photos can be obtained by going to the voter registration office located at 366 North Church Street, Spartanburg, S.C. 29303.

Attwool shares handmade happiness

(continued from page 2)

Good Neighbors by Kiesa Kay by Kiesa Kay

Kim Attwooll squirts water onto heavy paper and loads her brush with light lilac. She touches brush to paper, and the pigment blooms to wherever the water touches the paper. “I’m not trying anything special,” Attwooll says. “I’m knocking color into puddles. I’ll put my opera color here, and shadows form where the light’s not hitting. Then one more pass with the dark purple. I use Cheap Joe’s royal amethyst. He’s a chemist but now owns Cheap Joe’s Art Supplies. Joe Miller, I learned so much from him – like, don’t paint individual trees, paint masses of them.” Attwooll paints prolifically and playfully. Her Miracle Wedge brush definitely has been her longtime favorite; 98 percent of her work has been painted with the same, tidy brush. “So I’m knocking color into a puddle, then pouncing the green into it,” Attwooll says, as a lovely lilac with green leaves appears. “With wet and wet, the colors are marrying on the paper. Look at that quinacridon gold with the opera. I’m letting them explode, then softening the edges.” She swirls her brush in water and then pulls it along the edge of a line, till the color almost disappears. It’s as if a shout has become a gentle whisper. The paintings seem much like her flower garden, bold and full of a glowing light. Attwooll’s husband’s an Englishman and a master gardener. They met after she went across the ocean to attend art college in Liverpool, England. “We came to the States on a working holiday in 1973, and simply never moved back to England,” Attwooll says. “We came to Tryon in 2010. My mom and dad live in Tryon.

Greeks used melted beeswax to seal their boats. They soon discovered that pigments and hardeners could be added to the wax and their caulk became a means of decoration. A thousand or so years after the Greeks, Egyptian painters used the medium to decorate mummies and to create portraits and icons. For many years, the method was essentially lost and forgotten. Encaustic painters Diego Rivera, Jasper Johns and others revived the medium in the 20th century. The advent of heating tools made the use of the medium far easier and encaustic painting has once again become popular. The process: clear or pigmented beeswax is mixed with natural tree resin, which acts as a hardening agent. The wax is then melted, and brushed onto a substrate using a paintbrush or other tools. Each layer of wax must be fused with the layer below using

Local artist Greg Wright has a new encaustic art exhibit at the Holy Cross Gallery. Wright has had a lifelong interest in art, architecture and design. With a degree in architecture, Greg worked and lived in Atlanta until retiring to Tryon about seven years ago. After retiring from his job, Wright was searching for his artistic muse and found it last fall when the Upstairs Artspace offered a class in encaustic painting in conjunction with their exhibit “Heated Exchange.” While working with wax poses certain challenges, Wright loves the flexibility of working with encaustic and the variety of tools and materials that can be used to create a finished piece. The word “encaustic” literally means “to burn in.” Encaustic refers to both the paint and the process of painting with melted wax. Encaustic painting originated thousands of years ago. Ancient
