will operate two shuttle vans, which will leave from the Saluda Fire Department on Greenville Street at 11 a.m., and go to and from the park as needed. Among the improvements at Twin Lakes are an enlarged beach, better drainage from the upper lake to the lower, and safety additions to the sliding board at the edge of the upper lake. The steep slide drops travelers into shallow water. Outgoing SCLT President Betsy Burdett noted the importance of the sliding board for children who are uncomfortable in the water. “Kids who are afraid of water will lose their fear,” noted Burdett. “The thrill of the sliding board is greater than their fear of water. They get water in their face (when they land in the shallow water).” SCLT members, aided by private contractors, have worked to make Twin Lakes safe and enjoyable for visitors, while enhancing the facility and providing nearby recreation. Saluda Community Land Trust members have worked hard to prepare their Twin Lakes Park for visitors this summer. Back in April, while contractors installed a pipe in the upper lake to regulate water levels there, SCLT board member David Prudhomme helped clear rocks from the expanded beach area. Those rocks were used to help stabilize other ground in the park. (photo submitted)

erty. In 2012, younger members of the Wilkes family donated the land to SCLT, which will maintain it to provide recreation to local residents, while keeping it as a public park in perpetuity. SCLT’s conservation easement restricts future development, preserves the forest surrounding the lake, and safeguards water quality of the lakes and of a tributary of the Green River. SCLT and Carolina Mountain Land Trust have partnered to protect the land. Do you have an interesting story of an experience at the park? Those who do are encouraged to share them, said Burdett, “We would like to have their story.”
While a public facility, Twin Lakes is available by reservation only. “It’s always been reservationonly,” said Burdett. “It always will be reservation-only.” Scout groups have used the park, as have schools for graduation events. Weddings and birthdays have been celebrated there. Burdett noted that groups and families can reserve Twin Lakes by the half or full day. Anyone interested in renting the park may call SCLT at 828-749-1560. Parking is limited, and renters are responsible for the key. Those interested in attending the June 15 event are encouraged to wear bathing suits, to take towels, picnic blankets, family and friends. The Saluda Fund at Polk County Community Foundation supports the event.

Summer Tracks opens with tribute to Simone June 7 at Roger’s Park in Tryon The Peggy Ratusz Band opens the 2013 Summer Tracks Concert Series on June 7 in Roger’s Park with a special tribute to Nina Simone. Simone, who was born in Tryon in 1933 and died in France in 2003, continues to be celebrated worldwide for her music and her activism. Often introduced as “The High Priestess of Soul,” she was classically trained but is best known for her work in Blues, Jazz, Pop and Soul. Today, musicians from every genre claim Simone as an important influence. To honor such a musical legacy, The Peggy Ratusz Band has put together an evening of Simone’s most loved works. In addition, bandleader and chanteuse Peggy Ratusz has invited vocalist Rockell Scott to join her at the microphone to blend their versatile and emotive voices in this celebration. Blues fans can count on being treated to such Simone favorites as “Sugar In My
Bowl,” “Turn Me On” and “Ain’t No Use.” Fans of Simone’s Jazz performance can look forward to “Just In Time,” “Love Me Or Leave Me,” and “My Baby Just Cares For Me.” And everyone will enjoy Ratusz and Scott’s interpretation of the songs that made the world pay attention when Nina Simone took the stage, songs such as “I Put A Spell On You, “See Line Woman,” “Save Me,” and many more. Adding to the powerful vocal performances will be The Peggy Ratusz Band: Dr. William Bares on the piano, the vibrating string bass of Zack Page, and Justin Watt on drums. Ratusz and her band have become a favorite in local Jazz and Blues circles. They enjoy a robust following in their home base of Asheville and throughout the region. As with all Summer Tracks concerts, the show is free, though a voluntary donation at the gate

is encouraged. Audience donations along with the generous sponsorships of local businesses and individuals make these shows possible. JR’s wood-fired pizzas, water and soft drinks will be for sale. Summer Tracks is produced by the Town of Tryon in affiliation with Peter Eisenbrown of Blockparty Productions. The popular and well-attended series attracts people from all over the region. Last year, the concerts drew an estimated 2,000 people to downtown Tryon. Well, probably the main reason i am a Baptist is because my parents are Baptist and i was loved and accepted in that congregation. While in seminary i was exposed to a variety of Christian traditions and began truly to consider and, at times, reconsider my theological stances as well as all the things i had been taught or “caught” during my formative years in church. i grew up in a church that had women deacons and supported me unconditionally in my application process at seminary. i also served as a summer youth minister at two nC Baptist congregations during my col-
lege years. So i did not realize what a daunting task it would be for a female to find a place of service after graduation from seminary. as a result, i began to look for places to serve outside of Baptist congregations. for about 12 years i served in the united methodist Church and i served almost 15 years in the Christian Church (disciples of Christ). i finally received the opportunity to serve a Baptist congregation in 2009 and today i am privileged to serve through the congregation of tryon first Baptist. as a Christian who happens to be a Baptist, the most im(continued on page 9)

Riders from the around the state are expected at Harmon Classics by Kirk Gollwitzer
The Harmon Classics third Annual Summer Classic Horseshow is scheduled for June 14-16. Lewis Pack, the show’s organizer, expects 200 horses to fill the stalls at the Foothills Equestrian Center (FENCE). “We expect to see riders from as far as Charleston, Charlotte, and Asheville, among other places,” said Pack. For scheduling reasons the event will be held at FENCE rather than Harmon Field. “Regardless of the location the Harmon Classics has lived up to its name,” said Pack. According to Pack, Harmon Classics will be dedicating much of the proceeds to the Equestrian Aid Foundation (EAF). EAF is an organization whose mission is to provide financial support to anyone in the horse world who is severely injured in a catastrophic accident or suffering from a life threatening illness. Pack sites two of his personal friends who have been direct ben-
eficiaries of EAF. “Ashlyn Bell suffered a tragic fall while trail riding in the first couple of days of January 2013. She cracked four vertebrae in her back, broke all but one rib, and had a collapsed lung on top of that! She underwent a couple of surgeries, and I’m very happy to say that she is still alive,” says Pack. Pack also spoke of another friend from Baltimore, Md., who was stricken with cancer and is on the upswing. Pack said “Linda Andrisani is a well-known judge in the Hunter world. Linda is doing much better and is expected to be a judge in next year’s Harmon Classic,” said Pack. The cost of hosting the Harmon Classic can be lofty, requiring a headcount of at least 20 people, including a medic, vet and farrier. Pack is no stranger to the horse show world. “I grew up showing horses, judging competition and managing events all over the coun(Continued on page 14)
