Daystar Enterprises Inc. purchased the building and property for $50,000 with the county paying $950 in settlement costs. Commissioners decided to put the money towards an industrial park plan and is giving the money to the county’s economic tourism development commission (ETDC). ETDC member Bob Morgan told commissioners during the May 31 meeting that Polk needs a county owned industrial park. He said it’s much more difficult for the county to sell a concept than to sell a physical property to a potential business. Morgan said he’s not advocating the county construct a building, but he envisions a well laid out park with utilities and landscaping for potential businesses to be able to locate. He asked commissioners for the money to be used for planning of an industrial park.

6/6/13 8:42 AM

“However it is done please let us have the funds so we can get about the task of developing jobs,” said Morgan. After vacating the JerveyPalmer building the county originally tried to donate it to the Town of Tryon. Tryon ended up declining the offer after the exchange became too complicated. The building was originally constructed in 1929 as the first St. Luke’s Hospital. A new hospital was constructed in Columbus and opened in 1973 when the hospital gave the county the Jervey-Palmer building after the county approved a bond to pay for the new hospital. It has not yet been made public what plans Daystar Enterprises has for the 17,777 square foot Jervey-Palmer building that is located on 4.92 acres of land along Carolina Drive. Daystar Enterprises also purchased the former Grover Plant in Lynn last year with plans to create retail spaces there.

Homer Carder

To the editor: Notice of the recent passing of Homer Carder included a reasonably complete summary of his life, but there’s so much more that can, and should, be reported to give others a much better insight into this remarkable person. For starters, he could have served as the perfect Poster Boy for The Greatest Generation, a model citizen and a perfect gentleman. During WWII, Homer piloted a Piper Cub as a field artillery observer in the European Theater. That was hazardous duty, indeed, but it may have had an element of comedy about it as well. Homer was a large man, well over 6 ft.; the plane

was tiny. Getting in and out of the sardine-can cabin must have been a sight to behold. And, of course, he sat on a piece of armor plate to protect himself from small arms fire. Like so many others of The Greatest Generation, Homer returned to civilian life and launched a successful business career. He and his wife, Wendy, were a devoted couple who enriched their lives - and the lives of many others - when they both became trained chefs and connoisseurs of fine wine. To be invited to The Carder’s for dinner was an unforgettable event. To have known Homer as a golfer, a devoted husband and as a friend, is equally unforgettable. Homer was a one-of-akind human being. His passing leaves a huge void. – Bill Wuehrmann, Tryon

Polk County’s unemployment rate continues to drop by Samantha Hurst

Polk County saw a 0.4 decrease in its unemployment rate for the month of April, maintaining one of the lowest rates in the state. The 6.6 percent unemployment rate for the month almost amounts to a point difference from this time last year when

the county’s unemployment rate was 7.4 percent. Polk County’s unemployment rate has steadily declined since it hit 10 percent in January 2010, according to the Polk County Economic Tourism Development Commission’s 2012-2013 review (full review available at www.polkedc.com). The review also showed that eight
