ment or board, but would instead go through the process the county utilizes to adopt ordinances that are unrelated to zoning. The request will have to be handled through the board of commissioners, with county planner Cathy Ruth saying she has forwarded Berg’s letter to commissioners. “While it is possible to amend our zoning ordinance to incorporate noise standards, I understand the citizen who is concerned about noise at his residence lives in an unzoned area of the county,” Berg said. “Therefore, if we were to consider amending the existing zoning ordinance to incorporate noise standards rather than have a stand alone noise ordinance, those standards would not be applicable to the area in which he resides.” About a dozen residents attended the planning board meeting held in May who said they have neighbors shooting guns and revving engines through the night. A petition with approximately 30 signatures was also presented to

the planning board. Silver Creek Community resident Ronald Deal told planning board members he has people next door playing loud music to the point to where he has to wear earphones in his home and that he can’t sleep. Silver Creek resident Don Yarbrough spoke of a person shooting a gun behind his house and another shooting a gun in front of his house just before the meeting last month to the point he was afraid to go out of his door. Some planning board members were sympathetic of the concerns and had plans to invite the sheriff to the June meeting to discuss what type of noise regulations could be enforceable. Polk County approved a noise ordinance in June 2004, but it was rescinded later that year after the then sheriff said he couldn’t enforce the ordinance the way it was written. The 2004 noise ordinance included decibels, which was the enforcement issue. The matter will now have to go to the board of commissioners, which commissioners can address during a regular meeting.

St. Luke’s Hospital presents Defeat Dizziness seminar Do you have a problem with the room spinning? Do you have to sit down right after you stand up? If you answered yes, you may benefit from a health talk sponsored by the Outpatient Rehab Center at St. Luke’s Hospital. The vestibular system includes the parts of the inner ear and brain that help control balance and eye movements. Vestibular disorders can result if the system is damaged by disease, aging or

injury and are often associated with vertigo, dizziness, imbalance and spatial disorientation. Not all symptoms will be experienced by every person with an inner ear disorder, and other symptoms are possible. An inner ear disorder may be present even in the absence of obvious or severe symptoms. It is important to note that most of these individual symptoms can also be caused by other unrelated conditions. The type and severity of symp-

toms can vary considerably, and be frightening and difficult to describe. People affected by certain symptoms of vestibular disorders may be perceived as inattentive, lazy, overly anxious or seeking attention. They may have trouble reading or doing simple arithmetic. Functioning in the workplace, going to school, performing routine daily tasks or just getting out of bed in the morning may be difficult for some people.

Learn more about defeating dizziness and poor balance by attending the discussion led by Jamie Cehlar, DPT, physical therapist with St. Luke’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Center on Tuesday, June 25 from 1 – 3 p.m. in the St. Luke’s Hospital Library. The program is free and spaces are limited. Call 828-894-2408 to reserve your spot. Light refreshments will be served. – article submitted by Jennifer Wilson

Produce to people: Living off local organic farms through CSA This week, summer is officially here, and in addition to farmers markets blossoming in produce, the power of direct farm subscriptions through joining a local CSA is here. Don’t know yet what a CSA is? Fear not. Today’s column can inform and connect you with Polk County’s local organic CSA. The idea of Community Supported Agriculture has Japanese roots in an innovative system of pre-arranged, pre-paid produce delivery known as teikei in the early 1970s. Teikei – which means “cooperation,” or in this context “food with a farmer’s face” – started as an initiative of a few families near Kobe who were concerned with pesticide usage on their food. These folks later formed the early Japanese Organic Agriculture Association. European-style, subscription produce “share” programs also began around this same time. CSA

did not reach the U.S. until the to or at the very beginning of a mid-1980s when a farmer named CSA share season. Foothills Children’s Chorus launches under leadership of Tena Greene Tena Greene and Tryon Little Theater are proud to announce the formation of the Foothills Children’s Chorus. Greene, a native of Polk County, possesses a passion for music. She has a masters of music in voice performance from Converse College, is an avid performer of musical theater, opera oratorio and recital, and is also a voice teacher and technician. Grateful to have received support and encouragement from the local community to reach her goals, she is now excited to give area children an opportunity to sing and realize their potential. Through the generosity of the Polk County Community Foundation and a newly created free community events grant, Greene will spearhead the first Foothills Children’s Chorus. The chorus will give area youngsters, aged 8 – 13, the chance to engage in music through the summer, learn the foundations of singing and most of all, have fun collaborating with their peers. The end goal is a children’s community concert on Sept. 10, as a salute to America for Labor Day. After that, work starts on Christmas music for another concert in early December.

“Singing is a joy for me, and if any child out there has a passion to sing, or wishes they could learn to sing, I hope to bring them some joy of their own.” -- Tena Greene

“Singing is a joy for me, and if any child out there has a passion to sing, or wishes they could learn to sing, I hope to bring them some joy of their own. Singing is a great confidence and character builder, and even more so when you’re part of a group that supports one another,” says Greene. “I know that summer schedules can be busy, and some won’t be able to come to every rehearsal, but that’s fine. Everyone is welcome to attend as often as they can make it. We’ll have fun and share our talent with the community.” Rehearsals start Monday, June 24 at Sunnydale, 334 South Trade Street in Tryon (next door to the Dollar General store) from 7 – 8 p.m., and are free.
