Remembering a committed woman: Bos Vining by Samantha Hurst

Marjorie “Bos” Vining’s daughter-inlaw Cathy said the matriarch of the Vining family and the Tryon Daily Bulletin kept a sign that read, “Behind every successful man is a hardworking woman.” The same could be said for any successful family, and in this case too, a beloved community newspaper. Bos Vining, who alongside her husband

Seth Vining Jr., helped run the Bulletin for several decades, died Saturday, July 6. (See page 11 for her obituary) Seth and Bos moved to Tryon in 1951 after they had married and were expecting their oldest son, Seth A. Vining. Seth and brother, Jim, said their mother was committed first and foremost to

her family. In fact, they said two of them were out of school before Bos went to work at the Bulletin. “She would drop everything – no matter what was going on with the Bulletin – family always came first,” Jim said. Then she headed back to the Bulletin and worked until 2 in the morning, if that is what was required, he said. When asked why they thought their father and mother were so fiercely passionate about the production of the Bulletin, Seth said part of it certainly was about keeping the family heritage alive. “I remember stuffing inserts right out there in that hallway,” Seth recalled as he noted that they all contributed to the Bulletin’s production in some way in those days. Jim said Seth Vining Jr. and Bos also felt they provided a service by connecting the community and selling the area to others. The paper strove to positively encourage people through the news it printed and the sons believe their parents and grandfather had a lot to do with fostering a strong community feel. Jim said, “It shows you the power of a small town newspaper.” They wanted the good news printed, said the Vining’s youngest son David, and they presented it in shorter articles because they knew people had busy lives.

Bos, much like her husband, saved everything about community. She had an issue of a Detroit, Mich. paper that once mentioned Tryon, her sons said, and an old magazine with a piece of tape marking a feature on a local restaurant. Cathy said she even heard news about their town of Gainesville, Ga. before they would know it. “The way they ran [the Bulletin], it was an every day commitment,” Jim said. Seth Vining Jr. was named editor in 1968, with the transfer of the Bulletin to follow in the early 1970s. “They were really married to this job,” said David. So, when they retired, their sons said Bos and Seth took a number of tours to experience the sites they hadn’t had the opportunity to enjoy during all those years of hard work. “Camp Grandmother” – the summer weeks when grandkids trekked to Tryon – was a special time for Bos, as well, her sons and daughter-in-laws said. “She was a great mother-inlaw and she devoted everything to being a grandmother and greatgrandmother,” Pat Vining, Jim’s wife, said. “She was always there for us – if we needed help with something she was there.” The Bulletin came a close second in Bos’ life, but never first, her sons said of her commitment to being a mother, grandmother and eventually, great-grandmother.

We worked too hard, but we had the greatest crew Editor’s note: The 75th anniversary edition of the Tryon Daily Bulletin recounts many milestones in the newspaper’s history including several of Bos Vining’s memories of life putting out the paper. Bos wrote an article titled, ‘We worked too hard, but we had the greatest crew.’ The Tryon Daily Bulletin staff decided to reprint that article, first printed in January 2003, to allow Bos to tell her memories in her own words: Since we have had several snow falls recently, several years ago we had an unusual snow fall and our crew could not get into the office on Friday, so we decided to print Monday’s paper on Saturday. A couple from Maine who were staying in Asheville came to town and came in our office to inquire as to why so many stores were closed. I told them that the people in the county couldn’t get out, so why open up? Then they wanted to know why the streets had not been scraped. My reply was, “We only have a big snow about every ten years so why tie up money for the equipment?” About the Curb Reporter, Mr. Vining was always seen walking up and down the street with a pad of paper and a pen in his hand. He would stop and speak to everyone and ask about their families and if they had any news. He would pick out some of the headlines in the papers for the “curb” and if he saw a display in a store window, he would call attention to it so others could enjoy it, too. When I first came to Tryon folks would barter for subscriptions. A farmer brought a live chicken to the house while we were eating lunch and wanted to give us the bird in exchange for the paper. Dad told him if he would kill it, he would take it. I didn’t work at the paper then, but I assured Dad I could clean it and cut it up. His comment to me was,

“How can a city girl know how to do that?” I didn’t tell him until after I had completed the task that I had never done it before, but I had observed many chickens being cleaned. Seth tells me that when he was growing up the movie theater would give them passes in exchange for advertising; consequently, I think he saw every movie several times. Through the years we had press troubles. One night we fed the Kelly-C press by hand in order to get the paper printed. Jerry Lawrence stayed with us to 2:30 a.m. to get the paper out. (He was just helping us out.) After we got the paper together we had to deliver them to Campobello, Columbus and Mill Spring. Because they locked the Tryon Post Office up at night, we had to get the police to open up for us. When new people came to town and would subscribe to the paper, we would interview them so we could introduce them to the community. One couple who spent time in the spring and fall in the area, when they returned to their home in the north they would correspond with the new people and when they moved here they already knew a number of people. We always tried to make the post office by five o’clock so the paper could be delivered the next day (Our son Jim always had his paper on the right day in Rock Hill, S.C.) I guess we all worked too hard but we had the greatest crew. They stayed with us no matter how long it took. I was the gopher and when we were running late would get dinner for everyone. We may not have let them know that we appreciated their loyalty, but we couldn’t do without them. I remember trying to collect delinquent bills and folks would say they could not get to the office when we were open. My reply was, “We are here almost every night until 11 p.m. and the door is never locked.” That

“They (on the crew) stayed with us no matter how long it took. I was the gopher and when we were running late would get dinner for everyone. We may not have let them know that we appreciated their loyalty, but we couldn’t do without them.” -- Bos Vining

always stumped them. One thing I failed to mention is the support of John Lawrence and the “News Leader.” Whenever we had press problems or anything else, John would print the paper for us until we could get it operating. We may have been in competition but John always came to our rescue.

Saluda native returns to roots at public library Good Neighbor Kiesa Kay

Polk County Library new children’s librarian, Jen Pace, grew up in this county, and her father’s family stretches back for many generations. “My mother’s from Miami,” she says. “My father’s family has been in Saluda for more than a hundred years, so my parents raised their family here.” Having that security gave Pace the freedom to explore the world, only to learn that she belonged back home again. “My favorite quotation comes from JRR Tolkien,” she says. “All who wander are not lost.” Her wanderings took her first to Prague, in the Czech Republic, in the coldest part of winter. Then she hurried to Charleston to live in warmth by the beach, and to Denton, Texas, another warm land. Pace kept adventuring. She went on the Mongolian express from Beijing to Moscow, and she bicycled in Ireland. She found herself in Korea for two years, teaching English. In Korea, she felt the pull of her roots, bringing her back to Polk County again. Her degree in sociology didn’t lend itself well to local employment, so she found an online program in library science from the University of Southern Mississippi. Soon she had a master’s of library and information science, and she felt ready to find work back home. “Being a children’s librarian feels like the best of everything,” Pace declares. “It’s awesome. I love it.”

Through all her journeys, she’s kept good care of her pet tarantula, her friend for 12 years. She gave the spider the name of Malachi, but when the spider laid an egg sac, she discovered Malachi’s female gender. The tarantula might visit the library when she discusses one of her favorite books by Eric Carle, or perhaps at Halloween, but no one will be allowed to hold the spider. “As a defense, she shoots hairs out of her abdomen, and those hairs itch for days. They don’t wash off,” she said. “You can’t hold her, but you can pet her.” More than 120 children signed up for the Summer Reading Program, and Pace has initiated a new program, Fun For Families, for after school and evenings. The program will include hiking, games, cooking classes and activities that families can share together. She has scheduled a movie night for 5:30 p.m. July 18 at the library, and on Aug. 6, the library will host a free picnic at Harmon Field. “A lot of parents work and don’t get to come to the daytime library programs,” Pace says. “I want to offer the chance for everyone to enjoy the library.” She also offers free homework help to any child, tween or teen in the county. She will work oneon-one with anyone who needs help with any school subject. She has read aloud to a child from a Spanish-speaking home whose family didn’t read in English, and she can teach skills in mathematics, reading or other school subjects. Homework help can happen on a walk-in basis during her work hours, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tues-

day and Wednesday, or Thursday, 1-8 p.m. Students also can make appointments for specific times, if they prefer. “I want to instill my love of learning and reading in children in Polk County,” she says. Pace has read 30 books so far this year, reading mostly on the deck at the library during her lunch hour or before she goes to sleep. She has many favorite books for children and young adults, including the Divergent series, the Legend series and Hunger Games – dystopian novels with strong girl characters. “A book has to grab my attention from the beginning,” she says. “I have a lot of books I want to read, so if a book doesn’t captivate me from the beginning, I move on.” As a longtime local, Pace knows good places to hike, bike and swim. She plans to stay here in her dream job, but she will travel from time to time, using her vacation days. She has plans in the works for trips to Greece and Peru. Best of all, she can adventure anywhere in her imagination, every time she opens a new book.

At 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17 there will be an hour1x3 through the long “walk-and-talk” t ends 8/10 by estate two galleries presented executor and art historian Mr. Michael McCue. McCue will speak about the art and life of Guntram Gersch and the public is cordially invited. Bidding will be suspended during this presentation. Hospice volunteers will conduct the silent auction. Bidding for each artwork will begin at $100, with incremental increases of $50. Gersch selected the paintings for this sale as among the best and most representative of his artistic career, which began in the 1960s. His early study at the Art Institute of Chicago focused on ceramics, and so the several ceramics exhibited are of unusual interest.

In addition, there is a selfportrait drawn1x3 on a menu while on-board a 1982 t Swissair flight to the Near East, and a fine steel restarted 7/3/07 table designed by Gersch and executed by noted Tryon crafter William Crowell. Artist Guntram Hans Gersch was born in 1924 at Glatz, Silesia, then in Germany and now in Poland. At the end of his life he lived in both Tryon and in Évianles-Bains, France. He died in the Hôpitaux de Leman at Thonon-les-Bains. His art was exhibited in museums across the US and Europe. To see images of his work and for more information on the artist, as well as the exhibit and sale, visit www.guntramgersch.info/memorialexhibition or email Michael@ CondarPress.com
