Two sections of Blockhouse Steeplechase track washed away by Samantha Hurst

Red dirt crumbled into the rushing water Sunday, July 14 carving out wider and wider ruts in two sections of the FENCE steeplechase track. Two culverts that allowed the Blockhouse Creek to run under the

track gave way sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning, July 12 and 13, taking down mounds of mud and creating unsafe ground conditions in areas of the facility.

Heavy rains cause several road closures in Polk Polk gets 12.51 inches of rain in July so far by Leah Justice

There’s been a lot of talk about Noah’s Ark in recent weeks with many wondering how long the rains can keep up. The area saw the sun shine for most of the day, Monday, July 15 for the first time in 14 consecutive days. The area has seen rain every day, with many days including heavy rains, the month of July for a total of 12.51 inches for the month. The average rainfall in July is 5.27 inches, according to the National Weather Service. The average rainfall for the month of June is 5.38 inches. This year in June, the area received 9.25 inches, with May normally receiving 4.57 inches on average and this May saw 11.3 inches. The results of excessive rains and storms were evident on several roads in Polk County over the weekend, including on Peniel Road where a large gap remains in a culvert that was overrun with water on Saturday, July 13. Peniel Road remains closed between Hugh Champion Road and Hwy. 9. N.C. Department of Transportation (DOT) officials began working on the road Monday, July 15. DOT estimates it will take a few days to complete repairs, according to a report from Polk County Emergency Management. DOT maintenance engineer for

$

Special

Transylvania and Polk counties Ben Williams said Peniel Road is being repaired with a larger pipe, head walls and large amounts of back fill to build the roadbed back. He said the area would be much safer once the repairs are complete. DOT reopened all other roads that were closed over the weekend including Houston Road, John Watson Road, Bill Collins Road and Hwy. 9, near Polk Central Elementary School. DOT officials were out in a heavy rainstorm that hit the area around 4 p.m. Sunday, where Hwy. 9 was closed all day Saturday with a similar scene to Peniel Road. DOT officials said Hwy. 9 had a 20 ft. gap between it due to a culvert being overrun with water sometime early Saturday morning, July 13. The Hwy. 9 closure occurred near Polk Central Elementary School and was reopened after DOT crews worked to rebuild the road from 7 a.m. until midnight Saturday. Hwy. 9 also had areas where rains were so heavy storage buildings were literally moved. One building was pushed and landed in the middle of Hicks McAbee Road, off Hwy. 9 in Mill Spring. There are also three residences at Hawks Landing, off Golf Course Road in Columbus, who were stranded over the weekend, with the only access to their properties being with ATVs or horseback. The Polk County Emergency Services (EMS) is keeping close contact with the residents to ensure they

have everything they need. It is also unknown when the Hawks Landing bridge can be repaired. Local fire and rescue teams were nonstop over the weekend with calls from residents who couldn’t go any further due to roads collapsing and downed trees and power lines. The Tryon Fire Department was called to a tree and power line down Sunday morning on Howard Gap Road with many Tryon area residents being without power much of Sunday as a result. Their power was restored Sunday evening. Tryon officials also responded Sunday morning to a main water line break at Depot and Pacolet Streets downtown. Other areas affected by high waters or road closures over the weekend included Fox Mountain Road, Vista at Riverbank off Sandy Plains Road, John Shehan Road and Whiteside Road. Polk County EMS Director Michael Crater urges residents to not cross standing water because what may look like two feet deep to a driver could in reality be something washed out 10 ft. deep underneath. Crater said emergency management staff was out all weekend checking areas and assessing damage. He also said people should remain cautious this week especially for road failures and trees which are saturated. “We’re doing everything we can,” he said on Sunday as he took the Bulletin on a tour of failed roads throughout the county. “We’re in

overdrive right now.” Crater urged residents to only call 911 for an actual emergency. Residents calling in to report high water or other issues should call the EMS non-emergency line at 828-894-0187. The total rainfall for the year is currently at 40.81 inches of rain, which is much more than normal. A normal average for the year by the end of July is 35.52 inches. The yearly average total for Tryon is 61.77 inches of rain. The most rain in one day the area has received in July, according to the National Weather Service’s Tryon monitoring station, occurred on July 4 at 2.87 inches. Friday, July 12 the area received 2.6 inches of rain, according to the NWS. The area is still nowhere near the record rainfall in a day. On Oct. 25, 1918 the area received 9.05 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Services record data, recorded from 1917 through 2013. The 10th highest precipitation in one day occurred on Aug. 18, 1985 with 6.09 inches of rain. Tryon Riding and Hunt Club president Nancy Wilson said JP Godard arrived on site at 6 a.m. Saturday morning to ensure all of the outdoor rings were in good enough condition for the more than 250 entries traveling to Tryon for this weekend’s horse show. That’s when the gaping holes in the track were found. “We knew we had issues there already with the culverts,” Wilson said. “But Mother Nature has sped us along and now we’ll be able to take care of it faster and better. FENCE president John Boyle said in the past year minor repairs had been made to shore up the strength of the culverts. He said plans were already in the works for work to be done this fall. “We knew there was a limited window as to how long those culverts were going to

last,” Boyle said. Engineering and surveying were to start later this summer with plans for work to begin during the typical break in shows in August. “This is a situation that will benefit us in the end,” Boyle said. “We’ll have the time to get the pipe in, get the turf in place and have a growing season before next May for the 2014 steeplechase.” Wilson said she was amazed to see that none of the facility barns flooded. She said that is to the credit of a three-year-old conservation easement running through the center of FENCE. Nelson said the underbrush and vegetation helped prevent the center of the creek from eroding away. Boyle agreed that it kept a bad situation from getting worse. “This much water for this distance could have divided the (Continued on page 5)

Extreme weather conditions over the weekend caused newly hired Polk County Emergency Services (EMS) Director Michael Crater to begin his employment early. Crater was scheduled to start his new position on Monday, July 15, but worked over the weekend monitoring roads and helping people stranded from washed out roads. Crater was hired by the county following the firing of former EMS director Sandra Halford. Crater has been employed by Polk County EMS since 1994, when he started as a paramedic. Around 1997, Crater became the training officer/supervisor at Polk EMS, a position he held until April 2010. He then took the emergency services coordinator position at the Isothermal Community College, but

remained with Polk EMS as a part-time paramedic. “I just want to have some of the best trained people we Michael Crater can,” Crater said, “to enhance our local resources and work well with all the other agencies and better serve our community.” Crater said people don’t understand the value of volunteers in Polk County who take care of all emergencies filtered through 911. Crater said he is so pleased to come back to Polk EMS as it is home to him. Crater grew up in Polk County and graduated from Tryon High School.

2012-2013 Landrum Cardinal Competition Cheer Squad

Landrum High School cheerleaders host Cheer Camp On Aug. 8-10, the 2013-2014 Landrum High School (LHS) Competition Cheerleading Team will host Cardinal Cheer Camp for children between the ages of 3 and 12. Camp will be held at the LHS auxiliary gym from 6-8 p.m. on Aug. 8 and Aug. 9 and from 9 a.m.-noon on Aug. 10. On Aug. 10, the campers will perform at 11 a.m. in the LHS main gym. Family members are encouraged to attend this performance. The camp offers six hours of

positive and energetic instruction led by the LHS Competition Cheerleading Team. Campers will also receive snacks, an LHS Cardinal Cheer Camp T-shirt, access to the Cardinal Store – stocked with great LHS spirit merchandise, daily appearances from “The Cardinal,” opportunities to win a Landrum High School Spirit Stick, a Cardinal Cheer Camp certificate, free admission to the LHS vs. Broome home football game on Aug. 30, and a sideline performance at the LHS vs. Broome home football

game. The LHS Cheerleading Team is also looking for potential sponsorships from local businesses within the community. The team practices numerous hours to be able to compete at the regional and state level, and the cost to attend these competitions can become quite expensive. Sponsorship entitles the business to a 3x3 company advertisement on the Cardinal Cheer Camp T-shirt (logo, contact name and phone number), announcement of sponsorship at

the LHS Cardinal Cheer Camp Performance, announcement of sponsorship at each home football game and a personal T-shirt. The camp hopes to host more than 60 participants during the three-day event. For more information about camp, camp registration and costs or to sponsor the LHS Competition Cheerleading Team, contact Coach Jennifer Belue at 864304-6617 or Jennifer.Belue@ spart1.org. - article submitted by Jennifer Belue

Local organic microgreens: Size ‘em up We’ve seen baby spinach, baby lettuce, and baby squash prized for their tenderness and cute size but now we’re going micro. Microgreens, or the seedlings of greens, throw a big bunch of vitamins and fiber when added to foods. The advantages of these tiny leaves, less than 14 days old, are how they make vibrant hued garnishes to salads, sandwiches, soups, egg dishes and so on. They can be pea, herb, beet, chard, mustard, radish, broccoli, arugula and cilantro and they are rumored to pack even more vitamins and nutrients than their adult version. Now it seems there is some scientific muster to back that claim. The US Department or Agriculture and the University of Maryland have conducted scientific analysis of nutrients in microgreens and the results are strong. The researchers looked at four groups of vitamins and other phytochemicals – including vitamins C and E and beta carotene – in 25 varieties of microgreens. They found that leaves from almost all of the microgreens had four to six times more nutrients than the mature leaves of the same plant. But there was variation among them – red cabbage was

highest in vitamin C, while the green daikon radish microgreens had the most vitamin E. These findings may give us new insight into plants, because these are tiny little seeds barely exposed to much light at all and yet these compounds are ready to go. Ta l k w i t h m i c r o g r e e n s growers, including our local Yielding Branch Farm in Columbus, as there can be a lot of variation in nutrients, depending on where you grow it, when you harvest it and the soil medium. Chris and Paige at Yielding Branch are permaculture growers who use no artificial inputs or pesticides and begin with non-GMO, organic and heirloom seeds. Chris and Paige will tell you there is already a market for this exceptionally nutritious micro-enterprise and that their sales in local farmers markets and restaurants are growing. “We deliver and cut the greens on-site from the trays that they are grown in,” says Paige Paris, partner and farmer at Yielding Branch. “Chefs’

can cut what they want with scissors right onto the plate, so they are live and fresh.” Microgreens can easily be confused with sprouts, but they are not the same thing. Sprouts are seeds germinated in water just long enough to grow roots, usually 48 hours, and produce a stem and pale underdeveloped leaves. Microgreens on the other hand need soil and sunlight and at least seven days to grow before you can harvest them. Which also allows you to “place your order” of microgreen or mix of greens for a seven-day turnaround and delivery for your personal or professional use. Last week, I didn’t have any salad greens per say, but I had a pound of Yielding Branch microgreens, which I went ahead and added sliced tomato and creamy cucumber salad to and had the most amazing, fresh and alive full lunch plate that was incredibly delicious and filling, down to the last bite. Microgreens may not take over for hearty fully mature greens and salads but they duet beautifully with the creative culinary imagination as well as a simple snack right from the container on their own. Visit yieldingbranch.com for their three local weekly market locations and other offerings.
