Missing man last seen July 21 by Leah Justice
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help locating an “at risk” Columbus man missing since Sunday, July 21. John Steven Buchanan, 62, of 479 Frank Wilson Lane, Columbus, is described as a 5 ft. 10 inch man with blue eyes and brown hair. He was last seen leaving his home around 10 a.m. July 21 driving his white 2008 Ford truck with a NC license plate TNM-5280. Buchanan’s Sam’s Club card was used after he left in Spartanburg, S.C. to purchase gasoline. Det. Sgt. Robert Sieber says the sheriff’s office is working the case and that reports were that Buchanan left in a distraught state of mind. Sieber said according to Buchanan’s wife, he has never done any-

poorest state, she said. “This horse was at the bottom of the scale,” Henry said. “I had first thought she was not going to be strong enough to live another day.” When first checked on by investigators, the horse was suffering from rain rot, was emaciated and was staggering. The horse’s skin also contained several wounds from the rot, according to Henry. Jackie Harris, a horse owner in the community, said she was shocked a horse could be in this state and no one report its condition sooner. “This county is so active and so proactive about its horse industry … how this can happen and it not get reported, that is a bad thing,” Harris said. According to Henry, horses are categorized as livestock under state animal cruelty laws. An owner only has to provide hay and give water to livestock, Henry said. This owner had hay out for the horse, but the hay was very old and the water was rancid green, Henry said. The owner had also called the vet about the horse developing pneumonia, but Henry said it appeared they had not addressed the other issues. “It’s easier somehow when you come across someone who is ignorant of how to take care of a horse,” Henry said. “The frustrating part of this situation is that this woman is educated and has had horses before.” Henry and Harris both acknowledged these cases often occur because an owner has fallen on hard economic times, but doesn’t know where to seek help or is too prideful to seek help. “A lot of people that run out of resources and run out of money no. 1 get very embarrassed and often don’t even realize there are resources out there,” Harris said. “Horses are an expense, this is not just a pet. People that get into something and find themselves in trouble should know there are ways to get help and they shouldn’t feel embarrassment if they need help.”
Henry said many in the community are also reluctant to report concerns because they are afraid the animal owner, often a neighbor, might find out who called. The community needs to understand that they have a responsibility to report concerns, Henry said. “Make a point to step up to the plate so these animals can be checked on,” Harris implored community members. There are currently five animal cruelty investigators appointed by the county commission. To be considered for such a position, the individuals must take a state certified course, which teaches them about the scale of body weight, animal cruelty laws and how to proceed. Henry said it is important for the community to know too that the Foothills Equine Rescue and Assistance (FERA) is available for more than strictly rescues. Henry said FERA assists with providing hay if needed, as well as providing information about feeding and proper care. Donations from the public have recently allowed for a temporary shelter for horses to be built at the Foothills Humane Society. The structure includes run out spaces and two stalls for horses to be housed until a foster home or a permanent home. Henry said is found one pony, rescued from a neglectful situation nine months ago, is currently ready for adoption. If you do suspect a horse or any animal is suffering from abuse or neglect, or if you are interested in fostering or adopting an animal, call the Foothills Humane Society at 828-863-4444. Weekend downpours cause flash flooding concerns by Samantha Hurst
Heavy rains pounded Landrum, Tryon and nearby areas around 3 p.m. Saturday, July 20 creating a sink hole at Tryon Pointe Orthodontics and flooding of several streets. National Weather Service officials said Doppler radar estimated that 3-4 inches of rain fell as of 3:47 p.m. Saturday. The Tryon Water Department reported 2.5 inches between 2-4 p.m., but some Lake Lanier residents claim their rain gauges collected up to 4 inches. Tryon Town Manager Joey Davis said the rains caused flooding of the creek near East Howard Street. He said multiple boat docks on Lake Lanier were under water as well, with what appeared to be a large volume of water flowing over the dam. “Flooding covered East Howard in the 400 and 700 blocks, as well as all of Vaughn Street,” Davis said in an email to Tryon council members. “Tryon Fire responded to the flooding as well as a lightning strike to a house at 62 Maple Street, a person struck by lightning on Skyuka Road, a DOA on Chestnut Street, a sinkhole in the parking lot of Tryon Pointe Orthodontics and one on Lanier Street on Lake Lanier.” Dr. Michael Johnston with Tryon Pointe Orthodontics said he got a text from the owner of the building, Lion Heart Development Corporation, while he was away at the beach this weekend. Johnston said, “if you look in the hole a large drainage grate was never connected to the pipe running under the road when it was worked on by DOT.” Johnston said despite the sinkhole his office would be open on Thursday as usual. Caution tape currently blocks off the parking lot on the right side to prevent other vehicles from getting too close to the sinkhole. A handful of other businesses

in town also experienced issues from the rain. Sheila McCormick and Bill Sowers, owners of ServiceMasters in Spartanburg, live in Green Creek. So, they saw the affects of the heavy rain professionally and personally. “We have [had a high volume of calls] over the past few weeks,” McCormick said. “I think the main thing to take out of this is that if people have any kind of damage, they take care of it now rather than later. Later they could end up with more damage than they can afford to fix.” McCormick said it’s important to make sure your drainage system is draining away from the house. She said if it is not and the water gets into the home it could cause damage to the subflooring or even health concerns from mold, which can spawn within 24-48 hours.

Helen Vetter Brady, 95, passed away peacefully at home on July 21, 2013. Born in Newark, N.J. on October 3, 1917, she was the daughter of the late George and Nellie Vetter. Married on August 31, 1946 to Joseph T. Brady, who passed away in 1993, she was a graduate of Our Lady of the Valley High School in Orange, N.J. Helen worked for New Jersey Bell Telephone in Newark, N.J., Radio Corporation of America in Cedar Knolls, N.J., and Realty World in Lehigh Acres, Fla. She lived with her husband and family in Morris Plains, N.J. before moving to Florida in 1977. In February of 2004 she moved to her son’s house in Mill Spring. Surviving are her son, Glenn M. Brady of Mill Spring, N.C., and her daughter, Kathleen A. Brady and Richard J. Harter of Cream Ridge, N.J. Helen was an avid her entire life and / The World ’s sbowler mallesT daily NeWspaper enjoyed a few 200+ games. She also enjoyed photography and belonged to the Lehigh Acres and Carolina Camera Clubs, where her photos won numerous awards. Her warm personality drew
m a n y friends, young and old, over the years. She was active in community groups and women’s clubs in New Jersey, Florida and North Carolina. Helen got her driver’s license in 1934 and drove proudly for the next 79 years! Jackson fundraiser at C & T Martial Arts Academy Charles and Tammy Hill, owners of C & T Martial Arts Academy, will host a bake sale and yard sale for student Jacob Jackson of Landrum. This 16-year-old student will soon undergo surgery to remove a brain tumor.
Jacob is the son of Pastor Shane and Michele Jackson of Landrum Independent Baptist Church. Tammy Hill spoke to students recently of putting together a love offering. They will collect monies for Jacob and his family to help pay for

Pan Little speaks of disaster preparedness to Columbus Lions Little began her presentation to the Columbus Lions by asking whether they knew how to get out in case of fire. If they could feel their way without lights? Disaster preparedness is gathering information, then formulating a plan of action. In our society, the very young and very old are most at risk, and fire and disease are their biggest dangers. Little appealed for Lions to become Red Cross volunteers to be trained to teach young children, using their materials which include Cool Cat, Scrubby Bear and Patsy Possum hand puppets to “talk” to the children. TFAC receives grants for equipment The Polk County Community Foundation recently awarded two grants to Tryon Fine Arts Center — one for a movie projector for the auditorium and one for sound and light equipment for both the amphitheater and the main theater. The two grants combined funding from the Mary F. Kessler Fund, the Stephanie and Sam White Fund and the Unrestricted Fund to provide new technical support for programs presented at the arts center. Tryon Fine Arts Center has had a large movie screen for many years that is still in good shape. Because of the grant award for a digital projector, a film series will start in the fall of 2013. “A film committee has been working diligently with the help of Barry Flood of the Tryon Movie Theater. Flood has provided sound advice on what to show that will fill a need in our community,” says TFAC Executive Director Beth Child. “We look forward to having filmgoers relax inside our beautiful, cool and comfortable theater to see unusual films at low cost.” The funding will also provide stage lighting for performances in the newly constructed Peterson Amphitheater. This portable dimming system can be used both inside and outside and is critical for creating a variety of colors and looks for any presentation, whether it be drama, poetry, talks, solos or music groups. Sound quality has now improved in the large theater with the purchase of sub woofers, monitors and loudspeakers that are all of the same type. This results in a professional sound production and reduces the need to cobble together vari-

To further enhance the improvements made possible by the generous grant from Polk County Community Foundation, the Board of Directors voted to purchase a digital sound board using funding from the bequest of Tryon resident Paula Joyce to complete the upgrade of TFAC’s sound capabilities. Child states, “Already we have used this sound board for three of our own concerts and two Summer Tracks shows — this amazing piece of equipment allows Tryon Fine Arts Center to provide touring artists and our audiences with the mix of sound they expect from larger venues in other cities.” Child concluded, “Because of the generosity of funds that donors set up at the Polk County Community Foundation, our 44-year-old arts complex on Melrose Avenue has taken a giant leap forward in what we can offer to our community in the performing and media arts.” Opened in February 1969, Tryon Fine Arts Center was the vision of community-minded philanthropists, artists and businessmen and today provides opportunities and facilities for the Carolina Foothills community in order to advance experience and participation in the arts. - article submitted by Beth Child

Local students return from Cannon Music Camp Six local high school students with scholarships from the Laurel Lake Music Society of Columbus recently participated in seven different music and vocal programs at the conclusion of the Cannon Music Camp in Boone, N.C. Those attending were: Dakota Cox and Lee Jackson, Landrum High School, and Emily Gage, Colby McGuinn, Jessica Woods and Spencer Taunton of Polk County High School.

Promoting health and happiness in this community has been a focus for David Staley. Through his work with Unity in Community, he has inspired people of all ages to have fun and enjoy healthy living. “I don’t want to pass through this world without enriching the lives of other people,” Staley said. “It’s the dash that counts – that dash between the birthdate and the death date on the tombstone. I want that dash to be a time of touching the lives of other people, being somebody who gives back.” Staley, a photographer and substitute teacher, lives by the motto, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Unity in Community strives to improve the quality of life for all people in the community. Staley has been instrumental in working on many local projects including Praising in the Park, Pound the Pavement, the Senior Citizen Christmas Social and Healthy Polk County. “People need something to look forward to doing, something local,” he said. “I wanted to create opportunities for things to do right here, so people wouldn’t have to travel outside the county. The Tryon Garden Club, North Carolina’s fourth oldest garden club, is celebrating its 85th anniversary by combining its love of Pearson’s Falls—purchased by the club in 1931 and now in the Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Gardens and Polk County’s number one tourist attraction—and its pride in the abundance of talented local artists eager to reveal the beauty of the falls.
