This year’s fourth annual PolkFresh Farm Tour is looking for participating farms. The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 21. Rounding up supplies for back to school by Samantha Hurst
Parents’ jaws drop about this time each year as the cash register totals up the expense of outfitting their children’s backpacks for the new school year. To make sure all kids have the tools they need, Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry, as well as local churches such
as Tryon United Methodist Church (TUMC), plan to host events to provide bags filled with the necessary items. On Aug. 3 Outreach will host its annual event that distributes school supplies to hundreds of students in Polk County whose families might not have the resources.

Anyone interested in helping to shape the life of a child, may make a donation of school supplies by dropping off any of the following at the Polk County High School cafeteria July 29-31. School supplies needed: New book bags (all ages) Wide ruled and college ruled paper Pencils, pens, pencil boxes and pouches Colored pencils, markers and highlighters Rulers, pencil sharpeners and index cards Crayons and dry erase markers Composition notebooks and binders Notebook tab dividers and pocket folders Glue sticks and safety scissors To contribute financially, visit Outreach at www.tboutreach.org or mail your check to P.O. Box 834, Columbus, N.C. 28782. If you have questions, contact Michelle Reedy at 828894-2988. TUMC will host a Back to School Bash event Aug. 10 offering 300 bags of supplies to students from kindergarten to high school. Organizer Bob Bailey said TUMC began its back to school event three years ago. He said
the church felt it would be a good thing after seeing it done in another area. “There are a lot of poor people in the area that could benefit,” Bailey said. “We’re always looking for a way to reach out to our community – we felt this would be a different way to help kids. We like to think of this day as a safe haven where everything is free and they would see we care about them.” The church’s event will also include a hot dog cookout with chips, drinks, snow cones, popcorn and desserts for all who attend. Haircuts and winter coats will be provided for those students in need of them. There will also be inflatable play structures for children. Bailey said last year about 278 kids came out for the event. He said about 70 kids got haircuts. There are three hairstylists offering haircuts and about 100 coats available. “People are so appreciative when they come and so that makes it a blessing too for everyone who works it,” Bailey said. A Free Community Fund Grant through the Polk County Community Foundation covers about half of the Back to School Bash, which Bailey said helps the church assist as many families as possible. The event will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., at Tryon United Methodist Church, located at 195 New Market Road, Tryon.

Henson’s Collision dealing with second sinkhole from rains by Samantha Hurst
Steve Henson of Henson’s Collision said the 4 inches of rain that fell near the South Carolina/ North Carolina state line Saturday, July 20 caused the second sinkhole in as many weeks to swallow part of
his business’ parking lot. “We felt the ground falling out from under our feet and then we started hearing a pop, pop, pop and realized it was the concrete crumbling from under the build-
ing,” Henson said. Henson said Saturday afternoon when the heavy rain began to fall, he was driving back into town near his building and saw what looked like a river flowing down
the street. The business had just repaired its parking area after one sink hole from rains the weekend prior. He said he and the man

working to make repairs went behind the garage to look at the bank where water was eroding away the ground and began feeling the dirt crumbling. Henson said water was running in under the walls and when the earth eroded away it began taking part of the garage with it. The portion of the garage attached to the main building had to be jacked up and reinforced with concrete. Henson’s is currently working to repair its property with plans to replace the 40-year-old galvanized pipe currently running underneath the parking lot and refill eroded areas. Henson’s Collision is one of several businesses affected by the heavy and frequent rains that have fallen over the last month. Another sink hole took out part of Tryon Pointe Orthodontic’s parking lot the same day. Both businesses remain open to customers.
The second sinkhole behind Henson’s Collision took down the foundation and part of the side garage. (photo by Samantha Hurst)

Local artist, Van Vynckt, shows at Gallery Internationale
Vicki Van Vynckt
Gallery Internationale in Flat Rock is pleased to announce that they will be hosting “Art from the Heart, Poems from the Soul,” an exhibit of art and poetry by Tryon artist Vicki Van Vynckt. The show is celebrating Van Vynckt’s 30 years of painting in oils and writing poetry. It is being dedicated to her grandfather, who also was an artist and poet. Included in the exhibit will be 3040 of Van Vynckt’s landscapes and skyscapes with poems along with a self portrait and landscape painting by her grandfather. Van Vynckt earned a degree in fine art from The University of Southern Indiana and later took classes through The Atelier art school in Minneapolis. There she learned classical drawing techniques and plein-air painting. Her paintings have been displayed in more than 60 exhibitions, many of them solo. She has exhibited in galleries throughout the country and her work hangs in private collections across the United States. “Painting for me is an expression of gratitude for the gifts nature
provides us. Stop for a moment and take in the magnificence of the changing sky, the sound of bubbling water in a brook, a flower up close, or the rose glow on the mountains as the sun goes down in the west,” Van Vynckt says. “There is a deep spirituality to everything we find, and it is as close to us as our heartbeat.” Gallery Internationale is hosting the opening for Vicki’s show on Sunday, August 4, from 4-8 p.m. at 2760 Greenville Hwy (US 25) Flat Rock, N.C. 28731, located in the Cherry Cottage at Rainbow Row. The show runs from Aug. 4-31. Gallery hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Call Francesca Armijo at 828-6924638 for more information. - article submitted by Vicki Van Vynckt

The Pea Ridge combination dinner and breakfast gathering, Aug. 8 The Pea Ridge gathering set for Thursday, Aug. 8 will consist of a covered dish dinner and an “Imaginary Breakfast” fund raiser. If someone in the community would like to participate at 6:30 p.m. at the community center, they should bring their favorite entrée, casserole or salad as well as dessert and beverage. Paperware and ice will be furnished. Note change of time to 6:30 p.m.
In an effort to raise funds for ongoing repairs, scholarship fund, etc., an “Imaginary Breakfast” will be held at this meeting. Remember to bring your purse or wallet which will replace your usual donations of breakfast food items, your time and the energy required to put on the typical “world famous breakfast” as in the past. Speaker of the evening will be local stained glass crafter
Anita Richardson telling about “Enjoying Life in Pea Ridge.” Richardson has lived in the community many years and is in love with the area. So bring your dinner to be shared and your wallet to help raise funds without the hard work associated with producing a breakfast meal. As a matter of public service, the Polk County mobile recycling
truck will be at the Pea Ridge Community Center also on Thursday, Aug. 8 from 6:15 – 7 p.m. The truck picks up recyclables on the second Thursday of each month from 6:15 – 7 p.m. at the center, which is located at 207 Big Level Road, 3-1/2 miles east of Mill Spring, just off Highway 108. For information, call Daryl Hardin at 828-894-8376. - article submitted by Ann Carswell

Children from the camp at the Polk County Rec Center came to eat lunch at the Polk Baptist Association’s free meal on Friday. Shown are sitting (left to right) Jada Foster, Hunter Geagley, Cannon Iamurri and Jessie Bradley; kneeling (left to right) Gi Owens-Matz, Mia Bradley, Hayden Blackwell and Kylie Lewis; standing (left to right) Casey McDowell, Austin Geagley, Xavier Cardwell and Emery Viehman. “We wanted to help make the children aware of what we were doing at the Polk Baptist Association, and that we’re here. It was them getting to know us, said Ann Carswell, one of the main organizers of the lunch. About half of the kids from the camp came this week, and the other half will come next week. The weekly meal is served by the Polk Baptist Association free of cost for the community. They serve on average of 35 to 45 people, and receive help from volunteers. On Friday, July 26 they served 52 people and were assisted by seven volunteers. The Polk Baptist Association is located at 208 Blanton Street in Columbus. (photo by Ann Louise Granger)
