Saluda firefighter to cycle 700 miles for fallen victims

Rich Rauschenbach of Saluda and almost 40 other members of the Carolina Brotherhood cycling team during a charity ride last year. The team will ride through our area Aug. 15 to support the families of fallen police officers. See full story on page 3. (photo submitted)

During this month in Polk County history, the following events occurred: the first train crossed the Saluda Grade on July 4, 1878; Colonial Governor Tryon extended the Carolina border to Tryon Peak, on July 16, 1767; the great WNC Flood occurred July 16, 1916; and Polk County 4-H Foundation was incorporated, July 20, 1964.

Polk seeks consultant for DSS repairs by Leah Justice

Polk County Commissioners expressed their concern this month over repairs to the department of social service (DSS) meeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification and generally being done correctly. Commissioners met July 8 and directed attorney Jana Berg to look into

finding a specialized LEED consultant to oversee the project. The DSS building was completed and moved into at the end of 2011. County officials have discovered several issues since and some work has yet to be completed. The largest issues are with the HVAC system and the septic system, as well as humidity issues.

Saluda firefighter to cycle 700 miles for fallen victims Rich Rauschenbach of Saluda and almost 40 other members of the Carolina Brotherhood plan to cycle their way from the Greenville watershed through our area Thursday, Aug. 15. Rauschenbach helped organize the local portion of the charity bicycle ride. This is the second year Lt. Richard Rauschenbach of the Asheville City Fire Department has joined up with the team comprised of 40 firefighters from North and South Carolina. “Being a firefighter and a cyclist are two of my favorite vocations,” Rauschenbach said. “Raising money doing the things I love is very rewarding.” The mission of the Carolina Brotherhood Bicycle Team (carolinabrotherhood.com) is to provide emotional and financial support for the families of those lost in the line of duty. The money raised goes directly to the victim’s families to help them move forward without having

to worry with financial strains after loosing a family member. This time, the ride is twice as long and goes through some of the hottest parts of South Carolina before finishing up in the cool mountain air of Boone, N.C. The terrain is diverse and challenging as it follows the long flat hot tar roads in the center of South Carolina, in the hottest part of the summer, and then makes a slow and high ascent into some of most challenging hills in this part of the United States. What some may consider torture, Rich considers fun, because he is raising money for a good cause. This year’s ride is dedicated to the six police officers from North and South Carolina that lost their life in the line of duty. Bobby Gene Demuth, Jr. Trooper, North Carolina Highway Patrol, N.C. Sandra E. “Sandy” Rogers - Master Corporal, Aiken Department of Public Safety, S.C. Randall “Shane” Thomas - Detective, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, N.C. Because firefighters spend such a great deal of time together, working, eating and sleeping on the same schedules, Rauschenbach said they inevitably form a special relationship, an unbreakable bond often referred to as the “brotherhood.” Firefighters and police face such adverse situations that can result in danger and injury and sometimes even death, it is important in the healing process of both the service people and their families to be able to contribute in some way.

This year’s ride will start in Rocky Mount on Aug. 10 and end seven days later in Boone, N.C. covering more than 700 miles. Overnight stops include Elizabethtown, Darlington, Columbia, Aiken, Honea Path, Hendersonville and Marion. The ride will average 100 miles a day and end with a 6,000foot elevation climb on the last day into Boone. On Thursday, Aug. 15 the group will travel through Saluda and into Hendersonville. Rauschenbach, his wife Joni and son Wylie have lived in Saluda for the past nine years. Rauschenbach is also a volunteer firefighter for Saluda. The surety bond company met with a few different contractors recently to complete the work on the septic system and, as of last week, was working to select a contractor. Interim Polk County Manager Marche Pittman said the septic system work will be extensive and will include pulling up concrete and fixing the walls along the route of the pipe inside the building. Polk maintenance has been going to the building on a bi-weekly basis to continuously flush the toilets in order for back ups to not occur. During the July 8 meeting, commissioner Keith Holbert said he wants to see the building complete and wants the county to make sure it gets its money’s worth. He mentioned a consulting firm he found online that specialized in LEED certification and suggested the county hire a company such as his example. “I want to make sure someone is in our corner making sure we get this done right,” Holbert said. Commissioner chair Michael Gage said when someone takes a shower at the DSS building it leaks into the hallway because there’s no liner. Other issues mentioned during the meeting were cracks in the walls and rooms that were unusable because of noise from the HVAC system. Pittman said those issues have since been corrected. Commissioner Tom Pack said

some of the tests have not been completed that were supposed to be by the contract as well. “We’ve got a mess out there that needs to be fixed,” said Pack. “We need someone on Polk County’s side. In May commissioners agreed to withhold $75,000 from the DSS building contractor, Able Construction and demanded that North American Insurance Company honor its obligations under the performance bond to complete the contract. The approximate 12,000-square-foot DSS building, located off Wolverine Trail in Mill Spring, was the county’s first LEED certified building. The county’s budget for the building was $2 million with the contract with Able Construction being $1,590,755. DSS was scheduled to occupy the building in November 2011 but weren’t able to move in until December 2011. The county fined the contractors because the certificate of occupancy was not granted on time. Some of the delay was caused by the heating and cooling controls not functioning correctly in the building and the soffit had not been installed on time. Other problems that caused delays were that work on the soffit, or eaves under the roof had to be stopped near the end of construction because there was no insulation, so contractors had to spray in insulation prior to receiving a certificate of occupancy.

Tryon woman wanted for stabbing man with pocketknife A warrant has been issued for Erin Roy, 32, of Tryon after a man was treated at St. Luke’s Hospital for a stab wound. Tryon Police Chief Jeff Arrowood said officers were called to the hospital Monday, July 29 at about 2 p.m. in reference to a stabbing. Arrowood said the victim, a male, told them he was in a ve-

hicle and the suspect was walking when they got into an argument. The victim said at some point during the argument Roy stabbed him with a pocketknife, according to Arrowood. The victim did not present life-threatening injuries, according to police reports. As of 5:30 p.m. Monday, Roy had not been arrested.

Thompson fourth in USA Cycling Cross-Country Nationals by Mark Schmerling

Fourth place at the recent USA Cycling Cross-Country Nationals in eastern Pennsylvania, got Polk County’s Ethan Thompson on the podium and kept him regional points leader in the 15-18 age group. The race also continued his focus on earning a bicycling scholarship to college. While Thompson had already defeated the event’s frontrunners in previous competition, starting and passing circumstances probably cost the young Green Creek/Mill Springs resident at least one spot in the event, but “it was a good, solid race,” he said. Overcoming a clogged start, which gave him seventh place early on, “I made a couple of passes,” said Thompson. Close to race’s end, he was in third place, when the rider ahead of him fell. To avoid a collision, Thompson had to slow down, and unclip (his shoes from his pedals). That allowed the next rider to pass him, putting Thompson in fourth place, where he finished. Some 20 riders competed in the race. The first five finishers were called to the podium, where they were awarded medals. Because the trail through the woods is often little more than a foot wide, such situations are demanding on skill and equipment, and present random advantages and disadvantages to riders. In this case, Thompson did the best he could, but could not overcome all the obstacles. In spite of his having de-

feated many of these riders on different occasions, Thompson was still somewhat nervous at the start. He said his initial strategy was like that of most of the riders – to not take an early lead. “Nobody goes first into the woods,” said Thompson. Trying

to maintain a lead can be wearing on a race of some 8 miles. Instead, he said, most riders try to maintain the leader’s pace, and try to pass their way to first. In spite of three riders finishing ahead of him, Thompson noted that only one minute separated first and fourth

places. Thompson finished just nine seconds behind the second and third-place winners, who crossed the finish line together. “I think it’s good,” Thompson summarized, although he expressed some disappointment (Continued on page 4)

at not finishing faster. “Not every race lines up the way you want it to.” During the recent event, Thompson also got to meet some professional racers, and their very expensive equipment. “It was crazy,” he reported. What’s next? This weekend, Thompson will stay in the 15-18 age (Junior) class in another cross-country race. He’s Ethan Thompson maintaining his weekly training routine of some 100 miles on his bike, along with weight tion. “We’re just trying to get on training. After this week, he’ll move the podium,” said Thompson, to the Men’s (age 19-29) class, whose parents, Cory and Erin Thompson, and after that, have both been to the Men’s highly sup19-29 Catego- “We’re just trying to get portive of his ry 2 class, with on the podium.” longer races. -- Ethan Thompson bicycle racing. Field of daydreams: helping others relieve stress Good Neighbor

(continued from page 2)

Kiesa Kay

When Lori Field daydreams, she imagines ways of making her business more comfortable and inviting. Then she closes her eyes and remembers being on an island beach with a cold drink in her hand, relaxing. “I call my shop Daydreams, because it sounds like an escape, drifting from everything around you and releasing,” Lori says. “American Heritage dictionary defines a daydream as ‘a dreamlike musing or fantasy while you’re awake.’ I want Daydreams to be a healing, spiritual place. When you pull off the road, I want you to be in a place to meditate, relax, refresh and heal.” Field has been a masseuse for 17 years, and she grew up with appreciation for how massages can be part of a healthy regimen for body, mind and spirit. She attributes her commitment to peaceful life and good health to her strong, lifelong spiritual faith. She grew up as a Seventh Day Adventist, and her faith supports eating a plant-based diet, exercising regularly and not smoking. Being physically healthy increases life span, which means a person has more time to worship and do good work, she said. “God is the guide for my business,” she said. “I say a silent prayer before each treatment, and ask Him to bring healing to each individual.” Between July 2011 and 2012, more than 34 million Americans had massages, often to improve sleep, help with depression, end muscle soreness or stop migraines. Although the American Massage Therapist Association states that half of the people who get mas-

sages cite a medical reason, Field says the pure comfort of massage can be healing in itself. “All my massages offer lots of pampering,” she says. “I grew up a girly girl. I always liked to paint my toenails and wear high heels. It’s always interested me to see how easy it is to make people feel better.” Helping other people feel better makes Field feel better, too. “I don’t ever have free time. Ken works till nine or ten at night, seven days a week, and I do, too, so it’s a good thing that I love my work,” she says. Her Ken is Ken Busch, owner of Ken’s Scoops Ice Cream and Graceland Sheds. “Kenny has been my role mod-

el, because he has such a good mind for business,” she says. “He and I went to grade school together. He was two years ahead of me, and his mother was my church secretary. Seven years ago, a friend brought us together again. We hadn’t seen each other for years, but we had memories of many of the same places.” Field enjoys daydreaming about the beach, but she wouldn’t want to live there again. “I spent 40 years in Florida, and I don’t want to live on that flat land,” she says. “I miss the beach but love these mountains. I like all the nature, outdoors, wildlife. It’s a slower pace here than in Florida, and it’s good to be out of that rat race.”
