Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry equips students to learn a job and the school list is long and expensive,” Newton said as she explained there are likely more families out there who still could use help. Parents on Saturday quickly equipped their kids with items directly from their school’s supply list in one stop. Volunteers packed plastic bags filled with three-ring binders, pencils, markers and erasers. As kids grabbed their supplies, peaking inside to see what the bags held, they made their way to the next stage to get backpacks. “Ooh, I want that purple one with the hearts on it,” said one little girl as she excitedly chose her favorite. Client services director Michelle Reedy works much of the year watching for sales and special deals on items like backpacks just so the kids that benefit from the supply drive get to have that special moment of picking their backpack out. Newton said numerous individuals, churches and businesses contributed funds and supplies to make the effort possible. Several other organizations made the day complete by offering information about dental services through Collins Dental Center, fire

Though the cost of pencils and paper seem minute to some, but the reality is many families in Polk County struggle to cover the costs of such items as their kids prepare to head back to school. Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry set out Saturday, Aug. 3 to prevent the lack of a pencil from causing another barrier in a child’s effort to learn. Outreach Director Carol Newton said once again they served more families this year than the last. Last year’s supply drive served about 187 children. At the beginning of the day Saturday, Newton expected to see almost double that number. “We think we’ll see at least 350 kids – we’ve already served about 55 through Steps to HOPE and DSS,” Newton said. When the doors prepared to open Saturday at Polk County High School’s cafeteria, there was already a line stretching down and around the sidewalk. By the end of the day Outreach provided school supplies to about 375 students. “It’s just a challenging world with low wages if you are fortunate enough to have

Organizers are currently seeking volunteers for the Green River Games trail crew to get the trails ready for mountain biking and trail running. Work for the trail crew includes building new bridges, digging water bars, cutting out fallen trees and trail cleanup. Volunteers will be rewarded with gear and store discounts from Green River Games trail partner REI. For more information about joining the trail crew visit www. greenrivergames.com. The races include mountain and road biking, kayaking, SUP (stand up paddle) and trail and road running. “With the gracious support of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission this event will showcase not only the river, but the mountains which surround it,” states the Green River Games website at www.greenrivergames. com. The races begin on Friday, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. with The Cove Climb 6k road running race. Runners will begin the race at the Fish Top parking lot and will run along the Green River and up the 17 switchbacks of Green River Cove Road, which will take them 1,000 feet above the river. The 6k race will finish in downtown Saluda, where runners can celebrate with a kick off party. A portion of the proceeds of the cove climb race will help fund school field trips to the Green River game lands for

Polk County fifth graders. “This partnership between the Green River Games, N.C. Wildlife and Green River Adventures will educate students on the value of these protected lands and the recreational benefits they offer,” states the Green River Games’ website. The field trip will consist of a day in the Green River Gorge that will include hiking and rafting. Events on Saturday, Sept. 7 will begin with a mountain bike race called the Sunshine Enduro, which is scheduled for 8 a.m. The Sunshine Enduro will feature a steep downhill race where athletes will be timed in three downhill stages. Saturday will also include a SUP race down 4.8 miles of class I and II sections of the river beginning at 1 p.m. The SUP race will begin at Wilderness Cove Campground and finish at Big Rock take-out. The top 10 racers will be invited to compete on Sunday, Sept. 8 in the Mountain SUP Class III+ exhibition event on the upper Green River, through Bayless’ Boof, which will be a ½ mile down river sprint. Sunday’s SUP exhibition race will begin at 10 a.m. Running races will be held on Sunday, beginning with the Big Hungry Half Marathon at 8 a.m. and the Big Hungry 10k at 9 a.m. The half marathon will take runners up steep mountainsides and along the Green River with (Continued on page 6)

Lion Chuck Trevathan awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship The Columbus Lions Club recently presented the Lions top award, the Melvin Jones Fellowship, to past president, secretary and treasurer Charles E. Trevathan in recognition of his more than 20 years of faithful service to the club and the community. Still swinging: senior tennis players live life in motion by Kirk Gollwitzer

Mary Ann Plante understands Newton’s First Law of Motion, which states that a body at rest will remain at rest; but a body in motion is the life she prefers to lead. At 80 years old, Plante, along with her tennis partner and longtime friend Ellen Goodman, 67, have devoted their lives to the fast motion sport. Plante is a current clay courtindoor champion and has been selected to travel to Austria in September to compete against 12 other nations. Goodman, who keeps a home on Lake Lanier, will remain stateside during the Austrian competition, but is ranked sixth in the U.S. in her singles division and proudly adds that last week she beat the second and fifth seated competitors in the entire country. The two live near Tryon half of the year and the other half in Winter Park, Fla. where Goodman works as an instructor and runs a tennis clinic for women. Both Plante and Goodman devote their lives to tennis and especially the Les Grande Dames International Senior Women’s Tennis Circuit, a competition for some of the country’s best women players. “My last partner was 97 years old when she retired from tennis and was one of the best in the world,” Plante said. Plante and Goodman together founded Les Grande Dames in 1976 when Plante was 45 years old. “I wanted to create a viable

circuit for women to encourage them to continue to play tennis as long as they possibly can and compete for prize money, which would offset their expenses,” Plante said. Today, Les Grande Dames sees as many as 175 women a year, ranging from age 30 to 95. The senior athletes compete for prize money in Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, Winter Park and Tampa, Fla. Plante says the competition provides an opportunity for past competitors to

remain in the game for the rest of their lives. “It’s an opportunity to compete and stay fit,” said Plante. Plante was born in Dover, Delaware and spent her childhood in an orphanage. She was married for 25 years and had six children. She served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where she became a ping-pong champion. At 30 years old, Plante took up tennis and began eliminating her competition within the

a ping-pong player. Plante cares little about Goodman’s jabs saying, “I play to win!” Plante says her national ranking should not be confused with amateur status. She also says that she has played with almost every well-known player in the sport including Billy Jean King. According to Plante, King herself gave it her all at the Les Grande Dames tournaments, winning, losing and then quitting. “It happens frequently to the greatest of the greats, who come to win but find themselves losing,” said Plante. “Many of the past champions can’t compete with the other women in their age brackets who have kept themselves fit.”

Plante said as she gets older she gets sharper. “My geometry of the court improves with experience,” Plante said. In Florida, Plante plays four times a week on four separate teams, and during her off time she plays golf, spends time on her boat and loves bridge. Both Plante and Goodman said bridge is the more cerebral game while tennis is more of an adrenalin rush. Plante said tennis would always be her first love and plans to play the sport until the day she dies.

Pass the farm, please In Good Taste by Carol Lynn Jackson

A farm museum offers a oneof-a-kind learning experience as you travel back in time through agriculture. Families passed down the farm for generations, sending along with it heritage, history and critical lifeskills. Two top farm museums in the region are The Mountain Farm Museum in Oconaluftee, near Cherokee, N.C. and the Bart Garrison Agricultural Museum near Pendleton, S.C. Oconaluftee offers both a visitor center and the Mountain Farm Museum - a collection of historic log buildings gathered from throughout the Smoky Mountains and preserved on a single site. Buildings include a house, barn,

applehouse, springhouse and smokehouse. The Mountain Farm Museum is a unique collection of farm buildings assembled from locations throughout the park. Visitors can explore a log farmhouse, barn, apple house, springhouse and a working blacksmith shop to get a sense of how families may have lived 100 years ago. Most of the structures were built in the late 19th century and were moved here in the 1950s. The Davis House offers a rare chance to view a log house built from chestnut wood before the chestnut blight decimated the American chestnut in our forests during the 1930s and early 1940s. The museum is adjacent to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. The site also demonstrates historic gardening and agricultural practices, including livestock. An inexpensive, self-guiding tour booklet is available.

Making beautiful music together Good Neighbor

(continued from page 2)

Kiesa Kay

When Jon Cavin first laid eyes on his future wife, she had a roll of shiny new quarters in her hand to pay for her dinner, a celebration for the Gardening Crew at CooperRiis Healing Farm. Cavin had been raised right by his father, a minister, and his mother, a music teacher. He paid for Briana McCallum’s dinner. The next time he saw McCallum, she was walking a pit bull. She’d rescued the little dog from the center of the road at midnight on a snowy Christmas Eve. They began talking and soon realized that gardening, compassionate hearts and rescuing strays were only a small part of all they shared. “We both have played music our whole lives,” Cavin said. Together they have more than a dozen musical instruments. They both played music with the residents at CooperRiis and loved it. “It’s a nonverbal form of bonding, and expressing feelings verbally can be difficult,” McCallum said. “It’s a way of bonding deeply without personal sharing.” Jon, a longtime local of Polk County, who grew up in Green Creek, soon shared his favorite sledding spot with Briana. As they slid down snowy hills together, their laughter rang throughout the clear evening air, and both of them realized that they felt more than simple friendship for each other. “We went to see a marriage counselor the first month we dated, to clarify our goals. We decided that talking through things before they come up makes it easier when you need those communication skills,” Cavin said. McCallum added, “We have learned from lived experience, and we knew how serious we were going to be. We wanted to see where our morals and ideals conformed and where we disagreed, so we could make sure we felt willing to work through that.”

Jon Cavin and Briana McCallum

They loved having fun together. Both of them have become integral to the Art Farm activities founded by Mike and Finn Odle, and they went to the Lake Eden Arts Festival as playful puppeteers. “We’d strap on drums with puppets and backpacks; Jon had his guitar, and there was a 20-foot puppet. We danced, creating a magical fairyland for a moment, and then we moved on,” McCallum said. Before long, wedding bells were ringing. Rain pelted their outdoor wedding, but umbrellas and good spirits made it work. Their friendship and sense of shared fun has sustained them. One friend, a co-worker at CooperRiis, even helped their plans by sharing her own haven on Molokai in Hawaii, as their honeymoon retreat. Cavin had shared his sledding spots, and McCallum shared her love of scuba diving. They had so much fun together on the island they have decided to name their farm “Little Molokai.” “I had a lot of love here grow-

ing up here in a tight community,” Cavin said. “Locals move away sometimes, and I’d like to help make it a place that locals want to come back to, the way I did. Several generations of family before me have helped me to grow to be the person I am, and I want to pass it on, homesteading, playing music for fun, being there for others.” Cavin and McCallum have worked together at CooperRiis ever since they met, and their shared pleasures continue to grow every day. Cavin, who shares McCallum’s love of gardening and cooking, works in many supportive capacities, a jack of all trades, and McCallum has become a sous chef. “We both like planting the seeds of health and watching them grow,” McCallum said. “We may not realize how much what you say or do will matter to people later. We share the goal in life of finding ultimate balance with all the things we love, and turning other people onto them. Working and playing together makes a more meaningful life.”
