Columbus Fire Chief Bobby Arledge said Columbus received a call at 6:06 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9 from a man who said there was smoke coming from the eaves of the home on Hooper Creek Road. Firefighters responded within 5 to 6 minutes, and Arledge said once firefighters arrived flames were coming out of the sides and roof of the home. The man and woman who reside at the home were safely outside when firefighters arrived, Arledge said. “We sent two crews in the front door to put [the fire] out, but the roof started falling in and we pulled out and started a defensive attack,” Arledge said. Arledge said because of the severity of the storm and evidence from the fire itself, firefighters have determined the fire was caused by a lightning strike. He said the fire started in the attic and burned the entire attic before coming through to the rest of the house, which is an indicator lightning caused the fire. Firefighters got a lot of items out of the house both Thursday night and Friday morning, Arledge said, but the 3,800-square-foot structure was destroyed.

The fire at this Red Fox home was started by lightning, fire department officials said. (photo by Leah Justice)

The Columbus Fire Department was assisted by fire departments from Green Creek, Mill Spring, Landrum, Tryon and Saluda. Polk County Emergency Services also

attended, as well as the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Polk County American Red Cross. The Sunny View Fire Department responded to the Joy Lane

fire and was assisted by Mill Spring and departments out of Rutherford County. No other information was available as of press time on the Sunny View fire.

driving.” Sending a resolution to the state was brought up by commissioner Ted Owens initially in July when a DOT engineer attended a county meeting to discuss amending this year’s secondary road project. Owens asked DOT District Engineer Steve Cannon how the county could get Hwy. 9 resurfaced sooner. Cannon said a resolution would help and said he would request the project be moved up. Cannon said last month the

resurfacing of Hwy. 9 in the Polk Central School area is a minimum of three to four years out. The county received an email on Aug. 1 from DOT District Asphalt Engineer Keith Rogers that the request to repave Hwy. 9 has been noted. “The best date that I can give will be in 2015 or 2016,” Rogers’ email said. “The cost of resurfacing has increased greatly over the past few years; and our road system is challenged with the current funding level for the division. But I assure you that as soon as we are able to resurface N.C. 9 it will go out to contract.”

Viral videos bring singer/songwriter, guitar builder together Lichty announces three guitarbuilding workshops Though they live just a stone’s throw apart, S.C. singer/songwriter Noah Guthrie and N.C. luthier Jay Lichty had never met until Guthrie’s YouTube videos went viral. Guthrie is a South Carolina singer/songwriter who is rapidly making a name for himself. His music has been featured on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show,” he has been on the set and in front of millions of viewers as a guest of NBC’s “Today Show” and his video has been featured on Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show.” While he is best known for his creative renditions of cover tunes (his version of LMAFO’s song “Sexy and I Know It” has had more than 11 million views), Guthrie’s original music is a mixture of Americana pop with a touch of blues and it’s often described as smoky, rich and romantic. Jay Lichty, who happens to live just minutes up the road from Guthrie, is a luthier who builds custom handmade acoustic guitars and ukuleles in his Tryon shop. Lichty built his first guitar under the guidance of world-renowned luthier and musician Wayne Henderson. Since that time Lichty has handcrafted more than 90 instruments, in addition to teaching guitar-building courses.

Lichty said he saw immediately the extent of Guthrie’s talents after watching one of his videos and he joined millions who were already fans of the S.C. musician. At current count the videos on Guthrie’s YouTube Channel, Only1Noah, have been viewed more than 21,000,000 times. Within a few days of their initial contact, Guthrie visited to test-drive Lichty’s handcrafted guitars, and he is now the owner of a one-of-a-kind Lichty guitar. Guthrie joins the ranks of professional musicians who play Lichty’s guitars from Japan to Los Angeles. These musicians include internationally acclaimed Australian guitarist Geoff Achison; the winner of Japan’s National Fingerstyle Playing Competition in 2012, Shohei Toyoda; brothers Mike and Tom Gossin of top country band Gloriana and others.

House of Flags to host historic flags of Eisenhower Oval Office For the first time in history all six original flags from the White House during President Eisenhower’s administration will be together in a single exhibit from Oct. 10-13 at the House of Flags Museum in Columbus. Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th president of the United States (1953-1961), was the only president in the nation’s history to serve under three different presidents’ flags. The exhibit includes 48-star, 49-star, and 50-star president’s flags and the corresponding U.S. colors. The 50-star U.S. flag on display is the actual flag unveiled in the White House Cabinet Room when Hawaii became the 50th state. The flags are on loan from a private collection and from the Eisenhower Museum and Library in Abilene, Kan. Historic 1940s and 1950s photographs of the hand embroidery flag making process from the U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum at Fort Lee, Va. will also be on display along with other press photos of Alaska and Hawaii statehood events. One of a kind – The 49-star President’s Oval Office flag, hand-made at the U.S. Army Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot in 1958, will be on public display for the first time since leaving the White House in 1960. This priceless hand embroidered silk president’s flag featuring 49 stars may be the only one of its kind ever made. The 49-star flag was official for only one year – July 4, 1959 to July 4, 1960. Rare two-sided needle-painting handembroidery techniques are used to create these blue silk flags featuring a life-like eagle grasping olive branches and arrows with rays and clouds above; a red, white and blue shield; plus a scrolled motto E Pluribus Unum surrounded by a circle of stars corresponding to the number of states. The perfectly mirrored designs are identical on both sides of the flag – the backside being seen only after the flag is complete. All three president’s flags are unique hand-embroidered works of art with hand-tied gold and silver precious metal fringe. Admission is free and donations are always appreciated. The museum is fully handicap accessible. This exhibit was made possible by a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation and the support of the residents of Tryon Estates. The House of Flags Museum is a nonprofit 501(c)3 educational organization

English or house sparrows in Carolinas In an earlier column we talked about our native sparrows here in Western North Carolina. Normally when you mention the word “sparrow,” most people think of the now familiar house or English sparrow. This much maligned, yet handsome bird was introduced into the U.S. between 1850 and 1870. By 1910, the house sparrow population had exploded and they had reached across the country as far as California. Nowadays they can be found almost anywhere in Canada, the United States and Mexico. House sparrows are residents throughout the year here in the Carolinas, and Ttheir uesday, december 13, 2011 distribution is strongly associated with huby Simon man habitation. Thompson They are found in agricultural, suburban and urban areas, but tend to avoid woodlands, deep forests, grasslands and deserts. House sparrows are members of the Old World sparrows and snowfinches, a group of birds closely allied to the weaver finches of Asia and Africa. The only other Old World sparrow found in the United States is the Eurasian Tree Sparrow, which was introduced into St. Louis in 1870. This close relative of the house sparrow has not expanded

its range like its cousin, but is now a permanent resident in eastern Missouri and western Illinois. It is often found with the house sparrow, as well as mixing with the native species. Actually this area of the central U.S. is the only place in the world that you can see both the American tree and Eurasian tree sparrows in the same flock. Because of its colonization of the American continent, the house sparrow has had a detrimental effect on several of the native species, the most popularly Male house sparrow (photo by known being the eastern bluebird.
