Gasperson said he thinks it’s important commissioners listen to volunteer boards as much as possible. He asked if it would hurt to get some input from the planning board. “They may come up with some angles we haven’t thought about,” Gasperson said. Owens said all the board is trying to do is figure out how to be more representative of the townships and trying to get a mix. Gage said, “The people in this county need representation that’s what this is about.” The current planning board consists of regular members Bill Ennis (White Oak), Wayne Horne (Green Creek), David Smith (Columbus) and Susan Welsh (Saluda), whose terms will expire Oct. 31, 2013; Lee Bradley (Columbus), whose term expires in 2014; Lisa Krolak (Columbus) and Christel Walter (White Oak), whose terms expire in 2015; and alternate Michael Axelrod (Columbus), whose term expires in 2014. Members can serve two consecutive three-year terms with at least one year taken off before reapplying. The proposed draft calls for the same stipulations on taking a year off after two consecutive terms, except the board is now looking into two-year terms instead of three-year terms.

Polk County has experienced heavy rainfall and flooding in many areas. It is imperative that farmers who have experienced damages to crops, pasture, livestock, farmland, farm buildings, farm equipment, or conservation structures, contact the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Hendersonville to report the extent of those damages. It is also very important that damages are documented by

(continued from page 4)

population townships over the more heavily populated townships. “Sparsely populated townships would dominate the planning board, leaving the population centers of Tryon Township and Columbus Township with underrepresentation,” McDermott said. She also said the current planning board was not allowed to have a voice in this decision. “The current planning board was not allowed to have a voice, or even to comment on this proposal,” said McDermott. “It was never even shown to them and they weren’t notified that it would be on the agenda tonight. Why such secrecy? What a slap in the face.” Pack said commissioners are discussing the changes in public and there has to be a public hearing before anything is adopted. “So there’s nothing being done behind the scenes,” Pack said. “Unfortunately, (McDermott) is just being political.” Owens said the planning board is an advisory board that gives commissioners advice. “According to you (McDermott), the volunteer boards need to tell us how this should be set up. I agree with Pack. It’s all politics,” Owens said.

Richardson speaks at Pea Ridge community gathering Aug. 8 After a potluck dinner, wheelchairbound world traveler, Anita Richardson gave an informal talk. Richardson, who moved to Pea Ridge more than 30 years ago, stressed the meaning of community. She told about her travels; explained why she, her husband and two children settled in Pea Ridge; the wonderful friends she has made over the years and why everyone should be aware of the services available in Polk County. Richardson could not have remained in her own home without the help of Polk County Transportation and Polk LIFECare (located at the Meeting House in Columbus), where she goes twice a week. Richardson also spoke regarding her years of stain glass design and the beautiful lighted wall-panel that she created for the Rutherford Hospital. Everyone is invited to the next Pea Ridge gathering, an ice cream social with entertainment by Rosie Taylor and her Pea Ridge Blue Grass Band. The date is Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. - article submitted by Donna Southworth

Taber enjoys leading Landrum Boys and Girls Club Good Neighbor Keisa Kay

At 24, Trevin Taber has found work he loves. Taber, unit director for the Boys and Girls Club at O.P. Earle Elementary School, enjoys helping area children stay active and safe after school and through the summer. His program serves 115 to 125 children every day. “We’ve grown every year,” Taber said. “Our community support is the best it ever has been, and I’d like to build on that, strengthening partnerships and doing more programs. Mr. (Brian) Murray, principal at O.P. Earle, has been amazing. He provides materials and classroom space, and he really supports us.” The club schedule stays with the school calendar, from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday in the school year, and 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. during the summer. “We have snack, then a Power Hour for doing homework, and then we do activities in our basic areas, which are arts, sports, fitness and recreation; healthy lifestyle; character and leadership; and education.” Registration for this school year will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 13. Boys and Girls Club at O.P. Earle Elementary School serves students from first grade to fifth grade. “When the bell rings at the end of school days, a lot of kids start walking home. I like to know that they’re safe, and I like them to know that whatever happens, they can come to me and my staff for help and support in anything,”

Taber said. “Growing up, I was fortunate to be able to do a lot of fun things, like go bowling or skating. Every month, we do a field trip for each grade, so the kids in the club can experience a lot of fun things. The kids really enjoy it.” Last year, students from the Boys and Girls Club rode on a float in a Landrum parade, and they’ve taken historical field trips to the Walnut Grove Plantation. They participate in wildlife programs at Three Sisters Gardens and Linville Caverns, and they’ve taken digital cameras to Pearson Falls to learn elements of photography. They create bonds with each other as they learn new ways to have healthy fun in their lives. “The coolest thing might be taking the fifth graders, our oldest kids, to Camp Greenville for a weekend. They do a ropes course and team building, and it’s like a weekend summer camp, with good bonding for them,” Taber said. “It’s like a graduation from the club, in a way, and a celebration of them moving into middle school.” Families pay a one-time registration fee of $5 for program participation, and then parents volunteer one hour a week rather than pay money for the Club. The volunteer hour can take many forms, including going to a parentteacher organization meeting, participating in a school function, donating canned goods to service projects, or paying $10 if a parent’s schedule doesn’t allow for any volunteer time. “Every family situation is different, and as long as a family supports the program, we do what we can to make sure we support the family’s involvement,” Taber said.

(continued from page 2)

Trevin Taber

Taber, who has an undergraduate degree and a master’s degree in business, began working for Boys and Girls Club his sophomore year in college. He grew up in Chesnee but kept strong ties to his father’s family in Landrum, and his father has been his mentor, he said. “I like spending time with my family, and I love backyard baseball. I like to stay active and work out,” Taber said. “I like to watch my little brother in his league sports. I get to see kids from Boys and Girls Club playing in the league games, and get to know their families.” High school students from Americorps often work in the Boys and Girls Club programs, helping elementary students with their homework and participating in the activities. “I enjoy working with kids in Americorps. Many of the high school kids in Americorps plan to go into elementary education, and they can find out whether they like it and how it might be,” Taber said. “It’s been awesome here. The parent support is great. The school support is great. We have a great staff in place.”
