Congressman Patrick McHenry tours FENCE Foothills Equestrian Nature Center (FENCE) was buzzing Wednesday, Aug. 21 when Congressman Patrick McHenry arrived to tour the facility and learn about FENCE programs. Staff and board members shared their knowledge of wellknown outreach projects such as Project FENCE and TROT (Therapeutic Riding of Tryon) and the more intimate touchfeel room and live animal exhibit at the FENCE Center. McHenry also toured the recent storm damage sustained at FENCE. Nature Director Tracie Hanson proudly showed the newly renovated classroom that can serve 40 or more children with scientific investigation tools, thought provoking displays and a bright and inviting atmosphere. Nature assistant and Americorps member, Kristy Burja, continued the tour by sharing her passion for and knowledge of the animals residing at FENCE. “My time working here (at FENCE) completely changed the trajectory of my future. I plan to continue my education and work with children in environmental education because of my time here,” Burja said. TROT committee chair and FENCE vice-president Robbie Hambright led an informative tour of the TROT facilities. The program serves students of all ages. “I am impressed that this worthy program is run almost completely by volunteers. I commend the community for this effort,” McHenry said. After a quick stop at the historic Kimberly Log Cabin, everyone piled into vehicles to tour the storm damage on the equestrian side of the FENCE property. FENCE president of the board, John Boyle, explained the situation, “We are actively fundraising to cover the cost of these extensive repairs. We

have several bids in hand and hope to hire a company in the next week or so.” McHenry asked about federal funds that might be available and offered to look into ways he might help out. Congressman McHenry has represented North Carolina’s 10th Congressional District since 2004. This district includes Polk, Rutherford, Cleveland and Gaston Counties. McHenry currently serves on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and the House Financial Services Committee, where he is the chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. Congressman McHenry also serves as a deputy whip for House Republicans Conference. Congressman McHenry resides with his wife, Giulia, in Denver, N.C. North Carolina is requiring Polk County to do a special inspection of its Turner Shoals dam at Lake Adger that could cost up to $50,000. Commissioners met Aug. 19 and heard from engineer Dave Odom who presented the board with two proposals for the inspection, one for the approximate $32,000 and another for about $50,000. The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) sent the county a letter in June reviewing its annual visual inspection of the dam, which was done on April 24 this year. DENR’s letter, sent by Laura C. Herbert, PE, regional engineer, reviewed issues with the Turner Shoals Dam and is requiring a special inspection in addition to the required inspection every five years. The letter stressed the importance of maintaining the dam, the dangers of dam failure and said that DENR continues to list the Turner Shoals Dam in the “high hazard” category. “In the event of a dam failure, human life and significant property would be endangered because of the downstream location of NC Highway 9, other roads and possibly residences,” Herbert said in the letter. “During this inspection we investigated the potential for property damage and loss of life in the event your dam fails. This investigation determined that failure of your dam could result in serious property damage and possible loss of life. Therefore, we continue to list your dam in the “High Hazard” category.” The county continues to budget money annually for the known repairs needed to the dam after commissioners were told several years ago that future repairs are necessary. Odom said over time the county knows it will also have to complete repairs to meet new earthquake

and flood stability requirements. Issues noted by DENR included deterioration at various locations, seepage through many of the areas of deterioration and seepage along the toe of the bulkhead area and of the arches. “Continued deterioration of the concrete undermines the structural integrity of the dam. Seepage contributes to the deterioration by leaching constituents of the concrete and promoting freeze/ thaw damage,” said DENR’s letter. Commissioners expressed concern that the two proposals for the inspection were so different in price. The lowest proposal of $32,000 came from AECOM, which has completed the county’s last two reports on the dam. Black & Veatch provided the approximate $50,000 proposal and has also completed a report on the county’s dam in the past. Odom said he wasn’t sure why there was such a difference, but recommended AECOM do the inspection. He said AECOM could be lower because they have on file the most recent information on the dam. Odom also said he has told DENR the county has asked for proposals and doesn’t think the inspection is required immediately. He said the county likely has six months to complete the inspection. Commissioners decided to table hiring a firm until its Sept. 9 meeting to determine why the proposals were so different.

was 10,883, including 214 tractor trailers, 479 buses and trucks, 3,169 vans and trucks and 6,875 passenger vehicles, according to the report. At least half of the vehicles were traveling in the 25-30 mph zone, with the average speed of 29 mph. The speed limit is 25 mph. Of the vehicles, 37.49 percent were exceeding the speed limit with 0.07 percent of those traveling in excess of 55 mph. A similar 2007 study was conducted in the same area of CVS from Oct. 31, 2007 at 1 p.m. through Nov. 1, 2007 at 1 p.m. At that time there were 14,119 vehicles traveling, with at least half traveling in the 20-34 mph range, according to the study. During the 2007 study, there were 63 tractor trailers, 60 buses and trucks, 239 small trucks and 13,695 passenger vehicles. The average speed of all vehicles in 2007 was 30 mph, with 82.9 percent exceeding the posted speed limit of 25 mph and 0.47 percent traveling in excess of 55 mph. The 2007 traffic count could have been high for the day considering it was done on Oct. 31, where a large amount of vehicles

The goal of the Columbus Police Department is to manage the speed of vehicles in the 25-35 mph range. As is evidenced by the most recent traffic study, the speeds of vehicles along Mills Street have been significantly reduced into that range. There has been, and continues to be a need for reasonable speed enforcement on the city streets of Columbus.” The DOT also did a traffic study on Walker Street (downtown) from July 23, 2013 at 3 p.m. through July 24 at 3 p.m. with the total vehicle count at 145, including 100 passenger vehicles, 23 vans and pickup trucks, six buses and trucks and four tractor trailers. At least half of the vehicles were traveling in the 20-25 mph range, or less, according to the report, with the average speed 24 mph. The speed limit on Walker Street is 20 mph with 0.75 percent traveling in excess of 55 mph.

Tryon Fine Arts Center announces 2013-2014 Main Stage season

Tryon Fine Arts Center announces the 2013-2014 Main Stage Season opening Oct. 5 with New York City’s award winning improvised musical comedy, Broadway’s Next H!t Musical. The Main Stage Series is part of the expanding programming offered by Tryon Fine Arts Center. TFAC’s Executive Director Beth Child states, “With the Main Stage Series, we try to bring the best artists in the world to our intimate theater, probably only a 10 minute drive away for most patrons. What could be better?” Saturday, Oct. 5: The season will open with the uproariously hysterical, entirely improvised musical comedy Broadway’s Next H!t Musical. Presented in a faux award show setting for “Best Musical,” four of the improv actors perform songs inspired by title suggestions from the audience, as well as explaining the plot of the musical it comes from, all made up on the spot and with piano accompaniment. The winning musical is then performed in its entirety after intermission. Saturday, Nov. 2: Cashore Marionettes, the beautiful creations of Joseph Cashore, return to the Tryon Fine Arts Center. The New York Times says, “[They] are unmatched in artistry, grace and refinement of movement. Master puppetry, beautiful music, illusion and artistic insight make this performance a truly unforgettable theatrical experience...” Cashore has performed across North America, Europe and Asia with beautiful scenes that portray everyday life set to the stunning music of the likes of Beethoven, Vivaldi, Strauss and Copland. His numerous awards include a Pew Charitable Trusts’ Fellowship for Performance Art, a Henson Foundation Grant and a UNIMA Citation of Excellence, which are “awarded to shows that touch their audiences deeply; that totally engage, enchant and enthrall.” Sunday, March 9: The new young Irish sensation Caladh

Nua is a tightly knit, vibrant and staggeringly talented band that captures the essential qualities of traditional Irish music and balances them finely with an innovative contemporary flair. Through a series of international tours and festivals across the globe, which saw the band take the stage in cities such as Paris, Vienna, Copenhagen, Berlin, Mumbai and Vancouver, Caladh Nua has cast a uniquely captivating net of Irish music and song over an ever widening worldwide audience. Friday, March 28: The blues and jazz powerhouse Catherine Russell, with her stunning, reminiscently vintage vocals, is the fourth show. Singing jazz with musicians including bassist Earl May, pianist Larry Ham, drummer Eddie Locke, or Jimmy Wormworth, Russell emerged as a retro oldschool vocalist for the ages. She has appeared at numerous festivals and on nationally-syndicated radio and television shows. Friday, May 9: The final show for the 2013-2014 series is the Grammy Award winning Sutton, Holt, and Coleman Trio. Individually, they are immense talents, and together they are sure to blow you away as they explore the richness of North Carolina traditional music. They take their inspiration from Doc Watson, with whom they’ve all had the pleasure to work, and wish to honor his musical genius with this show. Child says, “We are excited to be part of the vibrant arts community here. The center’s 45th year of operation promises to be a sensational one.” Seating for these events is reserved and season tickets are currently on sale. For more information and to purchase tickets, call 828-859-8322 or come by the box office Tuesday – Friday from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. 1 p.m. Information and tickets may also be found online by visiting www.tryonarts.org . – article submitted by Marianne Carruth

Anyone for a game of Pickleball?

Players are batting around a new sport at the Polk County Recreation Department. Last week, in Stearn’s Gym, Anne Howe introduced several area residents to Pickleball. This sport, similar to tennis, is played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles, according to the USA Pickleball Association. Shown at left is Howe leading instruction. Middle, Dawn Blanton takes her turn at the game and Debbie Pegg, right, said the game was easier to learn than she thought it would be. (photos by Virginia Walker)

Results from Tryon Women’s Golf Association Aug. 27 event The Tryon Women’s Golf Association weekly event for Aug. 27 was the end-of-the-month nine-hole Captain’s Choice, and the winning teams were as follows: In first place with a score of 35 were Becky Walker, Nancy Hiley and Betty Murray.

Across the country, high school students are helping patients in need by donating blood and platelets, volunteering at blood drives and donation centers, and recruiting new donors as part of the American Red Cross High School Leadership Program. Through the program, students are not only touching lives, but they’re becoming leaders and earning educational rewards along the way. With each achievement comes a Red Cross Red Cord to wear at graduation, the chance to win a $5,000 scholarship or a college recommendation letter from a local Red Cross executive, as well as optional online recognition. As much as 20 percent of Red Cross blood donations come from students. Veterans yearned to be dry, warm and safe Private First Class Don Clair Freeman, father of Eric Freeman of Tryon and his sisters, Claire and Tracey, was in the infantry of the US Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He served in the 4th Armored Division under General George S. Patton. Don fought as a heavy machine gunner in the Rhineland Campaign, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Purple Heart for an injury received while fighting in the Ardennes Forest of Germany. He was 19 years old when he enlisted. After the war, Don graduated from Harvard College, married, found a job, raised a family and became a gentleman farmer in Chagrin Falls and Hartsgrove, Ohio. Don retired 30 years later as tax director of an iron ore and steamship company, Pickands Mather Co. in Cleveland, Ohio. Don and his wife, Betsy; son, Eric, and daughter, Tracey, moved to Tryon in 1978. Tracey is a 1979 graduate of Tryon High School. Eric works at Ingles in Landrum and is a volunteer fireman for Tryon. In 2002, Don wrote this piece about his experiences in World War II: Cold, Wet and Dangerous My most vivid memory is pushing up to the front in the rain, in a soaking wet overcoat on December 19, 1944, on my 19th birthday. I was cold and wet all the time. My feet were never dry. We carried “shoe packs,” which were rubber shoes like today’s LLBEAN rubber shoes. I carried dry socks inside my shirt. Sometimes I carried wet socks inside my shirt and my body heat would dry them for me. I still can remember how miserable I felt, and I was not very hungry for our K-rations. We slept on the ground. I was an infantryman, a private first class, a foot soldier. One night when we were out on patrol, we returned to learn there had been a drawing for a three-day pass to Luxembourg City. I had won! A truck picked me up and took me to town. We were housed

in a building that once had been a school. Any words that were written on the walls of the building were in German. The school obviously had catered to German officers. We were fed hot food in the cafeteria and we had a warm bed for three days. The Red Cross girls had no time for us “dog faces.” They spent all their time laughing with our officers. We highly resented the way they ignored us. I still think of that today when the Red Cross asks for donations. I find I would rather give to the Salvation Army because of the treatment we received during the war from the Red Cross. When I left for overseas my maternal grandmother gave me a Bible with a copper cover on it. It was to protect me during battle. I did not think it would stop a bullet, but who knows? Three things stand out in my mind about Europe, and France in particular. They are (1) cold (2) wet and (3) danger. I was damn glad to have a finger shot off of my right hand by a German sniper. I was taken to a hospital at Bad Krusnach. Germany, near Frankfort. Later, I was sent to an army hospital in LeBourge, France, near Paris. I was shipped to England to a specialized arm and hand hospital in Rexum, Wales. Finally, I was sent back to the United States on a hospital ship, which was a fairly pleasant trip. I definitely had one of the more minor injuries compared to other soldiers who were in those hospitals with me. I would visit from hospital room to hospital room, because I was an ambulatory patient. My injury is considered a 10percent disability, and I was grateful to have it be of a lesser degree than it might have been. Now I am a Florida resident, and I am eligible to receive a real estate evaluation exemption of $500 in addition to my monthly disability check of $42 from the Veterans Administration. I am still remembered by the U.S. Army. And, best of all, I am finally (1) dry (2) warm and (3) safe! Don Clair Freeman, 2002

Private First Class Don Clair Freeman

After a long illness in Florida and Tryon, Don became the “poster boy” for the inception of the Betsy and Don Freeman Polk County Adult Day Care Center in Columbus. Don died in 2009 and was interred with a military funeral in the hallowed ground of Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., under a maple tree, near his army buddies. Don also has a memorial brick on the Path of Remembrance at the Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills, Landrum. It is inscribed with one of Don’s favorite sayings in time of sadness, “Let’s have a little smile for the troops.” – This Honor Your Veteran tribute was submitted by Mary Freeman. Thus, the association cannot offer a donor a federal tax deduction for any contribution nor can it obtain help from foundations. The 82d Airborne Division Band wants to participate and is going through Army channels to seek approval. Should the band be given the go ahead, the association will have to pay its travel and lodging expenses. As an overnight trip for more than 60 soldiers, expenses will total about $6,500. Other needs for funding include: help in promoting the parade; help in paying for the transportation of disabled vets to and from the events; and, providing a small stipend to ROTC units and high school bands for their participation. The costs for these efforts will run about $5,000. Several local businesses, such as Tryon Estates and The Pine Crest Inn, have already offered

The Patriots Salute to Veterans Association is a local organization, which has the sole purpose of honoring veterans on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. To do this, the association has planned a parade and memorial service to be held In Columbus. Major General James E. Livingston, USMC, Ret., a Medal of Honor recipient, will be the grand marshal. To finance these events, the association plans to seek funds from various local businesses, foundations and the general public. To provide an incentive for individual donors and to be eligible for grants from local foundations, the association made application to the Internal Revenue Service in mid-April 2013 for its designation as a non-profit organization. Having that designation would allow the donor to qualify for a tax deduction of equal amount. The application has lingered at the IRS since mid-April 2013. The association has requested the
