an estimated 60 percent loss this year out of the county’s estimated 450 acres of apples. The county’s largest crop, hay, suffered an estimated 30 percent loss this year out of its 10,000 acres of production. Polk County Cooperative Extension Director John Vining said the hay crop suffered, “primarily due to the inability to cut and cure the hay with the rainy weather.” Tomato losses varied greatly across the county with the extension center estimating a total of 45 percent loss out of 190 acres total. The county’s 400 acres of soybeans also suffered a 10 percent loss because rains this year. Vining said the county does not have an estimated loss in revenue for county farmers this

year because the losses are subject to change after the entire growing season is over. The area so far has received 12.05 inches of rain over normal ranges. The normal range for a year, calculated between 1981 and 2010 is 61.77 inches. As of Sept. 8, the Tryon National Weather Service observation station calculated 73.82 inches of rain this year. The area saw the most rain in July with 20.05 inches recorded and another 9.25 inches in June and 11.30 inches in May. The normal for July is 5.27 inches, the June normal is 5.38 inches and the May normal is 4.57 inches. (see chart above). August received 6.70 inches of rain and so far in September the area has recorded 0.33 inches of rain. January and April also saw above average rainfall with 9.17 and 7.69 inches respectively.

Polk Wolverines fall short against R-S Central by Mark Schmerling

Polk County scored 33 points, and reeled off several explosive gains, but the Wolverines couldn’t stop the rushing attack of R-S Central, in a frustrating 42-33 loss Friday, Sept. 6. It might have been R-S turning loose too many players named Whitesides (Rashaun and Desmond), who made big plays along with Matt Atchley. But it also didn’t help that several Polk starters sat out injured. Three Wolverine turnovers in the first half, also helped turn a potential lead into a 21-7 deficit at halftime. PCHS Coach Bruce Ollis said he fully believes his team will eventually show the benefits of facing tough opponents early on in the season. “We showed some big play capability tonight,” said Wolverines’ head coach Bruce Ollis. One of those big plays came on a long first-quarter pass from Reece Schlabach to Anthony Carson, the latter fighting all the way to the Hilltoppers’ 5-yard line, setting up a touchdown carry by Jordan Smith. That score, plus Anthony Marino’s PAT kick, tied the game at 7. After Polk elected to kick off to start the contest, R-S drove down the field, striking first, with 7:40 to go in the first quarter, on a touchdown carry by Rashaun Whitesides. In all, Schlabach completed 12 of 17 passes for 296 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Carson snagged eight of those passes for 146 yards and a touchdown, while Smith caught three deliveries for 140 yards and one score. Schlabach, who can and does run, rushed for only 25 yards on 12 carries, but brought

Polk’s No. 9 Bryce Martin tries to tackle an R-S Central runner. See more photos at www.tryondailybulletin. com. (photo by Mark Schmerling)

the crowd to its feet with an eyepopping kickoff return early in the second half. One of Polk’s turnovers helped R-S take the lead for good in the second quarter. Shortly after Schlabach carried the ball to the Hilltoppers’ 49 for a first down, R-S recovered a fumble, and took over on its 46. Rashaun Whitesides then charged down to Polk’s 25 to set up runs by Atchley for a first down and then a touchdown, giving R-S a 14-7 lead, with 4:45 left in the first half. Shortly afterward R-S picked up another fumble at Polk’s 32, with Desmond Whitesides carrying the ball in from the two with 3:07 remaining. Polk had time to operate, but after Desmond Whitesides picked off one of

Schlabach’s passes, R-S held the ball until the half ended. Early in the third quarter, after R-S added another score, Schlabach connected with Smith, who ran the rest of the way for a touchdown. A missed PAT attempt left the score, 28-13 and the offensive battle continued. After the game, Ollis found lots of positives in his players, one of those being their refusal to give in. Right after R-S’ fourth TD, Schlabach showed that determination, taking the Hilltoppers’ kickoff all the way back to the R-S 8 yard line. Another example was that Polk’s defense stopped many R-S running plays for little or no gain, even when the Wolverines trailed in the game.

“We just never could stop them. We couldn’t get off the field on defense. We’ve got to get better on defense. (But) we battled. We’re still playing hard,” Ollis said. Ollis knows that performance is a product of input, challenges and intangibles. “I think we’re going to be up to the challenge,” he said after the game. “I know that if these young men hang in there, the worm is going to turn. I really believe in this football team will be good when all is said and done. As the head football coach, I believe in them.” The Wolverines travel to rival Landrum this Friday, Sept. 13 to again try for that first season win. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Tryon Painters and Sculptors to offer September classes The month of September will be a busy one at the Tryon Painters and Sculptors’ gallery in Tryon. Several class offerings are scheduled to begin within the month and the range of media and instructors promises to have interest for a variety of students. Starting up again are the figure drawing open studios held on Thursday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. or Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon. Each of these studios has a class monitor and a nude model. No instruction is given during the class, but students are encouraged to bring their favorite medias. Poses will range from a few minutes to a half hour. Grace Lertora, president of Tryon Painters and Sculptors, will teach a Wednesday morning painting class for all levels. All media will be covered including watercolor, acrylic and oil.

The first sessions will feature a still life set up as reference for the painting. This class will run from 9 a.m. to noon and will begin on Sept. 11. Julia Calhoun Williams will offer a first time pastel drawing class on Wednesday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. that will begin on Sept. 25. Making connections to give, get support Tuxedo Treasures Good Neighbor Kiesa Kay

One recent sunny September evening, four friends gathered in their Connections group. What sometimes sets them apart has brought them together: a diagnosis – such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress or bipolar disorder – along with the willingness to support other people and themselves on life’s journey. “Over the long run, we build alliances here,” said Benji, who co-facilitates the group. “Once I get here, I can feel the bond, the positive quality that I attribute to a connectedness built through our perseverance. Each person’s presence counts. You don’t have to have something grandiose to say. It’s about being together.” The Connections group meets from 7-8 p.m. every Thursday at Tryon Presbyterian Church, and anyone in the community is welcome to attend. Individuals interested in joining may show up at the next meeting or call Charlotte, group co-facilitator, for more information at 864-457-7278. “Being here every week is important,” said Elizabeth, who attends regularly. “You never know when you’ll have a good week, or when you’ll have a bad week and really need the group. Being able to be yourself here helps. You may hold onto something all week because other people don’t understand. Here, even if everyone doesn’t understand, I’m allowed to say my piece, and that’s important.” The group welcomes new members from the community. Two of the current members have been trained as group facilitators

through NAMI. “People need support,” Elizabeth said. “It’s part of our mission, to serve that need.” The group has a few rules, such as starting and stopping on time, and avoiding cross talk or advice-giving. Most of all, everyone adheres to a strict policy of confidentiality. “What’s said here, stays here,” Benji said. The group keeps to its one-hour time and to a consistent structure. First, they have a check-in of two minutes each, so that everyone has a chance to speak. Afterwards, they review their principles of support. These principles include: “We find strength in sharing experiences,” and “We will never give up hope.” Then, they share and talk for a while, and after a moment of silence, the hour ends with each person saying one good thing that’s happened in the course of the past week.

“People are free to speak as much or as little as they want,” Elizabeth said. They share strengths and strategies. Benji and Charlotte both said music made a difference for them. Benji participates in choir, and Charlotte plays an instrument and sings in a band. “I also spend a lot of time outdoors, going on wildflower walks,” Charlotte said. Elizabeth added, “I crochet when I can do it. It keeps me from ruminating.” Sometimes, a crisis situation can exacerbate a mental health condition, Elizabeth said. Being in a consistent support group provides mental health maintenance. Charlotte added that the group also has fun together on picnics and walks. “It’s a tribute to us all, to be here together,” Benji said. “Since we are here week in and week out, doing the work of being here, we steadily get to know each other.”
